Increasing Serendipity Of Recommender System With Ranking Topic Model, Zhibo Xiao, Feng Che, Enuo Miao, Mingyu Lu
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
There are thousands of academic paper published each year, it is quite hard for researchers who enters a new field to discover relevant paper and novel paper to read, which we characterize as choice overload problem. Recommender system can help to alleviate the problem, but recommender system suffers from the intention gap problem which is the incapability of the system to accurately guess users’ intentions. We proposed a ranking topic model based semantic recommendation framework which helps to introduce serendipity to the system. First, the proposed ranking topic model reorders learnt topic distributions according to users’ intentions. Then, learnt ordered topics …

School of Natural Resources: Faculty Publications
Water diversions that extract fresh water for urban, industrial, and agricultural uses, as well as export to southern California, are prevalent throughout the Sacramento–San Joaquin watershed. Many water diversions are fitted with fish-exclusion screens designed to prevent fish from entrainment (i.e., being drawn in). The impact of fish screens on the behavior of migrating juvenile fishes remains largely unknown, especially for threatened species such as sturgeon. We placed individual juvenile green (Acipenser medirostris) or white (Acipenser transmontanus) sturgeon in a laboratory swimming flume in the presence of standard fish screens (2 mm bar spacing) at two …

We describe the expansion of a publicly available archive of downscaled climate and hydrology projections for the United States. Those studying or planning to adapt to future climate impacts demand downscaled climate model output for local or regional use. The archive we describe attempts to fulfill this need by providing data in several formats, selectable to meet user needs. Our archive has served as a resource for climate impacts modelers, water managers, educators, and others. Over 1,400 individuals have transferred more than 50 TB of data from the archive. In response to user demands, the archive has expanded from monthly …
Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
Rethinking Utopianism, International Relations Theory, And Marginalization Of Africa In Global Politics, Kwame B. Antwi-Boasiako
Faculty Publications
Many studies on utopianism tend to critique known political models such as capitalism, democracy, socialism, and dictatorship. While none of these models provide a perfect political environment, utopianism seems to be the answer to prevent all political abuses. From public administration point of view, the harmonious co-existence of all political models without any interference may help to conceptualise a potential change in our current hostile global political environment and limit the marginalisation of other societies as presented in the international relations literature. Modernisation theories, debatably, have assumed that the principles of modern political administration will become more important than other …

Making Room For Cooperative Innovation, Liza S. Vertinsky
Making Room For Cooperative Innovation, Liza S. Vertinsky
Florida State University Law Review
Patent law, created in response to a constitutional mandate to encourage innovation, may be discouraging important forms of cooperative innovation. Advances in technology have enabled new ways of pooling knowledge and computational capabilities, facilitating cooperation among many participants with complementary skills and motivations to collectively solve complex problems. But emerging models of cooperative innovation increasingly run into patent roadblocks.
Why might patent law sometimes thwart instead of support socially beneficial cooperative innovation? The problem lies in the tensions between the market-based incentives that patent law creates and the mechanisms that support emerging models of cooperative innovation. The complexity and cost …

Recent revelations have shown that almost all online activity and increasing amounts of offline activity are tracked using Big Data and data mining technologies. The ensuing debate has largely failed to consider an important consequence of mass surveillance: the obligation to provide access to information that might exonerate a criminal defendant. Although information technology can establish innocence—an ability that will only improve with technological advance—the fruits of mass surveillance have been used almost exclusively to convict. To address the imbalance and inform public dialogue, this Article develops the concept of “digital innocence” as a means of leveraging the tools of …

Eyes In The Sky: Linking Satellite Oceanography And Biotelemetry To Explore Habitat Selection By Basking Sharks, Tobey H. Curtis, Stephan I. Zeeman, Erin L. Summers, Steven X. Cadrin, Gregory B. Skomal
Marine Sciences Faculty Publications
Background: Satellite-based oceanographic data products are a valuable source of information on potential resource availability for marine species. Satellite oceanography data may be particularly useful in biotelemetry studies on marine species that feed at low trophic levels, such as zooplanktivorous whales, sharks, and rays. The basking shark, Cetorhinus maximus, is a well-documented zooplanktivore in the western North Atlantic, yet little is known of its movements and spatial ecology in this region. A combination of satellite tag technologies were used to describe basking shark movements with respect to concurrent satellite-observed oceanographic conditions in order to test for selection of these …

Open Access Theses
Based on Kolb Learning Style Inventory 4.0, the objectives of this research were to demonstrate the existence of hybrid learning styles and demonstrate the existence of dynamic learning styles between subject matters (mathematics and English). Understanding an individual's dynamic distribution of learning styles might be used to further improve the quality of instruction, learning, and educational materials. Optimizing the quality of instruction, learning, and educational materials is important because careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields are increasingly needed. Personalized learning has been identified as an area that could improve the quality of STEM education. Exploiting individuals learning …
Evolution Of Food Quality Demand In The Food Service Industry In China: The Case Of Duck, Rachel Alison Carnegie
Evolution Of Food Quality Demand In The Food Service Industry In China: The Case Of Duck, Rachel Alison Carnegie
Open Access Theses
Booming economic growth and rising consumer incomes have impacted food preferences and purchasing behavior in China. At the same time, several internationally publicized food safety incidents, particularly in the animal husbandry sector, have heightened awareness of and concern for food safety and quality in meat and dairy. Rising quality demand and safety concerns have been studied at length in the food retail sector, but also appear to be important in the food service industry. This research uses data from a survey of duck restaurant managers and consumers in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, and Guangzhou to determine preferences and willingness to pay …

