Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo Dec 2015

Facticity And Transcendence Across The Disciplines: Phenomenology And The Promise, Neal Deroo

Faculty Work Comprehensive List

This paper begins from one of the most commonly found questions in phenomenology, “What is Phenomenlogy?”, to argue that phenomenology is a trans-disciplinary approach to engaging with the products of human culture. This approach is characterized by paying particular attention to the distinction between facticity and transcendence within “lived experience” so as to help us better articulate and evaluate the promises that animate every human institution. Such a task necessarily requires inter-disciplinary input and helps us engage in our lives—in our shared cultural life—differently.

Supply Management In Multiproduct Firms With Fixed Proportions Technology, Onur Boyabatli Dec 2015

Supply Management In Multiproduct Firms With Fixed Proportions Technology, Onur Boyabatli

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

This paper studies the supply management of a primary input, where this input gives rise to multiple products in fixed proportions. My objective is twofold. First, I study fixed proportions technology under demand uncertainty in comparison with flexible and the dedicated technologies. I show that fixed proportions technology has a cost- pooling value over dedicated technology, which is larger than the capacity-pooling value of flexible technology over dedicated technology. I identify the critical role that demand correlation plays with the fixed proportions technology: In contrast to the capacitypooling value which decreases in demand correlation, the cost-pooling value increases in demand …

An Integrated Drought Index (Idi) Incorporating Physical And Social Aspects, Rebecca L. Lanier Dec 2015

An Integrated Drought Index (Idi) Incorporating Physical And Social Aspects, Rebecca L. Lanier

Master's Theses

The purpose of this research was to determine significant bio-physical (physical and environmental) and social variables that can be integrated into a drought index to predict areas susceptible to drought. Severe drought events are capable of causing millions of dollars in damage. The 1988 drought caused the United States approximately $40 billion in damage. Drought forecasting, modeling, and detection have, therefore, become imperative to understand the social, economic and environmental impacts of droughts, and also to explore how these impacts play a role in the occurrence of a drought. A number of drought indices widely used in the U.S. rely …

A Platform For Fast Detection Of Let-7 Micro Rna Using Polyaniline Fluorescence And Image Analysis Techniques, Partha P. Sengupta Dec 2015

A Platform For Fast Detection Of Let-7 Micro Rna Using Polyaniline Fluorescence And Image Analysis Techniques, Partha P. Sengupta

Master's Theses

The project describes a new strategy for transducing hybridization events through modulating intrinsic properties of the electroconductive polymer polyaniline (PANI). When DNA based probes electrostatically interact with PANI, its fluorescence properties are increased, a phenomenon that can be enhanced by UV irradiation. Hybridization of target nucleic acids results in dissociation of probes causing PANI fluorescence to return to basal levels. By monitoring restoration of base PANI fluorescence as little as 10-11 M (10 pM) of target oligonucleotides could be detected within 15 minutes of hybridization. Detection of complementary oligos was specific, with introduction of a single mismatch failing to …

High Resolution Melt Analysis Of Samples With Differential Dna Methylation To Identify Tissue Source Of Origin, Stephanie M. Ledgerwood

Master's Theses

In Forensic Science casework, identifying the source of a tissue can assist in crime scene reconstruction. Currently, presumptive testing methods to identify tissue type are utilized in crime scene laboratories, but there is a need for a more reliable confirmatory test for tissue type identification. High Resolution Melt (HRM) analysis is an innovative technology that has the potential to determine tissue types through variations in DNA methylation patterns. Recently, DNA methylation patterns have been found to correspond with specific tissue types in particular regions of DNA. Two markers, B_SPTB_03 and DDX4 have been effective in differentiating sperm from other tissue …

Evaluation Of Alternative Intersections And Interchanges: Volume I—Roundabout Capacity And Rollover Analysis For Heavy Vehicles, Andrew P. Tarko, Mario Romero, Thomas Hall, Shaikh Ahmad Matin, Cristhian Lizarazo

JTRP Technical Reports

There is a recent trend of building roundabouts on high-speed roads, often with the considerable presence of heavy vehicles. With the increased presence of trucks on roundabouts, the issue of overturning has become a concern. Although some geometric, vehicle, and loading factors have been connected to rollover, the safety performance of roundabouts built on high-speed roads is not well understood due to their relative novelty. In addition, other concerns related to geometry, driver behavior, and environmental considerations may exist at roundabouts. This study examined roundabout circulatory superelevation, aggressive driver behavior, roundabout readability, and nighttime conditions in the context of heavy …

Development And Implementation Of Hay Yield Monitoring Technology, Henry Ramsey Dec 2015

