Sugar Bush Management In Ontario: Identification Of Resilient Adaptation Strategies For A Changing Climate, Kaitlin Richardson Jan 2015

Sugar Bush Management In Ontario: Identification Of Resilient Adaptation Strategies For A Changing Climate, Kaitlin Richardson

Geography and Environmental Studies Major Research Papers

The purpose of this research is to gain a better understanding of human-facilitated silvicultural, biodiversity and genetic forest management in Ontario sugar bushes through a biogeographical lens to determine the social and ecological resilience to climate change impacts. Because sugar bushes are highly managed and therefore ecologically different than unmanaged sugar maple forests, a literature review combined with primary farm-level research will help to determine best management practices and adaptation decision-making to increase the resilience of these stands. The overarching conclusion is that maple syrup producers in Ontario need to entrench climate change objectives within forest management.

Population Genomics Reveals Seahorses (Hippocampus Erectus) Of The Western Mid-Atlantic Coast To Be Residents Rather Than Vagrants, J. T. Boehm, John Waldman, John D. Robinson, Michael J. Hickerson Jan 2015

Population Genomics Reveals Seahorses (Hippocampus Erectus) Of The Western Mid-Atlantic Coast To Be Residents Rather Than Vagrants, J. T. Boehm, John Waldman, John D. Robinson, Michael J. Hickerson

Publications and Research

Understanding population structure and areas of demographic persistence and transients is critical for effective species management. However, direct observational evidence to address the geographic scale and delineation of ephemeral or persistent populations for many marine fishes is limited. The Lined seahorse (Hippocampus erectus) can be commonly found in three western Atlantic zoogeographic provinces, though inhabitants of the temperate northern Virginia Province are often considered tropical vagrants that only arrive during warm seasons from the southern provinces and perish as temperatures decline. Although genetics can locate regions of historical population persistence and isolation, previous evidence of Virginia Province persistence is only …

Spatial And Seasonal Responses Of Precipitation In The Ganges And Brahmaputra River Basins To Enso And Indian Ocean Dipole Modes: Implications For Flooding And Drought, M. S. Pervez, G. M. Henebry

Natural Resource Management Faculty Publications

We evaluated the spatial and seasonal responses of precipitation in the Ganges and Brahmaputra basins as modulated by the El Niño Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and Indian Ocean Dipole (IOD) modes using Global Precipitation Climatology Centre (GPCC) full data reanalysis of monthly global land-surface precipitation data from 1901 to 2010 with a spatial resolution of 0.5° × 0.5°. The GPCC monthly total precipitation climatology targeting the period 1951–2000 was used to compute gridded monthly anomalies for the entire time period. The gridded monthly anomalies were averaged for the years influenced by combinations of climate modes. Occurrences of El Niño alone significantly …

Boarding Patients Who Require Involuntary Mental Health Examinations In Florida, Laura H. Brennaman

Nursing ETDs

This study addressed the gaps in knowledge about psychiatric boarding with the aims of (a) determining the extent of psychiatric boarding in Florida hospitals for individuals meeting criteria for involuntary psychiatric examination and (b) explaining what health services system resources and individual patient determinants contribute to psychiatric boarding. Individuals who go to general hospital emergency departments (EDs) in need of involuntary mental health examinations sometimes must wait in EDs for admission to inpatient units because of the critical shortage of inpatient or crisis mental health services. The process of keeping patients in the ED who are waiting 4 hours or …

How And Why Emigration Matters: Examining The Emergence Of New “Emigration Regimes” And Its Impact On Public Administration In Kyrgyzstan, Ariane Chebel D’Appollonia, Jyldyz T. Kasymova Jan 2015

How And Why Emigration Matters: Examining The Emergence Of New “Emigration Regimes” And Its Impact On Public Administration In Kyrgyzstan, Ariane Chebel D’Appollonia, Jyldyz T. Kasymova

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Most immigration studies have focused on migrant receiving states. By contrast, little attention has been paid to the emigration policies of sending states. This article examines several administrative reforms implemented in Kyrgyzstan to regulate emigration. Our findings regarding the actual outcomes of these strategies are mixed. If some progress has been made in defending the rights of Kyrgyz workers abroad and guaranteeing the flow of remittances, several negative impacts can be identified. These include the reliance on remittances and the disruption of the social fabric, especially in rural communities. We also find that the growing “culture of emigration” undermines civic …

