Connecting Gender, Race, Class, And Immigration Status To Disease Management, Marie-Anne S. Rosemberg Phd, Mn, Rn, Jenny Hsin-Chun Tsai Phd, Arnp, Pmhcns-Bc

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

Objective: Chronic diseases are the leading causes of death in the United States. Chronic disease management occurs within all aspects of an individual’s life, including the workplace. Though the social constructs of gender, race, class, and immigration status within the workplace have been considered, their connection to disease management among workers has been less explicitly explored. Using a sample of immigrant hotel housekeepers, we explored the connections between these four social constructs and hypertension management.

Methods: This qualitative research study was guided by critical ethnography methodology. Twenty-seven hotel room cleaners and four housemen were recruited (N = 31) and …

En-Listing Life: Red Is The Color Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman Jan 2015

En-Listing Life: Red Is The Color Of Threatened Species Lists, Irus Braverman

Contributions to Books

Published as Chapter 11 in Critical Animal Geographies: Politics, Intersections and Heirarchies in a Multispecies World, Kathryn Gillespie & Rosemary-Claire Collard, eds.

The idea that every species should be assessed, ranked, and listed according to its projected risk of extinction is now a commonly accepted practice in conservation. Threatened species lists rank species in a linear progression from the least to the most endangered. This chapter explores the biopolitical nature of such lists. It shows how listing threatened species becomes a way to affirm — and justify — that life which is more and most important to save. The chapter …

Bicyclic Naphthenic Acids In Oil Sands Process Water: Identification By Comprehensive Multidimensional Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry., Michael J. Wilde, Charles E. West, Alan G. Scarlett, David Jones, Richard A. Frank, L. Mark Hewitt, Steven J. Rowland

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Although bicyclic acids have been reported to be the major naphthenic acids in oil sands process-affected water (OSPW) and a well-accepted screening assay indicated that some bicyclics were the most acutely toxic acids tested, none have yet been identified. Here we show by comprehensive multidimensional gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC×GC-MS), that >100 C8-15 bicyclic acids are typically present in OSPW. Synthesis or purchase allowed us to establish the GC×GC retention times of methyl esters of numerous of these and the mass spectra and published spectra of some additional types, allowed us to identify bicyclo[2.2.1]heptane, bicyclo[3.2.1]octane, bicyclo[4.3.0]nonane, bicyclo[3.3.1]nonane and bicyclo[4.4.0]decane acids in …

Modelling The Transfer Of Supraglacial Meltwater To The Bed Of Leverett Glacier, Southwest Greenland, Cc Clason, Dwf Mair, Pw Nienow, Id Bartholomew, Et Al Jan 2015

Modelling The Transfer Of Supraglacial Meltwater To The Bed Of Leverett Glacier, Southwest Greenland, Cc Clason, Dwf Mair, Pw Nienow, Id Bartholomew, Et Al

School of Geography, Earth and Environmental Sciences

Meltwater delivered to the bed of the Greenland Ice Sheet is a driver of variable ice-motion through changes in effective pressure and enhanced basal lubrication. Ice surface velocities have been shown to respond rapidly both to meltwater production at the surface and to drainage of supraglacial lakes, suggesting efficient transfer of meltwater from the supraglacial to subglacial hydrological systems. Although considerable effort is currently being directed towards improved modelling of the controlling surface and basal processes, modelling the temporal and spatial evolution of the transfer of melt to the bed has received less attention. Here we present the results of …

Wizards At Making A Virtue Of Necessity': Street Vendors In India, Abhayraj Naik Jan 2015

Wizards At Making A Virtue Of Necessity': Street Vendors In India, Abhayraj Naik

Socio-Legal Review

Street vending is ambivalent in India’s imagination of law, space, and self. This essay attempts to excavate street vending in India as an interstice: an enquiry directed towards how street vending is entangled with specific theoretical and ideological positions concerning culture, citizenship, commodification, consumption, globalization, legality, modernity, neoliberalism, poverty, politics, public space, and social movements. The focus of my excavation of interstitial street vending in India is twofold. First, a methodological front-staging of the interconnections between law, space and time in India. Second, an acknowledgment of the importance of revisionist accounts of Indian modernity; accounts that note emergent politics of …