Development And Implementation Of Hay Yield Monitoring Technology, Henry Ramsey

All Theses

Three independent technologies related to hay yield monitoring were developed and studied. One technology involved comparison of infrared and ultrasonic sensors on a self-propelled forage harvester. Sensor response related to grass height and was used to estimate yield. Plots that were harvested ranged from 20-40 ft. in length while a bin mounted on the back of the mower collected the crop for weighing and sampling. The infrared sensors data demonstrated accuracies across plots between 5.9% and 9.5% error. The infrared sensors quickly deteriorated and eventually proved to be useless for data acquisition. As for the ultrasonic sensors, they demonstrated similar …

Design Of A Meta-Material With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Zachary Satterfield Dec 2015

Design Of A Meta-Material With Targeted Nonlinear Deformation Response, Zachary Satterfield

All Theses

The M1 Abrams tank contains track pads consist of a high density rubber. This rubber fails prematurely due to heat buildup caused by the hysteretic nature of elastomers. It is therefore desired to replace this elastomer by a meta-material that has equivalent nonlinear deformation characteristics without this primary failure mode. A meta-material is an artificial material in the form of a periodic structure that exhibits behavior that differs from its constitutive material. After a thorough literature review, topology optimization was found as the only method used to design meta-materials. Further investigation determined topology optimization as an infeasible method to design …

Co-Design Of Dynamic Real-Time Scheduling And Cooperative Control For Human-Agent Collaboration Systems Based On Mutual Trust, Xiaotian Wang

All Theses

Mutual trust is a key factor in human-human collaboration. Inspired by this social interaction, we analyze human-agent mutual trust in the collaboration of one human and (semi)autonomous multi-agent systems. In the thesis, we derive time-series human-agent mutual trust models based on results from human factors engineering. To avoid both over- trust and under-trust, we set up dynamic timing models for the multi-agent scheduling problem and develop necessary and sufficient conditions to test the schedulability of the human multi-agent collaborative task. Furthermore, we extend the collaboration between one human and multiple agents into the collaboration between multi-human network and swarm-based agents …

Feasibility Study Of Porous Media Compressed Air Energy Storage In South Carolina, United States Of America, Alexandra-Selene Jarvis Dec 2015

Feasibility Study Of Porous Media Compressed Air Energy Storage In South Carolina, United States Of America, Alexandra-Selene Jarvis

All Theses

Renewable Energy Systems (RES) such as solar and wind, are expected to play a progressively significant role in electricity production as the world begins to move away from an almost total reliance on nonrenewable sources of power. In the US there is increasing investment in RES as the Department of Energy (DOE) expands its wind power network to encompass the use of offshore wind resources in places such as the South Carolina (SC) Atlantic Coastal Plain. Because of their unstable nature, RES cannot be used as reliable grid-scale power sources unless power is somehow stored during excess production and recovered …

Control Of Thermoforming Process Parameters To Manufacture Surfaces With Pin-Based Tooling, Vijay Sarthy Mysore Sreedhara Dec 2015

Control Of Thermoforming Process Parameters To Manufacture Surfaces With Pin-Based Tooling, Vijay Sarthy Mysore Sreedhara

All Theses

Many manufacturing processes used to mass produce parts rely on expensive and time consuming tooling. These processes include sheet metal forming, injection molding, casting, and thermoforming. The time invested in design and development of tooling can be justified for high-production volumes. However, for low-volume production and customized products, the tooling investment cannot be amortized. Flexible tooling has been developed to address the needs of smaller production volumes. Reconfigurable pin tooling is an example of flexible tooling that relies on a matrix of adjustable-height pins to produce approximate surfaces. A key challenge in pin-based tooling is achieving accurate high quality surfaces …

Multiplier Operator On Framed Hilbert Spaces, Haodong Li Dec 2015

Multiplier Operator On Framed Hilbert Spaces, Haodong Li

All Theses

Very often the operators that we study appear most naturally in highly non-diagonal representation. The main goal of spectral theory is to solve this problem by exhibiting for many operators a natural orthonormal basis with respect to which the operators have diagonal representations. However, this can be done only for certain classes of operators. The most important such class is probably the class of compact operators. The problem is that it is often hard to tell whether an operator is compact looking at its non-diagonal representation. In this thesis, we will study a class of operators for which we can …

The Factors Determining The Quantity Of Taxies - An Empirical Analysis Of Cities In China, Yunzi Zhu Dec 2015

The Factors Determining The Quantity Of Taxies - An Empirical Analysis Of Cities In China, Yunzi Zhu

