Determining The Standard Metabolic Rate Of The Mantis Shrimp, Squilla Empusa: The First Step In Calculating The Heat Increment Of Feeding, Emeline Marie Kelley
Determining The Standard Metabolic Rate Of The Mantis Shrimp, Squilla Empusa: The First Step In Calculating The Heat Increment Of Feeding, Emeline Marie Kelley
Biology Theses
The heat increment of feeding (HIF) is the metabolic response following a feeding period. There is an increase in metabolism following a meal. The heat increment of feeding of the mantis shrimp, Squilla empusa, has not been studied before, although almost half of the published invertebrate HIF studies have been on crustaceans.
The standard metabolic rate is the minimum metabolic rate of a postabsorptive ectotherm, at rest, during its non-active period, at a defined temperature. The standard metabolic rate (SMR) of the mantis shrimp was measured using indirect calorimetry, measuring the dissolved oxygen concentrations of the …

Burrow Morphology Of The Land Crab Gecarcinus Lateralis And The Ghost Crab Ocypode Quadrata On San Salvador Island, The Bahamas: Comparisons And Palaeoenvironmental Implications, Koji Seike, H. Allen Curran
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Burrow morphologies of the land crab Gecarcinus lateralis and the ghost crab Ocypode quadrata were investigated on East Beach, San Salvador Island, The Bahamas, with the goals of critical comparison of their morphologies and of clarifying and advancing their palaeoenvironmental usefulness. In comparing land crab burrows to those of the ghost crab, the former are simpler but more variable in overall shape. G. lateralis burrows have a more compressed form in the transverse section of the burrow shaft and possess lower (more horizontal) shaft inclination than those of O. quadrata. In the late Holocene backshore and dune deposits on San …

Stable Isotopic (Δ13C And Δ18O) Signatures Of Biogenic Calcretes Marking Discontinuity Surfaces: A Case Study From Upper Cretaceous Carbonates Of Central Dalmatia And Eastern Istria, Croatia, Mihovil Brlek, Bosiljka Glumac
Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Biogenic calcretes associated with a regional Cretaceous to Paleogene subaerial unconformity and an intraformational composite (polygenic) surface in Upper Cretaceous intra-platform peritidal successions in central Dalmatia and eastern Istria, Croatia (Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platform), were analyzed for their δ13C and δ18O signatures in order to provide insight into the conditions of subaerial exposure and calcrete development. The distinctly negative δ13C signatures of biogenic calcretes marking the regional subaerial unconformity differ considerably from the δ13C values of the host marine limestones. This indicates carbon isotope exchange of primary marine CaCO3 with CO2 released by root and rhizomicrobial respiration and subsequent precipitation of …

Geosciences: Faculty Publications
Substrate-controlled ichnofacies and biogenic calcretes represent key features for identification and interpretation of discontinuities in the carbonate rock record, which are of great significance for stratigraphic interpretations and correlations. Intraformational firmground and composite surfaces, as well as a regional Cretaceous to Paleogene (K-Pg) subaerial unconformity, developed in Upper Cretaceous to Paleogene intra-platform peritidal successions in central Dalmatia, Croatia (Adriatic-Dinaridic Carbonate Platform, ADCP), were analyzed for their trace fossil and subaerial exposure features. Thalassinoides (probably T. paradoxicus) box-work burrow systems of the substrate-controlled Glossifungites ichnofacies characterize the two documented firmgrounds and one composite (polygenic) surface. Rhizogenic laminar calcretes developed subsequently inside …

