Curb Your Enthusiasm For Pigovian Taxes, Victor Fleischer
Curb Your Enthusiasm For Pigovian Taxes, Victor Fleischer
Vanderbilt Law Review
Pigovian (or "corrective") taxes have been proposed or enacted on dozens of harmful products and activities: carbon, gasoline, fat, sugar, guns, cigarettes, alcohol, traffic, zoning, executive pay, and financial transactions, among others. Academics of all political stripes are mystified by the public's inability to see the merits of using Pigovian taxes more frequently to address serious social harms, some even calling for the creation of a "Pigovian state." This academic enthusiasm for Pigovian taxes should be tempered. A Pigovian tax is easy to design-as a uniform excise tax-if one assumes that each individual causes the same amount of harm with …

Dreissenid Mussel Research Priorities Workshop, Mark D. Sytsma, Stephen Phillips, Timothy D. Counihan
Center for Lakes and Reservoirs Publications and Presentations
Currently, dreissenid mussels have yet to be detected in the northwestern part of the United States and western Canada. Infestation of one of the jurisdictions within the mussel-free Pacific Northwest would likely have significant economic, societal and environmental implications for the entire region. Understanding the biology and environmental tolerances of dreissenid mussels, and effectiveness of various management strategies, is key to prevention.
On November 4-5, 2015, the Aquatic Bioinvasion Research and Policy Institute and the Center for Lakes and Reservoirs at Portland State University, the US Geological Survey, and the Pacific States Marine Fisheries Commission, convened a Dreissenid Mussel Research …

The Physiology And Psychology Of Exercise And Parkinson's Disease, Jess Gibson
Senior Honors Theses
Parkinson’s disease is one of the most common degenerative neurological disorders and is currently lacking a cure. While physicians have long debated over the best treatment for Parkinson’s symptoms, treatments such as oral medication and deep brain stimulation have not yet shown to be a permanent solution to the disease. Recently, exercise has emerged as a contender in the fight against Parkinson’s and physicians and physiotherapists have been investigating the benefits of prescribing exercise programs to patients in an effort to slow progression of Parkinson’s symptoms. The following presents an analysis of the effects of exercise on Parkinson’s symptoms and …

Weighing The Options: Conversations On The Use Of Performance Enhancing Gear In Powerlifting, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Jan Todd
School of Business Faculty Research
The subject of supportive gear in powerlifting has been controversial from the earliest days in the sport. While our article "Shifting Gear," also in this issue, provides an historical overview of the use of powerlifting gear, we came to believe as we were working on it that including the voices of active and retired powerlifters would broaden our understanding of this debate. Accordingly, we interviewed a number of individuals with different backgrounds in the sport in order to explore their attitudes and experiences with gear. Our hope is that their thoughts on this important topic will help readers develop a …

Shifting Gear: A Historical Analysis Of The Use Of Supportive Apparel In Powerlifting, Jan Todd, Dominic G. Morais, Ben Pollack, Terry Todd
School of Business Faculty Research
In many ways, powerlifting is an odd sport. Competitors do not run or jump; no balls, bats, or rackets are used; and only one competitor "plays" on the lifting platform at a time. Judging can be highly subjective; three judges intently watch as the athlete lifts the loaded barbell nine separate times over the course of the competition. There is no instant replay and most lifts take less than ten seconds to perform. At the end of the lift, each judge throws a switch; if at least two white lights appear, the lift is good; if two or more lights …

Hypnobirth: Theories And Practices For Healthcare Professionals By Yulia Watters (Review), Susan Stuntzner
Counseling Faculty Publications
Hypnobirth: Theories and Practices for Healthcare Professionals is a book written for mental health and medical professionals, and caregivers intimately involved in the birthing process of the expectant mother. It is intended to inform professionals and individuals about the relevance and role of hypnobirthing during the pregnancy and birthing process and to help them understand the connection between medical and alternative health practices. Because of this, professionals are provided with the opportunity to learn and understand that one approach (i.e., medical versus alternative practices) does not have to necessarily exclude the other and there is a place for both throughout …

Detection Methods And Intestinal Adherence Of Non-O157 Shiga Toxin-Producing Escherichia Coli, Zachary R. Stromberg
School of Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) are enteric pathogens of humans. Cattle serve as a reservoir and harbor STEC in their intestines. Intimin-positive STEC are referred to as enterohemorrhagic E.coli (EHEC). Seven serogroups (O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, O145, and O157) account for the majority of illness due to STEC and are hereafter referred to as STEC/EHEC-7. To improve detection, enrichment broths were compared for supporting growth of STEC-7 and STEC O104:H4 (STEC-8). In pure culture, STEC enriched in trypticase soy broth (TSB) had significantly greater growth compared to TSB containing antimicrobials. In fecal samples, E. coli broth enrichment yielded …

The Study Of Effective Tier Ii Reading Interventions For Primary Grade Students, Sheila Cox-Hines
Dissertations
The purpose of this study was to determine effective reading interventions for primary grade students, utilizing the Response to Intervention (RtI) model. The purpose of RtI is to enhance the quality of education for children, if appropriate levels of academic instruction are present (Hanover Research, 2015). The research questions were posed to garner perspectives of the Intervention Team (IT) leaders as to Tier II interventions that aided students who indicated difficulty with reading, and the duration of the intervention, prior to achieving progress toward the specified goal. Additionally, research questions were stated to determine which Tier II reading intervention yielded …

Risk-aversion has generally been found to decrease in income. This may lead one to expect that poor countries will be more risk-averse than rich countries. Recent comparative findings with students suggest the opposite, potentially giving rise to a risk-income paradox. Findings with students, however, may result from selection effects. We test whether a paradox indeed exists by measuring the risk preferences of over 500 household heads representative of the highlands of Ethiopia. We find high degrees of risk tolerance, consistent with the evidence obtained for students. We also find risk tolerance to increase in income proxies, thus completing the paradox. …
