Challenges Faced By Hearing Impaired Adolescent Schoolgirls In Western Kenya: The Need For School Leadership To Respond., Miriam Makungu Makokha Jan 2014

Challenges Faced By Hearing Impaired Adolescent Schoolgirls In Western Kenya: The Need For School Leadership To Respond., Miriam Makungu Makokha

Master of Education

While many countries have made progress towards achieving equality in education among the Hearing Impaired (HI), HI adolescent schoolgirls in Kenya continue to face many obstacles that impede their path to learning. They experience double discrimination based on their gender and disability. These concerns are complicated by the fact that few strong, positive and successful female HI role models exist within their communities and at school. While a number of studies have been conducted to investigate HI girls’ challenges in schools, very little is known about how school leadership addresses these challenges especially in the Kenyan context. This research therefore …

The Hydraulic Conductivity Structure Of Gravel-Dominated Vadose Zones Within Alluvial Floodplains, Ronald B. Miller, Derek M. Heeren, Garey A. Fox, Todd Halihan, Daniel E. Storm, Aaron R. Mittelstet Jan 2014

The Hydraulic Conductivity Structure Of Gravel-Dominated Vadose Zones Within Alluvial Floodplains, Ronald B. Miller, Derek M. Heeren, Garey A. Fox, Todd Halihan, Daniel E. Storm, Aaron R. Mittelstet

Department of Agricultural and Biological Systems Engineering: Faculty Publications

The floodplains of many gravel-bed streams have a general stratigraphy that consists of a layer of topsoil covering gravel-dominated subsoil. Previous research has demonstrated that this stratigraphy can facilitate preferential groundwater flow through focused linear features, such as paleochannels, or gravelly regions within the vadose zone. These areas within the floodplain vadose zone may provide a route for interactions between the floodplain surface and alluvial groundwater, effectively extending the hyporheic zone across the floodplain during high stream stage. The objective of this research was to assess the structure and scale of texture heterogeneity within the vadose zone within the gravel …

Relatedness Of Male Hoary Bats At A Migratory Stopover Site In Northwestern California, April K. Kaneshiro Jan 2014

Relatedness Of Male Hoary Bats At A Migratory Stopover Site In Northwestern California, April K. Kaneshiro

Student Summer Scholars Manuscripts

The social structure and genetic make-up of the hoary bat (Lasiurus cinereus) during its fall migration is not well known. Recently, pairs of male hoary bats were observed flying together in the Humboldt Redwoods during the autumn migration. When one individual was netted, the other member of the pair circled around and remained in the area while the two bats called to one another. This suggests a strong social, and a possible genetic, bond between the two males. In order to determine whether these males were related, wing tissue samples were collected from 15 pairs and 76 singleton individuals from …

Americans And Climate Change: Transnationalism And Reflection In Environmental Writing, Brian Glaser

English Faculty Articles and Research

This article reads three American works of climate change life writing in order to examine how print culture in America is responding to growing awareness of the threat of global climate change. Engaging with Ursula Heise’s work on American environmental writing, I argue against a binary conception of cosmopolitan and provincial responses to this threat, seeking to show how ambitious individual reactions to climate change are complicated and enhanced by ways of relating and collaborating with other humans and other species.

An Analysis Of The Recycling Policy At The University Of South Dakota, Nolan Schroeder

Sustainability & Environment Papers

The University of South Dakota has increased its regional and national reputation through the achievement of numerous milestones within the last decade. However, a failure to develop policies conducive to its institutional integrity undermines the successes of the past. Already being surpassed by other South Dakota Board of Regents institutions in implementing sustainability measures, a serious analysis of the current recycling policy is necessary to produce increased recycling opportunity at USD.

