Africa has experienced a remarkable turn-around in economic performance since 1995. It grew at around 4.6 percent per year during the first decade of the 21st century, and the region boasts three of the world’s ten fastest-growing countries. Cheerleaders as diverse as the Economist and the World Bank have branded Africa the developing world’s next “frontier market”. But beneath the headlines lie some disturbing realities. The Democratic Peace Principle is both a well-documented and a heavily scrutinized element of International Relations theory. My research aims to further analyze the principle to determine more precise conditions under which conflict can arise between democratic states. More specifically, my research analyzes the amount of conflict between democratic states of differing military and economic capabilities in order to see if such dyads have different dynamics than dyads with comparable military and economic might. This thesis explores the evidence of sexism in the literary works of C. S. Lewis. Lewis’s relationships with women in his personal life were often estranged, and his works frequently display a predominant view of women as inferior. Each of Lewis’s major fictional works shows evidence of sexism, though such evidence lessens in frequency and prominence with each subsequent work. Lewis’s opinion and portrayal of women did change with his marriage to Joy Davidman Gresham, though his fiction never achieved a complete lack of prejudice against women.

Using the non-fictional works of eighteenth-century authors like Dugald Stewart, James Beattie, and William Wordsworth in conjunction with the poetry of Charlotte Smith and Ann Radcliffe, among others, the eighteenth-century poetic “Fancy” develops as a representation of the period’s concern over genius and the imaginative mind. Fancy emerges as an entity which overcomes any gendered consideration, and acts as a powerful vessel in which contemplation on understanding and creativity can be identified.

With issues such as the Syrian Civil War taking a central role in current political discussion, it is important to understand fully what is occurring in the ethical conversations surrounding it. There are three philosophies that represent the ethics of war. These philosophical schools are referred to as Realism, Pacifism and Just War Theory. Because both Pacifism and Realism fail to adequately frame ethics in times of conflict, Just War Theory should be used to determine whether preemptive wars are ever ethical. Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is the “signature wound” seen in veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, from which the U.S. now has over 20,000 young veterans living with TBI. As part of the independence constitutional arrangements for Northern Rhodesia, in May 1964 in London, Kenneth David Kaunda, then Prime Minister at the head of the Self Government of Northern Rhodesia signed the Barotseland Agreement with the Litunga of the Lozi people Sir Mwanawina Lewanika III. The Barotseland Agreement of 1964 recognised the Litunga of Barotseland (Bulozi) as the principal local authority for the government and administration of Barotseland, with powers to make laws of Barotseland in respect to matters such as land, natural resources and taxation. This course will examine wars of religion and religious views of war, focusing particularly on how religion has informed the international laws of war. We are living through an era fraught with religious warfare - wars animated by religious conflict and wars that use religious abuse as weapons to demoralize and subdue the enemy. “The Sense Of That Crush I Feel At Certain Times Even Now.”: Jacob Stroyer And The Battle For Fort Sumter, Susanna Ashton

In the summer of 1864, fourteen-year-old Jacob Stroyer was sent to work in Fort Sum-ter. He did not go willingly. Stroyer was a slave owned by the wealthy Mrs. Matthew R. Singleton and was sent from the large Kensington plantation outside Columbia, SC to labor for the Confederate cause. Th e Confederate Corps of Engineers called upon slave owners to contribute their enslaved people’s labor to the problem of construction and fortification of roads, bridges, and key defensive sites. Stroyer explained that fifteen slaves from his plantation “were sent to work on fortifications each year during the war.”²
