Re-Imagining Home: Operation Pedro Pan In The Cuban-American Imaginary, Yvette Fuentes

Quadrivium: A Journal of Multidisciplinary Scholarship

An exploration of the traumatic events of Operation Pedro Pan, where over 14,000 Cuban children traveled alone to the United States between December 1960 and October 1962. The program was organized by the Catholic Welfare Bureau of Miami and the U.S. State Department due to requests from Cuban parents who feared their children would be indoctrinated in Marxism by the new revolutionary government.

Being A "Good Parent" In Parent-Teacher Conferences, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore Feb 2015

Being A "Good Parent" In Parent-Teacher Conferences, Danielle M. Pillet-Shore

Communication

This research advances our understanding of what constitutes a "good parent" in the course of actual social interaction. Examining video-recorded naturally occurring parent-teacher conferences, this article shows that, while teachers deliver student-praising utterances, parents may display that they are gaining knowledge; but when teachers’ actions adumbrate student-criticizing utterances, parents systematically display prior knowledge. This article elucidates the details of how teachers and parents tacitly collaborate to enable parents to express student-troubles first, demonstrating that parents display competence -- appropriate involvement with children’s schooling -- by asserting their prior knowledge of, and/or claiming/describing their efforts to remedy, student-troubles. People (have to) …

Giving And Receiving Compliments: What Are Your Intentions?, Tyler Karlberg, Nancy Moua, Emily Mcdonough, Sam Alakija Feb 2015

Giving And Receiving Compliments: What Are Your Intentions?, Tyler Karlberg, Nancy Moua, Emily Mcdonough, Sam Alakija

Concordia Journal of Communication Research

Compliments are a part of everyday communication in American culture. While many use compliments in order to gain compliance or to show interest in further developing a relationship, underlying intentions may be different than what is perceived by the receiver. The researchers of this study investigated the difference in the motivations of compliments both given and received based on different categories. Using a survey of students at a faithbased university in the Midwest, researchers were able to gather insight into the intentions of giving compliments as well as the perception of received compliments.

Understanding Refugees In Worcester, Ma, Anita Fábos, Maya Pilgrim, Muinate Said-Ali, Joseph Krahe, Zack Ostiller

Mosakowski Institute for Public Enterprise

Worcester, Massachusetts serves as the entry point to America for more refugees than any other municipality in Massachusetts, with more than 2,000 refugees settling there between 2007 and 2012. However, there has been a lack of information about how the livelihoods and experiences of refugees differ from those of the foreign-born population. This report uses data from the U.S. Census Bureau and the Bureau of Population, Refugee, and Migration to present a snapshot of the social, educational, and economic status of refugees in Worcester and identifies several areas for future data and research needs relating to refugee resettlement both in …

The Role Of Culture In Comics Of The Quotidian, Frank Bramlett Feb 2015

The Role Of Culture In Comics Of The Quotidian, Frank Bramlett

English Faculty Publications

Studies of the quotidian often start from a social sciences perspective that daily life is made up of routine practices and ingrained assumptions. This is also found in studies of literature, art and economics. The premise of the quotidian, however, must be examined through a lens of culture. This essay explores how the notion of the quotidian in comics rests on culture, which in turn comprises various nexus of practice. Drawing evidence from Exit Wounds (by Rutu Modan) and Questionable Content (by Jeph Jacques), the essay extends the notion of the quotidian from a specific reference to ‘slice of life …

Implementing Voice Strategies In Extreme Negotiations: A Conversation With Christophe Caupenne, Successful Former Commando Of The French Raid Unit, Christophe Haag, Elizabeth Fresnel

Organization Management Journal

This article explores the role voice plays in extreme negotiation through the point of view of a practitioner. In this study, we invite Christophe Caupenne, a former Research, Assistance, Intervention, and Deterrence (RAID) chief—now a private consultant to top managers and professional negotiators—to write in detail about his expertise. It was the first time he had fully reflected upon how his voice and vocal strategies psychologically impacted critical negotiations. Our goal was to determine whether business negotiators could learn from their well-trained police counterparts, many of whom engaged in high-stakes negotiations. We augmented our expert’s essay with a 2-hour interview, …

Alphabetic Insertions In Five-Letter Palindromes, Jeff Grant Feb 2015

Alphabetic Insertions In Five-Letter Palindromes, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

In "A Palindromic Alphabetic Insertion" (WW, Nov. 1982), we displayed a set of 3-letter palindromes of the form A-A, covering every combination from AAA, chief signet-bearer in the land of Kens, under the Egyptian king Aspalut, through to AZA, a male given name of Hebrew origin meaning "the noble."

"Another Palindromic Insertion" (WW, Aug 1992) explored the letter set A--A, giving examples for all but three of the double-letter alphabetic insertions, from AAAA, a Tahitian interjection of laughter or ridicule, to AZZA, a wadi in Iran. Examples have now been found for the missing combinations.

Looking For The Longest Insider Word, Jim Puder Feb 2015

Looking For The Longest Insider Word, Jim Puder

Word Ways

The notion that physical objects may sometimes best be hidden by being left in plain sight, but camouflaged or disguised in some way, was famously propounded by Edgar Allan Poe in his celebrated short story, "The Purloined Letter." A wordplay incarnation of this idea is found in the fabrication of "insider" sentences, sentences akin to charade sentences in which occult non-sentence words are spelled out in consecutive letters of the sentence, albeit usually broken up into two or more parts by the sentence's word breaks and/or punctuation.

Knight-Graphable Words, Tristan Miller, Mike Keith

Word Ways

Imagine an arbitrarily large chessboard where some of the squares are labelled with distinct letters of the alphabet. A word is said to be knight-graphable (NG) if there exists some labeling such that a knight can spell out the word by starting on the square labelled with its first letter, then making a valid move to the square labelled with its second letter, and so on until the square labelled with the last letter is reached.

Palindromising The Days And Months, Jeff Grant

Word Ways

Near the beginning of Jim Puder's palindromic poem "The Devil's Dyad" in his article "Lycanthropus Palindromis" (WW, May 1998), the names Monday, Wednesday and Saturday are used in the second part of "Two Palindrome Recreations" (WW, Aug 2012), Jim cleverly works the months into individual palindromes.

After transposing the days and months (WW Aug 2014), here is my attempt at palindromizing them.

King's Moves In The Periodic Table, Darryl Francis Feb 2015

King's Moves In The Periodic Table, Darryl Francis

Word Ways

Playing with the names and symbols of the chemical elements has been a continuing theme in Word Ways. The first issue of Word Ways (back in February 1968) carried an item, An Elemental Problem, which quizzed readers with transposals of the names of 20 elements. Over the years, other articles have explored further transposals, transadditions and transdeletions, and so on. My articles of February 2002 and May 2006 investigated the existence of words and names spelled out when the symbols for chemical elements were spelled out in one continuous stream of letters.
