Hedgehog Signaling In Cancer, Jun Long
Hedgehog Signaling In Cancer, Jun Long
Open Access Dissertations
Two major biological questions regarding Hedgehog (HH) signaling were investigated in this dissertation. The first important question is the role of lipid modification in HH ligand function, while the second one is epigenetic regulation in HH-driven cancer. In the second chapter, identification of lipid modifications in HH ligands from different contexts and pertinent functional studies were performed to elaborate the role of lipids in regulating the biological properties of HH. This is the first description of heterogeneous fatty acylation in a fully processed form of HH ligand, and shows that such a profile of lipidation is dynamic in different cellular …

This work addresses the threats of nitrogen loading to coral reefs and encompasses many unanswered questions on the topic of dissolved inorganic (DIN) utilization by Scleractinian corals and their endosymbiotic algae. Experimental efforts were made to understand the conditions under which NO3- or NH4+ leads to declines in calcification and identify other physiological changes in the coral-algal symbiosis which may accompany such growth declines. The synergistic influences of NH4+ and CO2 were investigated in order to gain insight on the potential influences of elevated DIN on corals in a high CO2 world. The study of NO3- and NH4+ uptake and …

Osteonecrosis is one of the most common, serious, toxicities resulting from the treatment of acute lymphoblastic leukemia. In recent years, pediatric acute lymphoblastic leukemia clinical trials have used discontinuous rather than continuous dosing of dexamethasone in an effort to reduce the incidence of osteonecrosis. However, it is not known whether discontinuous dosing would compromise antileukemic efficacy of glucocorticoids. Therefore, we tested the efficacy of discontinuous dexamethasone against continuous dexamethasone in murine models bearing human acute lymphoblastic leukemia xenografts (n = 8 patient samples) or murine BCR-ABL+ acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Plasma dexamethasone concentrations (7.9 to 212 nM) were similar to those …

Publications and Research
Bdellovibrio spp. and Micavibrio spp. are Gram-negative predators that feed on other Gram-negative bacteria, making predatory bacteria potential alternatives to antibiotics for treating multi-drug resistant infections. While the ability of predatory bacteria to control bacterial infections in vitro is well documented, the in vivo effect of predators on a living host has yet to be extensively examined. In this study, respiratory and intravenous inoculations were used to determine the effects of predatory bacteria in mice. We found no reduction in mouse viability after intranasal or intravenous inoculation of B. bacteriovorus 109J, HD100 or M. aeruginosavorus. Introducing predators into the respiratory …
Simulating And Animating The Spatial Dynamics Of Interacting Species Living On A Torus, Boyan Kostadinov
Simulating And Animating The Spatial Dynamics Of Interacting Species Living On A Torus, Boyan Kostadinov
Publications and Research
The goal of this talk is to present a student research project in computational population biology, which aims at creating a computer simulation and animation of the spatial dynamics of interactions between two kinds of species living on a torus-shaped universe. The habitat for spatial interactions is modeled by a 2D lattice with periodic boundary conditions, which wrap the rectangular grid into a torus. The spatial interactions between the species have two components: 1. Population dynamics modeled by the classical Nicholson-Bailey two-parameter family of models for coupled interactions between species, extended to incorporate space and 2. Two-parameter migration dynamics, modeled …

The α-chemokine stromal-derived factor 1 (SDF-1), which binds to the CXCR4 receptor, directs migration and homing of CXCR4+ hematopoietic stem/progenitor cells (HSPCs) to bone marrow (BM) stem cell niches. Nevertheless, it is also known that CXCR4-/- fetal liver-derived hematopoietic stem cells engraft into BM and that blockade of CXCR4 by its antagonist AMD3100 does not prevent engraftment of HSPCs. Because of this finding of SDF-1-CXCR4-independent BM homing, the unique role of SDF-1 in HSPC homing has recently been challenged. While SDF-1 is the only chemokine that chemoattracts HSPCs, other chemoattractants for these cells have recently been described, including …
Comparing Uncivil Discourse With A Conversational Intelligent Agent In Public And Private Online Settings, Mark Marcello
Comparing Uncivil Discourse With A Conversational Intelligent Agent In Public And Private Online Settings, Mark Marcello
Theses
According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center, 60% of participants of a survey said they have witnessed online abuse, and 66% of that abuse occurred via social media. This study looks at online communication, and tests if anonymity increases the amount of abuse that occurs during online communication. A quasi-experiment was developed to look for uncivil discourse using a conversational intelligent agent to create a controlled, repeatable conversational environment. The interactions with the agent occur in two settings: one in public at a kiosk, and a second in private. The researcher hypothesized that the interactions that occur …
Integrating Human Culture, Community, And Sense Of Place Into An Existing High School Environmental Studies Curriculum, Kathy Allen Kline
Integrating Human Culture, Community, And Sense Of Place Into An Existing High School Environmental Studies Curriculum, Kathy Allen Kline
School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations
This capstone addresses challenges faced by a first year high school teacher on an interdisciplinary team integrating social studies into an environmental studies curriculum. After exploring literature in biodiversity, biocultural diversity, and place-based education, the author determines that the existing curriculum can be enhanced to make stronger connections between people and the places already being studied, including the local community. To that end, this paper presents a sub-unit, developed using the Understanding by Design ® model, that seeks to integrate human culture, community, and sense of place into an environmental studies curriculum. The sub-unit includes six weeks of lessons to …

