Teaching And Learning Embodied Making, Marte Sorebo Gulliksen Jul 2014

Teaching And Learning Embodied Making, Marte Sorebo Gulliksen

Publications

Throughout several decades the educational research community has emphasized experiential, embodied learning with attention on the learner. However, after the Bologna/Berlin processes, politicians expect educational institutions to formulate learning outcomes, focusing on the imagined result, the specific curriculum goals, not the way there. In this text I reflect upon embodied making and learning, and why it must be included in the educational institutions to make education sustainable. The reflection begins with a discussion of practice as a condition for human existence, based in Heidegger’s term dasein. As all our experiences are filtered through practice, a disinterested study of the world …

Megatevs: Single-Chain Dual Nucleases For Efficient Gene Disruption, Jason M Wolfs, Matthew Dasilva, Sarah E Meister, Xu Wang, Caroline Schild-Poulter, David R. Edgell

Biochemistry Publications

Targeting gene disruptions in complex genomes relies on imprecise repair by the non-homologous end-joining DNA pathway, creating mutagenic insertions or deletions (indels) at the break point. DNA end-processing enzymes are often co-expressed with genome-editing nucleases to enhance the frequency of indels, as the compatible cohesive ends generated by the nucleases can be precisely repaired, leading to a cycle of cleavage and non-mutagenic repair. Here, we present an alternative strategy to bias repair toward gene disruption by fusing two different nuclease active sites from I-TevI (a GIY-YIG enzyme) and I-OnuI E2 (an engineered meganuclease) into a single polypeptide chain. In vitro, …

Thyroid hormones play a critical physiologic role in regulating protein synthesis, growth, and metabolism. To date, because no published compilation of baseline values for thyroid hormones in beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) exists, assessment of thyroid hormone concentrations in this species has been underused in clinical settings. The purpose of this study was to document the concentrations of total thyroxine (tT4) and total triiodothyronine (tT3) in healthy aquarium-maintained and free-ranging beluga whales and to determine the influence of age, sex, and season on the thyroid hormone concentrations. Archived serum samples were collected from healthy aquarium-maintained (n = 43) …

A Fesability Analysis Of A Novel Constructed Wetland Design Tool For Arusha, Tanzania, Michael R. Sheehan Jul 2014

A Fesability Analysis Of A Novel Constructed Wetland Design Tool For Arusha, Tanzania, Michael R. Sheehan

Open Access Theses

While water is a resource necessary for all life, in Tanzania alone over 20 million people who live in rural areas have no access to improved water sources. Water stress is a major concern in rural Tanzania, where annual potential evaporation can outpace precipitation by hundreds of mm per year. There is a significant need for improved access to water sources for Tanzanians living in rural regions of Arusha. To improve access to water, both water quantity and quality need to be addressed in a treatment system. Various water collection and treatment systems were compared and contrasted through the lens …

Hydrologic Impacts Due To Land Cover Change In The Yellowwood Lake Watershed, Emily Maria Stewart Jul 2014

Hydrologic Impacts Due To Land Cover Change In The Yellowwood Lake Watershed, Emily Maria Stewart

Open Access Theses

The Yellowwood Lake watershed in Southern Indiana has experienced land cover change due to forest harvest throughout the last century. A group of local stakeholders have identified sedimentation into the lake and surface erosion as major concerns for the watershed. The main objective of this study is to better understand how forest harvest methods applied within the watershed effect hydrologic and soil erosion processes. Such knowledge is required to develop a more comprehensive plan to protect the watershed. ^ The Distributed Hydrology-Soil-Vegetation Model (DHSVM) was used for this analysis. This is a physically based, distributed hydrology model that simulates the …

The 3D structures of membrane proteins are typically determined without the presence of a lipid bilayer. For the purpose of studying the role of membranes on the wild type characteristics of the corresponding protein, determining the position and orientation of transmembrane proteins within a membrane environment is highly desirable. Here we report a geometry-based approach to automatically insert a membrane protein with a known 3D structure into pregenerated lipid bilayer membranes with various dimensions and lipid compositions or into a pseudomembrane. The pseudomembrane is built using the Protein Nano-Object Integrator which generates a parallelepiped of user-specified dimensions made up of …

Parental Decisions For Virtual Education For Credit-Deficient High School Students, Todd B. Schweitzer Jul 2014

Parental Decisions For Virtual Education For Credit-Deficient High School Students, Todd B. Schweitzer

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This project performed a qualitative study using in-depth interviews to determine the reasons families enrolled their students in virtual education and to collect their reflections on their experience in virtual education after enrolling. I interviewed the parents or guardians of eight credit-deficient high school students at risk of not graduating who were enrolled in a virtual high school in Oregon. The interviews used 11 open-ended questions in order to answer the two research questions: 1. What are parental reasons for choosing online education for children who are at risk of not graduating from high school with their cohort due to …

Analysis Of A Mathematical Model For The Heave Motion Of A Micro Aerial Vehicle With Flexible Wings Having Non-Local Damping Effects, Jonathan B. Walters Jul 2014

Analysis Of A Mathematical Model For The Heave Motion Of A Micro Aerial Vehicle With Flexible Wings Having Non-Local Damping Effects, Jonathan B. Walters

Doctoral Dissertations

In this work we analyze a one dimensional model for a flexible wing micro aerial vehicle which can undergo heaving motion. The vehicle is modeled with a non-local type of internal damping known as spatial hysteresis as well as viscous external damping. We present a rigorous theoretical analysis of the model proving that the linearly approximated system is well-posed and the first order feedback system operators generate exponentially stable C0–semigroups.