Methods Data were derived from the World Mental Health Surveys (N = 66,387; n = 357 active cancer, n = 1373 cancer survivors, n = 64,657 cancer-free respondents). The World Health Organization/Composite International Diagnostic Interview was used in all surveys to estimate CMDs prevalence rates. Respondents were also asked about mental health service utilization in the preceding 12 months. Cancer status …
How Real Is The Concern That Seed Patents Will Turn Farmers Into Inadvertent Infringers?, Christopher M. Holman
How Real Is The Concern That Seed Patents Will Turn Farmers Into Inadvertent Infringers?, Christopher M. Holman
Faculty Works
The fear that farmers could be found liable for patent infringement based on the inadvertent presence of patented genetically modified plants on the farmer’s fields has led to calls for limitations on the scope and enforceability of patents. These “reforms” would be especially problematic for agricultural biotechnology companies like Monsanto, but the repercussions could be more widespread, impacting a host of important cutting-edge technologies like synthetic biology and nanotechnology. Although stories of farmers being sued by Monsanto after their fields where inadvertently contaminated by genetic drift are widely circulated, inadvertent infringement based upon genetic drift or the presence of trace …
Characterization Of Putative Defense Genes In Nonvascular Plants, Blaine Harlan
Characterization Of Putative Defense Genes In Nonvascular Plants, Blaine Harlan
Undergraduate Honors Thesis Collection
Vascular plants have many known defenses against herbivory and pathogen infection. One inducible defense system that has been extensively studied in vascular plants is systemic acquired resistance (SAR), which is a plant-wide response that results in resistance to a wide range of pathogens Many genes that play a role in SAR have been characterized. Although several studies of plant-pathogen interactions in non-vascular plants have occurred, it was not until recently that the existence of SAR was shown in these plants. The goal of the present study was to confirm the presence of homologous defense genes in moss, and to study …

Burkholderia phymatum is a soil bacterium able to develop a nitrogen-fixing symbiosis with species of the legume genus Mimosa, and is frequently found associated specifically with Mimosa pudica. The type strain of the species, STM 815T , was isolated from a root nodule in French Guiana in 2000. The strain is an aerobic, motile, non-spore forming, Gram-negative rod, and is a highly competitive strain for nodulation compared to other Mimosa symbionts, as it also nodulates a broad range of other legume genera and species. The 8,676,562 bp genome is composed of two chromosomes (3,479,187 and 2,697,374 bp), a …
Pattern Specific Isotopic Labeling Of Phenylalanine And Incorporation Into Recombinant Protein For Macromolecular Complex Study, Mary Catherine Hames
Pattern Specific Isotopic Labeling Of Phenylalanine And Incorporation Into Recombinant Protein For Macromolecular Complex Study, Mary Catherine Hames
Dissertations
Macromolecular complexes are at the forefront of structural biology. Despite technological advances, there remains a significant size barrier for study of these systems. Site specific labeling of ILV methyl residues has been used to study systems such as the proteasome, but other methods are still needed. Aromatic amino acids have many of the advantages of methyl containing residues and are desirable for site specific labeling. They are often found in the protein core and at important interaction interfaces. Aromatic side chains have positions with multiple magnetically equivalent 1H probes and distinct carbon chemical shifts. Side chain ring flipping results in …

Effects Of Toxic Cyanobacteria (Microcystis Aeruginosa) On The Feeding And Reproduction Ecology Of The Copepod Eurytemora Affinis From Green Bay, Lake Michigan, Nicholas J. Barrett
Lawrence University Honors Projects
Toxic Cyanobacteria is known to be a bad food source to consumers as well as a main contributor to harmful algal blooms. This study investigates the feeding relationship between an invasive copepod in the Great Lakes system, Eurytemora affinis, and a toxic strain of cyanobacteria, Microcystis aeruginosa. E.affinis has been shown to feed on toxic cyanobacteria. By measuring the filtering rate, ingestion rate, egg production and offspring size between three different food conditions, we hope to gain insight into the effects of toxic cyanobacteria on the feeding and reproduction of this copepod. Food sources include a good green algal …

Fat mass is linked mechanistically to the cardiovascular system through leptin, a 16 kDa protein produced primarily by adipocytes. In addition to increasing blood pressure via hypothalamic-sympathetic pathways, leptin stimulates monocyte migration, cytokine secretion, and other functions that contribute to atherosclerotic plaque development. These functions are also characteristics of CD16-positive monocytes that have been implicated in the clinical progression of atherosclerosis. This investigation sought to determine if leptin promoted the development of such CD16-positive monocytes. Cells from 45 healthy men and women with age ranging from 20 to 59 years were analyzed. Circulating numbers of CD14++16++ monocytes, which are primary …

Identification Of Small Molecules That Inhibit Prostate Cancer Cell Proliferation, Rainel Zelaya
HIM 1990-2015
Prostate cancer is the second most often diagnosed cancer and internationally the sixth foremost cause of cancer death in males, as of 2011. Within the United States it is the most common form of cancer in men with 186,000 new cases and with an overall 28,600 deaths in 2008, and it is the second leading kind of cancer-related death in men. The widespread threat that prostate cancer poses against men across the globe cannot be understated, and its initiation and progression must be understood in order to truly comprehend its implicated risks and possible forms of treatment. As its name …

