The Black Experience In The United States: An Examination Of Lynching And Segregation As Instruments Of Genocide, Brandy Marie Langley
The Black Experience In The United States: An Examination Of Lynching And Segregation As Instruments Of Genocide, Brandy Marie Langley
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Abstract
This thesis analyzes lynching and segregation in the American South between the years 1877 and 1951. It argues that these crimes of physical and social violence constitute genocide against black Americans, according to the definitions of genocide proposed by Raphael Lemkin and then the later legal definition adopted by the United Nations. American law and prevailing white American social beliefs sanctioned these crimes. Lynching and segregation were used as tools of persecution intended to keep black people in their designated places in a racial hierarchy in the United States at this time period. These crimes were two of many …
Development Of Virtue Ethics Based Security Constructs For Information Systems Trusted Workers, John M. Gray, Gurvirender Tejay
Development Of Virtue Ethics Based Security Constructs For Information Systems Trusted Workers, John M. Gray, Gurvirender Tejay
CCE Student and Alumni Proceedings, Presentations, Speeches and Lectures
Despite an abundance of research on the problem of insider threats only limited success has been achieved in preventing trusted insiders from committing security violations. Virtue ethics may be a new approach that can be utilized to address this issue. Human factors such as moral considerations and decisions impact information system design, use, and security; consequently they affect the security posture and culture of an organization. Virtue ethics based concepts have the potential to influence and align the moral values and behavior of Information Systems workers with those of an organization in order to provide increased protection of IS assets. …

Zen And The Art Of Treason: Radical Buddhism In Meiji Era (1868–1912) Japan, James Mark Shields
Faculty Journal Articles
In the early decades of the twentieth century, as Japanese society became engulfed in war and increasing nationalism, the majority of Buddhist leaders and institutions capitulated to the status quo. At the same time, there was a stream of ‘resistance’ among a few Buddhist figures, both priests and laity. These instances of progressive and ‘radical Buddhism’ had roots in late Edo-period peasant revolts, the lingering discourse of early Meiji period liberalism, trends within Buddhist reform and modernisation and the emergence in the first decade of the twentieth century of radical political thought, including various forms of socialism and anarchism. This …

Sic For Advanced Biological Applications, Joseph Register
Sic For Advanced Biological Applications, Joseph Register
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Silicon carbide (SiC) has been used for centuries as an industrial abrasive and has been
actively researched since the 1960's as a robust material for power electronic applications.
Despite being the first semiconductor to emit blue light in 1907, it has only recently been
discovered that the material has crucial properties ideal for long-term, implantable biomedical
devices. This is due to the fact that the material offers superior biocompatibility and
hemocompatibility while providing rigid mechanical and chemical stability. In addition, the material
is a wide-bandgap semiconductor that can be used for optoelectronics, light delivery, and optical
sensors, which is the …
Multi-Rotor--Aided Three-Dimensional 802.11 Wireless Heat Mapping, Scott James Pack
Multi-Rotor--Aided Three-Dimensional 802.11 Wireless Heat Mapping, Scott James Pack
Theses and Dissertations
Traditional wireless site surveys produce a heat-map of link strength or quality over a target area, usually on the ground plane. In recent years research has gone into using aerial drones in network attack and surveillance, making three dimensional awareness of wireless coverage areas of interest. A multi-rotor drone and data collection module were built and tested as part of this research. Site assessments were conducted both in open space and near structures. Collected data was interpolated across the target area, and visualized as points and contours. These visualizations were exported to a Keyhole Markup Language (KML) for visualization in …

Becoming Rey Ileto: Language, History, And Autobiography, Vicente L.; Rafael
Becoming Rey Ileto: Language, History, And Autobiography, Vicente L.; Rafael
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
Thisarticle inquires into the relationship between translation and autobiography in the work of Reynaldo Ileto. In Pasyon and Revolution, English and Tagalog are juxtaposed in a relationship of translation, indicating linguistic complexity and a politics of language that are deflected in Ileto’s later autobiographical writings. Yet, autobiography can also work like translation, but in the opposite direction of Pasyon and Revolution. Rather than loosen linguistic and social hierarchies, autobiography reinforces them. Ileto’s narrative tells of the splitting and substitution of selves, the excavation and overcoming of the father’s name, and the replacement of the “unfinished revolution” project with stories of …

Father And Son In The Embrace Of Uncle Sam, Reynaldo C.; Ileto
Philippine Studies: Historical and Ethnographic Viewpoints
This essay offers a reflection on the American sojourns of two Filipinos, Reynaldo Ileto and his father, Rafael Ileto, at two different historical periods. It brings to the fore the interplay of personal experiences and regimes of knowledge that constitute one’s belonging and response to the US empire. Rafael Ileto’s beliefs and actions are framed in light of his upbringing and his times, resulting in a military career that exemplified the special relationship between the United States and the Philippines. But the historical moment of Reynaldo Ileto’s graduate studies at Cornell University led to a path that diverged ideologically from …