To support management decisions, molecular characterization of data and geo-reference of incidence records of Tuta absoluta (Meyrick) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) were combined with data on the biology and ecology of the pest to estimate its climatic suitability and potential spread at regional and global scale. A CLIMEX model was developed and used for the global prediction of current and future climate-induced changes in the distributional shifts of T. absoluta. Results revealed that temperature and moisture characterized T. absoluta population growth while the pest ability to survive the cold, hot, wet and dry stress conditions are the primary characteristics defining its range …

Adopting Agile Practices When Developing Medical Device Software, Martin Mchugh, Fergal Mccaffery, Garret Coady
Articles
Agile methods are gaining momentum amongst the developers of non-safety critical software. They offer the ability to improve development time, increase quality and reduce development costs. Despite this, the rate of adoption of agile methods within safety critical domains remains low. On face value agile methods appear to be contradictory to regulatory requirements. However while they may appear contradictory, they align on key values such as the development of the highest quality software. To demonstrate that agile methods could in fact be adopted when developing regulatory compliant software they were implemented on a medical device software development project. This implementation …

Some human parasites originated in prehominid ancestors in Africa. Nematode species, such as Enterobius vermicularis (pinworm), hookworms and Trichuris trichiura are shared by humans and other close phylogenetic primates (Pan and Gorilla), showing that they infected a common ancestor to this group. When humans migrated from Africa to other continents they carried these parasites wherever climate conditions allowed parasite transmission from host to host. Other parasites, however, were acquired throughout human biological and social evolutive history when new territories were occupied. Paleoparasitology data is a valuable source to recover emergence and disappearance of parasite infections through analysis of archaeological remains. …

Diet And Parasitism At Dust Devil Cave, Karl J. Reinhard, J Richard Ambler, Magdalene Mcguffie
Karl Reinhard Publications
Human parasitism has obvious relationships to group size and composition, mobility, subsistence patterns, and rates of culture change. At their best, human endoparasites may be annoying; at their worst, some can cause death. Thus, an overall view of the parasite load of a prehistoric population can yield insights useful in interpreting past lifeways. With these thoughts in mind, we undertook a study of Desha Complex (6800-4800 B .C.) human feces recovered from Dust Devil Cave in southern Utah.

The adoption of Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) has become a general trend in virtually all professions including the academia. Professionals in the academia are adopting ICTs with a view of offering the services that they have traditionally provided without these technologies so as to attain their strategic academic objectives. Since 2004, the Makerere University has taken up ICTs as a strategic enabler to fulfill the Makerere University’s strategic objectives (Makerere University, 2014). One of the key features of this movement was the adoption of Internet in academic and administrative work of the University. It should be noted that Internet …
The Role Of Arabidopsis Aminoalcoholphosphotransferase 1 And 2 In Plant Development And Oil Production And Transcriptional Regulation Of Seed Oil Accumulation By Glabra2, Yu Liu
Dissertations
Vegetable oils are important commodities as human foods, animal feeds, renewable industrial feedstocks, and biofuels. Many biochemical and regulation events are involved in seed oil formation, including phospholipids metabolism and transcriptional regulation. In this work, I investigated 1) the role of aminoalcoholphosphotransferases (AAPTs) in phospholipid synthesis and plant development, 2) the effects of AAPTs on seed storage lipid production in Arabidopsis and the emerging oil crop Camelina, and 3) the interaction of the lipid mediator phosphatidic acid (PA) with GLABRA2 (GL2), a negative regulator in seed oil production. AAPTs are the enzymes that produce phosphatidylcholine (PC) and phosphatidylethanolamine (PE). The …

Social Network Community Detection, Guang Ouyang
Doctoral Dissertations
This dissertation has its main focus on the development of social network community detection algorithms. Real world social networks are usually found to divide naturally into small communities. In the big data age, effective and scalable algorithms detecting network community structures are in demand in a wide range of business applications, such as marketing segmentation, friend recommendation in online social networks, and product recommendation for online retailers such as Amazon. We aim to leverage the power of statistical inference over uncertainty to scalable community detection algorithms. We developed three novel community detection algorithms: the first is a statistical model-based clustering …