Race And Ethnicity, Sergio Romero Jan 2014

Race And Ethnicity, Sergio Romero

Sociology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Have you ever considered a reality in which you had the ability to create an image of your liking? What body shape and height would you select? Hair color and texture? Eye color? Skin tone? In the 2009 science-fiction film the Surrogates, people do just that. They live their lives through surrogate robots of their choosing. If sociologists were to study this phenomenon, they would first observe the selections people made. Second, they would try to understand why people selected the features they did. How did they determine what their ideal characteristics should be? The explanations would be numerous, …

Hope For The Dammed: The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers And The Greening Of The Mississippi, Todd Shallat Jan 2014

Hope For The Dammed: The U.S. Army Corps Of Engineers And The Greening Of The Mississippi, Todd Shallat

Faculty & Staff Authored Books

Always, like the Great Mississippi, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has been a conduit of hope and fear and scientific conjecture, of faith in American progress and terror of what progress has wrought. Always the Engineers have shouldered much of the credit and blame for massively spectacular projects. Always, since the 1820s, when the agency emerged as a builder and broker on the Mississippi, the Corps has enlisted science in the service of waterway engineering that defenders call monumental and detractors call grandiose.

My involvement began in the aftermath of Earth Day when the Corps, said a famous critic, …

Hyperparathyroidism Two Years After Radioactive Iodine Therapy In An Adolescent Male, Danielle L. Gomez, Dorothy I. Shulman Jan 2014

Hyperparathyroidism Two Years After Radioactive Iodine Therapy In An Adolescent Male, Danielle L. Gomez, Dorothy I. Shulman

Pediatrics Faculty Publications

Primary hyperparathyroidism is a very rare complication following radioactive iodine therapy. There is typically a latency period of more than a decade following radiation exposure and, therefore, it is observed almost exclusively in adults. Consequently, pediatricians are not aware of the association. We present a case of primary hyperparathyroidism due to a solitary parathyroid adenoma occurring in an adolescent male two years following radioactive iodine treatment for papillary thyroid carcinoma. Periodic screening of serum calcium following ablative doses of radioactive iodine for thyroid cancer may be justified even in adolescents.

The Department of Defense (DoD) is the nation's oldest agency, founded in 1789, and one of the world's largest single landholders, with approximately twenty-eight million acres under its control in the United States, its territories, and in thirty-eight countries. Over the course of nearly two and a half centuries, the DoD has enabled the United States to assert its influence and power on a global scale, with global consequences. Responsible for the military and defensive needs of the United States, the DoD has played a pivotal role in expanding and securing the nation's territorial claims and in spurring many of …

Chemical Control Of Turfgrass Diseases 2014, Paul Vincelli, Gregg Munshaw Jan 2014

Chemical Control Of Turfgrass Diseases 2014, Paul Vincelli, Gregg Munshaw

Agriculture and Natural Resources Publications

Turfgrasses under intensive management are often subject to outbreaks of infectious diseases. Diseases usually are most damaging when weather or cultural conditions favor the disease-causing agent but not plant growth and vigor. Cultural conditions that predispose turfgrass to diseases include close mowing, inadequate or excessive nitrogen fertility, light or frequent irrigation, excessive thatch, poor drainage, and shade.

Good turf management practices often greatly reduce the impact of disease by promoting healthy plants that are better able to resist infections. Even under good management, however, diseases sometimes cause excessive damage to highly managed turfgrasses. The proper use of fungicides in these …

Fly Ash As A Potential Scrubber Of Acidic Wastes From The Phosphate Industries In Israel, Roy Nir Lieberman, Eli Lederman, Ithamar Pelly, Haim Cohen Jan 2014

Fly Ash As A Potential Scrubber Of Acidic Wastes From The Phosphate Industries In Israel, Roy Nir Lieberman, Eli Lederman, Ithamar Pelly, Haim Cohen

Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive

Fly ash (FA) is produced in Israeli utilities via bituminous coal combustion. It is used as a cement additive or in concrete production, and its economic value is low. The FA produced in Israel is very basic (defined as class F) owing to ambient air quality standards that impose low sulfur content in the imported coals. Because the lime content is high (in the South African coal, ,10 wt%), it is a good potential chemical scrubber to acidic wastes. The phosphate industry in Israel produces mainly phosphate fertilizers and water-treatment products as well as phosphoric acid. The production methods rely …