Analysis Of Biological Weapon Spread Through A Transportation Network, Michael V. Macandrew
Analysis Of Biological Weapon Spread Through A Transportation Network, Michael V. Macandrew
Theses and Dissertations
Biological weapons are one of the top five threats identified by the Department of Defense in the United States. While most people commonly associate weapons of mass destruction only with atomic bombs, biological agents still have the ability to inflict mass casualties and panic. By strategically placing bioweapon detection units, known as BioWatch, in various airports, a disease spread could be detected and mitigated before country wide dispersal of the disease occurs. Key cities to invest this program are investigated through network analysis of flight itineraries with large volumes of traffic. In addition to analyzing an airport network, there is …
Interface Evaluation For Open System Architectures, Joshua A. Burger
Interface Evaluation For Open System Architectures, Joshua A. Burger
Theses and Dissertations
This research develops a deterministic interface evaluation framework (IEF) in support of the principles identified in the Modular Open Systems Approach (MOSA). Interface evaluation in weapon system development requires a Decision Analysis (DA) method capable of handling a continuously growing alternative set and functioning with limited availability of senior decision makers. Value Focused Thinking (VFT) is selected as the best method for addressing the parameters of the framework. Inputs from the Medium Altitude Unmanned Aircraft System program office are used. An initial value threshold is established to guide open interface decisions, based on assessments of 15 historical decision scenarios. Open …
Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor
Secure Ads-B: Towards Airborne Communications Security In The Federal Aviation Administration's Next Generation Air Transportation System, Richard C. Agbeyibor
Theses and Dissertations
The U.S. Congress has mandated that all aircraft operating within the National Airspace System, military or civilian, be equipped with ADS-B transponders by the year 2020. The ADS-B aircraft tracking system, part of the Federal Aviation Administration's NextGen overhaul of the Air Transportation System, replaces Radar-based surveillance with a more accurate satellite-based surveillance system. However, the unencrypted nature of ADS-B communication poses an operational security risk to military and law enforcement aircraft conducting sensitive missions. The non-standard format of its message and the legacy communication channels used by its transponders make the ADS-B system unsuitable for traditional encryption mechanisms. FPE, …
Optimization Of Graphene Sensors To Detect Biological Warfare Agents, Matthew J. Quinton
Optimization Of Graphene Sensors To Detect Biological Warfare Agents, Matthew J. Quinton
Theses and Dissertations
The Defense Threat Reduction Agency and the Air Force Office of Scientific Research require sensors to detect biological agents better, faster, and cheaper. This research explores the use of graphene functionalized with single strand deoxyribonucleic acid (ssDNA) aptamers as a detection method for the Sterne strain of Bacillus anthracis. This research is interesting because of the unique electrical and chemical binding properties of graphene and its interaction with ssDNA and DNA. The interactions of graphene functionalized with ssDNA in response to B. anthracis spores, non-complimentary and complimentary DNA were explored in static and dynamic aqueous environments with indirect complimentary binding …

Application Of A Multi-Objective Network Model To A Combat Simulation Game: "The Drive On Metz" Case Study, Timothy D. Frawley
Theses and Dissertations
War games are routinely analyzed by the Department of Defense to study the players decision making process. This research develops a multicriteria model that enhances a war game players decision-making capability. The war game consists of a hexagonal-grid map of varying terrain that will be represent as a two-dimensional directed network. The network is obstructed by multiple enemy threats that expose a unit traversing the network to possible attack. The player is faced with the decision of choosing a route to a target node that balances the objectives of following the shortest path and maximizing the probability of success. A …
Complex Vlsi Feature Comparison For Commercial Microelectronics Verification, Michael K. Seery
Complex Vlsi Feature Comparison For Commercial Microelectronics Verification, Michael K. Seery
Theses and Dissertations
Shortcomings in IC verification make for glaring vulnerabilities in the form of hardware backdoors, or extraneous operation modes that allow unauthorized, undetected access. The DARPA TRUST program addressed the need for verification of untrusted circuits using industry-standard and custom software. The process developed under TRUST and implemented at the AFRL Mixed Signal Design Center has not been tested using real-world circuits outside of the designated TRUST test cases. This research demonstrates the potential of applying software designed for TRUST test articles on microchips from questionable sources. A specific process is developed for both transistor-level library cell verification and gate-level circuit …
