Stability Of Paraffin-Insulated Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes, Maxwell H. Kwakwah May 2026

Stability Of Paraffin-Insulated Nitrogen-Doped Carbon Fiber Ultramicroelectrodes, Maxwell H. Kwakwah

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Nitrogen-doped carbon materials can facilitate the reduction oxygen-oxygen bonds, a key step in electroreduction of both O2 (an important reaction in energy applications) and H₂O₂ (an important reaction in sensing and biosensing). Our lab previously demonstrated that thermal decomposition of urea in the presence of carbon fiber (CF) results in an N-doped carbon material that exhibits good electrocatalytic properties for H₂O₂ reduction. However, previous methods of insulating single N-doped CF via laser heating of borosilicate capillaries and epoxy to prepare ultramicroelectrodes (UMEs) seemed to adversely affect surface nitrogen contents and electrocatalytic properties. More recent work that utilized paraffin to …

Urban Illumination And Circadian Disruption: Examining Artificial Light At Night, Caitlin Mcmasters May 2026

Urban Illumination And Circadian Disruption: Examining Artificial Light At Night, Caitlin Mcmasters

Theses

Artificial light at night is increasingly prevalent in dense urban environments, yet it remains unclear how often typical city lighting conditions likely exceed recommended nighttime limits for residential circadian health. This thesis evaluates nighttime light exposure in two contrasting urban districts, Back Bay in Boston and Times Square in New York City, using satellite derived nighttime radiance, GIS based urban morphology, and documented lighting infrastructure characteristics. Rather than relying on calibrated photometric simulations, the study employs a qualitative, evidence based comparative approach to assess relative façade exposure and interpret conditions against established benchmarks, including the WELL Building Standard and ILP …

A Sharper, Stronger Reality: Rememory In Octavia Butler's Kindred, Rachael E. Vargas

Research Papers

This research paper applies epigenetic research and Toni Morrison’s concept of “rememory” to analyze Octavia Butler’s novel, Kindred. This research demonstrates that, through the use of rememory, form, and genre, Butler creates an allegory for epigenetic trauma inheritance within the novel. Dana’s experiences of physical injury disablement serve to exemplify one of the many lived aftermaths of American Chattel Slavery experienced by DACS.

“Healing Symbols For Trauma”: The Role Of Art In Healing From Psychological Trauma And Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Engaging Carl Gustav Jung’S Appropriation Of The Spiritual Exercises Of St. Ignatius Of Loyola, Ricardo Sebastian Nogueiro May 2026

“Healing Symbols For Trauma”: The Role Of Art In Healing From Psychological Trauma And Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (Ptsd) Engaging Carl Gustav Jung’S Appropriation Of The Spiritual Exercises Of St. Ignatius Of Loyola, Ricardo Sebastian Nogueiro

Jesuit School of Theology Dissertations

In society individuals experience trauma at least once in their lifetime which makes the experience of trauma pervasive. This thesis explores the role that art forms play in psychological and spiritual healing from trauma and PTSD. Psychological trauma and PTSD have become more prevalent in society with reliance on largely psychological approaches to healing while neglecting the spiritual dimension. This study proposes a complementary method to Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) for psycho-spiritual healing through an integration of art, psychoanalysis, and Christian spirituality, one which restores personal agency. Engaging the trauma afflicted with art forms can serve as a medium for …

Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price May 2026

Long Term Changes In Elk Group Size And Composition (2002-2023) In Relation To Wolf Hunting Sucess, Kennedy Price

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Elk (Cervus elaphus) in Yellowstone National Park exist within a predator-prey system shaped by long-term interactions with wolves (Canis lupus). This predator-prey system represents an important model for understanding how predation influences ungulate behavior and social organization. Predators affect prey behavior through direct and indirect interactions and may cause long-term changes. What this study strives to answer is if predator success can have long term effects on prey grouping behavior and age-sex structure. In a previous study, wolves were found to be most successful hunting medium sized group of elk (20-49 individuals) in Yellowstone National Park. …

Developing Training And Streamlining Training Management Process For Smithfield Fire Department Employees In Aha, Naemt, And Aap Certifications, Michael Christopher Popa Ii May 2026

Developing Training And Streamlining Training Management Process For Smithfield Fire Department Employees In Aha, Naemt, And Aap Certifications, Michael Christopher Popa Ii

