Behavioral Criteria For The Diagnosis Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In Zalophus Californianus, Christiana Wittmaack Apr 2014

Behavioral Criteria For The Diagnosis Of Domoic Acid Toxicosis In Zalophus Californianus, Christiana Wittmaack

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Introduction

California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) health is severely compromised by domoic acid toxicosis, which occurs in high levels during harmful algal blooms of Pseudonitzschia australis along the coast of California. Current diagnostic protocols are often inconclusive due to a 2-48 hour window of detectability within the urinary, circulatory, and gastric systems (Cook, et al. 2011 and Monte, Pers Comm, 2012). Past studies suggest that Z. californianus, with domoic acid toxicosis, commonly display abnormal behaviors (Goldstein, et al. 2008). However, many of these abnormal behaviors are also associated with other diagnoses and are therefore unreliable as diagnostic indicators. …

Genotypic Variation In A Foundation Tree (Populus Tremula L.) Explains Community Structure Of Associated Epiphytes, Chantel Davies, Christopher J. Ellis, Glenn R. Iason, Richard A. Ennos Apr 2014

Genotypic Variation In A Foundation Tree (Populus Tremula L.) Explains Community Structure Of Associated Epiphytes, Chantel Davies, Christopher J. Ellis, Glenn R. Iason, Richard A. Ennos

Aspen Bibliography

Community genetics hypothesizes that within a foundation species, the genotype of an individual significantly influences the assemblage of dependent organisms. To assess whether these intra-specific genetic effects are ecologically important, it is required to compare their impact on dependent organisms with that attributable to environmental variation experienced over relevant spatial scales. We assessed bark epiphytes on 27 aspen (Populus tremula L.) genotypes grown in a randomized experimental array at two contrasting sites spanning the environmental conditions from which the aspen genotypes were collected. We found that variation in aspen genotype significantly influenced bark epiphyte community composition, and to the …

Modeling And Monitoring Terrestrial Primary Production In A Changing Global Environment: Toward A Multiscale Synthesis Of Observation And Simulation, Shufen Pan, Hanqin Tian, Shree R. S. Dangal, Zhiyun Ouyang, Bo Tao, Wei Ren, Chaoqun Lu, Steven W. Running

Ecosystem and Conservation Sciences Faculty Publications

There is a critical need to monitor and predict terrestrial primary production, the key indicator of ecosystem functioning, in a changing global environment. Here we provide a brief review of three major approaches to monitoring and predicting terrestrial primary production: (1) ground-based field measurements, (2) satellite-based observations, and (3) process-based ecosystem modelling. Much uncertainty exists in the multi-approach estimations of terrestrial gross primary production (GPP) and net primary production (NPP). To improve the capacity of model simulation and prediction, it is essential to evaluate ecosystem models against ground and satellite-based measurements and observations. As a case, we have shown the …

The Moral Panic About The Socializing Of Young People In Minangkabau, Lyn Parker Apr 2014

The Moral Panic About The Socializing Of Young People In Minangkabau, Lyn Parker

Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia

This paper analyses the discourse surrounding the perceived threat of free seks and pergaulan bebas (free socializing) to the moral health of young Minangkabau people, and in particular, young women, in West Sumatra. It uses the sociological frame of "moral panic" to examine contemporary discussions about globalization and the influence of "the West" in West Sumatra. The paper examines the way in which "the authorities" in West Sumatra (media, such as teen magazines and newspapers, academics, government and law, teachers, and community leaders) present the threat, and the way in which young people, who are the target of the moral …

Lia4 And Hp1-Like Proteins Facilitate Dna Elimination During Tetrahymena Macronuclear Development, Scott Horrell Apr 2014

Lia4 And Hp1-Like Proteins Facilitate Dna Elimination During Tetrahymena Macronuclear Development, Scott Horrell

All Theses and Dissertations (ETDs)

As part of its sexual development, the ciliate Tetrahymena thermophila establishes a differentiated somatic genome called the macronucleus. A key aspect of this differentiation is the genome-wide removal of transposon-like and other repetitive elements. This process, referred to DNA rearrangement, involves RNAi-directed formation of subnuclear heterochromatic foci. Many of the factors necessary to direct the DNA rearrangement machinery to proper loci have been discovered, but less is known about how these subnuclear heterochromatic foci are formed. My thesis work focuses on identification and investigation of factors important for the formation of these subnuclear structures which are referred to as DNA …

Predicting Targeted Drug Combinations Based On Pareto Optimal Patterns Of Coexpression Network Connectivity, Nadia M. Penrod, Casey S. Greene, Jason H. Moore Apr 2014

