The two men emerged from the building housing the linguistic offices of the Paris Peace Conference. They hailed a cab, gave the driver the address of a superior hotel, and arranged themselves comfortably for the ride. The older man, a Nebraskan by birth and education, was one of the State Department's lesser officials who was able to speak Russian.

The Impact Of Code-Switching, Language Context, And Language Dominance On Suprasegmental Phonetics: Evidence For The Role Of Predictability, Daniel J. Olson
The Impact Of Code-Switching, Language Context, And Language Dominance On Suprasegmental Phonetics: Evidence For The Role Of Predictability, Daniel J. Olson
School of Languages and Cultures Faculty Publications
Purpose: The present study investigates the suprasegmental reflexes of code-switching, considering both language context (i.e., language mode) and language dominance. Design: To this end, an experimental oral production paradigm was administered to 14 Spanish-English bilinguals, comparing code-switched to non-switched productions and varying both context (monolingual or bilingual) and response language (dominant or nondominant). Data and Analysis: Productions were analyzed for two suprasegmental features: pitch height and stressed vowel duration. Conclusions: Results indicate a significant effect of code-switching on suprasegmental production, with code-switched tokens produced with overall greater pitch movement and duration relative to non-switched tokens. These effects, however, were modulated …
Questions And Inquiry: Some Epistemological Applications, Jason Rourke
Questions And Inquiry: Some Epistemological Applications, Jason Rourke
Dissertations - ALL
Abstract: A recent and innovative research program in epistemology aims to connect the related phenomena of questions and inquiry with epistemological concerns. This dissertation project contributes to that program, taking as its inspiration the contrastive theory of knowledge developed by Jonathan Schaffer in a series of recent papers. The dissertation is comprised of three main parts. I begin by articulating a positive account of the evaluation of knowledge attributions, an account that aims to respect the basic insights of Schaffer's contrastivism while situating them in a modal framework that makes manifest the utility of questions for epistemological theorizing. Then I …
Constitutional Culpability: Questioning The New Exclusionary Rules, Andrew Guthrie Ferguson
Constitutional Culpability: Questioning The New Exclusionary Rules, Andrew Guthrie Ferguson
Florida Law Review
This Article addresses the questions left unanswered by the Supreme Court’s recent exclusionary rule cases. The Hudson-Herring-Davis trilogy presents a new and largely unexamined doctrinal landscape for Fourth Amendment suppression hearings. Courts, litigators, and scholars are only now assessing what has changed on the ground in trial practice. Once an automatic remedy for any constitutional violation, the exclusionary rule now necessitates a separate and more searching analysis. Rights and remedies have been decoupled, such that a clear Fourth Amendment constitutional violation may not lead to the exclusion of evidence. Instead, it now leads to an examination of the conduct of …

Avoid Simple Solutions And Quick Fixes: Lessons Learned From A Comprehensive Districtwide Approach To Improving Student Behavior And School Safety, David Osher, Jeffrey Poirier, Roger Jarjoura, Russell Brown, Kimberly Kendziora
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
We examine the effects of the Cleveland Metropolitan School District’s (CMSD) districtwide efforts to improve school safety, order, and conditions for learning. These approaches include implementing (1) a social and emotional learning program for elementary students (PATHS); (2) a planning model for students exhibiting academic or nonacademic needs (student support teams); and (3) a learner-centered approach to discipline (planning centers). We found that improved conditions for learning as well as student support interventions can foster safer, more productive schools. Suspension and expulsion rates decreased, but racial/ethnic disparities remained. Implementation quality also mediated outcomes. Transforming conditions contributing to exclusionary discipline often …

The Journey To Oz: How Practice, Research, And Law Have Been Used To Combat Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking In Kansas, Karen I. Countryman-Roswurm, Bailey Patton Brackin
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Domestic Minor Sex Trafficking is a form of modern day slavery and is one of the most hidden means of child abuse in the United States. In response to encountering the reality of this abuse and exploitation of our children, multidisciplinary professionals in Kansas were impassioned to develop and implement collaborative practices, community-based research, and law and policy in order to combat trafficking. This paper presents a summary of such efforts that, expanding over a decade, have culminated in a new Kansas Anti-Trafficking Law. A brief summary of the definitions and demographics of trafficking are provided followed by a …

Education Not Incarceration: A Conceptual Model For Reducing Racial And Ethnic Disproportionality In School Discipline, Kent Mcintosh, Erik J. Girvan, Robert H. Horner, Keith Smolkowski
Journal of Applied Research on Children: Informing Policy for Children at Risk
Extension of retribution- and incapacitation-based criminal justice policies and practices to schools has exacerbated racial and ethnic disproportionality in school discipline, a serious and unsolved threat to equity in education and social opportunity. Common approaches implemented to reduce discipline disproportionality have not been shown to be widely effective. A more comprehensive, theory-driven understanding of the factors associated with disproportionate discipline is needed to enhance equity. In this article, we propose a conceptual model of how racial and ethnic bias affects school discipline, with direct implications for practical interventions. The model includes a multidimensional view of bias, informed by research from …

Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Convergent Friends: The Emergence Of Postmodern Quakerism, C. Wess Daniels
Quaker Studies
Postmodernism is ushering in radical change for the Church. Some theologians argue that this change, especially given the discontinuities between modernism and postmodernism, affords new opportunities. Because of these changes there is a decline in many Christian traditions in the West, but there is also a renaissance of ' emerging churches'. The same can be said for Quakers who are experiencing a renaissance of their own. 'Convergent Friends' are a decentralized, international, body of Quakers seeking to renew their tradition through a growing awareness of the need to interact with culture missionally. Their origins and interactions are unique to Convergence …
'Upon The Quakers And The Quietists': Quietism, Power And Authority In Late Seventeenth-Century France, And Its Relation To Quaker History And Theology, Elaine Pryce
Quaker Studies
This article poses a number of questions around its subject matter, from which I develop some explanatory frameworks and further conceptualizations of Quietism. It addresses, primarily, the questions: What is Quietism? What were the issues of power and authority leading to the infamous Quietist Controversy in late seventeenth-century France? And subsequently, what is the nature of Quietism's connection to the Quaker theological tradition?

