Interactive Pavillions: Responsive Transformation Of Structure Systems, Xiangru Chen Nov 2015

Interactive Pavillions: Responsive Transformation Of Structure Systems, Xiangru Chen

Architecture Thesis Prep

With the personal interest in tectonic design and kinetic structure arts. This study is aimed to explore the application of interactive technology in the transformation of the structure system in a tectonic architecture design--- to cross the gap between static tectonic design and kinetic structure in small scale. The responsive pavilion will sense and respond to the verification of gravity loads (for occupancy detection) and lights (for solar energy), with the spatial transformation of the entire structure system. As a result, the form of the architecture will follow the function. The responsive pavilion will spatially respond to the varied occupancy …

Carcinogenic Liver Fluke Secretes Extracellular Vesicles That Promote Cholangiocytes To Adopt A Tumorigenic Phenotype, Sujittra Chaidayet, Javier Sotillo, Michael Smout, Cinzia Cantacessi, Malcolm Jones, Paul J. Brindley, Jeffrey M. Bethony, +9 Additional Authors

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Background. Throughout Asia there is an unprecedented link between cholangiocarcinoma and infection with the liver fluke Opisthorchis viverrini. Multiple processes including chronic inflammation and secretion of parasite proteins into the biliary epithelium drive infection towards cancer. Until now, the mechanism and effects of parasite protein entry into cholangiocytes was unknown.

Methods. Various microscopy techniques were used to identify O. viverrini extracellular vesicles (EVs) and their internalization by human cholangiocytes. Using mass spectrometry we characterised the EV proteome and associated changes in cholangiocytes after EV uptake, and detected EV proteins in bile of infected hamsters and humans. Cholangiocyte proliferation and …

Evaluation Of Cytosine Dna Methylation Of The Biomphalaria Glabratahe At Shock Protein 70 Locus After Biological And Physiological Stresses, Wannaporn Ittiprasert, Andre Miller, Matty Knight, Matt Tucker, Michael H. Hsieh Nov 2015

Evaluation Of Cytosine Dna Methylation Of The Biomphalaria Glabratahe At Shock Protein 70 Locus After Biological And Physiological Stresses, Wannaporn Ittiprasert, Andre Miller, Matty Knight, Matt Tucker, Michael H. Hsieh

Microbiology, Immunology, and Tropical Medicine Faculty Publications

Deoxyribonucleic (DNA) methylation is one of the widespread epigenetic modifications of genomic DNA, and has been postulated to be a predisposing influence on disease onset and infections. The ability to quantify differences in DNA methylation between the genomes of normal vs.stressed Biomphalaria glabrata would help to profile changes potentially linked to resistance to Schistosoma mansoni infection. Thus, this study sought to measure differences in cytosine DNA methylation of various B. glabrata tissues responding over time to either biological or physiological stresses (S. mansoni exposure vs. heat shock). Here, this study measured DNA methylation at the B. glabrataheat …

Predicting Toucan Locations In Panama Using Arcgis, Daniel J. Herrera Nov 2015

Predicting Toucan Locations In Panama Using Arcgis, Daniel J. Herrera

Geography: Student Scholarship & Creative Works

Toucans are omnivorous birds native to southern Latin America and South America. They are non-migratory, and their range is disputed among experts. In an attempt to develop a better understanding of the range and behavior of toucans, correlations between toucan presence and geographic features of the area were analyzed to create a location probability map.

The Transcriptomic And Evolutionary Signature Of Social Interactions Regulating Honey Bee Caste Development, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Brian R. Johnson, Brock Harpur, Clement Kent, Amro Zayed, Kirk E. Anderson, Timothy A. Linksvayer Nov 2015

The Transcriptomic And Evolutionary Signature Of Social Interactions Regulating Honey Bee Caste Development, Svjetlana Vojvodic, Brian R. Johnson, Brock Harpur, Clement Kent, Amro Zayed, Kirk E. Anderson, Timothy A. Linksvayer

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

The caste fate of developing female honey bee larvae is strictly socially regulated by adult nurse workers. As a result of this social regulation, nurse-expressed genes as well as larval-expressed genes may affect caste expression and evolution. We used a novel transcriptomic approach to identify genes with putative direct and indirect effects on honey bee caste development, and we subsequently studied the relative rates of molecular evolution at these caste-associated genes. We experimentally induced the production of new queens by removing the current colony queen, and we used RNA sequencing to study the gene expression profiles of both developing larvae …

