The Association Between The Social Context Of Mealtime, Children's Diet, Caregiver's Experiences With Discrimination And Household Food Insecurity, Michael Patrick Burke
The Association Between The Social Context Of Mealtime, Children's Diet, Caregiver's Experiences With Discrimination And Household Food Insecurity, Michael Patrick Burke
Theses and Dissertations
The social context of mealtime---defined as the social interactions and practices during mealtime---plays an important role in children's diet. Household food insecurity disrupts or causes worry about the household food supply, and therefore may negate the positive effect of the social context of meals; however, little research has examined household food security and the social context of mealtime. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between various aspects of the social context of mealtime---dietary modeling, parenting style, eating together, mealtime screen time, and priority and atmosphere of mealtime---and dietary quality among children within food-insecure households. The results …
Cellular And Biochemical Effects Of Sparstolonin B On Endothelial Cells To Inhibit Angiogenesis, Marwa Belhaj
Cellular And Biochemical Effects Of Sparstolonin B On Endothelial Cells To Inhibit Angiogenesis, Marwa Belhaj
Theses and Dissertations
Angiogenesis is the process of new blood vessel development by endothelial cells from pre-existing vasculature; however, abnormal angiogenesis contributes to the pathogenesis of many disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, cancer, and chronic inflammation. Angiogenesis in atherosclerotic plaques contributes to their instability and therefore increases the risk of plaque rupture and thrombus formation. Sparstolonin B (SsnB) is a novel bioactive compound isolated from Sparganium stoloniferum, an herb that has been used historically in the Chinese herbal medicine "SanLeng" as an herbal remedy for the treatment of several inflammatory diseases. In this study, we have explored the anti-angiogenic properties of SsnB in …
The Effects Of Snmp-2 Gene Expression On Mating Discrimination In Male Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen Taylor Ashourian
The Effects Of Snmp-2 Gene Expression On Mating Discrimination In Male Drosophila Melanogaster, Kristen Taylor Ashourian
Theses and Dissertations
In order to distinguish between relevant and extraneous stimuli, insects have adapted specialized processes to perceive cues that are beneficial for survival and proliferation. Volatile molecules in the environment can stimulate olfactory receptors (ORs) and gustatory receptors (GRs) in chemosensory organs called sensilla. Specialized proteins located within these sensilla guide and assist chemosensory molecules to the receptors, which then trigger a transduction pathway that elicits behavioral responses. Sensory Neuron Membrane Proteins (SNMPs) are transmembrane proteins found on both gustatory and olfactory sensory organs in insects. There are two forms of these proteins, SNMP-1 and SNMP-2. InDrosophila melanogaster, the function of …

Religious Motivation For Mitigating Human-Forced Climate Change: Scientifically Informed, Politically Astute, And Collaborative, Jame Schaefer
Theology Faculty Research and Publications
Purpose
– Religious organizations are among the non-government groups in the USA that are addressing climate change phenomena from their various faith perspectives and, despite the differences in their traditions and practices, are collaborating with one another to achieve their mutual goal – the establishment of policies that will mitigate the real and anticipated perils scientists are forecasting. If sufficiently motivated by their faith, informed by climate science, and politically astute, these groups may be reliable allies for climate change decision-makers to tap as they strive to achieve their mutual goal. The paper aims to discuss these issues.

Smell And Anosmia In The Aesthetic: Appreciation Of Gardens, Marta Tafalla
Smell And Anosmia In The Aesthetic: Appreciation Of Gardens, Marta Tafalla
Contemporary Aesthetics (Journal Archive)
In his Critique of the Power of Judgment, Kant defined the garden as a visual art and considered that smell plays no role in its aesthetic appreciation. If the Kantian thesis were right, then a person who has no sense of smell (who suffers from anosmia) would not be impaired in his or her aesthetic appreciation of gardens. At the same time, a visually impaired person could not appreciate the beauty of gardens, although he or she could perceive them through hearing, smell, taste, and touch. In this paper I discuss the role of smell and anosmia in the aesthetic …
Determining Undergraduate Factors That Predict Academic Success In Pharmacy School, Stephen Polley
Determining Undergraduate Factors That Predict Academic Success In Pharmacy School, Stephen Polley
MPA/MPP/MPFM Capstone Projects
Admission into pharmacy school is a very competitive process, and as a result multiple authors have looked at a variety of factors in an effort to create a systematic process that admissions committees can use to identify candidates who are likely to succeed in the rigorous pharmacy curriculum. One of the issues with this approach is that these analyses tend to be very institution-specific. In this paper I hope to identify a mechanism that the University of Kentucky (UK) College of Pharmacy admissions committee can use to efficiently and thoroughly evaluate candidates using scientifically validated factors.

Automated Landmarks Detection On 3d Human Facial Image / Ngo Chee Guan, Chee Guan Ngo
Student Works (2010-2019)
One of the methods of craniofacial anthropometry is indirect anthropometry. A measurement performs on digital facial images or x-ray images. In order to get this measurement, few definable points on structures in individual facial image are needed and mark as landmark points. Currently, most of the work in anthropometric studies uses landmark points that are manually marked on 3D facial image by examiner. This method leads to time consuming and human bias, which will vary within intra-examiner himself and among inter-examiners when involve large data sets. Biased judgment as well leads to a wider gap in measurement error. Thus, this …

Determination Of Free Glycerin And Mono-, Di-, Triglycerides In Palm-Based Biodiesel Using Fast Gas Chromatography / Pua Swee Ping, Swee Ping Pua
Student Works (2010-2019)
As the tremendous growth of biodiesel industry, demand of fast analysis turnaround time becomes essential to sustain the drastic increase of samples quantity and to deliver the result on time. A fast gas chromatography (GC) method was developed using a shorter metal column to determine free glycerin and total glycerin, as well as mono-, di-, and triglyceride content in biodiesel. More than two times reduction of analysis time (16 minutes) was achieved by using this fast GC method without sacrificing the peaks resolution. Method validation results show good linearity (r2 > 0.95) and repeatability (RSD < 8%) with acceptable limit of quantification. In addition, the calibration modules proposed in this method covers the quantification of biodiesel derived from wide range of fatty acids carbon chain, including lauric based methyl esters. This research covers the various parameters used in developing the fast GC method to analyse palm kernel and palm stearin based biodiesel.
