High-Order Consensus Seeking: A Frequency Domain Approach, Bo Yang
High-Order Consensus Seeking: A Frequency Domain Approach, Bo Yang
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
High-order consensus, in which individual high-order dynamic units keep in pace with each other in a distributed fashion, depends both on the feedback gains of the protocol and on the properties of the interaction network. By employing a frequency domain method, we explicitly derive analytical equations that clarify a rigorous connection between the stability of general high-order consensus and the system parameters such as the network topology and feedback gains. Using the derived consensus polynomials, the general sufficient and necessary stability criterion is obtained for high-order consensus networks of arbitrary topology. Furthermore, a sufficient condition of desirable time complexity for …
Sliding Mode Control Of Grid Chaotic Oscillation Based On Immune Algorithm, Li Xiangqun, Liu Jianhua, Yang Longyue
Sliding Mode Control Of Grid Chaotic Oscillation Based On Immune Algorithm, Li Xiangqun, Liu Jianhua, Yang Longyue
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
The bifurcation and chaos phenomenon which exist in power grid are threats to the stable operation of power grid and the safety of people and equipment. In order to eliminate the chaos phenomena in power grid, a kind of non-singular terminal sliding mode (NTSM) variable structure control method based on immune algorithm is put forward. The second-order model of grid chaotic oscillation is built and to be controlled by non-singular terminal sliding mode variable structure controller. Meanwhile, the immune algorithm is introduced to optimize the sliding mode controller parameters. By means of simulation, the effectiveness of this method in the …

Pathways To Service Receipt: Modeling Parent Help-Seeking For Childhood Mental Health Problems, Nicholas D. Mian
Pathways To Service Receipt: Modeling Parent Help-Seeking For Childhood Mental Health Problems, Nicholas D. Mian
Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship
Understanding parent appraisals of child behavior problems and parental help-seeking can reduce unmet mental health needs. Research has examined individual contributors to help-seeking and service receipt, but use of structural equation modeling (SEM) is rare. SEM was used to examine parents’ appraisal of child behavior, thoughts about seeking help, and receipt of professional services in a diverse, urban sample (N = 189) recruited from women infant and children offices. Parents of children 11–60 months completed questionnaires about child behavior and development, parent well-being, help-seeking experiences, and service receipt. Child internalizing, externalizing, and dysregulation problems, language delay, and parent worry about …

Exporting Coal, Importing Pollution: Can The Consumption Of Coal Be Ignored Under Nepa And Sepa Analysis When Burned Overseas?, Ross Taylor
Washington Journal of Environmental Law & Policy
The Millennium Bulk Terminal in Longview, Washington, is one of several proposed locations along the west coast of the United States for a large export facility, which would allow large-scale exportation of domestic coal to Asia. The Millennium Bulk Terminal proposal has garnered significant opposition, yet attention is only recently turning to the specific concern over greenhouse gas emissions associated with such a project. This concern stems not just from operation of the facility or transportation to and from it but from the possibly damaging amount of emissions that would result from the coal’s ultimate consumption in Asia. Implicated by …

Global Dynamics Of Triangular Maps, Eduardo C. Balreira, Saber Elaydi, Rafael Luís
Global Dynamics Of Triangular Maps, Eduardo C. Balreira, Saber Elaydi, Rafael Luís
Mathematics Faculty Research
We consider continuous triangular maps on IN, where I is a compact interval in the Euclidean space R. We show, under some conditions, that the orbit of every point in a triangular map converges to a fixed point if and only if there is no periodic orbit of prime period two. As a consequence we obtain a result on global stability, namely, if there are no periodic orbits of prime period 2 and the triangular map has a unique fixed point, then the fixed point is globally asymptotically stable. We also discuss examples and applications of our …

Regulation Of Strand-Specific Processing In Human Pre-Mir-371 And Its Mouse Homologs, Jianting Shi
Regulation Of Strand-Specific Processing In Human Pre-Mir-371 And Its Mouse Homologs, Jianting Shi
Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences Theses and Dissertations
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs, known to regulate genes by inducing target mRNA degradation or translational repression. This regulatory function has been shown to assist developmental timing control and increasingly more evidence reveals some of the miRNAs may have tissue/cell type-specific function, showing the potential to assist cell differentiation. Mouse miR-290-295 cluster is embryonic stem cell (ESCs)-specific miRNA cluster and human miR-371-373 cluster has been verified to be its functional homolog. We have previously demonstrated that human pre-miR-371 is processed into multiple miRNA species, which represent the seeds of the mouse of miR-290-5p, miR-292-5p, miR-292-3p-iso2 and miR-293-3p. Deep sequencing …

