Ketamine Psychedelic Psychotherapy: Focus On Its Pharmacology, Phenomenology, And Clinical Applications, Eli Kolp, Harris L. Friedman, Evgeny Krupitsky, Karl Jansen, Mark Sylvester, M. Scott Young, Anna Kolp

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

Meant to be an authoritative guide for psychiatrists and others interested in understanding and applying ketamine psychedelic psychotherapy (KPP), this paper focuses on its pharmacology, phenomenology, and clinical applications. Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic widely used by physicians and veterinarians in the United States. In addition to its anesthetic and dissociative properties, ketamine also has a multitude of other psychological and pharmacological properties, which include analgesic, sedative, neuroprotective, anxiolytic, antidepressant, stimulant, euphoriant, and hallucinogenic effects. The literature on the clinical application of KPP is comprehensively reviewed, practical advice for using KPP is given, and the pharmacology and phenomenology of ketamine-induced …

Real-Time Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Shoulder Girdle And Arm Dynamics, Edward K. Chadwick, Dimitra Blana, Robert F. Kirsch, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert Jul 2014

Real-Time Simulation Of Three-Dimensional Shoulder Girdle And Arm Dynamics, Edward K. Chadwick, Dimitra Blana, Robert F. Kirsch, Antonie J. Van Den Bogert

Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications

Electrical stimulation is a promising technology for the restoration of arm function in paralyzed individuals. Control of the paralyzed arm under electrical stimulation, however, is a challenging problem that requires advanced controllers and command interfaces for the user. A real-time model describing the complex dynamics of the arm would allow user-in-the-loop type experiments where the command interface and controller could be assessed. Real-time models of the arm previously described have not included the ability tomodel the independently controlled scapula and clavicle, limiting their utility for clinical applications of this nature. The goal of this study therefore was to evaluate the …

Options For Adaption To Climate Change, Richard L. Ottinger, Pianpian Wang, Kristin M. Motel Jul 2014

Options For Adaption To Climate Change, Richard L. Ottinger, Pianpian Wang, Kristin M. Motel

Elisabeth Haub School of Law Faculty Publications

In order to tackle climate change, the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (“IPCC”) provided a portfolio of measures: mitigation, adaptation and constant research. Although Article 10 of the Kyoto Protocol underlined the importance of adaptation, adaptation to climate change had been obtained limited attention in the early negotiations of climate talks. In 2010, Cancun Session of Conference of Parties (“COP”) of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (“UNFCCC”) highlighted the equal importance of adaptation just as mitigation. Since then, increasing attention has been drawn to adaptation practice by the international society. Typically, adaptation can be broken down into …

Building Bridges, And Reducing Anger: Liberal-Conservative Dialogue In The United States, Jeremy M. Moses Jul 2014

Building Bridges, And Reducing Anger: Liberal-Conservative Dialogue In The United States, Jeremy M. Moses

Capstone Collection

In the United States today, liberal and conservative citizens are becoming increasingly polarized in their attitudes of hostility toward one another. This has resulted in a socio-political climate in which liberals and conservatives routinely demonize each other, and political differences are unhelpfully framed as matters of good versus evil. Open and honest dialogue between liberals and conservatives has the potential to improve this situation, but a myriad of cultural, psychological, and societal challenges create significant barriers to liberal-conservative dialogue. This paper explores these barriers in detail through a synthesis of research in moral psychology, cognitive psychology, and sociology. It explains …

The objective of the current study was to estimate breed-specific heterosis for the seven largest beef breeds (according to registrations) for birth, weaning and yearling weight.

Birth, weaning and yearling weights were recorded for steers, heifers and bulls (n= 6,834) from Cycle VII and advanced generations of the Germ Plasm Evaluation project of the U.S. Meat Animal Research Center. Breeds represented in these data included: Angus, Hereford, Red Angus, Charolais, Gelbvieh, Simmental, Limousin and composite MARC …

Succinate Dehydrogenase Deficiency In Sporadic Pituitary Adenomas: A Potential Mechanism For Tumorigenesis, Edward Andrews, Md, Stacey K. Mardekian, Md, Markku Miettinen, Mark T. Curtis, Md Jul 2014

