Spectroscopic Evidence Of Nanodomains In Thf/Rtil Mixtures: Spectroelectrochemical And Voltammetric Study Of Nickel Porphyrins, Abderrahman Atifi, Michael D. Ryan
Chemistry Faculty Research and Publications
The presence and effect of RTIL nanodomains in molecular solvent/RTIL mixture were investigated by studying the spectroelectrochemistry and voltammetry of nickel octaethylporphyrin (Ni(OEP)) and nickel octaethylporphinone (Ni(OEPone)). Two oxidation and 2–3 reduction redox couples were observed, and the UV–visible spectra of all stable products in THF and RTIL mixtures were obtained. The E° values for the reduction couples that were studied were linearly correlated with the Gutmann acceptor number, as well as the difference in the E° values between the first two waves (ΔE12° = |E1° – E2°|). The Δ …

Background: The evolution and development of sexual dimorphism illuminates a central question in biology: How do similar genomes produce different phenotypes? In an XX/XO system especially the state of a sexually dimorphic trait is determined by differences in gene expression, as there are no additional genetic loci in either sex. Here, we examine the XX/XO ostracod crustacean species Euphilomedes carcharodonta. This species exhibits radical sexual dimorphism of their lateral eyes, females have only a tiny simple lateral eye while males have elaborate ommatidial eyes. Results: We find that males express three of nine eye-development gene homologs at significantly higher levels …

In this paper, we drew on experience from current Earth Observation (EO) research in Africa and Asia based on the 250m MODIS vegetation index time series covering large spatial extents. In the first example in the southern Africa, we derived a key set of phenometrics (overall greenness, peak and timing of annual greenness) and analyzed trends in these parameters. In the second example in the eastern Africa, we mapped human-induced vegetation productivity decline. The climate-induced changes in vegetation were largely disentangled from the anthropogenic-driven changes by using rainfall data from radar observations. In the last example, we revealed vegetation dynamic …

The Cosmic Assembly Near-infrared Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey and Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble multi-cycle treasury programs with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) have provided new opportunities to probe the rate of core-collapse supernovae (CCSNe) at high redshift, now extending to z ≈ 2.5. Here we use a sample of approximately 44 CCSNe to determine volumetric rates, RCC, in six redshift bins in the range 0.1< z < 2.5. Together with rates from our previous HST program, and rates from the literature, we trace a more complete history of RCC (z) , with RCC = 0.72 ± 0.06 yr-1 Mpc-3 10-4 h3 70 at z < 0.08, and increasing to 3.7-1.6 +3.1 yr-1 Mpc-3 10-4 h3 70 to Z ≈ 2.0. The statistical precision in each bin is several factors better than than the systematic error, with significant contributions from host extinction, and average peak absolute magnitudes of the assumed luminosity functions for CCSN types. Assuming negligible time delays from stellar formation to explosion, we find these composite CCSN rates to be in excellent agreement with cosmic star formation rate density (SFRs) derived largely from dust-corrected rest-frame UV emission, with a scaling factor of k = 0.0091 ± 0.0017 M⊙ -1, and inconsistent (to >95% confidence) with SFRs from IR luminous galaxies, or with SFR models that include simple evolution in the initial mass function over time. This scaling factor is expected if the fraction of …

Manipulating Electromagnetic Local Density Of States By Graphene Plasmonics, Yongpin P. Chen, Wei E.I. Sha, Li (Lijun) Jun Jiang, Jun Hu
Electrical and Computer Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Electromagnetic local density of states (ELDOS) counts the number of electromagnetic modes at a spatial point where a particle (atom, molecule, and quantum dot) spontaneously emits electromagnetic waves. ELDOS can be interpreted as a density of vacuum fluctuations of electromagnetic fields. Moreover, ELDOS is essential to control spontaneous decay rate (SDR) of particles; and thus plays a critical role in modern optical and quantum devices. Having a great degree of freedom to tune permittivity, graphene is an emerging building block to manipulate the ELDOS. In this work, we study SDR of a particle near a metallic split-ring resonator, which is …

Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
Students’ knowledge about a profession influences their future decisions about careers. Research indicates that students tend to hold stereotypical views of engineers, which would hinder engineering as a career choice. The purpose of this study was to measure how participating in a week long engineering summer camp affected middle school students’ (N519) attitudes towards engineering and their conceptions of engineering and technology. Results indicate that participation in the programs had a positive impact on the students’ understandings of what technology is and the work engineers do. Although the results indicate a positive impact on participants, it is not clear which …

