Traditional herbal medicine has been widely used in the treatment of various diseases. A number of herbal medicines have been shown to have a favourable effect in treating cancer or cancer-related diseases. Phaleria macrocarpa (Scheff.) Boerl is one of the traditional herbal medicines that appear to be useful for treating patients who are hypertensive, diabetic and cancerous. The Epstein-Barr virus (EBV)-encoded BARF1 (BamHI-A rightward frame-1) is expressed in EBV-positive malignancies such as nasopharyngeal carcinoma, EBV-associated gastric carcinoma, B cell lymphoma and nasal NK/T-cell lymphoma, and has been shown to have important role in oncogenesis. However, the mechanism by which BARF1 elicits its biological effects on EBV-positive malignant cells is unclear. In this study, the effects of BARF1 gene silencing on cell proliferation and apoptosis were investigated in EBV-positive malignant cells. Lactation impairment is commonly blamed on stress despite mothers’ determination and knowledge on breastfeeding. This research is carried out to determine the association between perceived stress and serum cortisol and prolactin levels in working and non-working mothers during the first, second, third and fourth postpartum months. It is hypothesised that working mothers would be under more stress and thus have higher cortisol level but lower prolactin levels as compared to non-working mothers. Fifty-nine postpartum mothers at two health clinics within the Kuala Lumpur urban area were recruited. The characterization of leachate from ten different landfills (sanitary and non-sanitary) in Selangor have been studied. The general chemical parameters of leachate showed large differences among the landfills. The concentration of total nitrogen, total suspended solids and ammoniacal nitrogen varied from 8.0 to 1700 mg/L, 10 to 3000 mg/L and 0.94 to 3200 mg/L, respectively. Meanwhile, the concentration of total organic carbon, biological oxygen demand (BOD5) and chemical oxygen demand (COD) were in the range of 0-45070 mg/L, 56-11360 mg/L and 165-16000 mg/L, respectively. The bark of the cinnamon tree (Cinnamomum cassia) is a popular culinary spice. It is also used in traditional medicine to maintain health and prevent disease. The antioxidant and anticancer activity of C. cassia was investigated using various assays. C. cassia bark was sequentially extracted with seven solvents of varying polarity. The acetone extract of C. cassia, at 30 μg/ml, protected the mouse fibroblast cell line, 3T3-L1, from DNA damage by 45 %, as estimated by the comet assay. Ecological aspects of diogenid hermit crabs were studied in Matang mangrove estuary and adjacent coastal waters to determine their abundance and distribution in relation to abiotic and biotic factors, population dynamics, shell use patterns, reproduction and trophodynamics. Samplings of hermit crabs and environmental parameters were carried out at mid-estuary, river mouth, coastal mudflat and offshore shoal waters, using a small otter trawl from August 2009 to March 2011. A new titanium (IV) butoxide-cyanopropyltriethoxysilane (Ti-CNPrTEOS) hybrid material was successfully synthesized as sorbent for the extraction of polar aromatic amines. The sorbent was synthesized by hydrolysis and condensation of titanium (IV) butoxide and cyanopropyltriethoxysilane with the presence of hydrochloric acid as catalyst via sol-gel method. Under the optimum synthesis conditions (tetrahydrofuran as solvent, 1.2 M of hydrochloric acid catalyst, 4 mol of water content with ratio of titanium (IV) butoxide and cyanopropylteriethoxysilane of 1:1 and aging temperature of 60°C), the sorbents were characterized by Fourier Transform-Infrared, Field-Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy-Energy, CHN elemental analysis, Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET) desorption and thermogravimetric analysis. The method for the determination of lead in wax crayon by Flame Atomic Absorption Spectrometry was adopted from Health Canada Safety Program (HCSP), Product Safety Laboratory, ‘Determination of Total Lead in Wax Crayon by Closed Vessel Micowave Digestion’ and verified. The parameter of method verification such as accuracy, precision, limit of detection, limit of quantitation and linearity were studied. Three colours from 10 boxes of wax crayon samples were analysed. Microwave digestion method was used to extract the lead prior to analysis. CG16936, which was classified as DmGSTE12 was studied in this project. This study cloned and expressed CG16936 and the resulting recombinant CG16936 has been reactive towards 1,2-dichloro-4-nitrobenze (DCNB) (0.4324 μmol/min/mg) but of no activities towards, 1-chloro-2,4-nitrobenzene, trans-2-hexenal, p-nitrobenzyl chloride (NBC), ethacryanic acid (EA), trans-4-phenyl-butene-2-one (PBO), hexa-2,4-dienal, trans,trans-hepta-2,4-dienal, 1,2-epoxy-3-p-nitrophenoxy propane (EPNP), bromosulfophthalein (BSP) and trans-oct-2-enal.