Metabolic stability of the new antimalarial drug leads is determined using Human Liver Microsome (HLM) and specific cytochrome P450 enzyme (CYP2C8) taking the clinically used antimalarial drug chloroquine as a positive control. Experiment is done using standard methods. All the assays were conducted in 0.5 M phosphate buffer at pH 7.4. In general the metabolic reaction was initiated by adding 1 mM NADPH and 0.5 mg of enzyme. Incubations were done with time frequency of 0 hr, 1 hr, and 2 hrs at 37°C and the reactions were terminated by adding acetonitrile in the equal amounts of the assay mixture …

Beyond The Paint And Ink: Asar Oaxaca Resistance And Getting Up Arte Pal Pueblo, Mike L. Graham De La Rosa
Latin American Studies ETDs
This thesis aims to address the ways in Oaxacan street artists frame alternative realities within art and interviews about their art. Asamblea de Artistas Revolucionarios de Oaxaca or ASARO, is a revolutionary artist collective that currently works in Oaxaca Mexico. They place their art in publically accessible areas and comment on local, national and international social issues. Through ethnographic interviews and participant observation with members of ASARO along with critical discourse analysis of their images, I explore the ways getting up is accomplished. The combination of ethnographic field work paired with a critical approach deepens an understanding of what influences …

Biomechanical Evaluation Of Fracture Fixation Constructs Using A Variable-Angle Locked Periprosthetic Femur Plate System, Martin F. Hoffmann, Travis A. Burgers, James J. Mason, Bart O. Williams, Debra L. Sietsema
Mechanical Engineering Faculty Publications
Background
In the United States there are more than 230,000 total hip replacements annually, and periprosthetic femoral fractures occur in 0.1–4.5% of those patients. The majority of these fractures occur at the tip of the stem (Vancouver type B1). The purpose of this study was to compare the biomechanically stability and strength of three fixation constructs and identify the most desirable construct.
Methods
Fifteen medium adult synthetic femurs were implanted with a hip prosthesis and were osteotomized in an oblique plane at the level of the implant tip to simulate a Vancouver type B1 periprosthetic fracture. Fractures were fixed with …

Two Essays On Large Agricultural Producer Buying Behaviors, Jacqueline K. Holland
Open Access Theses
The trend of consolidation of large farms into high volume operations has continued over the past 30 years. Large farm management is a juggling act of a variety of biological processes, financial management, technology adaptation, and human resource development activities. This research looks to provide insights into the underlying management psychology of those large farmers to serve not only as a benchmark for other producers, but to provide customer information to agribusinesses so these firms can strengthen their relationships with their large farmer customers. The first part of this analysis will use Best-Worst modeling to examine five predetermined success factors …

The oomycete genus Aquastella is described to accommodate two new species of parasites of rotifers observed in Brooktrout Lake, New York State, USA. Three rotifer species – Keratella taurocephala,Polyarthra vulgaris, and Ploesoma truncatum – were infected, and this is the first report of oomycete infection in these species. Aquastella attenuata was specific to K. taurocephala and Aquastella aciculariswas specific to P. vulgaris and P. truncatum. The occurrence of infections correlated with peak host population densities and rotifers were infected in the upper layers of the water column. Sequencing of 18S rRNA and phylogenetic analysis of …

Artificial Neural Network Approach For Revealing Individuality, Group Membership And Age Information In Goat Kid Contact Calls, Livio Favaro, Elodie F. Briefer, Alan G. Mcelligott
Sentience Collection
Machine learning techniques are becoming an important tool for studying animal vocal communication. The goat (Capra hircus) is a very social species, in which vocal communication and recognition are important. We tested the reliability of a Multi-Layer Perceptron (feed-forward Artificial Neural Network, ANN) to automate the process of classification of calls according to individual identity, group membership and maturation in this species. Vocalisations were obtained from 10 half-sibling (same father but different mothers) goat kids, belonging to 3 distinct social groups. We recorded 157 contact calls emitted during first week, and 164 additional calls recorded from the same individuals at …

Male Brush-Turkeys Attempt Sexual Coercion In Unusual Circumstances, David A. Wells, Darryl N. Jones, David Bulger, Culum Brown
Reproductive Behavior Collection
Sexual coercion by males is generally understood to have three forms: forced copulation, harassment and intimidation. We studied Australian brush-turkeys, Alectura lathami, to determine whether some male behaviours towards females at incubation mounds could be classified as aggressive, whether males were attempting sexual coercion and, if so, whether the coercion was successful. We found that some male behaviours towards females were significantly more likely to be followed by the cessation of female mound activity, and hence could be classified as aggressive, while others were significantly more likely to be followed by the commencement of female mound activity, and hence could …

Website created by Angelina McKee to educate the public about water resource issues. Water is the basic unit of life, water resources are the basis for what societies and ecosystems are founded upon. Water shortages and droughts are more prevalent in our ever-changing world. It is no shock that there are discrepancies between various stockholders on either sides of the dry riverbed. This senior project resulted in the development of a website that addresses global water resources, water use in California, water conservation, and water allocation. The website informs the public on water resources and related issues and will hopefully …
