Deconstructing Dominant Discourse Using Self-Deprecating Humor: A Discourse Analysis Of A Consulting With Japanese Female About Hikikomori And Neet, Hatsuho Ayashiro
Deconstructing Dominant Discourse Using Self-Deprecating Humor: A Discourse Analysis Of A Consulting With Japanese Female About Hikikomori And Neet, Hatsuho Ayashiro
Journal of Critical Issues in Educational Practice
This study examines how dominant discourses are deconstructed in a consulting, particularly focusing on self-deprecating humor. Data were collected from a session with a Japanese client whose son was in hikikomori or NEET state, and a transcript of the session was analyzed using positioning theory. Examining several extracts shows how the client’s positioning of her son and herself is influenced by some dominant discourses, such as deficit discourse and so on. These dominant discourses are deconstructed by self-deprecating humor, because such ironical self-positioning makes these discourses visible, and defeats the self made by society. We discuss the findings with the …
Issues And Challenges Of Adapting A Creative Work, Joshua Q. Axe
Issues And Challenges Of Adapting A Creative Work, Joshua Q. Axe
University Honors Program
This paper presents an overview of the process of adapting a creative work (i.e., books, films, works of art, etc.) focusing on the unique issues and challenges of bringing two distinctive types of media and persons from different disciplines together to create a successful adaptation. While the nature of adaptation is change, the process to accomplish that transition is complex. This research discusses the media involved, some of the key people involved in the process (and their expectations of the end product), and other factors upon which the success or failure of an adaptation depends. Three main areas examined include …

A Culture Of Universal Empathy In Design At The Institute Of Technology Carlow, Hilary Dempsey, P.J. White
Theme 3: Innovating in Product and Service Design
This paper discusses the development of a culture of ‘Universal Empathy’ within Product Design programmes at the Institute of Technology Carlow. The concept draws from the inclusive, holistic nature of Universal Design and its principles together with a deeply human centric and empathic approach to design learning. Focusing on the undergraduate programmes of Industrial Design and Product Design Innovation, it will offer frameworks, case studies and examples of how this culture and ethos is developing. Universal empathy transcends four years of the undergraduate programmes and it compliments traditional design skills such as sketching, prototyping and technical detailing. It relies on …

Data Analysis Of Medical Records In Veterinary Hospital Using Clustering Method And Association Rule, Tsung-Chih Hsiao, Shu-Ling Shieh, Tzer-Long Chen, Chia-Hui Liu, Ying-Chi Yeh
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Since pets have been promoted from working livestock to family companions, pet industry is also progressing with the development of nowadays? society. To reduce the negligence of the diagnostic process, the correlations between the symptoms and treatments of sick pets are collected. Medical records of a veterinary hospital are used as the input dataset. The clustering algorithms and association rules use two methods to investigate the practice. The result indicates that urology, dermatology or internal medicines are highly correlated with possible symptoms. The conclusion could assist doctors to find the association rules between diseases and symptoms of pets. In this …

BACKGROUND: Infantile spasms (IS) is a devastating epileptic encephalopathy. The ketogenic diet (KD) has been successfully used as a treatment for IS. This study was designed to test whether beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a major metabolite of the KD, is effective in an animal model of IS. METHODS: Pregnant rats received betamethasone on gestational day 15. The offspring received either single [30min prior to NMDA-triggered spasms on postnatal day (P) 15] or prolonged (three per day from P12 to P15) i.p. BHB. An additional experiment used repeated bouts of spasms on P12, P13, and P15 with randomized prolonged BHB treatment initiated after …

Cosmopolitanism And Pancultural Universals: Our Common Denominator And An Anthropologically Based Cosmopolitanism, Christoph Antweiler Ph.D.
Journal of International and Global Studies
How can we conceive of global culture as an entity without playing unity and diversity off one another? The diversity of interconnected cultures on a bounded planet requires shared orientations. Thus, the conceptualization of a cosmopolitan humanism is an urgent project for humanity. Particularly, it is of urgent necessity that we determine what a version of cosmopolitan humanism looks like that does not rush to universalize the views and historical experiences of the European or American world? The need for unity is juxtaposed against the ubiquitous tendency to differentiate. All are alike, yet all are different, and above all, everyone …

Korbel Sawmill Report Revision, Susie Van Kirk
Susie Van Kirk Papers
The California Redwood Company (Green Diamond Resource Company/Simpson Timber Company) closed its Korbel mill February 2015. Decommissioning plans will include the sale of equipment, requiring partial dismantling of the sawmill. At some later date, the sawmill will be demolished. To comply with California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA) Section 15064.5, “Determining the Significance of Impacts to Archaeological and Historical Resources,” a Historic Resources Report was prepared. The report includes historic background information on the mill site, assessment of the sawmill using CEQA criteria, and a determination of significance.

