Selecting Words For Instruction During Primary Read-Alouds, Karen J. Kindle Aug 2015

Selecting Words For Instruction During Primary Read-Alouds, Karen J. Kindle

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

Reading aloud is a wide-spread practice in early childhood and primary classrooms that is purported to develop a range of literacy skills, including vocabulary. Since it is not feasible to teach all of the words in a given text, efforts to maximize the instructional power of read-aloud events have included research regarding word selection. This study explores the extent to which research-based practices for selecting words for instruction have been incorporated into the practices of four primary grade teachers. Findings indicate that teachers may rely more on intuition and personal experience to select words rather than following expert’s recommendations. Implications …

Social Justice And Technocracy: Tracing The Narratives Of Inclusive Education In The United States, Scot Danforth Aug 2015

Social Justice And Technocracy: Tracing The Narratives Of Inclusive Education In The United States, Scot Danforth

Education Faculty Articles and Research

Over the past two decades, the percentage of American students with disabilities educated in general classrooms with their nondisabled peers has risen by approximately fifty percent. This gradual but steady policy shift has been driven by two distinct narratives of organisational change. The social justice narrative espouses principles of equality and caring across human differences. The narrative of technocracy creates top-down, administrative pressure through hierarchical systems based on quantitative performance data. This article examines these two primary policy narratives of inclusive education in the United States, exploring the conceptual features of each and initiating an analysis of their application in …

Theses and Dissertations

Pfiesteria piscicida and P. shumwayae are toxic dinoflagellates implicated in massive fish kills in North Carolina and Maryland during 1990s. A set of physical, chemica l, and biological factors influence population dynamics of these organisms. This study employs i nformation gathered from relevant literature on temperature, salinity, dissolved oxygen, pH, turbulent mixing, and dissolved nutrients, bacteria, algae, microzooplankton, mesozooplankton, bivalve m ollusks, finfish, and other toxic dinoflagellates, which influence Pfiesteria population dynamics. The research focused on whether conditions in the Great South Bay, Long Island, New York were suitable to blooms of Pfiesteria species prior to the passage of superstorm …

Application Of Β-Lactamase Reporter Fusions As An Indicator Of Effector Protein Secretion During Infections With The Obligate Intracellular Pathogen Chlamydia Trachomatis , Konrad E. Mueller, Kenneth A. Fields Aug 2015

Application Of Β-Lactamase Reporter Fusions As An Indicator Of Effector Protein Secretion During Infections With The Obligate Intracellular Pathogen Chlamydia Trachomatis , Konrad E. Mueller, Kenneth A. Fields

Microbiology, Immunology, and Molecular Genetics Faculty Publications

Chlamydia spp. utilize multiple secretion systems, including the type III secretion system (T3SS), to deploy host-interactive effector proteins into infected host cells. Elucidation of secreted proteins has traditionally required ectopic expression in a surrogate T3SS followed by immunolocalization of endogenous candidate effectors to confirm secretion by chlamydiae. The ability to transform Chlamydia and achieve stable expression of recombinant gene products has enabled a more direct assessment of secretion. We adapted TEM-1 β-lactamase as a reporter system for assessment of chlamydial protein secretion. We provide evidence that this system facilitates visualization of secretion in the context of infection. Specifically, our findings …

Subglacial Discharge At Tidewater Glaciers Revealed By Seismic Tremor, Timothy C. Bartholomaus, Jason M. Amundson, Jacob I. Walter, Shad O'Neel, Michael E. West, Christopher F. Larsen

Faculty, Staff, and Students

Subglacial discharge influences glacier basal motion and erodes and redeposits sediment. At tidewater glacier termini, discharge drives submarine terminus melting, affects fjord circulation, and is a central component of proglacial marine ecosystems. However, our present inability to track subglacial discharge and its variability significantly hinders our understanding of these processes. Here we report observations of hourly to seasonal variations in 1.5–10 Hz seismic tremor that strongly correlate with subglacial discharge but not with basal motion, weather, or discrete icequakes. Our data demonstrate that vigorous discharge occurs from tidewater glaciers during summer, in spite of fast basal motion that could limit …

Ever since its official endorsement by the American Statistical Association in 2005, the Guidelines for Assessment and Instruction in Statistics Education (GAISE) College Report has had a profound impact on the teaching of statistics. Now, a decade later, it is important to recognize the changing nature in what and how we teach our introductory statistics students. Changes in technology and assessment practices, just over the past 10 years, have made it possible to do new and exciting things in our courses, in very different ways than were envisioned by the authors of the original GAISE College Report. Further, our world …

Rotavirus (RV) infections cause severe diarrhea in infants and young children worldwide. Vaccines are available but cost prohibitive for many countries and only reduce severe symptoms. Vaccinated infants continue to shed infectious particles, and studies show decreased efficacy of the RV vaccines in tropical and subtropical countries where they are needed most. Continuing surveillance for new RV strains, assessment of vaccine efficacy, and development of cost effective antiviral drugs remain an important aspect of RV studies. This study was to determine the efficacy of antioxidant and anti-inflammatory stilbenoids to inhibit RV replication. Peanut (A. hypogaea) hairy root cultures were induced …

