Applying Novel Tree-Based Frameworks To Big Data For Classification Of Heart Failure Patients And Prediction Of Clinical Responses, Yan Zhang, Nicholas Downing, Emily Bucholz, Suganthi Balasubramanian, Shu-Xia Li, Tara Liptak, Harlan Krumholz, Mark Gerstein Sep 2014

Applying Novel Tree-Based Frameworks To Big Data For Classification Of Heart Failure Patients And Prediction Of Clinical Responses, Yan Zhang, Nicholas Downing, Emily Bucholz, Suganthi Balasubramanian, Shu-Xia Li, Tara Liptak, Harlan Krumholz, Mark Gerstein

Yale Day of Data

Over 5 million Americans suffer from heart failure, a condition with a 5-year survival that eclipses all cancers apart from that of lung cancer. Conventional understanding of heart failure is simplistic: it is viewed as a single syndrome, despite real heterogeneity. In addition, models predicting outcomes focus on dichotomous results, like 30-day readmission. A novel approach to classification of heart failure may improve our ability to target interventions, improve patient experiences, and predict outcomes.

The Healthcare Cost and Utilization Project is a family of administrative claims databases that describes patient demographics, comorbidities, procedures, acute care utilization and outcomes, such as …

Early Life Environment, Fertility And Age Of Menarche: A Test Of Life History Predictions Using A Longitudinal Assessment Of Adversity Perception And Economic Status, Dorsa Amir, Matthew R. Jordan, Richard G. Bribiescas Sep 2014

Early Life Environment, Fertility And Age Of Menarche: A Test Of Life History Predictions Using A Longitudinal Assessment Of Adversity Perception And Economic Status, Dorsa Amir, Matthew R. Jordan, Richard G. Bribiescas

Yale Day of Data

Perceptions of early life environmental adversity can affect the timing of life history transitions and investment in reproductive effort. These effects are well documented in non-human organisms, but have been challenging to test in humans. Here we present evidence of the effects of variables associated with extrinsic mortality and morbidity on reproductive effort in a contemporary American population. Using a longitudinal database that sampled participants (N ≥ 1,579) at four points during adolescence and early adulthood, variables reflective of perceptions of adversity and risk were significantly associated with age of menarche and early adult fertility. While other factors related to …

Exurban Residents’ Perceptions Of Naturally Returning Predators: Connecticut Case Study, Margaret E. Sackrider, Susan G. Clark, Isaac M. Ortega Sep 2014

Exurban Residents’ Perceptions Of Naturally Returning Predators: Connecticut Case Study, Margaret E. Sackrider, Susan G. Clark, Isaac M. Ortega

Yale Day of Data

As a result of reforestation, growth of exurban areas and wildlife adaptation, it is believed that the public is currently encountering more human-wildlife conflicts than ever before. The key to balancing wildlife conservation and human development is understanding the dynamic relationship between humans and carnivores. Specifically, gaining insight into the complexity of this relationship will aide in the creation of more effective conservation policy and outreach.

Reforestation throughout Connecticut has supported a tremendous population growth of pray species and subsequently the growth of predator populations including coyotes, Canis latrans, and black bears, Ursus americanus. According to some biologists, …

Molecular Mechanisms Of Heart Valve And Skeletal Muscle Development And Disease, Margaret E. Benny Klimek Sep 2014

Molecular Mechanisms Of Heart Valve And Skeletal Muscle Development And Disease, Margaret E. Benny Klimek

Open Access Dissertations

Heart valves function to provide unidirectional blood flow during each cardiac cycle. The development of the heart valves from embryonic stages is a highly regulated process involving many signaling pathways in order to provide the proper extracellular matrix components in the trilaminar structure. When these processes are dysregulated, disease can persist in the valves. Here we examined additional levels of regulation in the heart valves at the level of miRNAs and phosphate homeostasis. There are many studies examining miRNA regulation in the heart, however, there is little knowledge about which miRNAs are expressed in the heart valves during development, maturation, …

Integrating The Public In Mosquito Management: Active Education By Community Peers Can Lead To Significant Reduction In Peridomestic Container Mosquito Habitats, Kristen Healy, George Hamilton, Taryn Crepeau, Sean Healy, Isik Unlu, Ary Farajollahi, Dina M. Fonseca Sep 2014

Integrating The Public In Mosquito Management: Active Education By Community Peers Can Lead To Significant Reduction In Peridomestic Container Mosquito Habitats, Kristen Healy, George Hamilton, Taryn Crepeau, Sean Healy, Isik Unlu, Ary Farajollahi, Dina M. Fonseca

Faculty Publications

Mosquito species that utilize peridomestic containers for immature development are commonly aggressive human biters, and because they often reach high abundance, create significant nuisance. One of these species, the Asian tiger mosquito Aedes albopictus, is an important vector of emerging infectious diseases, such as dengue, chikungunya, and Zika fevers. Integrated mosquito management (IMM) of Ae. albopictus is particularly difficult because it requires access to private yards in urban and suburban residences. It has become apparent that in the event of a public health concern due to this species, homeowners will have to be active participants in the control process by …

Bringing The Congregations Back In: Religious Markets, Congregational Density, And American Religious Participation, Troy Blanchard, Samuel Stroope, Charles Tolbert Sep 2014

Bringing The Congregations Back In: Religious Markets, Congregational Density, And American Religious Participation, Troy Blanchard, Samuel Stroope, Charles Tolbert

