Hemispheric Asymmetry In New Neurons In Adulthood Is Associated With Vocal Learning And Auditory Memory, Shuk C. Tsoi, Utsav V. Aiya, Kobi D. Wasner, Mimi L. Phan, Carolyn L. Pytte, David S. Vicario Sep 2014

Hemispheric Asymmetry In New Neurons In Adulthood Is Associated With Vocal Learning And Auditory Memory, Shuk C. Tsoi, Utsav V. Aiya, Kobi D. Wasner, Mimi L. Phan, Carolyn L. Pytte, David S. Vicario

Publications and Research

Many brain regions exhibit lateral differences in structure and function, and also incorporate new neurons in adulthood, thought to function in learning and in the formation of new memories. However, the contribution of new neurons to hemispheric differences in processing is unknown. The present study combines cellular, behavioral, and physiological methods to address whether 1) new neuron incorporation differs between the brain hemispheres, and 2) the degree to which hemispheric lateralization of new neurons correlates with behavioral and physiological measures of learning and memory. The songbird provides a model system for assessing the contribution of new neurons to hemispheric specialization …

The Impact Of Fish And The Commercial Marine Harvest On The Ocean Iron Cycle, Allison R. Moreno, Arlene L. M Haffa Sep 2014

The Impact Of Fish And The Commercial Marine Harvest On The Ocean Iron Cycle, Allison R. Moreno, Arlene L. M Haffa

School of Natural Sciences Faculty Publications and Presentations

Although iron is the fourth most abundant element in the Earth's crust, bioavailable iron limits marine primary production in about one third of the ocean. This lack of iron availability has implications in climate change because the removal of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere by phytoplankton requires iron. Using literature values for global fish biomass estimates, and elemental composition data we estimate that fish biota store between 0.7-7x1011 g of iron. Additionally, the global fish population recycles through excretion between 0.4-1.5x1012 g of iron per year, which is of a similar magnitude as major recognized sources of iron …

Dynamically-Expressed Prion-Like Proteins Form A Cuticle In The Pharynx Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Julia B. George-Raizen, Keith R. Shockley, Nicholas F. Trojanowski, Annesia L. Lamb, David M. Raizen Sep 2014

Dynamically-Expressed Prion-Like Proteins Form A Cuticle In The Pharynx Of Caenorhabditis Elegans, Julia B. George-Raizen, Keith R. Shockley, Nicholas F. Trojanowski, Annesia L. Lamb, David M. Raizen

Publications and Research

In molting animals, a cuticular extracellular matrix forms the first barrier to infection and other environmental insults. In the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans there are two types of cuticle: a wellstudied collagenous cuticle lines the body, and a poorly-understood chitinous cuticle lines the pharynx. In the posterior end of the pharynx is the grinder, a tooth-like cuticular specialization that crushes food prior to transport to the intestine for digestion. We here show that the grinder increases in size only during the molt. To gain molecular insight into the structure of the grinder and pharyngeal cuticle, we performed a microarray analysis to …

An In Vitro Adult Mouse Muscle-Nerve Preparation For Studying The Firing Properties Of Muscle Afferents, Joy Franco, Heidi Kloefkorn, Shawn Hochman, Katherine Wilkinson Sep 2014

An In Vitro Adult Mouse Muscle-Nerve Preparation For Studying The Firing Properties Of Muscle Afferents, Joy Franco, Heidi Kloefkorn, Shawn Hochman, Katherine Wilkinson

Faculty Publications, Biological Sciences

Muscle sensory neurons innervating muscle spindles and Golgi tendon organs encode length and force changes essential to proprioception. Additional afferent fibers monitor other characteristics of the muscle environment, including metabolite buildup, temperature, and nociceptive stimuli. Overall, abnormal activation of sensory neurons can lead to movement disorders or chronic pain syndromes. We describe the isolation of the extensor digitorum longus (EDL) muscle and nerve for in vitro study of stretch-evoked afferent responses in the adult mouse. Sensory activity is recorded from the nerve with a suction electrode and individual afferents can be analyzed using spike sorting software. In vitro preparations allow …

Zooplankton Density Increases In An Irrigation Reservoir During Drought Conditions, Brett P. Olds, Brian C. Peterson, Keith D. Koupal, Casey W. Schoenebeck, Kerri M. Farnsworth-Hoback, W. Wyatt Hoback

Transactions of the Nebraska Academy of Sciences and Affiliated Societies

Harlan County Reservoir, located in south-central Nebraska, entered a drought in 2003, providing an opportunity to monitor the effects of drought on the zooplankton community in this irrigation reservoir. We sampled the zooplankton community at 15 standardized locations every other week from April through the third week of October from 2003-2011. Total zooplankton densities were higher (131.8 ±13.1 L-1) in drought reservoir conditions (2003-2006) than under normal conditions (66.6 ±9.0 L-1) (2007-2011). The zooplankton community was dominated by copepods throughout the study, with adult and immature (nauplii) copepods contributing 86.5% of the total zooplankton, while Daphnia …