An Assessment Of Food Safety Handling Practices At Farmers' Markets In Rhode Island Using A Smartphone Application, Elizabeth G. Vandeputte, Lori F. Pivarnik, Joshua Scheinberg, Robson Machado, Catherine N. Cutter, Ingrid E. Lofgren Nov 2015

An Assessment Of Food Safety Handling Practices At Farmers' Markets In Rhode Island Using A Smartphone Application, Elizabeth G. Vandeputte, Lori F. Pivarnik, Joshua Scheinberg, Robson Machado, Catherine N. Cutter, Ingrid E. Lofgren

Nutrition Faculty Publications

The number of foodborne illness outbreaks increased in the US from 2001 to 2010, and 17% of them were associated with produce. Higher risk, whole produce sold at farmers' markets presents unique challenges to food safety practices in regard to temperature controls, potable water, and exposure to contaminants. The purpose of this study is to use direct observations to identify unsafe food handling practices among vendors selling higher risk produce at Rhode Island farmers' markets. This study used, as a tool for data acquisition, a Smartphone application developed to allow concealed direct observations of actual vendors' practices at farmers' markets. …

The Oedipus Hex: Regulating Family After Marriage Equality, Courtney Megan Cahill Nov 2015

The Oedipus Hex: Regulating Family After Marriage Equality, Courtney Megan Cahill

Scholarly Publications

Now that national marriage equality for same-sex couples has become the law of the land, commentators are turning their attention from the relationships into which some gays and lesbians enter to the mechanisms on which they — and many others — rely in order to reproduce. Even as one culture war makes way for another, however, there is something that binds them: a desire to establish the family. This Article focuses on a problematic manifestation of that desire: the incest prevention justification. The incest prevention justification posits that the law ought to regulate alternative reproduction in order to minimize the …

Contrails: Causal Inference Using Propensity Scores, Dean S. Barron Nov 2015

Contrails: Causal Inference Using Propensity Scores, Dean S. Barron

Journal of Modern Applied Statistical Methods

Contrails are clouds caused by airplane exhausts, which geologists contend decrease daily temperature ranges on Earth. Following the 2001 World Trade Center attack, cancelled domestic flights triggered the first absence of contrails in decades. Resultant exceptional data capacitated causal inference analysis by propensity score matching. Estimated contrail effect was 6.8981°F.

In this issue, two USF Gleeson Library/Geschke Center librarians, Zheng (Jessica) Lu, Digital Collections Librarian, and Vicki Rosen, Distance Learning Services Librarian, describe creating Practicing Ignatian Pedagogy: A Digital Collection of Resources, an openly accessible database available through the USF Library website, using the FLC resources …

Is Political Evolution Over? An Anthropological Analysis Of The Twentieth Century, Robert Bates Graber Ph.D. Nov 2015

Is Political Evolution Over? An Anthropological Analysis Of The Twentieth Century, Robert Bates Graber Ph.D.

Journal of International and Global Studies

Why did human societies grow from small bands and villages into highly populous nations and empires? This process, termed political evolution, is explained by one major strand of anthropological theorizing as having resulted from population pressure, warfare, and conquest. War is seen as having been essential because polities do not willingly surrender autonomy. The 20th century apparently brought both an increase in population pressure (the ratio of humans to the available resource base) and a considerable amount of war, but only a modest increase in political evolution as measured by the average population of nations. One interpretation of this is …

"Casting Aside That Ficticious Self.": Deciphering Female Identity In The Awakening 2015, Anne L. Dicosimo

Master's Theses

Kate Chopin’s female protagonists have long since fascinated literary critics, raising serious questions concerning the influence of nineteenth-century female gender roles in her writing. Published in 1899, The Awakening demonstrates the changeability of the various representations of woman. In the nineteenth century, the subject of women may be divided into two categories: the True Woman and the New Woman. The former were expected to “cherish and maintain the four cardinal virtues of piety, purity, submissiveness and domesticity” (Khoshnood et al.), while the latter sought to move away from hearth and home in order to focus on education, professions, and political …
