Diversity And The Composition Of Fatty Acids Of Lipolytic Bacteria Isolated From Soil And Aquatic Sediment In A Forest And On An Oil Palm Plantation, Marini Wijayanti, Anja Meryandini, Aris Tri Wahyudi, Munti Yuhana
Makara Journal of Science
The specific bacteria in forests and on oil palm plantations are lipolytic bacteria. Their enzymes have been applied in the agro-aquaculture, food, detergent, pharmaceutical, dairy, and biodiesel-biokerosene industries. This study describes the diversity of cultivable lipolytic bacteria from soil and aquatic sediment in a forest and on an oil palm plantation and their fatty acid products. Soil samples used in this research were obtained from topsoil in a lowland forest and on an oil palm plantation and from sediments in fresh water near these sites. The forest is located in Bukit Duabelas National Park, and the oil palm plantation is …

Phase Diagrams And Current Density Profiles Of The Totally Asymmetric Simple Exclusion Process In Two Dimensions, For A Three-Way Junction, Rini Septiana, Annisa Indriawati, Wipsar Sunu Brams Dwandaru
Makara Journal of Science
This study explores a dynamical model called the totally asymmetric simple exclusion process (TASEP) in two dimensions (2D). An open boundary condition is specified for the model, and sequential updating dynamics are used as the dynamical rule. The system studied is a discrete 2D system of lattice sites, which are modified into a three-way junction. Two cases are considered: a three-way junction with two entrances and one exit, and a three-way junction with one entrance and two exits. The density and current density of the system are determined numerically, such that a phase diagram is obtained. The continuity equation describing …

Characterization Of The Ren4 Resistance Locus Through The Integration Of De Novo Assembly, Expression Analysis, And Genotyping-By-Sequencing Data, Jacquelyn A. Lillis
Theses
Internationally, grape breeders have been using traditional breeding approaches to introgress Ren4 resistance against powdery mildew (Erysiphe necator) from a wild Asian grapevine (Vitis romanetii) into cultivated grapevines (V. vinifera). The goal of this work was to use genomic tools to identify candidate genes underlying the Ren4 resistance phenotype. Full- and half-sib families segregating for Ren4 resistance were analyzed using Genotyping-by-Sequencing (GBS), and 70 GBS tags were identified as specifically tagging the Ren4 locus. These tags were used to identify BAC clones at the locus, and a scaffolded BAC assembly was generated using Velvet and SSPACE. This assembly spanned 13.7Mb, …

Neurospora Wc-1 Recruits Swi/Snf To Remodel Frequency And Initiate A Circadian Cycle, Bin Wang, Arminja N. Kettenbach, Scott A. Gerber, Jennifer J. Loros, Jay C. Dunlap
Dartmouth Scholarship
In the negative feedback loop comprising the Neurospora circadian oscillator, the White Collar Complex (WCC) formed from White Collar-1 (WC-1) and White Collar-2 (WC-2) drives transcription of the circadian pacemaker gene frequency (frq). Although FRQ-dependent repression of WCC has been extensively studied, the mechanism by which the WCC initiates a circadian cycle remains elusive. Structure/function analysis of WC-1 eliminated domains previously thought to transactivate frq expression but instead identified amino acids 100–200 as essential for frq circadian expression. A proteomics-based search for coactivators with WCC uncovered the SWI/SNF (SWItch/Sucrose NonFermentable) complex: SWI/SNF interacts with WCC in vivo and …

A Distinct Tethering Step Is Vital For Vacuole Membrane Fusion, Michael Zick, William T. Wickner
A Distinct Tethering Step Is Vital For Vacuole Membrane Fusion, Michael Zick, William T. Wickner
Dartmouth Scholarship
Past experiments with reconstituted proteoliposomes, employing assays that infer membrane fusion from fluorescent lipid dequenching, have suggested that vacuolar SNAREs alone suffice to catalyze membrane fusion in vitro. While we could replicate these results, we detected very little fusion with the more rigorous assay of lumenal compartment mixing. Exploring the discrepancies between lipid-dequenching and content-mixing assays, we surprisingly found that the disposition of the fluorescent lipids with respect to SNAREs had a striking effect. Without other proteins, the association of SNAREs in trans causes lipid dequenching that cannot be ascribed to fusion or hemifusion. Tethering of the SNARE-bearing proteoliposomes was …

Monographs of the Western North American Naturalist
The floristic connection between the mediterranean region of Baja California and the Pacific islands of Alta and Baja California provides insight into the history and origin of the California Floristic Province. We present updated species lists for all California Floristic Province islands and demonstrate the disjunct distributions of 26 taxa between the Baja California and the California Channel Islands. These 26 plant taxa are found among the 16 Pacific islands without occurring on the intervening mainland of Alta California. Separate species lists for each island group (8 California Channel Islands and 8 Baja California Islands) were compiled. These lists were …

Angiopoietin-1, Angiopoietin-2 And Bicarbonate As Diagnostic Biomarkers In Children With Severe Sepsis, Kun Wang, Vineet Bhandari, John S. Giuliano, Corey S. O′Hern, Mark D. Shattuck, Michael Kirby
Publications and Research
Severe pediatric sepsis continues to be associated with high mortality rates in children. Thus, an important area of biomedical research is to identify biomarkers that can classify sepsis severity and outcomes. The complex and heterogeneous nature of sepsis makes the prospect of the classification of sepsis severity using a single biomarker less likely. Instead, we employ machine learning techniques to validate the use of a multiple biomarkers scoring system to determine the severity of sepsis in critically ill children. The study was based on clinical data and plasma samples provided by a tertiary care center's Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) …