Succinate Dehydrogenase Deficiency In Sporadic Pituitary Adenomas: A Potential Mechanism For Tumorigenesis, Edward Andrews, Md, Stacey K. Mardekian, Md, Markku Miettinen, Mark T. Curtis, Md

Department of Pathology, Anatomy, and Cell Biology Resident's Posters

In order to determine whether succinate dehydrogenase (SDH) deficiency plays a role in spor-adic, non-familial pituitary adenomas, we analyzed 80 pituitary adenomas for SDH deficiency from patients without familial tumor syndromes or without known SDH deficiency-associated neoplasms. SDH deficiency was determined by immunohistochemical (IHC) stains for SDHB since the loss of any of the four SDH subunits results in the loss of SDHB expression. Three pituitary adenomas showed complete loss of SDHB staining, and of these two also showed loss of SDHA staining. We further characterized these adenomas by looking at Ki67, IGF1R, and 5-hmC levels via IHC. SDHx …

Socioeconomics Of The Lionfish Derby Fishery, Kristina Ann Trotta Jul 2014

Socioeconomics Of The Lionfish Derby Fishery, Kristina Ann Trotta

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Throughout the western North Atlantic Ocean, Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, invasive Indo-Pacific lionfish (Pterois volitans/miles) have established dense populations, greatly impacting their host environments. Lionfish tournaments have been an important tool for resource managers and other concerned stakeholders in suppressing local populations of lionfish. Tournaments can also bring economic benefits to the communities where they are held, despite this not being the primary purpose.

Five derby events in Florida and the Bahamas were surveyed and 119 participants were interviewed on site, using a survey asking them to describe (1) the lionfish derby experience; (2) non-derby related lionfish …

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Doxorubicin (DOX), one of the most effective anticancer drugs, is known to generate progressive cardiac damage, which is due, in part, to DOX-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS). The elevated ROS often induce oxidative protein modifications that result in alteration of protein functions. This study demonstrates that the level of proteins adducted by 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal (HNE), a lipid peroxidation product, is significantly increased in mouse heart mitochondria after DOX treatment. A redox proteomics method involving two-dimensional electrophoresis followed by mass spectrometry and investigation of protein databases identified several HNE-modified mitochondrial proteins, which were verified by HNE-specific immunoprecipitation in cardiac mitochondria from the …

Mental Health Parity: The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act And The Parity Definition Implications, Suann Kessler Jul 2014

Mental Health Parity: The Patient Protection And Affordable Care Act And The Parity Definition Implications, Suann Kessler

UC Law Science and Technology Journal

At least twenty-eight percent of American adults suffer from a mental or addictive disorder. However, even today, health insurance coverage for mental health services differs drastically from that of other medical services. Nonetheless, although it has yet to achieve parity with other medical services, health insurance coverage for mental health services has improved over time. Because the recent enactment of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (“PPACA”) appears to have filled the parity gaps left by the Mental Health Parity and Addiction Equity Act of 2008, many claim that mental health parity has finally been achieved. While the PPACA …

The Motivation To Comply With Internal Or External Moral Expectations: Is Just One Motivation Enough?, Huey Woon Lee Jul 2014

The Motivation To Comply With Internal Or External Moral Expectations: Is Just One Motivation Enough?, Huey Woon Lee

Dissertations and Theses Collection (Open Access)

Although researchers have shown how the need to reduce internal discrepancies between one’s current level of morality and one’s moral standard and the need to reduce negative social judgment drive pro-social behaviors, it remains unclear if the presence of both these motivations has additive effects on pro-social behaviors. I propose that the answer is no: people operate on a sufficient motivation principle when deciding to behave prosocially, that is, they should be equally prosocial whether one or both motivations are present. I further argue that individual differences in public (PUSC) and private (PRSC) self-consciousness affect people’s attention to the two …

Believe And Achieve: An Examination Of Predictors Of Mathematical Achievement In Secondary Mathematics Students, Malia L. Hite

Doctor of Education (EdD)

This research addressed the following research question: which specific variable has the greatest predictive power of mathematical literacy and problem solving competency while controlling for socioeconomic status (SES)? The variables that were studied were categorized as follows: demographic and personal history variables, attitudinal variables, behavioral variables, and school organization and structure variables. Much of the existing literature cites SES as the most powerful predictor of math achievement. Using multiple linear regression modeling, this study found that many variables studied were determined to be significant predictors of mathematical literacy and/or problem solving competency while controlling for SES. Every category of variables …

