On The Midnight Train To Georgia: Afro-Caribbeans And The New Great Migration To Atlanta, Latoya Asantelle Tavernier

Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects

In the 21st century, Atlanta, Georgia has become a major new immigrant destination. This study focuses on the migration of Afro-Caribbeans to Atlanta and uses data collected from in-depth interviews, ethnography, and the US Census to understand: 1) the factors that have contributed to the emergence of Atlanta as a new destination for Afro-Caribbean immigrants and 2) the ways in which Atlanta's large African American population, and its growing immigrant population, shape the incorporation of Afro-Caribbeans, as black immigrants, into the southern city. I find that Afro-Caribbeans are attracted to Atlanta for a variety of reasons, including warmer climate, job …

Traversing The Urban As A Woman In Cairo And Aswan, Mennat-Allah Yehia Mourad Feb 2015

Traversing The Urban As A Woman In Cairo And Aswan, Mennat-Allah Yehia Mourad

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis explores the hierarchical dynamics that govern the everydayness of women’s relationship to spaces. I argue that our conceptual understanding of space, especially through terms such as modern, cosmopolitan, tribal, village...etc, are all part of a lexicon that makes our everyday, but that also how we traverse the city, and the choices that we make of where to go and how to get there is an integral contributor of how a city is not only imagined but lived, and thus how the social imaginations that we believe govern our everyday is actually re-iterated. I argue that our choices as …

School of Medicine Publications

Background: Air pollution has been linked to gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) but no studies have evaluated impact of preconception and early pregnancy air pollution exposures on GDM risk.

Methods: Electronic medical records provided data on 219,952 singleton deliveries to mothers with (n=11,334) and without GDM (n=208,618). Average maternal exposures to particulate matter (PM) ≤ 2.5μm (PM2.5) and PM2.5 constituents, PM ≤ 10μm (PM10), nitrogen oxides (NOx), carbon monoxide, sulfur dioxide (SO2) and ozone (O3) were estimated for the 3-month preconception window, first trimester, and gestational weeks 1-24 based on modified Community Multiscale Air Quality models for delivery hospital referral regions. …

A Morettian Literary Atlas Of Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo In Three Early Realist Novels: Cairo Modern, Khan Al-Khalili, And Midaq Alley, Paul A. Sundberg Feb 2015

A Morettian Literary Atlas Of Naguib Mahfouz's Cairo In Three Early Realist Novels: Cairo Modern, Khan Al-Khalili, And Midaq Alley, Paul A. Sundberg

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis includes a variey of “literary map experiements” on a dataset of mappable, non-generic, places found in three early realist “Cairo novels” by Naguib Mahfouz: Cairo Modern (1945), Khan al-Khalili (1946) and Midaq Alley (1947) and analyses of the mapped results. Experiments in the “atlas” are conducted on each novel separately and – in a more ‘distant” reading – on combinations of the three novels. The methodology is one originated by Stanford literary historian Franco Moretti in his Atlas of the European Novel 1800-1900 and Graphs, Maps, Trees: Abstract Models for a Lierary History. To the researcher’s knowledge, this …

Evaluation Of Green Building Rating Systems For Egypt, Hebaalla Mostafa Karmany

Theses and Dissertations

The average life of most structural types of buildings is fifty years. This projected lifespan will accordingly have an impact not only on the current inhabitants but also on the future generations. Therefore, nowadays, the subject of environmental conditions, and how our actions affect it, is of considerable consideration. The Egyptian economy was previously dependent on the agricultural, industrial, and transportation sector. Today, the construction industry plays an important role in the economic growth of the country, which is the key to developing our quality of life. Despite the difficult conditions and political instability facing Egypt in the last four …

Individualism And Sensitivity Of Investment To Stock Prices: Evidence From Emerging Markets, Ayatallah Mohamed Amin Feb 2015

Individualism And Sensitivity Of Investment To Stock Prices: Evidence From Emerging Markets, Ayatallah Mohamed Amin

Theses and Dissertations

Chui et al. (2010) argue that cultures with high levels of individualism are defined by overconfidence and self-attribution bias. Markus and Kitayama (1991) and Heine et al. (1999) note that these biases lead to less efficient stock prices with excess volatility. Foucault and Frésard (2012) show that sensitivity of investment to stock prices is an increasing function of informativeness of stock prices. They argue that sensitivity of investment to stock prices increase because value-maximizing managers are forced to use all available information to forecast the cash flows of their capital allocation decisions. They argue that information revealed via informative stock …

A Question Of Trans-Boudary Rivers: Legal Rules, A Coherent System Or A Vacant Canyon: Towards A Constructivist Approach, Wesam Ali

Theses and Dissertations

Trans-boundary Rivers form an important context for relations between multiple sovereign states. The paper tackles the dynamics of a state’s behaviour, regarding trans-boundary Rivers, through time so that state relations are not a constant competition or cooperation. The paper responds to the behavioural changes amongst states by adopting a constructivist approach. By using constructivist approach, this paper argues that legal norms are generated through interactions and communications between states. Multiple criteria include political, geographic, economic, and legal contexts determine state relations. The Indus and Euphrates basins demonstrate how legal norms are determined by each state subject to their geographic, economic …