Understanding Factors Determining Early Termination From A Government Assistance Program For Maternal And Child Health: The Special Supplemental Nutrition Program For Women, Infants And Children (Wic), Anthony Dominic Panzera
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this dissertation is to understand why individuals enrolled in the Special Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants and Children (WIC) fail to retrieve food vouchers, miss WIC appointments, and become inactive in program components. In Kentucky, mothers who fail to pick up food instruments for 60 days are automatically terminated from the program. The specific research questions that guided this study are: (1) Which segments of enrollees are at greatest and least risks of nonparticipation in the WIC program? (2) How do predisposing, enabling and need characteristics impact WIC nonparticipation among eligible mothers? (3) How do WIC …

The Status Of Fishes In The Missouri River, Nebraska: Shovelnose Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus Platorynchus), Kirk D. Steffensen, Sam Stukel, Dane A. Shuman
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
The Shovelnose Sturgeon Scaphirhynchus platorynchus remains the most abundant riverine sturgeon species in North American despite the anthropogenic modifications that have occurred throughout their historic range; however, their populations have declined throughout Nebraska since the construction of Fort Randall and Gavins Point Dams. Therefore, the objective of this study was to present the current status of Shovelnose Sturgeon in the Missouri River along Nebraska’s border. Data was acquired from 2003 to 2012 from all reaches of the Missouri River along Nebraska’s eastern border. Catch rates of Shovelnose Sturgeon increased in a downstream trend and were highest in the reach below …

The Status Of Fishes In The Missouri River, Nebraska: Pallid Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus Albus), Kirk D. Steffensen, Dane A. Shuman, Robert A. Klumb, Sam Stukel
Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies
Anthropogenic alterations to the Missouri River have placed the Pallid Sturgeon (Scaphirhynchus albus) population in jeopardy and contributed to their listing as an endangered species. Pallid sturgeon were always less common than the sympatric Shovelnose Sturgeon (S. platorynchus); however, Pallid Sturgeon seemed to be more affected by river alterations as the river sturgeon ratio has become more skewed towards Shovelnose Sturgeon. Shortly after listing, population augmentation with hatchery produced Pallid Sturgeon began to supplement the diminishing wild population. Therefore, the objective of this study was to present the current population status of the Pallid Sturgeon in …

Colonization Of Onions By Endophytic Fungi And Their Impacts On The Biology Of Thrips Tabaci, Alexander M. Muvea, Rainer Meyhöfer, Sevgan Subramanian, Hans Michael Poehling, Sunday Ekesi, Nguya K. Maniania
All Peer-Reviewed Publications
Endophytic fungi, which live within host plant tissues without causing any visible symptom of infection, are important mutualists that mediate plant-herbivore interactions. Thrips tabaci (Lindeman) is one of the key pests of onion, Allium cepa L., an economically important agricultural crop cultivated worldwide. However, information on endophyte colonization of onions, and their impacts on the biology of thrips feeding on them, is lacking. We tested the colonization of onion plants by selected fungal endophyte isolates using two inoculation methods. The effects of inoculated endophytes on T. tabaci infesting onion were also examined. Seven fungal endophytes used in our study were …

Objective: RGS9 is a member of the family of Regulators of G-Protein Signaling (RGS) proteins defined by the presence of an RGS domain which can accelerate the GTPase-activity of G protein Gα subunits. An insertion/deletion (I/D) polymorphism of the nucleotide sequence TTTCT (rs3215227) has been identified in the human RGS9 gene, which matches the consensus high affinity binding motif for the ubiquitously expressed RNA binding Polypyrimidine Tract Binding Protein (PTB). In this study, we evaluate the genetic association and functional relevance of this polymorphism in type 2 diabetes and obesity.

Phylogeny Of Courtship And Male-Male Combat Behavior In Snakes, Phil Senter, Shannon M. Harris, Danielle L. Kent
Phylogeny Of Courtship And Male-Male Combat Behavior In Snakes, Phil Senter, Shannon M. Harris, Danielle L. Kent
College of Health, Science, and Technology
Methodology/Principal Findings: From the literature on courtship and male-male combat in snakes we chose 33 behaviors to analyze. We plotted the 33 behaviors onto a phylogenetic tree to determine whether phylogenetic patterns were discernible. We found that phylogenetic patterns are discernible for some behaviors but not for others. For behaviors with discernible phylogenetic patterns, we used the fossil record to determine minimum ages for the addition of each behavior to the courtship and combat behavioral repertoire of each snake clade.

Noncompressible truncal hemorrhage and brain injury currently account for most early mortality of warfighters on the battlefield. There is no effective treatment for noncompressible truncal hemorrhage, other than rapid evacuation to a surgical facility. The availability of an effective field treatment for noncompressible truncal hemorrhage could increase the number of warfighters salvaged from this frequently-lethal scenario. Our intent was to develop a porcine model of noncompressible truncal hemorrhage with a ,50% one-hour mortality so that we could develop new treatments for this difficult problem. Normovolemic normothermic domestic swine (barrows, 3 months old, 34–36 kg) underwent one of three injury types …