Stress And Decline In Woody Plants, Nicole Ward Gauthier, Cheryl A. Kaiser, Jamie Dockery, Delia Scott, Kristin Goodin, Jeremy Williams Jul 2014

Stress And Decline In Woody Plants, Nicole Ward Gauthier, Cheryl A. Kaiser, Jamie Dockery, Delia Scott, Kristin Goodin, Jeremy Williams

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Woody plant stress has many causes that might ultimately lead to plant decline. Tree and shrub degeneration is often referred to as a “complex,” meaning the condition is usually caused by multiple factors. Typically, one or more primary stresses cause deterioration of plant health, followed by secondary pathogens and/or insects that further decline or destroy plants. Determining causes of decline requires careful examination of plants and growing sites, as well as knowledge of site history. Nevertheless, diagnoses may be difficult, as the original cause(s) of plant stress may be obscure or no longer present.

Expanding The Scope And Relevance Of Health Interventions: Moving Beyond Clinical Trials And Behavior Change Models, Khary K. Rigg, Hilary H. Cook, John W. Murphy

Mental Health Law & Policy Faculty Publications

An overemphasis on clinical trials and behavior change models has narrowed the knowledge base that can be used to design interventions. The overarching point is that the process of overanalyzing variables is impeding the process of gaining insight into the everyday experiences that shape how people define health and seek treatment. This claim is especially important to health decision-making and behavior change because subtle interpretations often influence the decisions that people make. This manuscript provides a critique of traditional approaches to developing health interventions, and theoretically justifies what and why changes are warranted. The limited scope of these models is …

Auxin Input Pathway Disruptions Are Mitigated By Changes In Ausin Biosynthetic Gene Expression In Arabidopsis, Gretchen M. Spiess, Amanda Hausman, Peng Yu, Jerry D. Cohen, Rebekah A. Rampey, Bethany K. Zolman Jul 2014

Auxin Input Pathway Disruptions Are Mitigated By Changes In Ausin Biosynthetic Gene Expression In Arabidopsis, Gretchen M. Spiess, Amanda Hausman, Peng Yu, Jerry D. Cohen, Rebekah A. Rampey, Bethany K. Zolman

Faculty Research and Publications

Auxin is a phytohormone involved in cell elongation and division. Levels of indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), the primary auxin, are tightly regulated through biosynthesis, degradation, sequestration, and transport. IAA is sequestered in reversible processes by adding amino acids, polyol or simple alcohols, or sugars, forming IAA conjugates, or through a two-carbon elongation forming indole-3-butyric acid. These sequestered forms of IAA alter hormone activity. To gain a better understanding of how auxin homeostasis is maintained, we have generated Arabidopsis (Arabidopsis tlnaliana) mutants that combine disruptions in the pathways, converting IAA conjugates and indole-3-butyric acid to free IAA. These mutants show phenotypes indicative …

In 2013, the United States Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit rejected a challenge to the Navy's Undersea Warfare Training Range (Range) off the coast of Jacksonville, Florida, based on potential impacts the Range could have to the endangered North Atlantic Right Whale and other endangered species. The court held that the Navy and the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) had met their obligations under the National Environmental Policy Act of 1969 (NEPA as amended and the Endangered Species Act of 1973 (ESA as amended thus far in the project. The court also decided two cases under the Clean …

A Mitogenomics View Of The Population Structure And Evolutionary History Of The Basking Shark Cetorhinus Maximum, Kimberly A. Finnegan Jul 2014

A Mitogenomics View Of The Population Structure And Evolutionary History Of The Basking Shark Cetorhinus Maximum, Kimberly A. Finnegan

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus, has historically been a target of international fisheries, leading to well-documented declines in parts of its global distribution. Currently, the basking shark is listed as globally ‘Vulnerable’ and regionally ‘Endangered’ (North Pacific and Northeast Atlantic) on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species, rendering the species an international conservation priority. Here, we assessed the global matrilineal genetic population structure and evolutionary history of the basking shark by completing the first whole mitochondrial genome sequence level survey of animals sampled from three globally widespread geographic regions: the western North Atlantic (n = 11), the …

