Simulation Of Magnesium Defects Under Concurrent Stress And Vibration Using Interatomic Potentials, Chimereze Emenike, Christopher Barrett
Simulation Of Magnesium Defects Under Concurrent Stress And Vibration Using Interatomic Potentials, Chimereze Emenike, Christopher Barrett
Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
Magnesium is the lightest structural metal, and its strength-to-weight and stiffness-to-weight ratios give it great potential for weight reduction in various industries. However, it is brittle at room temperature due to its crystal structure, making it unfit for the manufacture of parts requiring stamping or rolling. Our research is concerned with the movement of defects critical to the ductility of magnesium under different conditions. In this project, we investigated the movement of a Pyramidal Il edge dislocation in magnesium structures undergoing shear and oscillatory stress. We hypothesize that oscillating stress could help the dislocation move more quickly. This would suggest …

Continuous Data Assimilation For Geophysical Flow, Amanda E. Diegel, Sehani Edirisinghe, Mary Chase Pittman
Research Experiences for Undergraduates in Computational Methods with Applications in Materials Science
We consider continuous data assimilation, a numerical method which incorporates known data, to model geophysical flow. Geophysical flow simulations are important to weather and ocean modeling, the study of climate change, modeling pollutant transport in the ocean, and many other areas. We study the barotropic vorticity model, which tracks fluid vorticity and the streamfunction, using the finite element method with continuous data assimilation. Utilizing MATLAB with the finite element C++/MATLAB toolbox FELICITY, we seek to answer whether incorporating known vorticity data, but not streamfunction data, into the numerical simulation in real time with lead to long-term accurate approximate solutions even …

Numerical modelling is important in many fluid dynamics applications, yet robust benchmarking is required to quantify uncertainty. This study presents results from a blind comparative benchmark of isothermal sloshing in a circular tank. Sloshing is relevant to many engineering applications, including offshore shipping, where vessel motions can excite internal fluid motion, generating impact loads and affecting stability. A series of horizontal and vertical excitation cases of increasing complexity are considered. Participant solutions for free surface displacements are compared against physical model data that was withheld until after submission. Across all cases, the numerical models generally capture the dominant frequency. Typical …
A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu
A Visitation Grid For Complete Coverage Foraging In Robot Swarms, Arturo Gonzalez, Yifeng Gao, Li Zhang, Qi Lu
Computer Science Faculty Publications
The complete collection of sparse resources in large, unknown environments remains a challenging problem for autonomous robot swarms. Previous studies have shown that a substantial portion of total mission time is consumed during the final stage of collection, where only a small fraction of randomly scattered resources remain. Consequently, many existing swarm foraging algorithms (search and collection) focus on collecting most resources within a limited time window, rather than improving end-stage efficiency for collecting all resources. We propose a grid-based stochastic foraging strategy that explicitly reduces redundant visits and accelerates late-stage collection. The unknown search area is partitioned into a …

Governance, Culture, And Law: The Expanding Scope Of Environmental Science And Sustainable Development Research, Ahyaudin Sodri, Herdis Herdiansyah
Journal of Environmental Science and Sustainable Development
Environmental science emerged as a discipline based on physical measurements, such as soil pollutant levels (Ailijiang et al., 2022), ecological restoration (Yue et al., 2026), city surface temperature (Shafizadeh-Moghadam et al., 2025), and microbial density in air samples (Hayleeyesus & Manaye, 2014). However, its objects of study increasingly extend beyond the confines of the laboratory. Questions that were once sufficiently answered with measurement data now require answers through draft laws, Constitutional Court decisions, financial reports of mining companies, and even traditional ritual discourses governing community access to forests. In other words, environmental …
Model-Free Sliding Mode Control On Dc Motor Modules Using Coulomb Friction Simulation, Donovan Barros
Model-Free Sliding Mode Control On Dc Motor Modules Using Coulomb Friction Simulation, Donovan Barros
Theses
Classical control methods such as PID control are effective for simple systems where the system model is well-known and tuning can be completed without significant time and financial investment. However, systems in the modern world have become more intricate and complicated to model, which also results in more extensive tuning being required to develop effective controllers. Sliding Mode Control was developed as a more robust way to handle nonlinear systems while ensuring global asymptotic stability using Lyapunov’s stability theorem. Traditional Sliding Mode Control does still require a well-known system model, necessitating the development of a new control method. Model-Free Sliding …

