Two Ethnographic Researchers Embark On A Narrative Journey, Randa Abbas, Deborah Court Sep 2015

Two Ethnographic Researchers Embark On A Narrative Journey, Randa Abbas, Deborah Court

The Qualitative Report

In this article two ethnographic researchers present a life story that emerged, almost against their will, as one of 120 in-depth interviews with Israeli Druze. The ethnographic study was designed to provide understanding of Israeli Druze society today through the discovery of thematic patterns. One interviewee, however, simply refused to follow the loosely structured interview format and told her story. Hana's story about the importance of her father in her professional success, and about her struggles to abide by the tenets of her religion, shed new light on the ethnographic data and taught these two researchers some new methodological sensibilities.

The Last Supper Poem, Muayad Mahdi Faisal

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The grammatical text contains various and multiple signs that represent what the author wants from his text, and the ideas it expresses. The methods that study linguistic production are many and diverse, all of which aim to reach a comprehensive analysis of the text and its elements. The method of (text grammar) is one of the distinctive methods in analyzing linguistic texts and revealing their hidden meanings in a way that contributes to understanding their meanings and the connotations they contain, which is what made us adopt this method in this study. In addition, the chosen text here is a …

Tonal Alignment And Segmental Timing In English-Speaking Children, Afua Blay Sep 2015

Tonal Alignment And Segmental Timing In English-Speaking Children, Afua Blay

Purdue Linguistic Association Symposium

Tonal alignment has been shown to be sensitive to segmental timing. This suggests that development of the former may be influenced by the latter. The developmental literature reports that English-speaking children do not attain adult-like competence in segmental timing until after age 6. While this suggests that the ability for alignment may be mastered after this age, this possibility is speculative due to paucity of data. Accordingly, the present study sought to determine whether 7- and 8-year old English-speaking children exhibit adult-like alignment and segmental timing in their speech. Seven children (ages 7 and 8) and 10 adults (ages 19 …

Information Diffusion, Facebook Clusters, And The Simplicial Model Of Social Aggregation: A Computational Simulation Of Simplicial Diffusers For Community Health Interventions, Kerk Kee, Lisa Sparks, Daniele C. Struppa, Mirco A. Manucci, Alberto Damiano

Communication Faculty Articles and Research

By integrating the simplicial model of social aggregation with existing research on opinion leadership and diffusion networks, this article introduces the constructs of simplicial diffusers (mathematically defined as nodes embedded in simplexes; a simplex is a socially bonded cluster) and simplicial diffusing sets (mathematically defined as minimal covers of a simplicial complex; a simplicial complex is a social aggregation in which socially bonded clusters are embedded) to propose a strategic approach for information diffusion of cancer screenings as a health intervention on Facebook for community cancer prevention and control. This approach is novel in its incorporation of interpersonally bonded clusters, …

Experiences Of Multilingual Social Workers : Trauma Therapy In Spanish And English, Emily H. Aviles Sep 2015

Experiences Of Multilingual Social Workers : Trauma Therapy In Spanish And English, Emily H. Aviles

Theses, Dissertations, and Projects

This exploratory study examines the experiences of social workers engaging in multilingual—Spanish and English—therapy with individuals who speak both Spanish and English, identify as Latino/a, have a history of trauma, and identify as having a history (personal, familial) of immigration to the U.S. The study uses semi-structured interviews with 10 social workers to gather qualitative data about their experiences engaging in trauma therapy with individuals who identify as multilingual as well as Latino/a immigrants to the U.S. The project examines ways that multilingual clinicians process trauma with individuals in more than one language; paying attention to the ways clinicians think …

Use Of Inquiry-Based Learning In A Content-Based Physical Science Course For English Language Learners, Otto Joseph Kraus Sep 2015

Use Of Inquiry-Based Learning In A Content-Based Physical Science Course For English Language Learners, Otto Joseph Kraus

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this capstone was, how can inquiry-based learning be used in a content-based physical science class for English language learners? The project provides one teacher’s creation of seven lessons that incorporate inquiry-based learning techniques into a content-based physical science course for English language learners. The lessons are intended to concurrently teach state physical science standards and WIDA language standards. The methods and rationale for the lessons are based on the importance of experience to the learning of language (Jackson, 2013; Robinson, 2011), as well as the overlapping pedagogies of inquiry learning and language learning, known as …

Top-Down Modulation Of Visual Processing And Knowledge After 250 Ms Supports Object Constancy Of Category Decisions, He Schendan, G Ganis Sep 2015

Top-Down Modulation Of Visual Processing And Knowledge After 250 Ms Supports Object Constancy Of Category Decisions, He Schendan, G Ganis

School of Psychology

People categorize objects slowly when visual input is highly impoverished instead of optimal. While bottom-up models may explain a decision with optimal input, perceptual hypothesis testing (PHT) theories implicate top-down processes with impoverished input. Brain mechanisms and the time course of PHT are largely unknown. This event-related potential study used a neuroimaging paradigm that implicated prefrontal cortex in top-down modulation of occipitotemporal cortex. Subjects categorized more impoverished and less impoverished real and pseudo objects. PHT theories predict larger impoverishment effects for real than pseudo objects because top-down processes modulate knowledge only for real objects, but different PHT variants predict different …

A Literature Review Of Paternal Involvement In Prenatal Care, Mary Elizabeth Meier, Lorena Avillaneda Sep 2015