A Review Of Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) Vocalizations And An Investigation Into The Existence Of Signature Whistles In A Captive Dolphin Population, Gillian Reily Jul 2014

A Review Of Bottlenose Dolphin (Tursiops Truncatus) Vocalizations And An Investigation Into The Existence Of Signature Whistles In A Captive Dolphin Population, Gillian Reily

HCNSO Student Capstones

Individual recognition of conspecifics is important for various reasons in both terrestrial and marine dwelling species and is carried out through a variety of modes including visual, chemical and auditory cues. The ability to recognize individuals acoustically is often carried out through the use of signature vocalizations. The production and use of signature whistles within bottlenose dolphins has been extensively tested since their existence was first suggested almost 50 years ago. From the research, two primary hypotheses have emerged: the signature whistle hypothesis and the whistle repertoire hypothesis. This work discusses the various acoustical means of individual recognition found within …

The Public Perception Of Green Infrastructure Technologies In Omaha, Nebraska, Matthew Spohr Jul 2014

The Public Perception Of Green Infrastructure Technologies In Omaha, Nebraska, Matthew Spohr

Department of Environmental Studies: Undergraduate Student Theses

This project takes place in two neighborhoods in Omaha, Nebraska: the Saddle Hills neighborhood and the Benson neighborhood. A survey was distributed to neighborhood residents in order to gauge their understanding of stormwater management and green infrastructure technologies. Currently, Omaha uses two types of stormwater/sanitary sewer systems: a combined sewer system (CSS) and a municipal separate storm sewer system (MS4). Approximately half of Omaha operates using the CSS and due to the amount of impermeable surfaces across the city when rainfall events occur the sewer treatment facility discharges untreated excess storm and sewer water into the Missouri River. According to …

Performance Evaluation Of A Tracking Total Station As A Position Reference Fordynamic Gnss Accuracy Testing, Michael P. Sama, Timothy S. Stombaugh

Biosystems and Agricultural Engineering Faculty Publications

The dynamic accuracy of a tracking total station (TTS) was evaluated using a rotary test fixture to determine the viability of using a TTS as a position reference for dynamic global navigation satellite-based system (GNSS) accuracy testing. Tests were performed at angular velocities ranging from 0 to 3.72 rad/s at a radius of 0.635 m. A technique was developed to determine the average latency of the TTS measurement serial data output. TTS measurements were interpolated at a GNSS sampling interval to provide a method for direct comparison between TTS and GNSS position measurements. The estimated latency from the TTS serial …

Multipolarity, Intellectual Property And The Internationalization Of Public Health Law, Sam F. Halabi Jul 2014

Multipolarity, Intellectual Property And The Internationalization Of Public Health Law, Sam F. Halabi

Faculty Publications

This Article critically examines the proliferation of international legal agreements addressing global health threats like the outbreak of infectious diseases, tobacco use and lack of access to affordable medicines. The conventional wisdom behind this trend is that a global normative shift has occurred which has caused states to regard health as “special” and less subject to the normal rules of international law making because health threats endanger all of humanity. This Article challenges that thesis, arguing that at the same time the number and scope of international health law treaties has grown, developed states have subordinated health law to intellectual …

Thermoelectric Elisa For Quantification Of 8ohdg In A Microfluidic Device, Gergana Nestorova Jul 2014

Thermoelectric Elisa For Quantification Of 8ohdg In A Microfluidic Device, Gergana Nestorova

Doctoral Dissertations

This research demonstrates the feasibility of a novel method for performing thermoelectric enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) in a microfluidic device. The feasibility of the thermoelectric ELISA is demonstrated by measuring the concentration of 8-hydroxy 2-deoxyguanosine (8OHdG) in urine samples from amyloid precursor protein (APP) transgenic mice. The detection method is based on formation of a complex between 8OHdG and anti-8OHdG capture antibody conjugated to biotin. The complex is immobilized over the measuring junctions of a thermopile via biotin streptavidin interaction. The concentration of the analyte is determined by using enzyme linked secondary IgG antibody specific to the primary one. The …