Blood-Based Biomarkers For Traumatic Brain Injury: Evaluation Of Research Approaches, Available Methods And Potential Utility From The Clinician And Clinical Laboratory Perspectives, Frederick G. Strathmann, Stefanie Podlog (Nee Schulte), Kyle Goerl, David J. Petron
Athletic Training Collection
Blood-based biomarkers for traumatic brain injury (TBI) have been investigated and proposed for decades, yet the current clinical assessment of TBI is largely based on clinical symptoms that can vary widely amongst patients, and have significant overlap with unrelated disease states. A careful review of current treatment guidelines for TBI further highlights the potential utility of a blood-based TBI biomarker panel in augmenting clinical decision making. Numerous expert reviews on blood-based TBI biomarkers have been published but a close look at the methods used and the astonishing paucity of validation and quality control data has not been undertaken from the …

Characterization Of The Roles Of Blt1p In Fission Yeast Cytokinesis, John W. Goss, Sunhee Kim, Hannah Bledsoe, Thomas D. Pollard
Faculty Research and Scholarship
Spatial and temporal regulation of cytokinesis is essential for cell division, yet the mechanisms that control the formation and constriction of the contractile ring are incompletely understood. In the fission yeast Schizosaccharomyces pombe proteins that contribute to the cytokinetic contractile ring accumulate during interphase in nodes—precursor structures around the equatorial cortex. During mitosis, additional proteins join these nodes, which condense to form the contractile ring. The cytokinesis protein Blt1p is unique in being present continuously in nodes from early interphase through to the contractile ring until cell separation. Blt1p was shown to stabilize interphase nodes, but its functions later in …

The State, Parents, Schools, "Culture Wars", And Modern Technologies: Challenges Under The U.N. Convention On The Rights Of A Child, Nora V. Demleitner
Scholarly Articles
This paper focuses on some of the core principles of the U.N. Convention on the Rights of the Child and their application under U.S. state and federal law. While the United States has not ratified the Convention, it is a signatory. Many of the most intractable cultural issues in the United States involve children and their rights to participation, information, and decision-making. Frequently, primary and secondary education presents a fertile battle ground for “cultural clashes” between parents, schools, and state officials. In the private context, both U.S. law and the U.N. Convention have adopted the “best interests of the child” …
Asymptotic Stability Criteria For A Class Of Impulsive Functional Differential Systems, Martin J. Bohner, Ivanka M. Stamova
Asymptotic Stability Criteria For A Class Of Impulsive Functional Differential Systems, Martin J. Bohner, Ivanka M. Stamova
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper, a class of impulsive functional differential systems is investigated. It is proved that for the asymptotic stability of the zero solution of the system considered, it is sufficient that only some components of the right-hand side of the system are bounded for unbounded values of time. For functional differential equations without impulses, similar results were proved by Burton and Makay using Lyapunov–Krasovskii functionals. The goal of this paper is to prove these criteria for a class of impulsive functional differential systems with variable impulsive perturbations applying the Lyapunov–Razumikhin technique.

Modelling And Design Of A Tridimensional Compliant Leg For Bioloid Quadruped, Mafalda Couto, Cristina P. Santos, Jose Machado
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In the growing field of rehabilitation robotics, the modelling of a real robot is a complex and passionate challenge. On the crossing point of mechanics, physics and computer-science, the development of a complete 3D model involves the knowledge of the different physic properties, for an accurate simulation. In this paper, it is proposed the design of an efficient three-dimensional model of the quadruped Bioloid robot setting segmented pantographic legs, in order to actively retract the quadruped legs during locomotion and minimizing large forces due to shocks, such that the robot is able to safely and dynamically interact with the user …

The Control Of Population Tumor Cells Via Compensatory Effect, Janar J. Yermekbayeva, Beisenbi A.Mamyrbek, Arystan N. Omarov, Gulnar A. Abitova
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
Mathematical models and simulation studies are powerful tools to investigate dynamic properties of complex systems. Complex models with constant parameters often approach a steady state. In this research, we present an overview of mathematical approaches applied to the description of control population tumor cells. We are researching the influence of D-factor on tumor cells population. We called it compensatory effect. There is Vaccination as biological analogue of the compensator effect. D-factor is presented as catastrophe theory’s fold form. Further, numeric results of model experiments are showing that this approach is positive efficient.

Numerical Solution Of Fractional Benney Equation, Mehmet Ali Akinlar, Aydin Secer, Aydin Secer, Mustafa Bayram
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper we propose a new solution technique for numerical solution of fractional Benney equation, a fourth degree nonlinear fractional partial differential equation with broad range of applications. The method could be described as a hybrid technique which uses advantages of both wavelets and operational matrices. Having applied the present method, fractional Benney equation is converted into a matrix equation, which is easy to solve. To the best of our knowledge, the fractional Benney equation has not been solved with any numerical or analytical method in the literature. Solving this equation numerically and investigating the applicability of the wavelets …

Stability, Synchronization Control And Numerical Solution Of Fractional Shimizu–Morioka Dynamical System, Mehmet Ali Akinlar, Aydin Secer, Mustafa Bayram
Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences
In this paper we concern with asymptotic stability, synchronization control and numerical solution of incommensurate order fractional Shimizu–Morioka dynamical system. Firstly we prove the existence and uniqueness of the solutions via a new theorem. After finding steady–state points, we obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for the asymptotic stability of the Shimizu–Morioka system. We also study the synchronization control where we employ master–slave synchronization scheme. Finally, employing Adams– Bashforth–Moulton’s technique we solve the Shimizu–Morioka system numerically. To the best of our knowledge, there exist not any study about analysis of chaotic dynamics of fractional Shimizu–Morioka system in the literature. In this sense …