Effects Of Scion And Rootstock On Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis And Spore Communities In Vitis Vinifera, Nicholas Vergara, Stephen Bentivenga
Effects Of Scion And Rootstock On Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Symbiosis And Spore Communities In Vitis Vinifera, Nicholas Vergara, Stephen Bentivenga
STEM Student Research Symposium Posters
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are obligate root symbionts that extend host nutrient uptake in exchange for photosynthate. Nearly all commercial wine grapes (Vitis vinifera) are grafted onto American rootstocks selected for phylloxera resistance, drought tolerance, and vigor, meaning the root system interfacing with soil fungi is genetically distinct from the fruiting scion. Whether root system origin shapes AMF association remains poorly resolved, particularly in sandy, low-fertility soils. We compared AMF colonization and spore communities across four rootstock–scion combinations (Cabernet Franc and Merlot scions, own-rooted and riparian rootstock) at William Heritage® Winery in Mullica Hill, NJ. Fine roots were cleared, stained, …

Comparison Of Arbuscular Mycorrhizal Fungal Colonization And Spore Communities Between Clover-Dominated Cover Crop And Restored Native Grass Systems, Nicholas Vergara, Stephen Bentivenga
STEM Student Research Symposium Posters
Arbuscular mycorrhizal fungi (AMF) are obligate root symbionts that extend host nutrient uptake in exchange for photosynthate. Restored native grasslands and cover-cropped fields represent contrasting management strategies applied to former conventional farmland, differing in both tillage frequency and plant diversity, yet how these strategies shape AMF association in sandy, low-fertility soils remains largely understudied. We compared AMF colonization and spore communities between two adjacent sites converted approximately three years prior at the Bishop Farmstead, Southampton Township, NJ: a restored grassland dominated by Panicum virgatum and an agricultural field under white and red clover cover (Trifolium repens, T. pratense). Fine roots …

Oncogenic E-Cadherin-Dependent Metastasis And Potential Therapeutic Interventions, Madison K. Duenas, Anjela Anand, Paige Cano, Ralph Boccia, Mary Alpaugh
STEM Student Research Symposium Posters
Oncogenic E-cadherin-dependent metastasis is a paradoxical mechanism of cancer progression whereby E-cadherin, a cell-to-cell adhesion protein that normally suppresses tumor invasion, instead promotes the formation of cohesive cell tumor clusters that collectively invade surrounding tissues and metastasize. This phenomenon has been extensively studied using inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) models, including the MARY-X xenograft and SUM149 cell line, while comparisons with other breast cancer models such as MDA-MB-231 continue to provide insight into E-cadherin-independent metastatic mechanisms. This project reviews recent literature investigating the molecular mechanisms behind it and evaluates emerging therapeutic strategies targeting E-cadherin-associated cellular pathways. Laboratory techniques, including spheroid generation …

Field Oriented Control Of Afpmsm For Electrical Vehicle Using Adaptive Neuro-Fuzzy Inference System (Anfis), Nagham Farhan, Abdulrahim Humod, Fadhil Hasan
Engineering and Technology Journal
Axial Flux Permanent Magnet Synchronous Motor (AFPMSM) are very attractive candidates for driving applications due to their high efficiency, high torque-to-weight ratio, high power density, small magnetic thickness, and simplicity of construction. On the other hand, AFPMSM produces undesirable torque ripple in the developed electromagnetic torque, affecting their output performance. An intelligent control method is proposed in this paper to reduce torque ripple and improve the dynamic performance of AFPMSM. The vector control, employing the Field Oriented Control (FOC) technique, was used to improve the dynamic performance of the AFPMSM. The speed and torque controllers are achieved using the decoupling …

Wetland landscape characterization is an important component of determining the degree to which wetlands improve environmental conditions. The present study aims to create a model used to automated extraction of the land cover of the western part of the Al-Hammar Marsh south of Iraq, and then monitor the change in land cover overtime. A model builder in ArcGIS created based on a series of spectral-based indices included the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), the Normalized Difference Moisture Index (NDMI), and the Normalized Difference Water Index (NDWI), the OLI satellite images from 2013 to 2020, ENVI 5.3 and ArcGIS 10.4 were …

The issue of time series records containing low inflow than normal, such critical period results in shortage in reservoir storage, thereby reduction in the reservoir's releases that satisfy the demands. When the expected available water is less than the demand, releases may be curtailed, and the reservoir is under stress. This study presents an application of HEC – ResSim model to simulate the operation of Mosul, Dokan Reservoirs, and Samarra Barrage during the dry period 19992000 (modeling of historical data). Simulated results and recorded data were compared in order to, first improve the applicability of the software to simulate reservoir …
