© Author(s) 2014. Advances in forest carbon mapping have the potential to greatly reduce uncertainties in the global carbon budget and to facilitate effective emissions mitigation strategies such as REDD+ (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation). Though broad-scale mapping is based primarily on remote sensing data, the accuracy of resulting forest carbon stock estimates depends critically on the quality of field measurements and calibration procedures. The mismatch in spatial scales between field inventory plots and larger pixels of current and planned remote sensing products for forest biomass mapping is of particular concern, as it has the potential to introduce …

Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun
Temporal Signature Modeling And Analysis, Jiangqin Sun
Theses
A vast amount of digital satellite and aerial images are collected over time, which calls for techniques to extract useful high-level information, such as recognizable events. One part of this thesis proposes a framework for streaming analysis of the time series, which can recognize events without supervision and memorize them by building the temporal contexts. The memorized historical data is then used to predict the future and detect anomalies. A new incremental clustering method is proposed to recognize the event without training. A memorization method of double localization, including relative and absolute localization, is proposed to model the temporal context. …

Evidence-Based Change In Practice: Development And Implementation Of Type Ii Diabetic Flow Sheet, Kathryn Grimleybaker
Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) Projects
Ten percent of the National Health Service annual budget goes to treat complications from diabetes (Lancet, 2010). The American Diabetes Association® (ADA, 2013) estimated that diabetics in the United States incur $176 billion annually in direct medical costs for treatment with hospitalization being the main component of the expenditures. California has the largest population of diabetics and the highest annual cost at $27.6 billion (ADA, 2013). The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project (HCUP, 2008) found that the average cost of hospitalization in 2008 for a patient with diabetes was $10,937 in contrast to $8,746 for a patient without diabetes. The …

The (d,α) reaction is highly selective, favoring final states in which the removed neutron and proton are completely aligned in a J=2j configuration. We have studied the C14,15(d,α)B12,13 reactions in inverse kinematics using the Helical Orbit Spectrometer (HELIOS) at Argonne National Laboratory. In B12, the reaction strongly favors the population of a known 3+ state at 5.61 MeV, and for B13, we observe a possible unreported doublet of states at high excitation energy, probably corresponding to the B12(3+) state coupled to the 1s1/2 neutron from the C15 ground state. In contrast to single-nucleon transfer, deuteron-transfer reactions have not been widely …

Coordination Nature Of 4-Mercaptoaniline To Sn(Ii) Ion: Formation Of A One Dimensional Coordination Polymer And Its Decomposition To A Mono Nuclear Sn(Iv) Complex, Eon S. Burkett, Tasneem A. Siddiquee
Chemistry Faculty Research
The coordination of the bifunctional ligand 4-mercaptoaniline with aqueo us tin(II) metal ion was studied. A coordination polymer was synthesized when an aqueous solution of SnCl2 was treated with 4-MA. The crystalline material is stable under atmospheric conditions retaining its oxidation state. However, when submerged in a solution saturated with oxygen, the compound oxidizes to a mononuclear tin(IV) complex. Both the compounds were characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction studies. Although the structure of the tin(IV) complex was previously reported, crystal structure of this compound was redetermined.
Evaluation Of The Mass Transfer Effect Of The Stalk Contraction–Relaxation Cycle Of Vorticella Convallaria, Jiazhong Zhou
Evaluation Of The Mass Transfer Effect Of The Stalk Contraction–Relaxation Cycle Of Vorticella Convallaria, Jiazhong Zhou
Department of Mechanical and Materials Engineering: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Vorticella convallaria is a genus of protozoa living in fresh water. It has a bell-shaped zooid equipped with adoral ciliary bands and a contractile stalk tethering the zooid to a substrate. Vorticella is regarded as a biological spring because its contractile stalk can pull the zooid towards the substrate at a remarkably high speed and then relaxes to its extended state much more slowly. However, reasons for Vorticella’s stalk contraction are still unknown. It is presumed that the flow field induced by the contraction-relaxation cycle of Vorticella would augment mass transfer effect near the substrate. We investigated this hypothesis …

Project Risk Identification For Government Projects In Anchorage And Palmer, August R. Banks
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
This study reflects the research and analysis associated with identification of risk classifications and potential risks (both positive and negative) for use in project risk analyses in government projects managed via contract. Relying on literature reviews and surveys, a risk breakdown structure (RBS) and risk register with mitigation strategies are developed for use as a checklist by the organizations participating in the project; the General Services Administration (GSA) and the Plant Materials Center of the Alaska Department of Natural Resources (DNR/PMC). The survey findings support the original objective of establishing a common core of risks among the participating organizations. The …

This data set was collected during the Fall 2014 cruise with Semester at Sea (SAS). It covers 2 MS Excel files of marine species surveys (three worksheets: opportunistic 5 minutes, and Distance Sampling 10 minutes, Individual Sightings) as well as harbour species surveys (one file with one worksheet). The SAS cruise of fall 2014 took place in the Atlantic, southern Baltic, the Mediterrean and Caribbean Seas and has the following bounding box coordinates (decimal degrees of latitude and longitude WGS 1984): Highest latitude 59.88929 North, lowest latitude -22.28687 South, most western longitude -81.80984, most eastern longitude -40.91894. Build a ‘Machine That Walks’ using leg like linkages that is only powered by wind. It must walk a minimum of 4 meters to prove that it is capable of walking and at least half of the materials used must be recyclable or reusable within the greater St. Louis area. The machine must not exceed 10 kg and must fit in the volume of 30 cm x 60 cm x 40 cm and must be unable to be easily knocked over.

Mechanical Engineering Design Project Class
Our design problem was to create a solar radiation tracking device. The primary goal of this device was to keep a solar panel perpendicular to the solar radiation with 95% efficiency throughout the day. The tracker had to be able to account for the sun’s seasonal angle in St. Louis, and the design would be even better if it could account for the sun’s seasonal angle at any latitude. Another important aspect of the solar tracker design was that it must be able to reset itself each day for the sunrise without human input. Other aspects to consider were weatherproofing …

Purpose: The ever-growing variety of methods available for smoking cessation have the potential to lead to confusion influencing a patient’s willingness to quit smoking. The aim of this study is to investigate if a change in patient motivation and product preference has occurred after receiving education on the various smoking cessation products
Methods : An informative poster was created to highlight different smoking cessation methods .A questionnaire was developed to assess patient motivation to quit utilizing the ‘Readiness to Quit Ladder’ and patient experiences with or preference between various smoking cessation methods.1The poster was displayed in various pharmacy settings, including …