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

The rapid operational expansion of the Smithfield Fire Department and EMS (SFD)—marked by a 300% increase in call volume and a transition to a fully professional, independent paramedic service—exposed critical systemic inefficiencies in clinical preparedness and personnel credentialing. This project addresses the "HALO Paradox," wherein high-acuity, low-occurrence emergencies require expert-level proficiency that cannot be maintained through call volume alone. Historically, the agency relied on fragmented, external continuing education (CE) that incurred high financial costs, lacked equipment standardization, and created administrative bottlenecks during biannual recertification cycles. The central objective of this capstone was to engineer a sustainable, in-house training infrastructure that …

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Host: Fleas And The History Of Pikas In North America, Josh Pletcher May 2026

The Hitchhiker's Guide To The Host: Fleas And The History Of Pikas In North America, Josh Pletcher

All NMU Master's Theses

Parasite phylogenetics can offer windows into the cryptic evolutionary history of hosts, often highlighting events that are not recorded by the phylogenetics of the host. Pikas (small lagomorphs) host a diverse parasite community comprising endoparasites (e.g., coccidians, nematodes, and cestodes) and ectoparasites (e.g., fleas and mites). Phylogenetic analysis of pika endoparasites has revealed pikas evolved in Asia and colonized North America in two waves, and that contact between these two pika lineages allowed parasites to be transferred from one lineage to another and to survive the extinction of their original host. To uncover these cryptic histories, understanding the biogeography of …

Behind The Smile: A Qualitative Study On Dentist Burnout And Workplace Satisfaction In Cache Valley, Luke Thomas Hatch May 2026

Behind The Smile: A Qualitative Study On Dentist Burnout And Workplace Satisfaction In Cache Valley, Luke Thomas Hatch

This qualitative research study examined satisfaction, stressors, and burnout among dental professionals in Cache Valley, Utah. Eight practitioners at various points in their careers were interviewed with a range of specialties including general dentistry (n = 3), pedodontics (n = 3), oral and facial surgery (n = 1), and orthodontics (n = 1). Analysis of the interviews showed that level of clinical autonomy was a primary factor influencing burnout levels. Stress levels in more experienced practitioners and owners tended to be lower than those who worked in multiple practices (multi-doctor) or with corporations. Individuals in these environments reported higher levels …

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles May 2026

Nutrition Teaching Methods In Communities, Emery Fayth Rowles

Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects

Community is a vital part of non-formal education. A sense of, longing for, and responsibility towards community draws individuals to participate in local services and classes. Community has been shown to have positive impacts on learning, self efficacy, and health.

Many of the techniques used in education mirror techniques used in building community—such as the use of small group discussions and cultural sensitivity—but with distinct differences in mindset. Most educational approaches see the acquisition and use of knowledge as the key purpose of the program and evaluate participants on an individual basis. This approach makes sense for programs meant to …

Ccr5 Sulfopeptide Library And O-Glycosylated Amino Acids As Chemical Tools For Probing Chemokine Receptor Recognition, Mostafa Mohammed Mohammed Ali Eldeen May 2026

Ccr5 Sulfopeptide Library And O-Glycosylated Amino Acids As Chemical Tools For Probing Chemokine Receptor Recognition, Mostafa Mohammed Mohammed Ali Eldeen

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Chemokine-receptor interactions play a central role in immune regulation and disease pathogenesis, particularly through CCR5, a receptor engaged by chemokines such as CCL3, CCL4, and CCL5. Post-translational modifications of the CCR5 N-terminus—including tyrosine sulfation at positions 3, 10, 14, and 15, and O-glycosylation at serine 6—critically modulate chemokine recognition and selectivity. However, the impact of specific sulfation patterns on chemokine binding and the synergistic effects of combined sulfation and glycosylation remain incompletely understood. This thesis presents a two-project chemical approach to systematically investigate CCR5 post-translational modifications. In Project 1, a comprehensive 16-member library of CCR5???? sulfopeptides representing all possible combinations …

A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling May 2026

A Revised Quantifier Variance And Its Implications On Vagueness, Isaac Alexander Huling

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

This paper argues that the Special Composition Question has no substantive answer, not because compositional talk is empty but because the physical structure it tracks does not have the form that would privilege a unique answer. The argument accepts Sider’s methodological premise that the world must provide structure beyond description if ontological vocabulary is to mean anything, and deploys that apparatus against his specific application of it to composition. Constraint processes among a system’s parts – the forces and interactions that hold rigid bodies together, maintain organisms, bind solar systems – satisfy every condition Lewis required of reference magnets. They …

Compassion In A Warrior Culture: Emotionally Supportive Leadership Among U.S. Military Veterans A Phenomenological Study, Peter Hofmann Phd May 2026