A Benign Prior Restraint Rule For Public School Classroom Speech, Scott R. Bauries
A Benign Prior Restraint Rule For Public School Classroom Speech, Scott R. Bauries
Law Faculty Scholarly Articles
This Article is a contribution to a symposium on schools and free speech. It advances the claim that the First Amendment doctrines that apply to the classroom should adopt a benign prior restraint rule. In the case of teacher classroom speech, the Garcetti rule should apply where the government’s action in interfering with the speech constitutes a prior restraint—the First Amendment should not reach such interference. In cases where a teacher first speaks and then is later punished for that speech, however, basic notions of due process and the dangers of arbitrary governmental decision making are far more pressing, and …

Biomedical developments in the 21st century provide an unprecedented opportunity to gain a dynamic systems-level and human-specific understanding of the causes and pathophysiologies of disease. This understanding is a vital need, in view of continuing failures in health research, drug discovery, and clinical translation. The full potential of advanced approaches may not be achieved within a 20th-century conceptual framework dominated by animal models. Novel technologies are being integrated into environmental health research and are also applicable to disease research, but these advances need a new medical research and drug discovery paradigm to gain maximal benefits. We suggest a new conceptual …

Stereotypies are repetitive and relatively invariant patterns of behavior, which are observed in a wide range of species in captivity. Stereotypic behavior occurs when environmental demands produce a physiological response that, if sustained for an extended period, exceeds the natural physiological regulatory capacity of the organism, particularly in situations that include unpredictability and uncontrollability. One hypothesis is that stereotypic behavior functions to cope with stressful environments, but the existing evidence is contradictory. To address the coping hypothesis of stereotypies, we triggered physiological reactions in 22 horses affected by stereotypic behavior (crib-biters) and 21 non-crib-biters (controls), using an ACTH challenge test. …
Veganism As An Aspiration, Lori Gruen, Robert C. Jones
Veganism As An Aspiration, Lori Gruen, Robert C. Jones
Dietary Choice and Foods of Animal Origin Collection
iven the violence, objectification, domination, commodification, and oppression inherent in industrialized food production, some conscientious consumers have adopted vegan practices. This chapter discusses two conceptions of veganism, lifestyle/identity veganism, VI, and veganism as a goal/aspiration, VA. It argues that due to conceptual and practical flaws with VI, conscientious consumers should adopt VA. It considers and rejects the so-called compassionate carnivore movement. It then explores arguments denying the casual efficacy of adopting any form of veganism. It concludes that VA can make a difference, and those in consumer cultures are obligated to adopt and practice it.
The Breakup: The Declaration Of Independence, Frederick Douglass, And Me, Kristin R. Lindsey
The Breakup: The Declaration Of Independence, Frederick Douglass, And Me, Kristin R. Lindsey
College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations
The Declaration of Independence declared sovereignty and freedom for America predicated upon the inherent equality and rights of its people. The Declaration also invented a revolutionary expectation and right of protest should government fail to deliver and protect those rights. These rights and self-evident truths, this paper argues, were never extended, or intended, for the nation's Black inhabitants. This underlying hypocrisy has led generations of African Americahs, from the nation's beginning through current day, to careen between hope, desp air, fighting back, deciding to leave, or demanding change. This paper explores the meaning of the Declaration, the experience of black …

The influence of aggressive and violent media on children and adolescents has been a topic of concern for several decades. Research on this topic has suggested that both short term and long term exposure to aggressive/violent media can negatively impact this population. The purpose of this literature review is to discuss relevant research on the topic and examine various factors that may impact the risk of being influenced by this type of media. These factors can include time spent viewing media, content of the media viewed, gender, age, psychological characteristics, family, and peers. Various theoretical approaches to explaining the influence …
Identification Of Novel Gastric Stem Cell Markers And Investigation Of Intestinal Stem Cell Cre-Mediated Recombination, Theresa M. Keeley
Identification Of Novel Gastric Stem Cell Markers And Investigation Of Intestinal Stem Cell Cre-Mediated Recombination, Theresa M. Keeley
Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations
Very few genetic markers for gastric stem cells are currently described. Identifying new markers is important for increasing our basic understanding of gastric tissues and studying mechanisms of cancer development. Gastric and intestinal tissues share a common developmental program. Thus, intestinal stem cell genetic drivers were investigated for putative expression in gastric stem cells, utilizing Cre/Lox technology for lineage tracing. The recombination efficiencies of reporters with intestinal drivers and the effect of tamoxifen-induced tissue damage were also investigated.
It was discovered that higher doses of tamoxifen do not increase reporter activation in the intestine but induce gastric tissue damage. It …

Kcnj10 encodes the inwardly rectifying K(+) channel Kir4.1 in the basolateral membrane of the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and is activated by c-Src. However, the regulation and function of this K(+) channel are incompletely characterized. Here, patch-clamp experiments in Kcnj10-transfected HEK293 cells demonstrated that c-Src-induced stimulation of Kcnj10 requires coexpression of caveolin-1 (cav-1), and immunostaining showed expression of cav-1 in the basolateral membrane of parvalbumin-positive DCT. Patch-clamp experiments detected a 40-pS inwardly rectifying K(+) channel, a heterotetramer of Kir4.1/Kir5.1, in the basolateral membrane of the early DCT (DCT1) in both wild-type (WT) and cav-1-knockout (KO) mice. However, the activity of …
