Subteen, Preteen, Tween: Preadolescent Literature Inside And Out, Bethany Fort Jan 2014

Subteen, Preteen, Tween: Preadolescent Literature Inside And Out, Bethany Fort

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis focuses on the inside and outside of preadolescent literature, a subgenre that has been widely neglected by literary scholars, educators, and book publishers. In Chapter 2, I analyze the themes within The Giver by Lois Lowry and use the developmental stage of preadolescence to define a subgenre of preadolescence, which has distinct characteristics that separate it from the other subgenres of children’s literature. In Chapter 3, I focus on the outside of preadolescent literature, using the results of bookseller and author surveys and research on the history of the tween retail market to uncover the subtle messages being …

Analyzing The Depictions Of The Multiracial Child Character In Children's Media, Rachael C. Jackson Jan 2014

Analyzing The Depictions Of The Multiracial Child Character In Children's Media, Rachael C. Jackson

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The 2000 U.S. Census is the first in which a person could mark more than one racial identification box. Acknowledging this identity marks progress by recognizing an underserved population, but the media lags behind in the representation of Multiracial people in texts. My analysis of contemporary media examples (1) has the capacity to initiate conversations about the bigger social implication of race and diversity in the media; (2) sheds light on the rarity of Multiracial characters and the ways in which Multiracial characters are depicted; (3) suggests that greater access to Multiracial characters is granted to older audiences; (4) recognizes …

Effect Of Epic Panel Presentations On The Attitudes Of Emu Students Toward Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, And Transgender Individuals, Silvana Alfaro-Bordon

Senior Honors Theses and Projects

Lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) individuals are affected by stigma in the workplace, health-care settings, their families, and their communities. Some people believe that being LGB or Tis unnatural. LGBT individuals are commonly stigmatized, which makes them feel rejected and disrespected for who they are. The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Eastern Pride & Identity Coalition (EPIC) panels on the LGBT-related attitudes of students at EMU. EPIC is a group of students, faculty, staff, and community members who serve as a panel of individuals and go into classrooms to talk about their own experiences …

Social Defense: An Evolutionary-Developmental Model Of Children’S Strategies For Coping With Threat In The Peer Group, Meredith J. Martin, Patrick T. Davies, Leigha A. Macneill Jan 2014

Social Defense: An Evolutionary-Developmental Model Of Children’S Strategies For Coping With Threat In The Peer Group, Meredith J. Martin, Patrick T. Davies, Leigha A. Macneill

Department of Educational Psychology: Faculty Publications

Navigating the ubiquitous conflict, competition, and complex group dynamics of the peer group is a pivotal developmental task of childhood. Difficulty negotiating these challenges represents a substantial source of risk for psychopathology. Evolutionary developmental psychology offers a unique perspective with the potential to reorganize the way we think about the role of peer relationships in shaping how children cope with the everyday challenges of establishing a social niche. To address this gap, we utilize the ethological reformulation of the emotional security theory as a guide to developing an evolutionary framework for advancing an understanding of the defense strategies children use …

The Past, Present, And Future Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation Research, Susan M. Sheridan Dr., Brandy L. Clarke, Kelly A. Ransom Jan 2014

The Past, Present, And Future Of Conjoint Behavioral Consultation Research, Susan M. Sheridan Dr., Brandy L. Clarke, Kelly A. Ransom

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Children’s developmental and educational outcomes are determined through a complex interplay of biological and eco-systemic variables. In order to best understand children’s educational success, aspects of home and school contexts have been examined, for they are the two most directly influential settings in a child’s life. Among ecological variables, key indicators of children’s academic success include family engagement and family-school partnerships (Christenson, 2004). When parents engage in supportive practices for their child’s learning, benefits for children, families, educators, classrooms, and schools are re-alized Oeynes, 2007). The relevance of families’ educational influence has been widely rec-ognized by educational institutions (e.g., Harvard …

The Influence Of Rurality And Parental Affect On Kindergarten Children’S Social And Behavioral Functioning, Susan M. Sheridan Dr., Natalie A. Koziol, Brandy L. Clarke, Kristin M. Rispoli, Michael J. Coutts

Nebraska Center for Research on Children, Youth, Families, and Schools: Faculty Publications

Research Findings: Children’s early academic achievement is supported by positive social and behavioral skills, and difficulties with these skills frequently gives way to underachievement. Social and behavioral problems often arise as a product of parent-child interactional patterns and environmental influences. Few studies have examined the role of a salient aspect of children’s environments, community locale, in the relationship between parenting practices and child outcomes. Using a large, nationally representative sample, we examined whether preschool parenting practices and children’s social-behavioral skills in kindergarten were related to geographic setting (rural vs. city, suburban, and town). Results indicated that rural children experienced …

The Natural History And Captive Husbandry Of The Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, Cicindela (=Ellipsoptera) Nevadica Lincolniana (Coleoptera: Carabidae)., Joseph A. Palmer, Kay Klatt Jan 2014

The Natural History And Captive Husbandry Of The Salt Creek Tiger Beetle, Cicindela (=Ellipsoptera) Nevadica Lincolniana (Coleoptera: Carabidae)., Joseph A. Palmer, Kay Klatt