The Discourse Of Drug Use In Egypt: An Interdisciplinary Exploratory Study, Alejandro Gutierrez Feb 2015

The Discourse Of Drug Use In Egypt: An Interdisciplinary Exploratory Study, Alejandro Gutierrez

Theses and Dissertations

This thesis sets out to better understand how Egyptian society constructs and labels the ‘deviant’ behavior of drug use. However, it is not about drugs per se, it is about scrutinizing the complex process through which Egyptian society encounters, experiences, and regulates behavior. Through an interdisciplinary approach, it builds an alternative and critical understanding of a stigmatized group of individuals by describing how they shape or are shaped by the dynamic system in which they exist. Thus, it creates a conversation between the structures of power that regulate the moral economy of society on the one hand and individuals practicing …

Use Of Social Media By Governments To Enhance Online Civic Engagement: The Case Of Egypt, Ayman H. Elsherbiny

Theses and Dissertations

This research examines the extent to which the use of social media by the Egyptian government in its communication with the public enhances online civic engagement. Its importance lies in the fact that several studies highlighted the benefits of the utilization of social media by governments in engaging with the public. This thesis defines civic engagement as the involvement of citizens in online activities that seek to address public issues through the social media platforms of the Egyptian government. It focuses on the five types of online civic engagement behavior as described by Denning (2001), i.e. collection of information, publication …

The Contractual Family: The Role Of The Market In Shaping Family Formations And Rights, Deborah Zalesne Feb 2015

The Contractual Family: The Role Of The Market In Shaping Family Formations And Rights, Deborah Zalesne

Cardozo Law Review

Even with federal recognition of marriage equality and the increasing number of states that allow same-sex marriage, marriage is not available or not desirable to everyone. Yet marriage remains a prerequisite to many legal protections. Despite the popularity and prevalence of alternative reproductive technologies (ART) as a means of having a child when natural childbirth is not feasible, biology similarly remains a prerequisite to many legal protections and rights over one's children. Within this paradigm, the ever-growing number of families and couples not fitting the traditional mold are forced to search other areas of the law, such as contract law, …

The Logging Ban Policy In Addressing Deforestation: A Comparison Between Thailand And Indonesia, Safrina Safrina Jan 2015

The Logging Ban Policy In Addressing Deforestation: A Comparison Between Thailand And Indonesia, Safrina Safrina

Indonesian Journal of International Law

The logging ban policy is applying in several countries, such as Thailand and Indonesia, in order to deal with deforestation and forest degradation in natural forests. However, both countries still have had difficulties resolving the problem. The logging ban in Thailand does not work as expected due to centralized systems of forestry policy that still applies in Thailand. However, Indonesia is actively adjusting the decentralized system, which gives authority to local governments to set policies regarding forestry. The effectiveness of logging ban to achieve conservation goals and economic development continues to be debated; however, it should be noted that the …

Attitudes And Perceptions Of Young Men Towards Gender Equality And Violence In Timor-Leste, Ann Wigglesworth, Sara Niner, Dharmalingam Arunachalam, Abel Boavida Dos Santos, Mateus Tilman

Journal of International Women's Studies

This article examines attitudes and perceptions of young men toward gender relations and gender-based violence in post-conflict Timor-Leste. A high level of domestic violence is reported and a law against domestic violence has been passed in recent years. In 2013, a research team surveyed almost 500 young men using the Gender-Equitable Men (GEM) Scale in both rural and urban contexts. It was found that young men become less gender equitable as they get older, and the environment they grow up in influences their gender attitudes. Existing contradictions and tensions between national government policy and local customary practices are well-known, and …

Natural Woman, Unnatural Mother: The Convergence Of Motherhood And The "Natural" World In Alice Walker’S Meridian, Sampada Chavan Jan 2015

Natural Woman, Unnatural Mother: The Convergence Of Motherhood And The "Natural" World In Alice Walker’S Meridian, Sampada Chavan

Journal of International Women's Studies

Many cultures around the world equate being womanly to being motherly. However, all women are not physically or psychologically equipped to handle motherhood. What happens to these women who are burdened with motherhood and are unable to deal with it? Alice Walker’s protagonist in her novel Meridian is an otherwise accomplished woman, but she fumbles with the notion of ideal woman-ness. Cultural conventions also dictate that women are closer to nature and that motherhood is a “natural” and expected outcome in a woman’s life. While Meridian is close to nature, she has no interest in motherhood. This duality in her …

Ecofeminism And Natural Disasters: Sri Lankan Women Post-Tsunami, Alyssa Banford, Cameron Kiely Froude Jan 2015

Ecofeminism And Natural Disasters: Sri Lankan Women Post-Tsunami, Alyssa Banford, Cameron Kiely Froude

Journal of International Women's Studies

Women experience a host of negative consequences during and after a natural disaster. A variety of feminist theories have been used to explore this phenomenon. The aim of this paper is to posit the need for an ecofeminist perspective on analyzing women’s vulnerabilities post-natural disaster. The authors will discuss the history and branches of ecofeminism, highlighting their utility in exploring the intersection of race, class, and gender in the aftermath of disaster. An ecofeminist analysis of Sri Lankan women’s vulnerability in the wake of the 2004 tsunami will be used to illustrate the utility of the theory. Implications of using …

