Conceptual Transformation And Cognitive Processes In Origami Paper Folding, Thora Tenbrink, Holly A. Taylor Feb 2015

Conceptual Transformation And Cognitive Processes In Origami Paper Folding, Thora Tenbrink, Holly A. Taylor

The Journal of Problem Solving

Research on problem solving typically does not address tasks that involve following detailed and/or illustrated step-by-step instructions. Such tasks are not seen as cognitively challenging problems to be solved. In this paper, we challenge this assumption by analyzing verbal protocols collected during an Origami folding task. Participants verbalised thoughts well beyond reading or reformulating task instructions, or commenting on actions. In particular, they compared the task status to pictures in the instruction, evaluated the progress so far, referred to previous experience, expressed problems and confusions, and—crucially—added complex thoughts and ideas about the current instructional step. The last two categories highlight …

“Entrenched Practices And Other Biases”: Unpacking The Historical, Economic, Professional, And Social Resistance To De-Implementation, Theresa Montini, Ian D. Graham Feb 2015

“Entrenched Practices And Other Biases”: Unpacking The Historical, Economic, Professional, And Social Resistance To De-Implementation, Theresa Montini, Ian D. Graham

Publications and Research

Background In their article on “Evidence-based de-implementation for contradicted, unproven, and aspiring healthcare practices,” Prasad and Ioannidis (IS 9:1, 2014) referred to extra-scientific “entrenched practices and other biases” that hinder evidence-based de-implementation. Discussion Using the case example of the de-implementation of radical mastectomy, we disaggregated “entrenched practices and other biases” and analyzed the historical, economic, professional, and social forces that presented resistance to de-implementation. We found that these extra-scientific factors operated to sustain a commitment to radical mastectomy, even after the evidence slated the procedure for de-implementation, because the factors holding radical mastectomy in place were beyond the control of …

Matural Exams In Kosovo: An Analysis On 2014 Test Results, Genta Agaj Feb 2015

Matural Exams In Kosovo: An Analysis On 2014 Test Results, Genta Agaj

Theses

The focus of this research project was to address some of the criticisms associated with Kosovo’s standardized tests - Matura Exams. The main goal of the project was to statistically analyze students’ test results using three statistical techniques. This problem was tackled by obtaining the 2014 results for the Municipality of Prishtina.

First, Prishtina’s Matura Exam test results were checked for normality. The results from this test suggested that even though Matura Exam is supposed to have normally-distributed results, it failed to do so. Its implications include students and universities not being able to compare individual results with the population …

Causality In Contemporary American Sociology: An Empirical Assessment And Critique, Brandon Vaidyanathan, Michael Strand, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Thomas Buschman, Meghan Davis, Amanda Varela Feb 2015

Causality In Contemporary American Sociology: An Empirical Assessment And Critique, Brandon Vaidyanathan, Michael Strand, Austin Choi-Fitzpatrick, Thomas Buschman, Meghan Davis, Amanda Varela

School of Peace Studies: Faculty Scholarship

Using a unique data set of causal usage drawn from research articles published between 2006–2008 in the American Journal of Sociology and American Sociological Review, this article offers an empirical assessment of causality in American sociology. Testing various aspects of what we consider the conventional wisdom on causality in the discipline, we find that (1) “variablistic” or “covering law” models are not the dominant way of making causal claims, (2) research methods affect but do not determine causal usage, and (3) the use of explicit causal language and the concept of “mechanisms” to make causal claims is limited. Instead, we …

Immigrant Women's Experiences Of Maternity-Care Services In Canada: A Systematic Review Using A Narrative Synthesis, Gina M A. Higginbottom, Myfanwy Morgan, Mirande Alexandre, Yvonne Chiu, Joan Forgeron, Deb Kocay, Rubina Barolia Feb 2015

Immigrant Women's Experiences Of Maternity-Care Services In Canada: A Systematic Review Using A Narrative Synthesis, Gina M A. Higginbottom, Myfanwy Morgan, Mirande Alexandre, Yvonne Chiu, Joan Forgeron, Deb Kocay, Rubina Barolia

School of Nursing & Midwifery

Background: Canada's diverse society and its statutory commitment to multiculturalism means that a synthesis of knowledge related to the healthcare experiences of immigrants is essential to realise the health potential for future Canadians. Although concerns about the maternity experiences of immigrants in Canada are relatively new, recent national guidelines explicitly call for the tailoring of services to user needs. We therefore assessed the experiences of immigrant women accessing maternity-care services in Canada. In particular, we investigated the experiences of immigrant women in Canada in accessing and navigating maternity and related healthcare services from conception to 6 months postpartum in Canada. …