Entomology Papers from Other Sources

Tiger beetles have long been admired for their mix of beauty, speed, and ferocious hunting abilities (Pearson 2011). The tiger beetles are some of the fastest insects on the planet with the Australian species, Cicindela hudsoni being clocked at 2.5meters per second (Merrit 1999). The tiger beetles run so fast that they are temporarily blinded when they are engaged in the high speed pursuit of their prey (Friedlander 2014). However, despite their speed, and the joy they bring to many enthusiasts, tiger beetles are unable to outrun the destruction and degradation of their habitats by human activities, and an estimated …

Sociobiophysicality And The Necessity Of Critical Theory: Moving Beyond Prevailing Conceptions Of Environmental Sociology In The Usa, Alex Stoner Jan 2014

Sociobiophysicality And The Necessity Of Critical Theory: Moving Beyond Prevailing Conceptions Of Environmental Sociology In The Usa, Alex Stoner

Journal Articles

Today, to perceive the link between society and environment does not require that we engage in an effort of great abstraction. What remains paradoxical is that the intensity and scale of societally induced environmental degradation, which rose to historically unprecedented levels during the latter half of the 20th century, is synchronous with an equally impressive increase in public concern for and attention to the biophysical world. This article examines values-based and traditional Marxist-oriented approaches to environmental sociology in the USA in order to assess whether or not – and if so, how exactly – these approaches help us make sense …

From Turkey Trot To Twitter: Policing Puberty, Purity, And Sex-Positivity, Mae C. Quinn Jan 2014

From Turkey Trot To Twitter: Policing Puberty, Purity, And Sex-Positivity, Mae C. Quinn

Journal Articles

For over one hundred years, American social structures have largely embraced two central principles—the innocence of children and the omniscience of adults. But as we now know from behavioral and development experts, adolescents—neither children nor adults—challenge such simplistic categories. In resisting binaries, adolescents represent a threat to the standard world order. But rather than simply accepting the fluid nature of adolescents and adolescence, American adults continually try to manage, regulate and control teens in ways that deny their agency, encroach upon their personhood, and impede social change. From outward appearance, to physical presence, to intimate communications and engagements, young people …

Communication And Healthy Sexual Practices: Toward A Holistic Communicology Of Sexuality, Jimmie Manning Jan 2014

Communication And Healthy Sexual Practices: Toward A Holistic Communicology Of Sexuality, Jimmie Manning

Faculty Books & Book Chapters

This essay proposes a holistic communicology of sexuality inclusive of connections between sex, relationships, and health. Noting the rarity of research studies about sexuality in the communication discipline, two approaches to research that have gained traction are explored: medical and critical approaches. An argument is then made for the importance of a relational approach to researching sexual health. Links between existing research involving sex, relationships, and health are offered with a particular focus on interpersonal communication. Three original research studies are offered to extend this approach. The first explores multiadic interview data from families who enacted purity pledges. Results indicate …

Integrative Approaches For Biological Network Inferences, Dongchul Kim Jan 2014

Integrative Approaches For Biological Network Inferences, Dongchul Kim

Computer Science and Engineering Dissertations - Archive

Inferring biological networks from high-throughput bioinformatics data is one of the most interesting areas in the systems biology research in order to elucidate cellular and physiological mechanisms. In this thesis, network inference methods are proposed to solve biological problems. We first investigated how the exposure to low dose ionizing radiation (IR) affects the human body by observing the signaling pathway associated with Ataxia Telangiectasia mutated using Reverse Phase Protein Array and isogenic human Ataxia Telangiectasia cells under different amounts and durations of IR exposure. DNA damage-caused pathways are derived from learning Bayesian networks in integration with prior knowledge such as …

Formalizing Theories Of Development: A Fugue On The Orderliness Of Change, Scott F. Gilbert, J. Bard Jan 2014

Formalizing Theories Of Development: A Fugue On The Orderliness Of Change, Scott F. Gilbert, J. Bard

Biology Faculty Works

This chapter looks at developmental biology as performance. Each animal inherits score (the DNA), mechanisms for interpreting of the score, and mechanisms for improvisation should the score be deficient. Developmental causation is found to be both upwards from the genome, downward from the environment, and laterally between cells. Developmental plasticity, organicism, phenotypic heterogeneity, symbiotic co-development, and cytoplasmic localization are each examples of causation from the environment downward. Stereocomplementary relationships are the key components of most developmental interactions. These interactions can be placed into a formal language of graph theory. Morphogenesis can be depicted in the general structure, where nouns cover …

Characterizing The Maternally Inherited Endosymbionts Of Solitary Bees, Abiya Saeed Jan 2014

Characterizing The Maternally Inherited Endosymbionts Of Solitary Bees, Abiya Saeed

Theses and Dissertations--Entomology

Solitary bees are important pollinators of crops, with species in the family Megachilidae (mason bees) being used for orchard pollination. Commercial movement of these bees also moves their microbiota, including bacterial endosymbionts capable of reproductive manipulation. To test for presence of these bacteria, I screened commercially available species of US orchard pollinators and locally captured solitary bees from Kentucky. I also set up mason bee boxes in five apple orchards to examine recruitment of local pollinators. I conducted 454-pyrosequencing to determine bacterial diversity within four species followed by diagnostic PCR of 30 collected species (184 individuals) to determine infection frequency …