Compassion In A Warrior Culture: Emotionally Supportive Leadership Among U.S. Military Veterans A Phenomenological Study, Peter Hofmann Phd

Leadership Studies

This qualitative phenomenological study examines how U.S. military veterans with leadership experience describe and make sense of emotionally supportive leadership within the context of a traditionally hierarchical and stoic military culture. Drawing on semi-structured interviews with veterans across service branches, the study explores how participants interpret relational leadership behaviors involving care, responsibility, and responsiveness to others’ suffering, and how these behaviors are shaped, constrained, or legitimized within a warrior-oriented institutional context. Particular attention is given to veterans who self-identify with service-connected conditions, as their experiences illuminate how leadership identity and emotional regulation evolve during and after military service. Participants consistently …

Population Structure And Connectivity Of Atlantic Nurse Sharks (Ginglymostoma Cirratum) In The Bahamas And Outlying Areas, Baylie A. Fadool May 2026

Population Structure And Connectivity Of Atlantic Nurse Sharks (Ginglymostoma Cirratum) In The Bahamas And Outlying Areas, Baylie A. Fadool

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Understanding animal ecosystem dynamics and behavior at the individual and population levels is essential for identifying life-history patterns and important areas for management and conservation. Marine fish species often face minimal geographic barriers to movement, but environmental (temperature, salinity, current) or intrinsic barriers (philopatry, site fidelity) can dictate gene flow. Atlantic nurse sharks (Ginglymostoma cirratum) are an International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) listed ‘vulnerable’ species and present a unique opportunity to investigate patterns of population structure and connectivity in large-bodied sharks. They are benthic and display reproductive philopatry, with recent work suggesting they have the capacity …

Exploring Student Sensemaking During A Collaborative Biology Lab, Rebecca Kollipara May 2026

Exploring Student Sensemaking During A Collaborative Biology Lab, Rebecca Kollipara

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Collaborative learning environments offer valuable opportunities for students to construct scientific understanding through dialogue, yet the conditions that support sustained conceptual reasoning in group settings remain incompletely understood. While prior research has identified discourse moves associated with productive collaboration, less attention has been paid to how those moves function together across turns and conceptual boundaries, or how individual student characteristics shape their emergence. This thesis examines collaborative sensemaking in an undergraduate General Biology II course, drawing on two complementary analyses of student discourse during a bryophyte life-cycle modeling activity.

Chapter 1 investigates how student groups participated in sensemaking and how …

Gaining Mussel: Evaluating Reintroduction Success Of Native Freshwater Mussels In Nebraska And Eastern Wyoming, Travis A. Moore May 2026

Gaining Mussel: Evaluating Reintroduction Success Of Native Freshwater Mussels In Nebraska And Eastern Wyoming, Travis A. Moore

School of Natural Resources: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Freshwater mussels are one of the most imperiled groups of organisms in North America, with over two-thirds of species considered threatened, endangered, or of special concern. These long-lived bivalves are essential to stream ecosystems, acting as filter feeders that improve water quality and as indicators of aquatic health. In Nebraska and Wyoming, native mussel populations have declined sharply due to habitat modification, pollution, and reduced connectivity. Two species of particular concern are the Plain Pocketbook Lampsilis cardium, listed as Tier I at-risk in Nebraska, and the Fatmucket Lampsilis siliquoidea, a Tier II at-risk species. In response, state agencies …

The Impact Of Glucose Exposure On Organic Cation Transporters (Oct) Function In A Corneal Epithelial Cell Line, David A. Garza May 2026

The Impact Of Glucose Exposure On Organic Cation Transporters (Oct) Function In A Corneal Epithelial Cell Line, David A. Garza

Theses & Dissertations

Organic cation transporters (OCT) facilitate the movement of neurochemicals and medications, contribute to the removal of cellular waste, and facilitate neuronal communication. Three subtypes of these high-capacity, low-affinity transporters (OCT1, OCT2, and OCT3) are differently expressed in peripheral tissues such as the liver, kidneys, as well as the central nervous system. OCTs are also expressed in ocular tissues. Chronic hyperglycemia is a complication commonly associated with diabetes that can lead to ocular diseases such as diabetic keratopathy, which affects the cornea. In this project, we expose immortalized human corneal epithelial cells (HCE-S) to various glucose concentrations to study their impact …

If It’S A Fit, Perhaps They’Ll Stick: An Examination Of Black Women Teachers, Perceptions Of Fit With Their Schools, And Their Retention In American Public Schools, Taylor M. Young May 2026

