Market Structure-Driven Discrimination And The Earnings Of Subordinate Managers: An Analysis By Union Density, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa
Market Structure-Driven Discrimination And The Earnings Of Subordinate Managers: An Analysis By Union Density, Richard U. Agesa, Jacqueline Agesa
Economics Faculty Research
Recent work examines the market structure/racial earnings relationship for union and nonunion workers and finds that standardized union earnings protect black workers from market structure–driven earnings discrimination. This study examines the market structure/racial earnings relationship for low and mid-level managers in high- and low-union density industries. Our findings indicate that there is less market structure–driven discrimination of managers in highly unionized industries. We suggest that there is a spillover effect of reduced market structure–driven discrimination of managers in highly unionized industries that stems from standardized, more racially equitable wages of union workers.

Recent developments in the use of technologies in education have provided unique opportunities for teaching and learning. This paper describes the results of a survey conducted at Western University (Canada) in 2013, regarding the use of media by students and instructors. The results of this study support the assumption that the media usage of students and instructors include a mixture of traditional and new media. The main traditional media continue to be important, and some new media have emerged as seemingly on equal footing or even more important than the traditional forms of media. Some new media that have recently …

Counselor Education Capstones
Adolescents in the United States have an infinite amount of access to a multitude of the different types of mass media, including movies, television, music, magazines, and the Internet. Most of these adolescents tend to spend more time focusing on the media rather than the education they receive in the school or their parents. The majority of this content glamorizes being sexually active, including different types of sex messages with dialogue and content. Few of these different messages and content in the media include any type of information about being safe by using contraceptives and being mindful of sexual health. …

Introduction
• Geriatric patients (> 65 years of age) have a 3-5% incremental increase in annual occurrence of trauma making it a top five leading cause of death in this population.
• The mortality rate ranges from 15-30%, which is 4-5 times higher than younger patients.
• In 2011, data from the Pennsylvania Trauma Systems Foundation (PTSF) demonstrated nearly 32% of injured patients statewide and nearly 50% of the trauma patients at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital (TJUH) were > 65 years.
• Most geriatric patients have comorbidities that are treated with many medications, which may predispose them for falls.
• Although …

Cloned Microglias With Novel Delivery System In Multiple Sclerosis, Abdul Mannan Baig Dr.
Department of Biological & Biomedical Sciences
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) is a chronic inflammatory neurological disease of the Central Nervous System (CNS), characterized by demyelination and activation of microglia. Mitochondrial mutations and dysfunctions in microglial cells are thought to contribute to the detrimental effects of neuroinflammation seen in MS. The Somatic Nuclear Transfer (SCNT) technology offers a more practical mode of therapy in MS, this method would attempt to dilute and/or progressively replace the mutated and activated microglia with cloned Olfactory Ensheathing Cells (OEC) with remyelinating and scavenging properties which would attempt to limit the progression of MS. Applying SCNTderived Embryonic Stem (ES) cells based therapy by …
Coleman V. Tollefson: Brief Amici Curiae Of Thirty-Three Professors In Support Of Petitioner, Margo Schlanger
Coleman V. Tollefson: Brief Amici Curiae Of Thirty-Three Professors In Support Of Petitioner, Margo Schlanger
Appellate Briefs
Amici are professors with an academic interest in prisoner litigation and federal courts
The Prison Litigation Reform Act's "three strikes" provision, 28 U.S.C. § 1915(g), bars a prisoner from bringing a civil action without prepaying the full amount of the filing fee only if that prisoner has three prior qualifying dismissals that have become final on appeal.
Reversing the Sixth Circuit's contrary reading of the statute in this case will not open the floodgates to frivolous prisoner litigation, as both the provisions of the Prison Litigation Reform Act (PLRA) and data from the Federal Judicial Center confirm.

Culturally-Appropriate, Family- And Community-Based Physical Activity And Healthy Eating Intervention For African-American Middle School-Aged Girls: A Feasibility Pilot, Daheia J. Barr-Anderson, Alexis W. Adams-Wynn, Sofiya Alhassan, Melicia C. Whitt-Glover
Journal of Adolescent and Family Health
This study tested the feasibility and acceptability of a physical activity, healthy eating, and social support intervention. Twelve African-American daughter-mother dyads (BMI percentile: daughters=92.6±12.79; BMI: mothers=38.8±5.81 kg/m2) met weekly during the 8-week Intensive Phase; throughout the 6-month Maintenance Phase, participants received monthly newsletters for 3 months and attended monthly face-to-face sessions for 3 months. Daughters and mothers reported positive feedback about intervention activities and educational curriculum. Post-intervention daughter survey results revealed positive trends towards increasing PA; increasing breakfast, water, and fruit/vegetable intake; and reducing sugar sweetened drink consumption. Mothers reported similar behavioral changes. This unique intervention was highly enjoyed by …

Determining The Health Problems Of Alaska Military Youth Academy Participants, Mark W. Doughty
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
Alaska Military Youth Academy is an accredited residential high school program that utilizes a quasi-military approach to teach life skills to at-risk youth. Physical fitness is a key component and is modeled after military basic training standards. Participants in the program are largely from disadvantaged backgrounds and frequently disconnected from the healthcare system. The purpose of this project was to identify and describe the most life-threatening and/or prevalent pre-existing health conditions of program participants. A retrospective review of applications and pre-participation physical exams submitted by participants (N = 771) from March, 2012 through February, 2014 was conducted in order to …

Development Of A Prioritization Tool For Bp Exploration (Alaska) Inc. Category C Projects, Carlos Lujan
Student Projects for Graduate Degrees
The production of oil and gas in the major North Slope fields in Alaska is on the decline as it is in any major oilfield of this age. Capital resources must therefore be utilized with the greatest efficiency. BP Exploration (Alaska) Inc. (BPXA) Projects and Modifications Team (PMT) provides front end loading (FEL) engineering and construction planning services for category (Cat) “C” projects (range from $250,000 - $15,000,000) through BP’s Capital Value Process (CVP), a stage gated project development process. One of BPXA’s strategic objectives is to improve the utilization of Cat C projects capital resources. The project will develop …

Impacts Of Land-Cover Change And High Rainfall On Soil Erosion Among Three Farms In Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, Panamá., Madeline Happ
Impacts Of Land-Cover Change And High Rainfall On Soil Erosion Among Three Farms In Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, Panamá., Madeline Happ
Independent Study Project (ISP) Collection
Soil erosion is a key source leading to the depletion of Earth’s natural resources. Beginning with deforestation, soils are stripped of their rich vegetation cover, leaving them vulnerable to wind, water, and sometimes total exhaustion. One of the major causes of deforestation, if not the primary cause, is for agricultural purposes. Extensive agricultural fields, steep slopes, and heavy rains characterize the highlands of Chiriquí; thus, the land displays potential for severe loss of soil. This paper illustrates and discusses the extent of soil erosion in Cerro Punta, Chiriquí, specifically considering the steep terrains and very wet environment that impact the …
