An Investigation Of Six Poorly Described Close Visual Double Stars Using Speckle Interferometry, Daniel B. Wallace Jan 2015

An Investigation Of Six Poorly Described Close Visual Double Stars Using Speckle Interferometry, Daniel B. Wallace

Theses and Dissertations

Continued observation of double stars is necessary for confirmation of binarity and to provide updates to astrometric data used to compute accurate binary orbital parameters, thereby more accurately informing stellar mass estimations – the critical parameter from which stellar models are derived. In October of 2013, six double stars from the Washington Double Star (WDS) catalog exhibiting close separations, as well as significant deviations from previously published orbits, were observed and imaged using the speckle interferometric technique on the 2.1-meter telescope at Kitt Peak National Observatory (KPNO) in Arizona. The observations of the six double stars occurred as part of …

Marine Boundary Layer Cloud And Drizzle Properties Over Arm Azores Site, Peng Wu Jan 2015

Marine Boundary Layer Cloud And Drizzle Properties Over Arm Azores Site, Peng Wu

Theses and Dissertations

In this study, a new method has been developed to retrieve the marine boundary layer (MBL) cloud microphysical properties, which provides a complete diurnal variation of MBL cloud properties for 19-month dataset at the Azores. All nighttime monthly means of cloud liquid water path (LWP) exceed their daytime counterparts with an annual mean LWP of 140 g m-2, which is ~30.9 g m-2 larger than the daytime mean. The seasonal and diurnal variations of cloud LWC and optical depth basically follow the variation of LWP. There are, however, no significant day-night differences and diurnal variations in cloud-droplet effective radius (re) …

Preventing Or Mitigating The Irreversible Ro Membrane Fouling Caused By Dissolved Organic Matter And Colloidal Materials During Surface Water Treatment, Raphael Ade Afonja Jan 2015

Preventing Or Mitigating The Irreversible Ro Membrane Fouling Caused By Dissolved Organic Matter And Colloidal Materials During Surface Water Treatment, Raphael Ade Afonja

Theses and Dissertations

Reverse osmosis (RO) is increasingly being used for water treatment because of its small ecological footprint and improved membrane technology. However, a major challenge to the application of this technology in water treatment is the irreversible fouling observed in RO membranes. Fouling, mainly caused by dissolved organic matter (DOM) and colloidal materials (CM) in water, can increase the energy and maintenance costs and decrease the permeation flux and membrane life. Different pretreatments, such as coagulation, flocculation, sedimentation, and membrane-filtration, need to be applied upstream of the RO system to remove potential RO foulants. Membrane remediation by chemical cleaning also needs …

Impact Of Fault Current Limiters And Demand Response On Electric Utility Asset Management Programs, Shayan Behzadirafi Jan 2015

Impact Of Fault Current Limiters And Demand Response On Electric Utility Asset Management Programs, Shayan Behzadirafi

Theses and Dissertations

Over-currents are known to be the dominant cause of power system component failures or deterioration from full functionality. Some of these effects may remain unknown and could later result in catastrophic failures of the entire or large portions of the system. There are plenty of devices/methods available to limit the undesirable consequences of the over-current events. These devices/methods have great impact on system reliability by reducing stress on power system components and increasing their useful lifetime. Due to the importance of the subject, there is tremendous need to analyze and compare these devices/methods in terms of reliability. However, few researches …

Population Dynamics: A Case Study Of The North Dakota Oil Boom, Jessica Leigh Jensen Jan 2015

Population Dynamics: A Case Study Of The North Dakota Oil Boom, Jessica Leigh Jensen

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the recent oil boom and the impacts it has had on North Dakota population dynamics, paying special attention to which demographic factors have had the largest influence on population growth. Research methodology includes the use of standard life tables, as well as cohort component population projections. Life tables include fertility rates, mortality rates, and migration rates. Results will lead to new and better population projections for North Dakota. The usefulness of a population projection is manifold, but perhaps the most obvious use is for planning purposes. It is essential for a community to have an idea about …

Hybrid Enhanced Epidermal Spacesuit Design Approaches, Joseph M. Jessup Jan 2015

Hybrid Enhanced Epidermal Spacesuit Design Approaches, Joseph M. Jessup

Theses and Dissertations

A Space suit that does not rely on gas pressurization is a multi-faceted problem

that requires major stability controls to be incorporated during design and construction. The concept of Hybrid Epidermal Enhancement space suit

integrates evolved human anthropomorphic and physiological adaptations into its functionality, using commercially available bio-medical technologies to address shortcomings of conventional gas pressure suits, and the impracticalities of MCP suits. The prototype HEE Space Suit explored

integumentary homeostasis, thermal control and mobility using advanced bio-medical materials technology and construction concepts. The goal was a space suit that functions as an enhanced, multi-functional bio-mimic of the human epidermal layer …

Clustering And Control Of Streaming Synchrophasor Datasets, Anupam Mukherjee Jan 2015

Clustering And Control Of Streaming Synchrophasor Datasets, Anupam Mukherjee

Theses and Dissertations

With the large scale deployment of phasor measurement units (PMU) in the United States, a resonating topic has been the question of how to extract useful “information” or “knowledge” from voluminous data generated by supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA), PMUs and advanced metering infrastructure (AMI).

With a sampling rate of 30 to as high as 120 samples per second, the PMU provide a fine-grained monitoring of the power grid with time synchronized measurements of voltage, current, frequency and phase angle. Running the sensors continuously can produce nearly 2,592,000 samples of data every day. This large data need to be …

New Employment In Post-1990s Algeria: Are Rapidly Added Jobs Positively Affecting Economic Recovery?, Adrian Troyer Jan 2015

New Employment In Post-1990s Algeria: Are Rapidly Added Jobs Positively Affecting Economic Recovery?, Adrian Troyer

Theses and Dissertations

An apparent labor recovery success story since the turn of the century has been the reduction of Algeria’s post-war high unemployment rate. However, there are reasons to doubt the effectiveness of government programs that induced the adding of large totals of short-term, low-paying jobs, particularly following new labor legislation in December 2004. By nature, this added employment has not been genuine permanent work for the educated that might be associated with labor productivity and economic growth. We use dynamic panel models with Arellano-Bond estimators by the generalized method of moments to suggest that Algeria has not exhibited the expected positive …