Gender Mainstreaming In Sector Budget Support: The Case Of The European Commission's Sector Support To Rwanda's Agriculture Sector, Nathalie Holvoet, Liesbeth Inberg

Journal of International Women's Studies

Donors face difficulties when handling gender concerns in the context of ongoing changes in aid modalities. Against this background, the European Union (EU) Member States and the European Commission (EC) adopted the EU Plan of Action on Gender Equality and Women’s Empowerment in Development (2010-2015) and launched, in collaboration with the UN Women and the International Training Center of the International Labour Organisation, the ‘Increasing Accountability in Financing for Gender Equality’ programme. Within the framework of this programme, the EU delegation in Rwanda has elaborated a Gender Mainstreaming Strategy for the EC sector budget support to the Agriculture Sector in …

Leveraging Predictive Policing Algorithms To Restore Fourth Amendment Protections In High-Crime Areas In A Post-Wardlow World, Kelly K. Koss Jan 2015

Leveraging Predictive Policing Algorithms To Restore Fourth Amendment Protections In High-Crime Areas In A Post-Wardlow World, Kelly K. Koss

Chicago-Kent Law Review

Rapid technological changes have led to an explosion in Big Data collection and analysis through complex computerized algorithms. Law enforcement has not been immune to these technological developments. Many local police departments are now using highly advanced predictive policing technologies to predict when and where crime will occur in their communities, and to allocate crime-fighting resources based on these predictions.

Although predictive policing technology has an array of the potential uses, the scope of this Note is limited to addressing how the statistical outputs from these technologies can be used to restore eroded Fourth Amendment rights in alleged high-crime areas. …

The Theory Of Travel Decision-Making: A Conceptual Framework Of Active Travel Behavior, Patrick Allen Singleton Jan 2015

The Theory Of Travel Decision-Making: A Conceptual Framework Of Active Travel Behavior, Patrick Allen Singleton

PSU Transportation Seminars

We present a unifying conceptual framework of active travel behavior called the theory of travel decision-making. It integrates seminal travel-related concepts from economics, geography, and psychology with active travel behavior theories and empirical research. The framework abstracts an individual’s thought process around short-term travel decisions and explains the roles of activities, built environment factors, socio-demographics, attitudes and perceptions, and habit. Our primary objective is to inform travel behavior research by meeting the need for a theoretical framework capable of guiding studies on active transportation. The framework could also support active transportation planning and analysis methods by informing the development of …

Installations Of Jewish Law In Public Urban Space: An American Eruv Controversy, Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert Jan 2015

Installations Of Jewish Law In Public Urban Space: An American Eruv Controversy, Charlotte Elisheva Fonrobert

Chicago-Kent Law Review

This article analyzes the ongoing controversy over the installation of an eruv in Westhampton Beach. The author first provides an analytical description of the case with reference to other recent eruv controversies. Similar to arguments advanced in earlier eruv controversies, lawyers in the Westhampton case have taken recourse to the First Amendment, with proponents of the eruv relying on the free exercise clause, and opponents relying on the establishment clause. The article then proceeds to discuss the implications of this controversy for the larger issues of religion in the public sphere, as one of the critical issues emerging in all …

Towards A Collective Spatial Form:An Analysis Of Achill’S Deserted Village, Noel Brady

Conference papers

This paper examines an earlier study by Bob Kingston and along with onsite observations develops an environmental theory behind the particular siting and location of the deserted village in Achill, Ireland. The paper relies on the survey conducted by Kingston in the first instance but then by translating the material into a different format has concluded on statistically significant evidence of willful and careful planning and design in the construction of the houses.

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan Jan 2015

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

In an attempt to identify a Quaker aesthetic as it applies to English meeting houses, this article draws upon the physical evidence of English Meetings past and present, upon the records of discussions preceding the design and construction of meeting houses, upon interviews with Friends at some thirty meeting houses and upon the observational and interpretative literature. The main part of the discussion is structured around the moral principles of plainness, worthiness and simplicity. A distinction is made between the effect of plainness, which has in the past been regulated, and simplicity, which is here explored as a moral attribute …

An Assessment Of Health Insurance Features As Predictors Of Colorectal Cancer Screening, Alex L. Woersching Jan 2015

An Assessment Of Health Insurance Features As Predictors Of Colorectal Cancer Screening, Alex L. Woersching

Pharmaceutical Sciences ETDs

Health insurance design influences whether a person will receive health services, including colorectal cancer (CRC) screening, although how insurance design influences utilization is not fully explained. By disaggregating types of insurance into discrete organizational and financial features, specific influential factors may be identifiable. This study evaluated insurance features as predictors of CRC screening using data from the 2009, 2010, and 2011 Medical Expenditure Panel Survey. Studied insurance features included three organizational features: whether a persons insurance defined a provider network (DPN), used gatekeeping, and restricted coverage to a DPN; and two financial features: whether a person had a Flexible Spending …