Are States With Larger Than Average Black Populations Really The Worst Places To Live In The Usa? A Spatial Equilibrium Approach To Ranking Quality Of Life, Maury Granger, Gregory N. Price Jan 2015

Are States With Larger Than Average Black Populations Really The Worst Places To Live In The Usa? A Spatial Equilibrium Approach To Ranking Quality Of Life, Maury Granger, Gregory N. Price

Journal of Public Management & Social Policy

Quality-of-life rankings based on location-specific attributes/local amenities could induce elected official and policy makers into incorrectly constructing economic development plans if the ranking scheme was flawed. Hierarchical rankings of states in the USA in terms of quality-of-life that use an explicit amenity accounting method, typically assign lower ranks to states with large Black American populations. We show that these rankings utilize methodologies that are not based on economic theory, and that they arbitrarily construct ranking schemes about what individuals and firms value about the places where they locate. This pick-and-choose amenities accounting approach has its merits; however, we show that …

Political Islam And Religious Violence In Post-New Order Indonesia, Abdil Mughis Mudhoffir

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This paper tries to understand why religious violence increasingly occurs in post-New Order Indonesia. There are two dominant views in understanding this. First, the secu- rity approach that perceives the violence as a result of the emergent of “radical” agent of political Islam in the more open political space. In this regard, the state is considered weak because the iron hand as used by the authoritarian regime in the past New Order has disappeared. Thus, the strong security instruments are needed as a solution, such as the law on anti-terrorism and the police force of anti-terrorism (Densus 88). Second, the …

The Politics Of Civil Society Organizations (Csos) Post-Reformation 1998, Aditya Perdana

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

After the reformation (reformasi) in 1998, some civil society organizations (CSOs) have en- dorsed policy changes from outside the government and have involved in many ministries’ assistance team to implement government’s development programs. These CSOs’ political action changes from outside to become inside the government are caused by the openness of political opportunity from political regime after Reformasi. Even though CSOs have used these political opportunities, these organizations faced seriously challenges in politi- cal field such as the fragmented of CSOs to endorse many policy reform and changes. In addition, there is lack of supporting changes in political culture structures …

At The Same Time We Were Pointing A Finger At You..., Office Of Arts + Cultural Programming, Peak Performances At Montclair State University

2014-2015 Discover the Heartbeat of Creative Life

Provocative South African choreographer Robyn Orlin returns to Peak Performances after the success of 2011’s exuberant Walking next to our shoes… For her latest work, she joins forces with Germaine Acogny’s famed Compagnie Jant-Bi, a touchstone of new and traditional African dance in Dakar, to investigate the charged and often taboo issue of the human body itself. Questioning standards of ugliness and beauty, illness and health, Orlin places the body itself at the heart of the debate, revealing the range of pressures to which it is subjected, especially in the African context.

Patronage Driven Corruption Undermining The Fight Against Poverty In Uganda, Mbabazi Godfrey, Pyeong Jun Yu Jan 2015

Patronage Driven Corruption Undermining The Fight Against Poverty In Uganda, Mbabazi Godfrey, Pyeong Jun Yu

African Social Science Review

Uganda has been a den of corruption for a long time, a “disease” that has eaten up the entire society. Surprisingly or not, the Ugandan political machine has ensured that this practice thrives to benefit its interests at the expense of the majority poor. This study reveals that Uganda’s patronage and corruption quandary emanated from the British Colonial administrative system which was based on using a section of local people to rule over the rest and consequently rewarded them for supporting their policies and interests. With the intentioned absence of democratic rule, institutions that could condemn, exert public control and …

Questioning The Validity Of Race As A Social Construct: Examining Race And Ethnicity In The ‘Rainbow Nation’, Bob Heere, Matthew Walker, Heather Gibson, Brijesh Thapa, Sue Geldenhuys, Willie Coetzee Jan 2015

Questioning The Validity Of Race As A Social Construct: Examining Race And Ethnicity In The ‘Rainbow Nation’, Bob Heere, Matthew Walker, Heather Gibson, Brijesh Thapa, Sue Geldenhuys, Willie Coetzee

African Social Science Review

Governments have historically classified their populations according to race and ethnicity, which has been done to either exert power over minority groups or ensure equality among these groups. However, viewing ones racial identity through a historical lens raises doubts about the validity of race as a social construct, since the concept has seldom served as a strong foundation for social identity formation. As such, we posit that ethnicity is a more accurate predictor of identification than race. Using South Africa as the research context, we examine whether within each race group ethnic differences exist on national identity and social capital …
