In 2010, the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts accessioned a ritual gourd from Mambila peoples of Nigeria and Cameroon into their collection. Although ritual containers with similar configurations abound in different parts of the Cameroon Grasslands in Central Africa, the VMFA gourd presents particular difficulties due to the nature of its accumulation and the lack of scholarship on the Mambila peoples. Therefore, in this thesis, all the aspects of its accumulation have been considered in relation to the culture and belief system of the Mambila and their neighbors. Reducing crime has been the most intractable problem facing successive government administrations in Trinidad and Tobago since the late 1990s. Community based crime prevention must be an important element of any multi-faceted crime abatement strategy. Collective efficacy which purports to describe a community's capacity for social regulation is associated with lower levels of crime and has become an objective in crime prevention policy (IADB Loan Proposal, TT-L1003, n.d.). Throughout his literary career, Horace is very careful in addressing political subjects within his poetry, especially the divisive subject of the Roman civil war, a conflict that was still painfully fresh in the national memory. One of the earliest instances in which the Roman civil war is directly addressed occurs in Epode 9, a sympotic poem addressed to Maecenas sometime during or immediately after the Battle of Actium. This poem appears in a body of work which is loosely modeled after the Greek iambic tradition, a poetic genre which is generally characterized as "blame poetry." However, the mythical origins of …

My dissertation the first book-length project to address long-held notions about elite masculinity in medieval Iberia. I contend that the study of masculinity must transcend our understanding of the male subject as a fixed point of reference; rather, he is to be understood as a mobile and multivalent construct in constant negotiation with cultural artifacts. I understand masculinity to be the set of socially constructed meanings and values imposed upon biologically male persons. The social norms associated with masculinity exist in relation to a given historical and cultural context, and are subject to change. Even within a particular moment in …

Bacillus anthracis, the causative agent of anthrax, has to be able to adapt to different physical conditions encountered during the beginning and establishment of the infection process inside the host. One of these conditions is the availability of nutrients like iron. B. anthracis secretes siderophores capable of competing with the iron transport/storage proteins of the host. Previous studies have been dedicated to the analysis of these systems. However, the impact of iron availability on B. anthracis metabolism from a global perspective remains as unclear. This paper studies the first six seasons of the hit television show M*A*S*H (1972-1983) and examines how the sociocultural climate of the 1960s and 1970s in America influenced the show's portrayal of the Korean War and how, in turn, the show reflects those cultural influences. This study focuses on the influence of the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the Cold War, second-wave feminism, and the gay and sexual liberation movements. It argues that each of these movements and events had a profound influence upon M*A*S*H, which is evident in its portrayal of the Korean War as a conflict infused …

In December 2010, public demonstrations erupted throughout the Middle East against autocratic regimes, igniting a regional political transformation known as the Arab Spring. Depending on events, modern international criminal and humanitarian law provided certain protections to vulnerable populations. However, international law did not provide a uniform degree of protection to civilians and combatants who faced similar circumstances. This Article argues for a uniform standard of protections for all populations affected by armed conflict, war crimes, and crimes against humanity. Leni Sinclair is a photographer who came to the United States in 1959 from communist East Germany. Sinclair is recognized for being a prominent photographer of artists ranging from Sun Ra to the MC5. Though most that study the era and the revolutionary groups surrounding Detroit and Ann Arbor focus on her [then] husband’s work (John Sinclair,) Leni has provided an equally important documentation of the ‘60s and ‘70s. Lying About Terrorism, Erin M. Kearns, Brendan Conlon, Joseph K. Young

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

Conventional wisdom holds that terrorism is committed for strategic reasons as a form of costly signaling to an audience. However, since over half of terrorist attacks are not credibly claimed, conventional wisdom does not explain many acts of terrorism. This article suggests that there are four lies about terrorism that can be incorporated in a rationalist framework: false claiming, false flag, the hot-potato problem, and the lie of omission. Each of these lies about terrorism can be strategically employed to help a group achieve its desired goal(s) without necessitating that an attack be truthfully claimed.

How to employ numerical methods to predict the dynamic behavior of underwater vehicles will become important in the near future. Over the past decade, the results obtained from the Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) methods had been proven similar to that of experimental approach with the same test conditions.