Faculty Publications

We draw on the organizational ecology tradition to frame the relationship between the religious environment of a community and local religious participation. Prior research linking religious environments to religious participation downplays a key organizational aspect of religion: the congregation. Following the organizational ecology usage of density, we argue that congregational density—the number of congregations per person within a community—impacts religious involvement by providing opportunities for participation and by fostering social accountability networks within congregations. Drawing on data from the 2000 Social Capital Community Benchmark Survey, we test the hypothesis that congregational density in a locality is associated with greater religious …

Inpp4b Suppresses Prostate Cancer Cell Invasion, Myles C. Hodgson, Elena I. Deryugina, Egla Suarez, Sandra M. Lopez, Dong Lin, Hui Xue, Ivan P. Gorlov Sep 2014

Inpp4b Suppresses Prostate Cancer Cell Invasion, Myles C. Hodgson, Elena I. Deryugina, Egla Suarez, Sandra M. Lopez, Dong Lin, Hui Xue, Ivan P. Gorlov

Dartmouth Scholarship

INPP4B and PTEN dual specificity phosphatases are frequently lost during progression of prostate cancer to metastatic disease. We and others have previously shown that loss of INPP4B expression correlates with poor prognosis in multiple malignancies and with metastatic spread in prostate cancer.

We demonstrate that de novo expression of INPP4B in highly invasive human prostate carcinoma PC-3 cells suppresses their invasion both in vitro and in vivo. Using global gene expression analysis, we found that INPP4B regulates a number of genes associated with cell adhesion, the extracellular matrix, and the cytoskeleton. Importantly, de novo expressed INPP4B suppressed the proinflammatory chemokine …

Publications and Research

Recombinant Mycobacterium bovis bacillus Calmette-Guèrin (rBCG) has been explored as a vector for vaccines against HIV because of its ability to induce long lasting humoral and cell mediated immune responses. To maximize the potential for rBCG vaccines to induce effective immunity against HIV, various strategies are being employed to improve its ability to prime CD8+ T cells, which play an important role in the control of HIV infections. In this study we adopted a previously described approach of incorporating glycolipids that activate CD1d-restricted natural killer T (NKT) cells to enhance priming of CD8+ T cells by rBCG strains expressing an …

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng Sep 2014

Synthetic Lethality As A Promising Approach For Targeted Cancer Prevention, Wei Tu, Hua Wang, Guang Peng

Mathematical Sciences: Faculty Publications

Carcinogenesis is recognized as a multistep process. It occurs over a relative long span of time, which offers intervention opportunities for cancer prevention [1] . Using drugs to prevent cancer rather than treat cancer is the major research goal in the field of ‘chemoprevention’. Tremendous research efforts have been devoted toward using natural, synthetic or biological agents to prevent, suppress or delay the initiation and or the progression of premalignant cells to cancer [1] . However a big challenge for effective cancer prevention is to identify chemoprevention agents with demonstrable efficacy and safety for healthy general …

Myeloid Derived Hypoxia Inducible Factor 1-Alpha Is Required For Protection Against Pulmonary Aspergillus Fumigatus Infection, Kelly M. Shepardson, Anupam Jhingran, Alayna Caffrey, Joshua J. Obar, Benjamin T. Suratt, Brent L. Berwin, Tobias M. Hohl, Robert A. Cramer

Dartmouth Scholarship

Hypoxia inducible factor 1α (HIF1α) is the mammalian transcriptional factor that controls metabolism, survival, and innate immunity in response to inflammation and low oxygen. Previous work established that generation of hypoxic microenvironments occurs within the lung during infection with the human fungal pathogen Aspergillus fumigatus. Here we demonstrate that A. fumigatus stabilizes HIF1α protein early after pulmonary challenge that is inhibited by treatment of mice with the steroid triamcinolone. Utilizing myeloid deficient HIF1α mice, we observed that HIF1α is required for survival and fungal clearance early following pulmonary challenge with A. fumigatus. Unlike previously reported research with bacterial …

Using The Minority Stress Model To Understand Depression In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Individuals In Nebraska, Molly Mccarthy, Christopher M. Fisher, Jay A. Irwin, Jason D. Coleman, Aja D. Kneip Pelster Sep 2014

Using The Minority Stress Model To Understand Depression In Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Individuals In Nebraska, Molly Mccarthy, Christopher M. Fisher, Jay A. Irwin, Jason D. Coleman, Aja D. Kneip Pelster

Sociology and Anthropology Faculty Publications

Previous studies demonstrated the utility of the minority stress model in understanding health disparities for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) populations. Since most research has considered large metropolitan areas, predominantly in coastal regions of the United States, this research focuses on a midwestern state, Nebraska. This study sought to assess the relationships between depressive symptoms experienced by participants (N = 770) and minority stress variables, including experiences with violence, perceptions of discrimination, and respondents’ degree of self-acceptance of their LGBT identity. Regression analysis revealed that after controlling for demographic variables, self-acceptance, and perceived discrimination were correlated with depressive symptoms. …

Identification And Characterization Of A Functional L-Gulono-1,4-Lactone Oxidase In Arabidopsis Thaliana, Siddique Aboobucker

Student Theses and Dissertations

Vitamin C (ascorbate, AsA) is essential for plant and animal health. We cannot synthesize AsA on our own and therefore we must consume it from fruits and vegetables. Ascorbate plays multiple roles in plant physiology, and increasing AsA content in plants remains challenging. There are four biosynthetic AsA pathways in plants: the D-mannose/L-galactose, L-gulose, D-galacturonate, and myo-inositol routes. The AsA metabolic network is not completely understood. The inositol pathway has four enzyme-catalyzed steps, and our group has made significant progress on characterizing the first three enzymes. This work focuses on L-gulono-1,4-lactone oxidase (GulLO), the last enzyme in the inositol pathway …