If It’S A Fit, Perhaps They’Ll Stick: An Examination Of Black Women Teachers, Perceptions Of Fit With Their Schools, And Their Retention In American Public Schools, Taylor M. Young

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Capstones

This dissertation examines how perceived person-organization (PO) fit between Black women teachers (BWTs) and characteristics of their respective schools influence their intention to remain at their current school. Using quantitative methods, this study explores how these characteristics predict the likelihood of retention. The study centered (n = 85) BWTs within a full sample of women teachers (N = 125). The findings revealed that perceived PO fit with colleagues, teaching assignment, and student population predicted a higher likelihood of remaining at their current school for both BWTs and the full sample. The study intends to inform recruitment and retention efforts for …

Honeybee Colony Response To Probiotic Supplementation And Grazing Practices, Katya M. Busenitz May 2026

Honeybee Colony Response To Probiotic Supplementation And Grazing Practices, Katya M. Busenitz

Department of Entomology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Honeybee health is a complicated issue. Studies were conducted to scale honeybee (Apis mellifera) health from the microbiome to the landscape. Colony health parameters were measured in response to probiotic administration. Colony capped brood production, colony summer weight gain, and Varroa mite incidence were measured. I found that applications of over-the-counter probiotics did not improve the measured parameters of honeybee health compared to a control group. Results suggest that probiotic application was not beneficial but positive benefits may depend on application method, brand, or strain of probiotics used. I also examined how colony health metrics responded to different …

Beyond The Switch: Identifying Gli2-Associated Secretory Targets For Igm Regulation In Waldenström’S Macroglobulinemia, Trevor Charles Chapman May 2026

Beyond The Switch: Identifying Gli2-Associated Secretory Targets For Igm Regulation In Waldenström’S Macroglobulinemia, Trevor Charles Chapman

Master's Theses and Capstones

Waldenström’s Macroglobulinemia (WM) is a rare non-Hodgkin lymphoma characterized by the increased presence of monoclonal IgM circulating in the blood and the infiltration of lymphoplasmacytic cells into the bone marrow. WM cells are heterogeneous, sharing features of both B-lymphocytes and plasma cells while not being able to terminally differentiate. Our labs’ previous work established that inhibiting and knocking down the GLI2 transcription factor effectively reduces IgM secretion in three different WM cell lines. This observed phenotype was discovered to operate through IL-6Rα signaling but whether IgM was regulated transcriptionally was not assessed. GLI2 was initially hypothesized to regulate IgM production …

Conserved Spatial Proximity And Immune-Linked Evolution Of Lncrnas From Protein-Coding Genes In Vertebrates, Sahar Jamialahmadi May 2026

Conserved Spatial Proximity And Immune-Linked Evolution Of Lncrnas From Protein-Coding Genes In Vertebrates, Sahar Jamialahmadi

Master's Theses and Capstones

Long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) are widespread components of vertebrate genomes, yet theevolutionary principles governing their genomic positioning, origin, and functional associations remain incompletely understood. Here, we performed a comparative genomic analysis across 96 vertebrate species to investigate the spatial relationship between lncRNAs and protein-coding genes, their evolutionary trajectories within gene families, and their functional and genomic contexts.

We show that lncRNAs are consistently positioned in close proximity to protein-codinggenes across vertebrates, with distance distributions significantly deviating from random genomic placement in all species examined. Despite this non-random organization, genome-wide lncRNA–mRNA distance distributions were highly conserved across species. Ancestral state reconstruction …

Unified Deep Learning Techniques For Spatial Detection And Temporal Forecasting Across Visual Domains, John Olawale Olamofe May 2026

Unified Deep Learning Techniques For Spatial Detection And Temporal Forecasting Across Visual Domains, John Olawale Olamofe

All Dissertations

This dissertation proposed a unified deep learning framework for spatial detection and temporal forecasting across visual domains, designed to address limited supervision, class imbalance, and scale variability. The framework was structured around four complementary principles: Domain-Aware Input Rebalancing, Representation-Centric Learning, Diversity-Driven Robustness, and Transfer Across Scale and Modality, which together enabled robust visual representation learning across heterogeneous data sources.

Domain-Aware Input Rebalancing mitigates non-uniform and sparse data distributions by actively reshaping inputs before learning via class-aware augmentation, sampling, resolution manipulation, and super-resolution. This principle underpins object detection in overhead satellite imagery (xView), dense urban aerial scenes (CADOT), temporally sparse NDVI …