Subgoals, Context, And Worked Examples In Learning Computing Problem Solving, Briana B. Morrison, Lauren E. Margulieux, Mark Guzdial

Computer Science Faculty Proceedings & Presentations

Recent empirical results suggest that the instructional material used to teach computing may actually overload students' cognitive abilities. Better designed materials may enhance learning by reducing unnecessary load. Subgoal labels have been shown to be effective at reducing the cognitive load during problem solving in both mathematics and science. Until now, subgoal labels have been given to students to learn passively. We report on a study to determine if giving learners subgoal labels is more or less effective than asking learners to generate subgoal labels within an introductory CS programming task. The answers are mixed and depend on other features …

Role Of Astrocytes In Ischemic Preconditioning-Induced Neuroprotection, Srinivasan Narayanan Aug 2015

Role Of Astrocytes In Ischemic Preconditioning-Induced Neuroprotection, Srinivasan Narayanan

Open Access Dissertations

Cerebral ischemia, most notably in the form of stroke, is a leading cause of morbidity and mortality resulting in long-term disability in the United States (U.S.). Investigating therapies that could be preemptively administered to individuals with a risk factor for stroke could improve prognosis following this devastating condition. One such prophylactic therapy could be represented by ischemic preconditioning (IPC). IPC is the intrinsic neuroprotective response from a brief sub-lethal ischemic event which increases the tolerance towards a future lethal ischemic event. However, previous preconditioning studies in the brain have been studied mainly from the perspective of neurons; as a result, …

Does The Microbiota Play A Role In The Pathogenesis Of Autoimmune Diseases?, Mairi H. Mclean, Dario Dieguez, Lindsey M. Miller, Howard A. Young

United States Public Health Resources

The microbiota of the human metaorganism is not a mere bystander. These microbes have coevolved with us and are pivotal to normal development and homoeostasis. Dysbiosis of the GI microbiota is associated with many disease susceptibilities, including obesity, malignancy, liver disease and GI pathology such as IBD. It is clear that there is direct and indirect crosstalk between this microbial community and host immune response. However, the precise mechanism of this microbial influence in disease pathogenesis remains elusive and is now a major research focus. There is emerging literature on the role of the microbiota in the pathogenesis of autoimmune …

A Look At A Strict Construction Of Section 2-207 Of The Uniform Commercial Code From The Seller's Point Of View Or What's So Bad About Roto-Lith?, Thomas E. Liggett

Akron Law Review

This is an examination of the workings of section 2-207 of the Uniform Commercial Code in the form contract between merchants. More specifically, the literal interpretation of the Section is to be investigated as to its effect on the practical formation of the sales contract A basic assumption of this comment is that the terms of the Code which may, under section 2-207 be "read into" a contract, are repugnant to the seller. This, I think, is obvious. It should, however, be kept in mind that, between merchants, both parties may be assumed to be "big boys." Therefore, the problem …

Managing Recreational Rivers, Ben A. Rich

Akron Law Review

This paper will discuss various approaches that have 'been or could be taken by government agencies in order to provide and protect rivers with recreational potential for use as public recreational facilities, in particular boating and canoeing, and consider them in the context of the state of Illinois, which has been faced with a tremendous increase in pressure for water based recreational facilities and anachronistic case and statute law of water and related land resources.

The fundamental issue in any situation involving use by the public of natural watercourses concerns the concept of navigability. Crucial and divergent sets of conclusions …

Rho Gtpases And Neuron Morphology: Bridging The Gap With Fret Imaging, Nima Sharifai

Open Access Dissertations

Obtaining high-resolution information from a complex network while maintaining its natural context is a key challenge in biology. This is especially true of molecular networks, largely governed by protein-protein interactions, which underlie life’s dynamic processes. Despite the invaluable information they have provided, genetic interaction screens and biochemical assays lack either evidence of direct protein association or an intact endogenous environment, respectively. As a result, the static interaction maps we currently possess do not reveal when and where interactions take place within a living system, limiting our ability to recreate or control processes at the cellular level. Using optically transparent Drosophila …

The Stress Of Adolescence: The Impact Of Self-Perceived Body Development On Adult Health, Isabelle Christine Beulaygue Aug 2015

The Stress Of Adolescence: The Impact Of Self-Perceived Body Development On Adult Health, Isabelle Christine Beulaygue

Open Access Dissertations

Extant research indicates that early and mid adolescence are times of notable pubertal changes, which are accompanied by rapid physical, cognitive, and social transitions. For young women, these changes are particularly stressful. The female body changes extensively and is subject to societal ideals of beauty, thinness, and objectification. The current dissertation offers a novel bio-psycho-social perspective to the study of adolescent self-perceived development. Utilizing data from Waves, I III, and IV of Add Health, I constructed a composite index of self-perceived body development during adolescence and examined its impact on four health outcomes. After running several regression models, and testing …