The Impact Of Neogene Grassland Expansion And Aridification On The Isotopic Composition Of Continental Precipitation, Charles P. Chamberlain, Matthew J. Winnick, Hari T. Mix, Samuel D. Chamberlain, Katharine Maher Sep 2014

The Impact Of Neogene Grassland Expansion And Aridification On The Isotopic Composition Of Continental Precipitation, Charles P. Chamberlain, Matthew J. Winnick, Hari T. Mix, Samuel D. Chamberlain, Katharine Maher

Environmental Studies and Sciences

The late Cenozoic was a time of global cooling, increased aridity, and expansion of grasslands. In the last two decades numerous records of oxygen isotopes have been collected to assess plant ecological changes, understand terrestrial paleoclimate, and to determine the surface history of mountain belts. The δ¹⁸(O) values of these records, in general, increase from the mid-Miocene to the Recent. We suggest that these records record an increase in aridity and expansion of grasslands in midlatitude continental regions. We use a nondimensional isotopic vapor transport model coupled with a soil water isotope model to evaluate the role of vapor recycling …

Sleep Quality And Quantity Of Portland State University Intercollegiate Student-Athletes: A Case Study, Mara Elizabeth Birge Sep 2014

Sleep Quality And Quantity Of Portland State University Intercollegiate Student-Athletes: A Case Study, Mara Elizabeth Birge

Dissertations and Theses

According to the National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) rulebook, student-athletes are limited to 20 hours/week of official athletic activity. While this in and of itself is not a huge time commitment, when it is combined with the academic expectations that come with being a college student and athletic activities that are not included in the 20 hours/week, there isn't much time left in the week for student-athletes to get everything done. In addition to imposing daily stress, such time demands may negatively affect sleep. This study examined the sleep quality and quantity of student-athletes, as well as how much time …

Exploring The Relationship Between Faculty Perceptions Of Chairperson-Faculty Member Communication Exchanges And Department Climate, Jodi Lynn Hallsten Lyczak Sep 2014

Exploring The Relationship Between Faculty Perceptions Of Chairperson-Faculty Member Communication Exchanges And Department Climate, Jodi Lynn Hallsten Lyczak

Theses and Dissertations

Leadership communication has many consequences: those that affect an organization and its outcomes, and those that affect the followers. In academia, one of the most important leadership roles is that of the departmental chairperson. Through her or his communication, the academic chairperson influences nearly every aspect of departmental life for faculty, including organizational climate. In fact, it can be argued that the chairperson helps both create and sustain the department climate for faculty.

One perspective of leadership and communication posits that leadership is enacted in the dyadic communication that occurs between the leader and the follower. According to Leader Member …

Dsm-5 Autism Criteria Applied To Toddlers With Dsm-Iv-Tr Autism, Dasal T. Jashar Sep 2014

Dsm-5 Autism Criteria Applied To Toddlers With Dsm-Iv-Tr Autism, Dasal T. Jashar

Master's Theses

The DSM-5 diagnostic criteria for autism spectrum disorders (ASD) include substantial revisions, including the combination of the subcategories (Autistic Disorder, Asperger’s Disorder, and PDD-NOS) into one dimensional category of ASD, combining the social and communication domains into one, and requiring two rather than one repetitive and restrictive behaviors (RRBs). Concerns have been raised about the DSM-5’s sensitivity for very young children, especially since RRBs may not manifest in this age group. In order to address concerns about the sensitivity of the DSM-5 ASD criteria in toddlers, the current study examined if toddlers who received an ASD diagnosis under the DSM-IV-TR …

Breast Cancer Detection Using Interferometric Music: Experimental And Numerical Assessment, Giuseppe Ruvio, Raffaele Solimene, Antonio Cuccaro, Domenico Gaetano, Jacinta Browne, Max Ammann

Articles

Purpose: In microwave breast cancer detection, it is often beneficial to arrange sensors in close proximity to the breast. The resultant coupling generally changes the antenna response. As an a priori characterization of the radio frequency system becomes difficult, this can lead to severe degradation of the detection efficacy. The purpose of this paper is to demonstrate the advantages of adopting an interferometric multiple signal classification (I-MUSIC) approach due to its limited dependence from a priori information on the antenna. The performance of I-MUSIC detection was measured in terms of signal-to-clutter ratio (SCR), signal-to-mean ratio (SMR), and spatial displacement (SD) …