This thesis examines Case-licensing and its consequences. I claim that there are several cases where a DP is base-generated in SpecCP, and examine how it is Case-licensed. The relevant cases are the Exceptional Case-marking (ECM) construction in Japanese and the mean construction in English (as in What do you mean that I’m a liar?). In particular, I argue that the embedded subject of Japanese ECM is base-generated in SpecCP as a bare topic (i.e., it is an instance of embedded bare topicalization), and is Case-licensed by the matrix verb. I discuss two conflicting sets of data regarding Japanese ECM; …

Machiavelli And Ariosto: Language, Power, And The War Of Words, Rosanne H. Pelletier
Machiavelli And Ariosto: Language, Power, And The War Of Words, Rosanne H. Pelletier
Master's Theses
Machiavelli and Ariosto, the two contemporary giants and ideological opposites of the Italian Renaissance, diverge on the realm of power’s operation. For Machiavelli, power operates within society; here, one wields power over, or else cedes it to, others. By contrast, for Ariosto the locus of power is one’s own mind, where mighty forces swirl and sometimes overtake the individual from within. Whereas in Machiavelli’s view, power is asserted over others, the Ariostan view posits dizzying internal passions over which the individual is often powerless.
Against such a background, I anatomize two sets of linguistic details, and show that they in …

Intentional Teaming: Experiences From The Second National Healthcare Symposium, Paula L. Gajewski Mickelson, Patty Gordon
Journal of Interpretation
Abstract
The second National Symposium on Healthcare Interpreting was developed and hosted by the CATIE Center of St. Catherine University in St. Paul, MN, on July 22-25, 2012. As one of six centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Rehabilitation Services Administration to advance interpreter education, the goal of this symposium is “to improve the understanding of the complex role of interpreters, including the linguistic, cultural, social and ethical challenges inherent in these settings” (CATIE Center, n.d., National Symposium on Healthcare Interpreting section, para. 2). In 2012, 135 Deaf and hearing interpreters, interpreter coordinators and health care providers from …
Language Use At Rid Conferences: A Survey On Behaviors And Perceptions, Cassie Lang
Language Use At Rid Conferences: A Survey On Behaviors And Perceptions, Cassie Lang
Journal of Interpretation
This study examines the language and communication dynamics at national conferences of the Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID). RID conferences typically have thousands of attendees who vary in language background, type of linguistic experiences, and fluency. Data in this study were gathered through an online survey and, among other topics, included questions about behaviors, choices and perceptions of communication in structured and unstructured conference activities and language regulation at conferences. Findings indicate the majority of participants reported the perception that spoken English is used more prevalently than American Sign Language (ASL) at RID conferences. Further, 80% of respondents …
Disfluent Pausing Effects On Listener Judgments Of An Asl-English Interpretation, Stephen Fitzmaurice, Kim A. Purdy
Disfluent Pausing Effects On Listener Judgments Of An Asl-English Interpretation, Stephen Fitzmaurice, Kim A. Purdy
Journal of Interpretation
Although not all spoken language pauses are purposeful or functional, there is general agreement on the function and appropriate length and placement of pauses in English. Failing to conform to this agreement constitutes a pausing disfluency. In an interpreted environment, pauses do not generally detract from the discourse event, nor do they negatively impact the participants’ perception of one another, as long as the interpreter maintains generally acceptable pausing parameters (Fors, 2011; Heldner & Edlund, 2010; Krivokapi, 2007). Listeners of any communication event invariably form opinions about the speaker’s personality and make judgments about their character and background, forming a …

Stress And Burnout In Video Relay Service (Vrs) Interpreting, Kathryn Bower
Journal of Interpretation
Anecdotally, video relay service (VRS) interpreters experience high levels of stress in their work; however, there have been few empirical studies published to date on this topic. This study shows that VRS interpreters experience high levels of stress that can lead to job burnout and high turnover in the VRS industry. This article begins by discussing the VRS industry and the topic of burnout in the workforce. Survey results from individuals within the VRS industry (n = 424) illuminate interpreters’ experiences with stress and burnout in VRS interpreting and provide ideas about solutions for this problem. Lastly, there is …

The Power Gossip And Rumour Have In Shaping Online Identity And Reputation: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michael Nycyk
The Power Gossip And Rumour Have In Shaping Online Identity And Reputation: A Critical Discourse Analysis, Michael Nycyk
The Qualitative Report
What is posted on the Internet about a person’s identity and reputation has the potential power to affect others’ perceptions of them. This study aims to understand and describe how this occurs by undertaking a Critical Discourse Analysis (CDA) of the website Lamebook. It asks in what ways people’s online identity and reputation are shaped by others, or by one’s self, that may influence others’ opinions about them and how is this being done? The results suggest several characteristics of power relations are being exercised by people against others and themselves that harm their identity and reputation. These are achieved …
