Data included 1,162 student scores on the 2014 AP Calculus AB exam, student gender, student grade level, and eligibility for free or reduced price lunch (FRL) status. Teachers completed the Standards' Beliefs Instrument (SBI) (Zollman & Mason, 1992) to determine alignment of their beliefs with the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards. Interviews were conducted with five NBC mathematics teachers to understand how they incorporate best mathematics teaching practices in their daily instruction. A t-test analysis revealed that students …

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen Jan 2015

The Importance Of Immobilization And Localization Of Gynecological Applicators In High Dose Rate Brachytherapy Treatments, Mikko Hyvärinen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Intracavitary high dose rate (HDR) brachytherapy is a form of radiation therapy generally in which a post-surgical tissue margin is treated. The dose gradient of HDR brachytherapy is very steep, and thus small displacements of the applicator, even as small as 1 mm, could potentially cause significant variations of dose which could result in undesired side effects such as overdose of a critical organ. In this retrospective dosimetric study, the variation of dose due to various small range motions of gynecological applicators is investigated. The results show that the implementation of additional immobilization and localization devices along with other safety …

The Emotional Experience Of Language In English Spanish Bilinguals, Uribe Idaly Velez Jan 2015

The Emotional Experience Of Language In English Spanish Bilinguals, Uribe Idaly Velez

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Bilinguals commonly report experiencing emotions differently depending on which language are they speaking. Emotionally loaded words were expected to be appraised differently in first versus second language in a sample of Spanish-English bilinguals (n=117). English (L2) ratings were subtracted from Spanish (L1) ratings; the resulted scores were used as dependent variable in the analyses. Three categories of words (positive, negative and taboo) were appraised in both languages (English and Spanish)and two sensory modalities (Visual and auditory). The differences in valence scores in Spanish (L1) and English (L2) were expected to be significantly higher when presented aurally than when presented visually. …

A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams Jan 2015

A Critical Analysis Of First Generation Black Male College Students’ Perceptions Of Their Preparation For College Level Mathematics, Kyla L. Williams

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

President Obama’s 2014 “My Brother’s Keeper” initiative responds to the continuing educational disparities that the No Child Left Behind Act was intended to have addressed. The preoccupation with standardized testing and accountability over the past decade has revealed evidence of disparities in achievement between Black male students and their White counterparts. Critical Race Theorists have framed these persistent disparities as evidence of the opportunity gap and have advocated culturally responsive pedagogy that would facilitate students’ academic success.

A Dosimetric Study Of A Heterogeneous Phantom For Lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Comparing Monte Carlo And Pencil Beam Calculations To Dose Distributions Measured With A 2-D Diode Array, Casey Michael Curley Jan 2015

A Dosimetric Study Of A Heterogeneous Phantom For Lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy Comparing Monte Carlo And Pencil Beam Calculations To Dose Distributions Measured With A 2-D Diode Array, Casey Michael Curley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

Monte Carlo (MC) and Pencil Beam (PB) calculations are compared to their measured planar dose distributions using a 2-D diode array for lung Stereotactic Body Radiation Therapy (SBRT). The planar dose distributions were studied for two different phantom types: an in-house heterogeneous phantom and a homogeneous phantom. The motivation is to mimic the human anatomy during a lung SBRT treatment and incorporate heterogeneities into the pre-treatment Quality Assurance process, where measured and calculated planar dose distributions are compared before the radiation treatment. Individual and combined field dosimetry has been performed for both fixed gantry angle (anterior to posterior) and planned …

Cahydrodynamic Analysis Of Flapping Foils For The Propulsion Of Near Surface Under Water Vehicles Using The Panel Method, Julia Bustos Jan 2015

Cahydrodynamic Analysis Of Flapping Foils For The Propulsion Of Near Surface Under Water Vehicles Using The Panel Method, Julia Bustos

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This thesis presents two-dimensional hydrodynamic analysis of flapping foils for the propulsion of underwater vehicles using a source-vortex panel. Using a simulation program developed in MatLab, the hydrodynamic forces (such as the lift and the drag) as well as the propulsion thrust and efficiency are computed with this method. The assumptions made in the analysis are that the flow around a hydrofoil is two-dimensional, incompressible and inviscid. The analysis is first considered for the case of a deeply submerged hydrofoil followed by the case where it is located in shallow water depth or near the free surface. In the second …

Combined Spatial Diversity And Time Equalization For Broadband Multiple Channel Underwater Acoustic Communications, Kaskarovska Violeta Skoro Jan 2015