Coal Combustion and Gasification Products Journal Archive

The fuel, bed ash, and fly ash were sampled from a circulating fluidized bed combustion (CFBC) unit at two times. The first sampling was a high-sulfur (S) coal-only run, and the second sampling coincided with an experimental burn of up to 10% switchgrass (Panicum virgatum) pressed pellets mixed with a high-S coal. The latter blend had a higher moisture content and a lower heating value than the coal-only fuel. Given the time between the samplings and the special needs for the experimental run, unavoidable changes in the coal and limestone complicate comparisons of the bed ash and fly ash chemistry …

Different Gene-Specific Mechanisms Determine The ‘Revised-Response’ Memory Transcription Patterns Of A Subset Of A. Thaliana Dehydration Stress Responding Genes, Ning Liu, Yong Ding, Michael Fromm, Zoya Avramova Jan 2014

Different Gene-Specific Mechanisms Determine The ‘Revised-Response’ Memory Transcription Patterns Of A Subset Of A. Thaliana Dehydration Stress Responding Genes, Ning Liu, Yong Ding, Michael Fromm, Zoya Avramova

School of Biological Sciences: Faculty Publications

Plants that have experienced several exposures to

dehydration stress show increased resistance to future

exposures by producing faster and/or stronger

reactions, while many dehydration stress responding

genes in Arabidopsis thaliana super-induce their

transcription as a ‘memory’ from the previous encounter.

A previously unknown, rather unusual,

memory response pattern is displayed by a subset

of the dehydration stress response genes. Despite

robustly responding to a first stress, these genes

return to their initial, pre-stressed, transcript levels

during the watered recovery; surprisingly, they do

not respond further to subsequent stresses of similar

magnitude and duration. This transcriptional behavior

defines the …

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring For Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, 2013 Annual Report, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke Jan 2014

Plant Community Composition And Structure Monitoring For Agate Fossil Beds National Monument, 2013 Annual Report, Isabel W. Ashton, Michael Prowatzke

United States National Park Service: Publications

Introduction

During the last century, much of the prairie within the Northern Great Plains has been plowed for cropland, planted with non-natives to maximize livestock production, or otherwise developed, making it one of the most threatened ecosystems in the United States. Within Nebraska, greater than 77% of the area of native mixed-grass prairie has been lost since European settlement (Samson and Knopf 1994). The National Park Service (NPS) plays an important role in preserving and restoring some of the last pieces of intact prairies within its boundaries. The stewardship goal of the NPS is to “preserve ecological integrity and cultural …

New Jersey Center for Water Science & Technology Reports

Flooding is a regular concern in both Little Ferry and Moonachie along the tidal Hackensack River. Although the storm surge from Hurricane Sandy highlighted their vulnerability to an extreme event, smaller more frequent events regularly occur and impact residents, commerce and the area’s transportation infrastructure. This study addressed improvements to the stormwater drainage system for storm events that are limited to a storm surge that reaches the vertical extent of the protective berms surrounding the area. The proposed flood remedies take into account both the scale of the remedy itself as well as the event. The scales investigated are 1.) …

Molecular Identification Of A Fungal Pathogen Batrachochytrium Dendrobatidis And Its Impact On Amphibians In Urban Landscaping Districts Of New Jersey, Tin-Chun Chu, Meiyin Wu, Lauren Pohren, Bobak Haghjoo, Christina Soman, Lee H. Lee Jan 2014

Lee

Department of Biology Faculty Scholarship and Creative Works

In urban landscape, amphibians face many challenges in order to sustain their populations, such as road mortality and infection of pathogenic Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis (Bd). Bd infection has been reported to cause significant mortality; however, its current distribution in the state of New Jersey remains unknown. In spring, amphibians emerge from their wintering group and migrate to nearby breeding ponds or vernal pools. Their migration pathway is often intercepted by the dense network of human transportation which leads to extirpation. This study aims to investigate potential mortality caused by human transportation and the infected rate of Bd fungus on the amphibian …
