Rewetting Of Artificially Desiccated Soils: Effect Of Gravity On Vapor-Phase Diffusion, Taylor Arland Ball
Rewetting Of Artificially Desiccated Soils: Effect Of Gravity On Vapor-Phase Diffusion, Taylor Arland Ball
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Soil desiccation has been suggested as an economically viable alternative for stabilizing water soluble contaminants in deep vadose zones such as at the Hanford Site. This approach would result in a large volume of the vadose zone being dried out in an effort to eliminate the transport mechanism for aqueous phase contaminants. Protecting the top and sides of the desiccated vadose zone from rewetting is a realistic possibility; however, it would be extremely difficult to restrict the upward migration of water from beneath the desiccated zone. One scenario related to the rewetting of the desiccated soil involves the upward migration …

Object Detection And Tracking In Wide Area Surveillance Using Thermal Imagery, Santosh Bhusal
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
The main objective behind this thesis is to examine how existing vision-based detection and tracking algorithms perform in thermal imagery-based video surveillance. While color-based surveillance has been extensively studied, these techniques can not be used during low illumination, at night, or with lighting changes and shadows which limits their applicability. The main contributions in this thesis are (1) the creation of a new color-thermal dataset, (2) a detailed performance comparison of different color-based detection and tracking algorithms on thermal data and (3) the proposal of an adaptive neural network for false detection rejection.

Assessing The Importance Of Nurse Plant Associations To The Growth Of Pre-~Reproductive Yucca Brevifolia, Eric James Chameroy
Assessing The Importance Of Nurse Plant Associations To The Growth Of Pre-~Reproductive Yucca Brevifolia, Eric James Chameroy
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Facilitation and competition among plant species, in addition to abiotic factors, play an important role in determining plant community structure in arid and semi-arid environments. I conducted a study in Dry Lake Valley, Lincoln County, Nevada, USA to investigate the importance of nurse plant associations to pre-reproductive Yucca brevifolia (Joshua tree). Dry Lake Valley lies within a transition desert between the Mojave and Great Basin Deserts with ecotonal plant communities consisting of species representative of both deserts. A vegetation survey described the communities in which this study was conducted as a Y. brevifolia woodland dominated by an understory of Ephedra …
Simulation Of An Air Cooled Single-Effect Solar Absorption Cooling System With Evacuated Tube Collectors, Mohsen Jahandardoost
Simulation Of An Air Cooled Single-Effect Solar Absorption Cooling System With Evacuated Tube Collectors, Mohsen Jahandardoost
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Consistently increasing CO2 emission and ozone depletion from synthetic refrigerants are serious environmental issues challenging the scientific community. Absorption cooling systems give scope of utilizing low grade energy source for generating cooling effect. Solar energy is one of these low grade energy sources and with considering the fact that cooling demand increases with the intensity of solar radiation, solar refrigeration has been considered as a logical solution.
This thesis consists of two different simulation stages, in the first stage, a single effect lithium bromide absorption cooling system with constant cooling capacity is modeled and the effect of ambient and generator …
Quantization Coefficients In Infinite Systems, Eugen Mihailescu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
Quantization Coefficients In Infinite Systems, Eugen Mihailescu, Mrinal Kanti Roychowdhury
School of Mathematical & Statistical Sciences Faculty Publications
We investigate quantization coefficients for probability measures μ on limit sets, which are generated by systems S of infinitely many contractive similarities and by probabilistic vectors. The theory of quantization coefficients for infinite systems has significant differences from the finite case. One of these differences is the lack of finite maximal antichains, and another is the fact that the set of contraction ratios has zero infimum; another difference resides in the specific geometry of S and of its noncompact limit set J . We prove that, for each r ∈ ( 0 , ∞ ) , there exists a unique …

Generalisation, Decision Making, And Embodiment Effects In Mental Rotation: A Neurorobotic Architecture Tested With A Humanoid Robot, K Seepanomwan, D Caligiore, A Cangelosi, G Baldassarre
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Mental rotation, a classic experimental paradigm of cognitive psychology, tests the capacity of humans to mentally rotate a seen object to decide if it matches a target object. In recent years, mental rotation has been investigated with brain imaging techniques to identify the brain areas involved. Mental rotation has also been investigated through the development of neural-network models, used to identify the specific mechanisms that underlie its process, and with neurorobotics models to investigate its embodied nature. Current models, however, have limited capacities to relate to neuro-scientific evidence, to generalise mental rotation to new objects, to suitably represent decision making …

Distributed And Adaptive Shared Control Systems: Methodology For The Replication Of Experiments, Mf Stoelen, Vf De Tejada, Aj Huete, C Balaguer, Fp Bonsignorio
School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics
Much work in robotics aimed at real-world applications falls in the large segment between teleoperated and fully autonomous systems. Such systems are characterized by the close coupling between the human operator and the robot, in principle, allowing the agents to share their particular sensing, adaptation, and decision-making capabilities. Replicable experiments can advance the state of the art of such systems but pose practical and epistemological challenges. For example, the trajectory of the system is governed by the adaptation both in the human and the robot agent. What do we need besides (or instead of) data sets for such a system? …