Language Development In Kindergarten Students Using Melodic Learning, Tara Hart

Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study is to investigate a non-traditional method of enhancing language through the use of songs, chants, and rhymes. To investigate this, data was systematically collected and then analyzed in order to determine the specific benefits on the development of oral and written language from the use of these strategies. Prior to the study, each student was assessed using the second edition of the Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA2). Using the Word Analysis assessment, they were tested on their ability to identify uppercase and lowercase letters of the alphabet, rhyme, determine initial sounds of words, and read sight …

The Liberation Of The Heroine In Red Riding Hood : A Study On Feminist And Postfeminist Discourses, Hiu Yan Cheng Feb 2015

The Liberation Of The Heroine In Red Riding Hood : A Study On Feminist And Postfeminist Discourses, Hiu Yan Cheng

Lingnan Theses

Fairy tales’ magic is powerful because it has the potential to enter different cultures at different times. They teleport readers and displace them in alternative realities to shock them with a profoundly different world where there are possibilities they have not seen and impossibilities to be accepted. However, despite the clichéd opening of most fairy tales— “once upon a time”, the lack of a traceable origin and the arbitrariness of the tales’ contextualization, they are not ‘timeless’ or ‘universal’. These tales have a history. They evolve with new plots, characterizations and morals in response to the dominant discourses in different …

“For It Acordeth Noght To Kinde”: Remediating Gower’S Confessio Amantis In Machinima, Sarah L. Higley

Accessus

Visual adaptation of a medieval text, as tempting as it is in film of any kind, is never an easy conversion, and all the more so if the original is as formally structured as John Gower’s Confessio Amantis. This essay examines the philosophy and difficulties of making a “medieval motion picture” (animated and narrated by the author) reflect the message of three of Gower’s tales (“The Travelers and the Angel,” “Canace and Machaire,” “Florent”) as well as the multimedia properties of the manuscripts that house them, their illuminations beckoning us into colorful virtual worlds. In referencing theories of adaptation, …

Nurturing Young Learners In Practice: A Case Study Of Key Teacher Dispositions That Support Child Centered Practice In An Urban Preschool Environment, Lorraine Ricchezza Feb 2015

Nurturing Young Learners In Practice: A Case Study Of Key Teacher Dispositions That Support Child Centered Practice In An Urban Preschool Environment, Lorraine Ricchezza

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines an educator's disposition to positively impact children's cognitive and social emotional development in the preschool setting as evidenced in child centered practices that arouse curiosity, foster social interaction, and promote children's learning as expressed in interpersonal interactions that affirm differences among young children in an urban preschool setting. Through examination and interpretation, this study delineates educator perspectives on child differences and reciprocal relationships as integral to developmentally appropriate practice. Seven female educators at the ABC Elementary School in Urban City, New Jersey participated in this study. This study involved key data sources. During 8 months of data …

A Long, Hard Trial: The Korean Translations Of The Book Of Mormon, Gerrit Van Dyk Feb 2015

A Long, Hard Trial: The Korean Translations Of The Book Of Mormon, Gerrit Van Dyk

Faculty Publications

While some of the story of the Korean translations of the Book of Mormon is told in fragments throughout the documents chronicling the rise of the LDS Church in Korea, most notably Ronald K. Nielsen’s “Hangukeopan Mormongyeong Huesaenggwa Noryeok Kyeoshil,” no one source has the whole story, including the present study. This article will draw on those prior secondary sources as well as accounts from those who lived the events themselves, as told in their personal journals, letters, and reminiscences. The epigraph is a common (mis)conception by members and missionaries who have served in South Korea. In fact, …

Best Practices For Facilitating Diversity In The Online Classroom, Michelle Anne Rog

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This project, Facilitating Diversity in the Online Classroom – Best Practices, explores four best practices for facilitating diversity in the online classroom. The philosophical and ethical framework for this study is built on Martin Buber’s belief that people must be open to dialogue and interested in participating in it and that they stay attentive to another’s uniqueness and how it matters. Grounded in the theory of Critical Pedagogy, this study urges teachers to be open-minded to change and to affect and shape he environment around them. The eLearning course is designed to offer teachers a foundational set of best practices …