A Literature Review Of Paternal Involvement In Prenatal Care, Mary Elizabeth Meier, Lorena Avillaneda

Journal of Family Strengths

Pregnancy and the transition to parenthood are critical periods for parents to be provided with relevant care, information, and assistance. Unfortunately, fathers do not receive the same guidance and support by the health care system, policymakers, or programs as their partners do. This paper reviews twelve studies that address father transition to parenthood and involvement in prenatal care, the positive outcomes of father involvement on child well-being, and the current state of prenatal father involvement. Recommendations for increased paternal involvement in prenatal care include creating a more father friendly environment in the health care setting, providing prevention-oriented care for men …

Prediction Of Relevant Biomedical Documents: A Human Microbiome Case Study, Paul Thompson, Juliette C. Madan, Jason H. Moore Sep 2015

Prediction Of Relevant Biomedical Documents: A Human Microbiome Case Study, Paul Thompson, Juliette C. Madan, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Background:

Retrieving relevant biomedical literature has become increasingly difficult due to the large volume and rapid growth of biomedical publication. A query to a biomedical retrieval system often retrieves hundreds of results. Since the searcher will not likely consider all of these documents, ranking the documents is important. Ranking by recency, as PubMed does, takes into account only one factor indicating potential relevance. This study explores the use of the searcher’s relevance feedback judgments to support relevance ranking based on features more general than recency.

Results:

It was found that the researcher’s relevance judgments could be used to accurately predict …

Skilled Linguistic Action In English As A Second Language Learners’ Play Of World Of Warcraft (Wow): A Distributed View, Kristi J. Newgarden Sep 2015

Skilled Linguistic Action In English As A Second Language Learners’ Play Of World Of Warcraft (Wow): A Distributed View, Kristi J. Newgarden

Doctoral Dissertations

This research provokes an action-oriented understanding of second language (L2) learning, as illustrated in the dynamics of World of Warcraft (WoW) gameplay. L2 learners picked up affordances for learning to take skilled linguistic actions in authentic interactions with meaningful outcomes. Agency, orientation to sociocultural norms and pragmatic competence were distributed in real-time languaging as learners coordinated actions using embodied, material and linguistic resources. Two studies examined data from a course in which English as a Second Language learners and native English speaking (NES) college students played WoW and explored its culture. Frames of ecological psychology and distributed language were applied …

Assessing Instructional Leadership In Rural New Mexico: An Exploration Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (Pimrs), Christiana Sisneros Sep 2015

Assessing Instructional Leadership In Rural New Mexico: An Exploration Of The Reliability And Validity Of The Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (Pimrs), Christiana Sisneros

Teacher Education, Educational Leadership & Policy ETDs

This study examined the validity and reliability of the Principal Instructional Management Rating Scale (PIMRS; Hallinger, 1985) for use among teachers in a rural school district. The problem addressed by this study was the need for a well-substantiated tool, which demonstrated reliable and valid assessments of principal leadership skills among elementary and secondary teachers. Measuring principal leadership behaviors is valuable and necessary for the on-going study of the phenomenon of effective school leadership. This was a study involving one rural, northern New Mexico school district, with an enrollment of approximately 4,000 students and a teacher population of 214. The survey …

Parallel Read-Alouds: A Bilingual Repeated Read-Aloud And Retelling Intervention For Kindergarten Ells, Darci Melchor

Doctoral Dissertations

Teachers working with young ELLs at risk for literacy underachievement lack research-based practices to maximize the use of picture book read-alouds to accelerate language comprehension outcomes. This study investigated the effects of 8-22 weeks of small group, bilingual repeated read-aloud and retelling intervention, the parallel read-aloud intervention, on Vietnamese ELL kindergarteners’ retelling skills, focusing on the use of story grammar elements and language complexity and productivity. The study was conducted using a multiple-baseline single subject design with 5 subjects. Students’ growth in the overall quality of narrative retelling was assessed weekly using the Test of Narrative Retell (TNR) and their …

Teacher Motivations For Digital And Media Literacy: An Examination Of Turkish Educators, Renee Hobbs, Sait Tuzel Sep 2015

Teacher Motivations For Digital And Media Literacy: An Examination Of Turkish Educators, Renee Hobbs, Sait Tuzel

Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Educators have a variety of beliefs and attitudes about the best ways to support students' critical thinking, creativity, communication and collaboration skills by connecting the classroom to contemporary society, mass media and popular culture. Teachers who advance digital and media literacy may have a complex set of attitudes and habits of mind that influence their motivations to use digital media for learning. We conducted a survey research with a sample of 2820 Turkish educators to examine teachers' motivations for digital learning, using a 48‐item Likert scale instrument that assesses teachers' perception of the value and relevance of six conceptual themes, …

Feature Mismatches: Consequences For Syntax, Morphology And Semantics, Peter W. Smith Sep 2015

Feature Mismatches: Consequences For Syntax, Morphology And Semantics, Peter W. Smith

Doctoral Dissertations

In this dissertation, I investigate the nature of grammatical features and propose that a grammatical feature is split into two halves: one half (uF) that is legible to the morphological component and one half (iF) that is legible to the semantic component. Though these halves in general match up, the values can be distinct or one can be missing altogether. Throughout the dissertation, I investigate various phenomena where the values of the two halves of the feature do not line up, looking at the mass/count distinction, collective nouns in (British) English, and quantified noun phrases in Russian, among others.

I …