Side-Chain Boron Difluoride Formazanate Polymers Via Ring-Opening Metathesis Polymerization, Samantha Novoa, Joseph A. Paquette, Stephanie M. Barbon, Ryan R. Maar, Joe Gilroy
Chemistry Publications
The synthesis, characterization, and ring-opening methathesis polymerization (ROMP) of a novel norbornene-based boron difluoride (BF2) formazante monomer are described in detail. The polymerization studies confirmed ROMP to occur in the presence of BF2 formazanates, and also demonstrated the controlled nature of the polymerization. The polymers retained many of the unique characteristics of the monomers in dichloromethane, including absorption and emission at maximum wavelengths of 518 and 645 nm, large Stoke's shifts (uST = 127 nm, 3,800 cm-1), and the ability to act as electron reservoirs to form borataverdazyl-based poly(radical anions) (E°red1 …
The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart
The Job Of Human Capital: What Occupational Data Reveal About Skill Sets, Economic Growth And Regional Competitiveness, Lillian Frances Stewart
ETD Archive
A region's workforce has been described as its greatest asset. Guided by human capital theory and new growth theory, regions have pursued economic development policies to increase the number of college-educated workers and expand the pool of STEM -- science, technology, engineering, and math -- talent. Academic literature and policy interventions have focused on a region's human capital in terms of educational attainment instead of a more fine-grained definition of human capital based on skills and competencies. This dissertation integrates economic and business theory and combines three federal databases to explore regional human capital assets. Findings suggest that policymakers may …

Systemic Risk Management. Cognitive Perspective, Jan K Solarz
Systemic Risk Management. Cognitive Perspective, Jan K Solarz
European Management Studies
This article argues that in order to manage systemic risk, we need more sophisticated and realistic cognitive framework through which to analyse its dynamics and costs. We used macroprudential and microprudential policy to manage explicit systemic risk. Systemic risk is a propagation risk, where shocks spread in time and across sectors. Whilst there are no easy answers, employing this conception of systemic risk management provides an alternative cognitive framework. The narrative approach developed in this article has two dimensions: theoretical tradition in economics (political economics, mathematical economics, institutional economics) and key concepts (rent-seeking, external costs, complexity, nano-finance). To that end, …

Southeast Florida Large Coral Assessment 2015, Brian K. Walker, Katelyn Klug
Marine & Environmental Sciences Faculty Reports
The 2013 nearshore mapping project conducted by Walker and Klug expanded the previous knowledge on the amount, location, and species type of ecologically important large (>2 m) coral colonies in southeast Florida. They discovered over 110 previously undocumented large corals of which 60 were dead and 50 were still alive; 40 of the living corals were larger than 2 m wide and up to 5 m in diameter. Because these corals are the largest and oldest organisms on our reefs, they deserve special attention.
Currently there is unprecedented disease and bleaching in the northern portion of the Florida Reef …

Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov State Of Two-Dimensional Imbalanced Fermi Gases, Daniel E. Sheehy
Faculty Publications
The ground-state phase diagram of attractively interacting Fermi gases in two dimensions with a population imbalance is investigated. We find the regime of stability for the Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) phase, in which pairing occurs at a finite wave vector, and determine the magnitude of the pairing amplitude Δ and FFLO wave vector q in the ordered phase, finding that Δ can be of the order of the two-body binding energy. Our results rely on a careful analysis of the zero-temperature gap equation for the FFLO state, which possesses nonanalyticities as a function of Δ and q, invalidating a Ginzburg-Landau expansion in …

An Alternative For Alternatives: Designing A Teacher Licensure Program For Teacher-Led Schools, Tim J. Quealy
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
The research question addressed in this project was, what are the essential components of an alternative licensure program designed to best prepare teachers for success in a teacher-led school? It documents the creation of a teacher preparation program designed specifically for the unique skills and knowledge sets required for a teacher to be successful in a teacher-led school setting. The research question was influenced by the researcher’s own experience, both as a product of a traditional teacher preparation program and as a teacher in a teacher-led school. To determine the essential components for the teacher preparation program, the capstone first …

Investigating The Consistency Of Stellar Evolution Models With Globular Cluster Observations Via The Red Giant Branch Bump, M. Joyce, B. Chaboyer
Dartmouth Scholarship
Synthetic Red Giant Branch Bump (RGBB) magnitudes are generated with the most recent theoretical stellar evolution models computed with the Dartmouth Stellar Evolution Program (DSEP) code. They are compared to the observational work of Nataf et al., who present RGBB magnitudes for 72 globular clusters. A DSEP model using a chemical composition with enhanced α capture [α/Fe] = +0.4 and an age of 13 Gyr shows agreement with observations over metallicities ranging from [Fe/H] = 0 to [Fe/H] ≈ −1.5, with discrepancy emerging at lower metallicities.
