Taking The Plunge: Online Data Collection Using Mturk, L. Jean Harrison-Walker Sep 2015

Taking The Plunge: Online Data Collection Using Mturk, L. Jean Harrison-Walker

Atlantic Marketing Association Proceedings

Mechanical Turk, an online crowdsourcing service created in 2005 by Amazon.com, is gaining in popularity among academics as a source of subjects for survey research. The initial attraction is based on access to a very large pool of participants who can be accessed online producing rapid response at low cost with minimal effort on the part of the researcher. For the uninitiated, however, the task of designing and running a research project on MTurk is rather daunting.

This paper begins with an introduction to MTurk. We review the language of MTurk and explain how a researcher goes about setting up …

Language Policy And Bilingual Education For Immigrant Students At Public Schools In Japan, Naomi Asakura Sep 2015

Language Policy And Bilingual Education For Immigrant Students At Public Schools In Japan, Naomi Asakura

Dissertations and Theses

This thesis discusses the current Japanese language (nihongo) education for immigrant students at public schools in Japan and provides recommendations through the study of language policy and the comparison of bilingual education in the United States. The current situation of a decreasing birth rate and increasing aging population in Japan has led to the acceptance of more foreign workers. Due to this change, language education in Japan has increasing development. The focus of chapter 1 is on the theories of language policy. This paper particularly focuses on the ideas of Wright (2004), Neustupný (2006), Spolsky (2004), and Cooper (1989), and …

Experiential Metaphors: Create Anti-Negative Home Products, Hong Ying Guo Sep 2015

Experiential Metaphors: Create Anti-Negative Home Products, Hong Ying Guo

Theses

Experiential metaphor is a user-centered design approach and methodology that I developed for my thesis project. This approach can be applied to a design to influence a user's perception or design process to facilitate the designer's concept ideation. The intention of this approach is to create a pleasurable product experience and a positive emotional response through interaction with the product and interpretation of its meaning. Grounded in meaning association, which is correlated with non-linguistic cognitive metaphor and human emotional models, four different levels of experiential metaphor are formed by the synthesis of the metaphor structure and levels of emotional elicitation. …

Sino-Lac Ties: Trade Relationships And Asymmetric Dependency, E.S. Devadason, V.G.R. Chandran, S. Mubarik

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Previous studies have emphasized the asymmetry in the Sino-LAC partnership, solely based on their trade exchanges. This paper extends the boundaries of understanding structural asymmetries in the Sino-LAC trade, by considering unequal opportunities in this partnership. The latter is accounted for by deriving two-way export potentials from the Sino-LAC partnership. The analysis is pitched within China's multiple trade interactions with global partners, to reflect a broader internationalized concept of potential in terms of exports. On average, the gravity of LAC's trade promise with China appears to lie in continuing to grow the level of exports in agriculture. Incontrast, the model …

Network Analysis With Stochastic Grammars, Alan C. Lin

Theses and Dissertations

Digital forensics requires significant manual effort to identify items of evidentiary interest from the ever-increasing volume of data in modern computing systems. One of the tasks digital forensic examiners conduct is mentally extracting and constructing insights from unstructured sequences of events. This research assists examiners with the association and individualization analysis processes that make up this task with the development of a Stochastic Context -Free Grammars (SCFG) knowledge representation for digital forensics analysis of computer network traffic. SCFG is leveraged to provide context to the low-level data collected as evidence and to build behavior profiles. Upon discovering patterns, the analyst …

Does The Format Of Internal Control Disclosures Matter? An Experimental Investigation Of Nonprofessional Investor Behavior, Amanuel Fekade Tadesse Sep 2015

Does The Format Of Internal Control Disclosures Matter? An Experimental Investigation Of Nonprofessional Investor Behavior, Amanuel Fekade Tadesse

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study investigates whether the current lack of structure of internal control weakness disclosures (a narrative about the reliability of the financial reporting system) leads nonprofessional investors to make differential investment decisions. Using the non-accelerated filer (smaller public company) setting, where nonprofessional investors are likely to consume unaudited internal control reports in their investing judgments and decisions, I examine two facets of internal control disclosure formats: presentation salience and disaggregation of material weaknesses. A 2 x 2 between-participants behavioral experiment was conducted with internal control presentation salience (bulleted vs. in-text) and disaggregation level (a single material weakness vs. a combination …

Extending The Jd-R Approach To Predicting Work/Study Engagement And Creative Performance : Evidences From Chinese Employees And Students, Mengyuan Wu

Lingnan Theses

Although innovation and creativity play an increasingly important role in helping organizations survive in today’s highly competitive environment, less is known about the antecedents and mechanisms of creative performance in the Chinese context. To bridge the gap of knowledge, this thesis adopted and extended Bakker (2011)’s Job Demands-Resources model (JD-R model) to exploring four antecedents of creative performance, namely, creative requirement (job demand), creative self-efficacy (personal resource), perceived support for creativity (job resource), and work/study engagement. It was hypothesized that engagement would mediate the positive effect of creative self-efficacy, perceived support for creativity and creative requirement on creative performance. Creative …

Political Reunification With Taiwan : Perspectives From The Leadership, Intellectuals And The General Public In Mainland China, Peiji Yu

Lingnan Theses

This thesis studies Mainland China’s standpoint of political reunification with Taiwan in the contemporary era (2008-2014). The exploration examines the perspectives of leadership, intellectuals and the general public under the analytical framework of state nationalism and popular nationalism.

In general, the standpoints that “Taiwan as an integral part of China” and a “political reunification with Taiwan should be realized” are still the mainstream views in Mainland China. However, detailed reunification views vary among the different perspectives. In terms of the state nationalism composed by leadership and establishment intellectuals, the settlement of the Taiwan issue and the realization of the complete …

Beyond Interpretation: The Need For English-Spanish Bilingual Psychotherapists In Counseling Centers, Stephanie Guilman Sep 2015

Beyond Interpretation: The Need For English-Spanish Bilingual Psychotherapists In Counseling Centers, Stephanie Guilman

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Despite the cultural and linguistic diversity that exists in the United States of America, bilingualism and multiculturalism have been neglected, if not almost completely ignored, in the field of psychotherapy. When counselors and clients are unable to commuanicate due to language barriers and cultural disconnect, the client often leaves the counseling session feeling unsatisfied and is more likely to discontinue therapy altogether. This article focuses on Spanish-speaking clients seeking mental health services in the United States, surveying the available literature to argue that that clients who receive therapy in their native language are better able to express themselves and form …