Furthermore, we present numerical simulations of control designs used on the linearly approximated model to control the associated nonlinear model in two different strategies. The first strategy used to …

Clinical Investigation Of Plethysmographic Variability Index: A Derivative Index Of Pulse Oximetry In Anesthetized Dogs, Vaidehi V. Paranjape

Open Access Theses

Plethysmographic Variability Index (PVI) is a derivative index of pulse oximetry that allows evaluating an individual's intravascular volume status. Perfusion Index (PI) represents the strength of pulse signal at the anatomic site of measurement from which PVI is calculated using changes in PI over respiratory cycles. Plethysmographic Variability Index has been used to detect hypovolemia and predict fluid responsiveness in mechanically ventilated human patients however, fewer studies are available in spontaneously breathing patients. The use of PVI has not been explored extensively in dogs so far. The goals of this study were to establish a common range for PVI and …

Climate Variability, Land Ownership And Migration: Evidence From Thailand About Gender Impacts, Sara R. Curran, Jacqueline Meijer-Irons Jul 2014

Climate Variability, Land Ownership And Migration: Evidence From Thailand About Gender Impacts, Sara R. Curran, Jacqueline Meijer-Irons

Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy

Scholars point to climate change, often in the form of more frequent and severe drought, as a potential driver of migration in the developing world, particularly for places where populations rely on agriculture for their livelihoods. To date, however, there have been few large-scale, longitudinal studies that explore the relationship between climate change and migration. This study significantly extends current scholarship by evaluating distinctive effects of climatic variation and models these effects on men’s and women’s responsiveness to drought and rainfall. Our study also investigates how land ownership moderates these effects. We find small, but significant, increases in migration above …

Remediation Of Norm And Tenorm Contaminated Sites—Review Article, R.O. Abdel Rahman, Mohamed Elmesawy, I. Ashour, Yung Tse Hung

Civil and Environmental Engineering Faculty Publications

Naturally Occurring Radioactive Materials (NORM) present in many natural resources, human activities that exploit these resources enhance the concentrations, solubility, and subsequently the exposure to these materials. NORM and Technically Enhanced NORM (TENORM) dispersion in soil, groundwater, and surface water has induced different contamination problems. Dealing with such problems differs from site to site depending on the associated risk. The development of green and sustainable remediation project aims to restore the contaminated sites to productive use and conserves undeveloped areas, minimize or eliminate the pollution source, reduce waste generation, and reduce the associated costs. This work is intended to highlight …

Saving The Federal Circuit, Paul R. Gugliuzza Jul 2014

Saving The Federal Circuit, Paul R. Gugliuzza

Chicago-Kent Journal of Intellectual Property

In a recent, attention-grabbing speech, the Chief Judge of the Seventh Circuit, Diane Wood, argued that Congress should abolish the Federal Circuit’s exclusive jurisdiction over patent cases. Exclusive jurisdiction, she said, provides too much legal uniformity, which harms the patent system. In this response to Judge Wood’s thoughtful speech, I seek to highlight two important premises underlying her argument, neither of which is indisputably true.

The first premise is that the Federal Circuit actually provides legal uniformity. Judge Wood suggests that, due to the Federal Circuit’s exclusive jurisdiction, patent doctrine is insufficiently “percolated,” meaning that it lacks mechanisms through which …

Carl F. Craver And Lindley Darden: In Search Of Mechanisms: Discoveries Across The Life Sciences, Stuart Glennan

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Carl Craver and Lindley Darden are two of the foremost proponents of a recent approach to the philosophy of biology that is often called the New Mechanism. In this book they seek to make available to a broader readership insights gained from more than two decades of work on the nature of mechanisms and how they are described and discovered. The book is not primarily aimed at specialists working on the New Mechanism, but rather targets scientists, students and teachers who are looking for a broad, philosophically and historically informed image of discovery in the life sciences.

The Conflict Between The Fda’S Pre-Launch Activities Importation Request Program And The Hatch-Waxman Act, Alex Cheng, Matthew Avery

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

In 2008, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) implemented the Pre- Launch Activities Importation Request (PLAIR) program. The FDA exercises its enforcement discretion under the guise of the PLAIR program to permit drug manufacturers to import unapproved drugs into the United States so the manufacturers can expedite their commercial launches when they finally receive official FDA approval. But the ability to import unapproved finished drug products into the United States ahead of anticipated FDA approval conflicts with certain provisions of the Hatch-Waxman Act that permit brand-name companies to use permanent injunctions to prevent the importation of generic equivalents of their …

Biophysical Interactions In The Straits Of Florida: Turbulent Mixing Due To Diel Vertical Migrations Of Zooplankton, Cayla Whitney Dean Jul 2014

Biophysical Interactions In The Straits Of Florida: Turbulent Mixing Due To Diel Vertical Migrations Of Zooplankton, Cayla Whitney Dean

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Diel vertical migrations (DVM) comprise the largest animal migration on the planet and are a phenomenon present in all bodies of water on Earth. A strong sound scattering layer undergoing DVM was observed in the Straits of Florida via a bottom-mounted Acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) Workhorse Longranger 75 kHz (Teledyne RD Instruments) located at the 244 m isobath. ADCP average backscatter showed a clear periodicity corresponding with sunrise and sunset times indicating the presence of a nocturnal DVM. Analysis of the ADCP backscatter data indicated zooplankton swimming velocities were faster during sunrise than sunset times. In several cases the …