Role Of Solids Retention Time On Complete Nitrification: Mechanistic Understanding And Modeling, Guoqiang Liu, Jianmin Wang
Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Effects of solids retention time (SRT) on both steps of the nitrification process (e.g., ammonia oxidation and nitrite oxidation) and the nitrifier community in a complete-mix activated sludge process were studied. At a SRT less than or equal to 20 days, the effluent ammonia concentration was lower than the effluent nitrite concentration. At the 40-day SRT, however, the effluent nitrite concentration became equal to or less than the effluent ammonia concentration. Quantitative Polymerase Chain Reaction (QPCR) assays indicated that increasing SRT significantly increased nitrite-oxidizing bacteria/ammonia-oxidizing bacteria (NOB/AOB) ratio. Further investigation indicated that Nitrosomonas europaea/eutropha were the dominant AOB for ammonia …

Gene Expression Of Components Of The Insulin/Insulin-Like Signaling Pathway In Response To Heat Stress In The Garter Snake, Thamnophis Elegans, Tonia S. Schwartz, Anne M. Bronikowski
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
The insulin/insulin-like signaling (IIS) pathway is an evolutionary conserved molecular signaling pathway that regulates growth, reproduction, stress resistance, and longevity in response to nutrition and external stress. While the constituents of this pathway and their functions are relatively well understood in laboratory model animals, they have not been explored in many other organisms, with notable exceptions in the fisheries literature. We tested for the gene expression of four key components of this pathway in the garter snake (Thamnophis elegans) liver, and determine how the transcription of these components responds to heat stress. We found that the two insulin-like …

Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Listeria monocytogenes is a foodborne human pathogen responsible for listerosis. The genomes of several L. monocytogenes strains have been recently sequenced. The genome of L. monocytogenes 08-5578, which was in part responsible for a significant listerosis outbreak in 2008, contains an unexpectedly high percentage of protein-encoding genes (1,927 out of 3,161; 60.96%) autonomously annotated as hypothetical proteins. The aim of this study was to test whether a manual annotation strategy could be used to assign more meaningful functional names to the hypothetical proteins of 08-5578. A holistic, manual gene annotation strategy that utilized sequence homology, cellular localization predictions, structure-based evidence, …

The Role Of An Urban Tallgrass Prairie Remnant In Conservation: A Case Study In Central Iowa (Usa), Jimmie D. Thompson, Deborah Q. Lewis, William R. Norris
Journal of the Iowa Academy of Science: JIAS
Although more than 85% of Iowa (USA) was covered by tallgrass prairie at the time of settlement by Europeans in the early 19th century, less than 0.1% remains. The Richard W. Pohl State Preserve at Ames (IA) High School, surrounded on three sides by structures, roads, and other development, protects 4 ha of tallgrass prairie. The preserve, commonly referred to as Ames High Prairie (AHP), was grazed but never plowed under private ownership until its acquisition by the Ames School District in 1959.

General And Special Education Teachers' Perspectives Of Full Membership For Students With Disabilities, Pamela S. Morgan
Doctoral Dissertations
The idea of full membership (FM) for students with disabilities (SWD) originated with the 1975 Education for all Handicapped Children Act which required equal educational access for these students. Full membership has evolved from mainstreaming to focusing on acceptance and belonging in a school community where all stakeholders have a voice and the culture is reflective of these values and beliefs. Despite American public education policy, there appears to be minimal progress for SWD in gaining FM. This phenomenological qualitative study was conducted to gain insight into the perceptions and lived experiences of teachers. Comparing two high schools in the …

Psychopathy And The Hexaco Personality Model, M. Todd Lobrano
Doctoral Dissertations
Within the recently published DSM-5, alternative diagnostic criteria for personality disorders have been offered (American Psychiatric Association [APA], 2013). These changes allow for a more dimensional diagnostic system than has been previously used while maintaining some aspects of a categorical system (Skodol et al., 2011). These changes also include a description of specific traits that characterize personality disorders and make it possible for measures of normal personality to have a more significant impact in their diagnosis. Relevant to the present study are the changes in the diagnosis of antisocial personality disorder and psychopathy, considered by many to be an extreme …