Teacher Beliefs About Motivating And Teaching Students To Carry Out Engineering Design Challenges: Some Initial Data, James P. Van Haneghan, Susan A. Pruet, Rhonda Neal-Waltman, Jessica M. Harlan
Journal of Pre-College Engineering Education Research (J-PEER)
The present study examines middle school teachers’ beliefs about seven learning outcomes related to a project that involves developing and examining the effects of a set of engineering design modules constructed for use by middle school math and science teachers. Overall, the teachers involved in the intervention appear to believe they have the instructional skills, professional development, and resources to carry out the modules. Teachers from all of the schools (both intervention and comparison schools) for the most part valued the outcomes as important. Results of the study indicate that, although teachers believe they value and can obtain most of …

Marbles: The Application Of Input-Output Concepts To Safety Management Systems, Tim Brady, Alan Stolzer, Anthony Brickhouse, Antonio Cortés, Dan Mccune, Jayathi Raghavan, David Freiwald
Journal of Aviation Technology and Engineering
The goal of this research was to apply the economic concept titled Input-Output Analysis to an aviation safety concept titled Safety Management Systems (SMS). Input-Output (IO) is based upon the interrelationships of various components of an economic system and what happens to the system when one or more of those components changes. Since SMS is, by definition, a system with definable components, the research sought to determine if the interrelationships between those components could be determined and quantified. The term ‘‘marbles’’ was used to describe the activities that led to the IO-SMS matrix. Marbles was used as a metaphor for …

"How To Be Nice And Get What You Want": Structural Referents Of "Self" And "Other" In Experiential Education As (Un)Democratic Practice, Franklin Vernon
Democracy & Education
This critical ethnography explores a social justice program utilizing nontraditional, democratic, "experiential" education practices. The author posits a historical legacy of pedagogy of self obscures its emancipatory, democratic potential while simultaneously expanding on contemporary discourses of self and other as aspects of the educational setting. Students' labors to reference and enact oppressive, capitalistic idealizations of either self or other problematizes pragmatic theories of self, and the author draws upon critical pragmatism to reposition self and other as aspects of pedagogy and curriculum in democratic education.

Democracy & Education
In this article, we explain how mindfulness can enhance a democratic way of being, connecting practices of awareness, reflection, dialog, and action to democratic citizenship and social arrangements. We begin by sharing our understanding of democracy as a philosophy and a political system. We then provide a background for the concept of mindfulness as it is used by those in the field of education and health care and as we connect it to democracy and democratic education. We introduce a mindfulness pedagogy and use this pedagogy to develop our concept of mindfully democratic schools. We use the work of John …

Recent advancements in nonlinear dynamical systems theory have led to the development of a methodology, called geodesic eddy detection, for the objective (i.e., frame-independent) framing and tracking of coherent Lagrangian eddies in two-dimensional unsteady flows. Such eddies have material boundaries that do not stretch or fold over long periods of time, thereby providing an explicit mechanism of transport of fluid and distinguished properties, such as temperature and salinity. Eddies identified from Eulerian criteria (e.g., as regions enclosed by streamlines where rotation dominates over strain instantaneously) do not possess this property as such criteria either depend on the choice of reference …

So You Think You Can Model? A Guide To Building And Evaluating Archaeological Simulation Models Of Dispersals, Iza Romanowska
Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints
With the current surge of simulation studies in archaeology there is a growing concern for the lack of engagement and feedback between modellers and domain specialists. To facilitate this dialogue I present a compact guide to the simulation modelling process applied to a common research topic and the focus of this special issue of Human Biology—human dispersals. The process of developing a simulation is divided into nine steps grouped in three phases. The conceptual phase consists of identifying research questions (step 1) and finding the most suitable method (step 2), designing the general framework and the resolution of the …

An Adaptive Markov Strategy For Effective Network Intrusion Detection, Jianye Hao, Yinxing Xue, Mahinthan Chandramohan, Yang Liu, Jun Sun
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Network monitoring is an important way to ensure the security of hosts from being attacked by malicious attackers. One challenging problem for network operators is how to distribute the limited monitoring resources (e.g., intrusion detectors) among the network to detect attacks effectively, especially when the attacking strategies can be changing dynamically and unpredictable. To this end, we adopt Markov game to model the interactions between the network operator and the attacker and propose an adaptive Markov strategy (AMS) to determine how the detectors should be placed on the network against possible attacks to minimize the network’s accumulated cost over time. …