All Theses

The inefficient allocation of transport capacity in the taxi industry leads to the imbalance between the demand and supply of taxies. This paper tries to investigate the influencing factors on the quantity of taxies from the perspective of the demand. It is based on the empirical analysis and assumes that the quantity of buses (Bus), average wage per citizens (AW), population density (PD), road density (RD), the availability of subways (SW) and the e-hailing application (EH) co-determine the quantity of taxies. Under the assumption, I collected the data in 287 cities from 2010 to 2013 and put them into the …

Uptake Of Plutonium On A Novel Thin Film For Use In Spectrometry, William Locklair Dec 2015

Uptake Of Plutonium On A Novel Thin Film For Use In Spectrometry, William Locklair

All Theses

Trace elemental and isotopic analysis of actinides via Thermal Ionization Mass Spectrometry (TIMS) is often difficult and time consuming due to intensive sample preparation. Polymer thin films show strong potential for rapid concentration of radionuclides from solution that may prove as suitable substrates for TIMS analyses. In this work, a polymer thin film (~180 nm) was coated onto a silicon substrate and utilized for rapid radioanalytical analysis. The polymer is composed of poly(vinyl benzyl chloride) functionalized with triethyl amine (TEA) to produce an anion-exchange site for concentrating anionic actinide complexes (i.e. PuCl62-, Pu(NO3)62-) from solution. In addition, selectively functionalizing “spots” …

Phasor Measurement Unit Deployment Approach For Maximum Observability Considering Vulnerability Analysis, Jyoti Paudel Dec 2015

There are several applications of PMUs, out of which state estimation is a widely used. To improve the robustness of state estimation, different approaches for placement of PMUs have been studied. This thesis introduces an approach for deployment the PMUs considering its vulnerability. Two different analysis have been considered to solve the problem of locating PMUs …

Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary Phases For Protein Chromatography, Marissa Pierson Dec 2015

Capillary-Channeled Polymer Fibers As Stationary Phases For Protein Chromatography, Marissa Pierson

All Theses

Capillary-channeled polymer (C-CP) fibers have been studied in this laboratory as stationary phases for protein separations in high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). C-CP fibers are uniquely shaped so as to include eight continuous capillary-channels which interdigitate once packed into a column. The packed column resembles a monolithic structure of unobstructed flow through capillary channels which reduces backpressure and increases linear velocity, reducing separation time. Fibers are effectively nonporous with respect to macromolecules, resulting in fast mass transfer and high sample recovery. C-CP fibers made from polypropylene (PP) yield a fairly homogenous hydrophobic surface suitable for reversed phase (RP) chromatography. In a …

Comparative Aquatic Toxicity Of A Commercial Naphthenic Acid And Processes For Mitigating Risks, Ciera Kinley Dec 2015

Comparative Aquatic Toxicity Of A Commercial Naphthenic Acid And Processes For Mitigating Risks, Ciera Kinley

All Theses

Comparative toxicity data can inform predictions of relative risk, and can be used to implement strategies for altering exposures to mitigate risk. Naphthenic acids (NAs) are a complex group of carboxylic acids that naturally occur in petroleum sources and energy-derived process waters (e.g. refinery effluents and oil sands process affected waters). These compounds are relatively persistent in water and can be a source of toxicity to aquatic organisms. In the first experiment of this thesis, responses of sentinel aquatic organisms to 7-d exposures of commercial (Fluka) NAs were measured (in terms of acute toxicity) to discern relative sensitivities. In terms …

Painting With Turbulence, Chuqiao Wang Dec 2015

Painting With Turbulence, Chuqiao Wang

All Theses

Inspired by a study that identified a strong similarity between Vincent van Gogh's and Jackson Pollock's painting techniques, this thesis explores the interplay between science and art, specifically the unpredictable behaviors in turbulent flows and aesthetic concepts in painting. It utilizes data from a GPU-based air flow simulation, and presents a framework for artists to visualize the chaotic property changes in turbulent flows and create paintings with turbulence data. While the creation of individual brushstrokes is procedural and driven by simulation, artists are able to exercise their aesthetic judgments at various stages during a painting creation. A short animation demonstrates …

Analysis And Synthesis Of Effective Human-Robot Interaction At Varying Levels In Control Hierarchy, David Spencer Dec 2015

Analysis And Synthesis Of Effective Human-Robot Interaction At Varying Levels In Control Hierarchy, David Spencer

All Theses

Robot controller design is usually hierarchical with both high-level task and motion planning and low-level control law design. In the presented works, we investigate methods for low-level and high-level control designs to guarantee joint performance of human-robot interaction (HRI). In the first work, a low-level method using the switched linear quadratic regulator (SLQR), an optimal control policy based on a quadratic cost function, is used. By incorporating measures of robot performance and human workload, it can be determined when to utilize the human operator in a method that improves overall task performance while reducing operator workload. This method is demonstrated …