Combined Spatial Diversity And Time Equalization For Broadband Multiple Channel Underwater Acoustic Communications, Kaskarovska Violeta Skoro

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

High data rate acoustic communications become feasible with the use of communication systems that operate at high frequency. The high frequency acoustic transmission in shallow water endures severe distortion as a result of the extensive intersymbol interference and Doppler shift, caused by the time variable multipath nature of the channel. In this research a Single Input Multiple Output (SIMO) acoustic communication system is developed to improve the reliability of the high data rate communications at short range in the shallow water acoustic channel. The proposed SIMO communication system operates at very high frequency and combines spatial diversity and decision feedback …

Electronic Theses and Dissertations 2010 - 2019

This is a comprehensive study of how Big Data and analytics will be the future of music marketing. There has been a recent trend of being able to turn metrics into quantifiable, real-word predictions. With an increase in online music consumption along with the use of social media there is now a clearer view than ever before about how this will happen. Instead of solely relying on big record companies for an artist to make it to the big time, there is now a plethora of data and analytics available not just to a small number of big companies, but …

Maximum Entropy Modeling Of Indiana Bat (Myotis Sodalis) Maternity Roost Habitat, Joseph Robert Lemen Jan 2015

Maximum Entropy Modeling Of Indiana Bat (Myotis Sodalis) Maternity Roost Habitat, Joseph Robert Lemen

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Since 1967, the Indiana bat (Myotis sodalis) has been on the U.S. Endangered Species list due to disruption of hibernating bats in caves, summer habitat degradation, and more recently, the onset of White-nose Syndrome. The purpose of this study is to evaluate landscape variables associated with Indiana bat maternity roost trees in an attempt to better understand what factors play a role in their distribution in north central Missouri. I tracked reproductive female Indiana bats to 20 different primary and secondary roost trees; these are roosts that had multiple bats visit them on multiple occasions. GPS location data for these …

Thermal Damping And Retardation In Karst Conduits, A. J. Luhmann, Matthew D. Covington, J. M. Myre, Matija Perne, S. W. Jones, E. C. Alexander Jr., M. O. Saar

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Water temperature is a non-conservative tracer in the environment. Variations in recharge temperature are damped and retarded as water moves through an aquifer due to heat exchange between water and rock. However, within karst aquifers, seasonal and short-term fluctuations in recharge temperature are often transmitted over long distances before they are fully damped. Using analytical solutions and numerical simulations, we develop relationships that describe the effect of flow path properties, flow-through time, recharge characteristics, and water and rock physical properties on the damping and retardation of thermal peaks/troughs in karst conduits. Using these relationships, one can estimate the thermal retardation …

Consider A Cylindrical Cave: A Physicist's View Of Cave And Karst Science, Matthew D. Covington, Matija Perne

Geosciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

We review the current understanding of the physics of caves and karst. Our review focuses on research that has used simple physically based models to improve understanding of processes that occur in karst. The topics we cover include cave atmosphere dynamics, transport within karst conduits, and models of speleogenesis and related processes. We highlight recent advances in these subjects and attempt to identify promising areas for future work. In our judgment, many of the most intriguing open questions relate to the interactions between these three groups of processes.

Smooth Positive Solutions To An Elliptic Model With C2 Functions, Joon Hyuk Kang

Faculty Publications

Two species of animals are competing or cooperating in the same environment. Under what conditions do they coexist peacefully? Or under what conditions does either one of the two species become extinct, that is, is either one of the two species excluded by the other? We investigate this phenomena in mathematical point of view.

In this paper we concentrate on coexistence solutions of the competition or cooperation model

This system is the general model for the steady state of a competitive or cooperative interacting system depending on growth conditions for and . The techniques used in this paper are elliptic …

Characterization Of The Ligo Detectors During Their Sixth Science Run, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo Collaboration Jan 2015

Characterization Of The Ligo Detectors During Their Sixth Science Run, Tiffany Summerscales, Ligo Collaboration

Faculty Publications

In 2009–2010, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) operated together with international partners Virgo and GEO600 as a network to search for gravitational waves (GWs) of astrophysical origin. The sensitivity of these detectors was limited by a combination of noise sources inherent to the instrumental design and its environment, often localized in time or frequency, that couple into the GW readout. Here we review the performance of the LIGO instruments during this epoch, the work done to characterize the detectors and their data, and the effect that transient and continuous noise artefacts have on the sensitivity of LIGO to a …