Predicting Targeted Drug Combinations Based On Pareto Optimal Patterns Of Coexpression Network Connectivity, Nadia M. Penrod, Casey S. Greene, Jason H. Moore

Dartmouth Scholarship

Molecularly targeted drugs promise a safer and more effective treatment modality than conventional chemotherapy for cancer patients. However, tumors are dynamic systems that readily adapt to these agents activating alternative survival pathways as they evolve resistant phenotypes. Combination therapies can overcome resistance but finding the optimal combinations efficiently presents a formidable challenge. Here we introduce a new paradigm for the design of combination therapy treatment strategies that exploits the tumor adaptive process to identify context-dependent essential genes as druggable targets. We have developed a framework to mine high-throughput transcriptomic data, based on differential coexpression and Pareto optimization, to investigate drug-induced …

Science Fiction/Fantasy And The Representation Of Ethnic Futurity, Joy Ann Sanchez-Taylor Apr 2014

Science Fiction/Fantasy And The Representation Of Ethnic Futurity, Joy Ann Sanchez-Taylor

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Science Fiction/Fantasy and the Representation of Ethnic Futurity examines the influence of science fiction/fantasy (SFF) as applied to twentieth century and contemporary African American, Native American and Latina/o texts. Bringing together theories of racial identity, hybridity, and postcolonialism, this project demonstrates how twentieth century and contemporary ethnic American SFF authors are currently utilizing tropes of SFF to blur racial distinctions and challenge white/other or colonizer/colonized binaries. Ethnic American SFF authors are able to employ SFF landscapes that address narratives of victimization or colonization while still imagining worlds where alternate representations of racial and ethnic identity are possible.

My multicultural approach …

Galapagos Mosquitoes As Avian Disease Vectors, Daniel Anthony Hartman Apr 2014

Galapagos Mosquitoes As Avian Disease Vectors, Daniel Anthony Hartman

Theses

An avian malaria parasite of the genus Plasmodium has been detected consistently in the Galapagos Penguin (Speniscus mendiculus) in recent years. Subsequent screening of passerines has revealed more PCR positive birds, with most of them sampled on the southern coasts of Isabela and Santa Cruz islands. We sampled the two zoophilic mosquito species (Aedes taeniorhynchus and Culex quinquefasciatus) using both CDC light traps and CDC gravid traps along an altitudinal gradient from the southern coasts of these islands to the highlands to investigate whether mosquitoes occur at all elevations, and whether there may be mosquito-free refugia at higher elevation zones …

Turner, Ruby Pawankar, Steve Taylor, Scott Sicherer, Gideon Lack, Nelson Rosario, Motohiro Ebisawa, Gary Wong, E. N. Clare Mills, Kirsten Beyer, Alessandro Fiocchi, Hugh A. Sampson

Department of Food Science and Technology: Faculty Publications

Food allergy appears to be on the rise with the current mainstay of treatment centred on allergen avoidance. Mandatory allergen labelling has improved the safety of food for allergic consumers. However an additional form of voluntary labelling (termed precautionary allergen labelling) has evolved on a wide range of packaged goods, in a bid by manufacturers to minimise risk to customers, and the negative impact on business that might result from exposure to trace amounts of food allergen present during cross-contamination during production. This has resulted in near ubiquitous utilisation of a multitude of different precautionary allergen labels with subsequent confusion …

Queeranimal Imaginary: An Intra-Active Investigation Of Ecology, Performance, And Sound, Caryn Brissey

Theses and Dissertations

Through interrelated experiments in writing, video, sound, and movement, this research investigates the intersections of intimacy, ecology, and performance. Integrating an autoethnographic approach to gender and sexuality with creative practice and theoretical inquiry, this layered investigation offers implications that are both deeply personal and widely accessible. I am using my own experiences growing up as a queer child to generative corporeal and experience-based material, while also incorporating the ideas of current queer and gender theorists to frame my own research within the larger context of feminist studies. This research culminated into an evening length performance at Dogtown Dance Theatre on …

Bakhtin’S Carnivalesque: A Gauge Of Dialogism In Soviet And Post-Soviet Cinema, Randy Davis Apr 2014

Bakhtin’S Carnivalesque: A Gauge Of Dialogism In Soviet And Post-Soviet Cinema, Randy Davis

Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation examines fifteen films produced in seven political eras from 1926 thru 2008 in Soviet / Post-Soviet Russia. Its aim is to determine if the cinematic presence of Bakhtin’s ten signifiers of the carnivalesque (parody, death, grotesque display, satirical humor, billingsgate, metaphor, fearlessness, madness, the mask, and the interior infinite) increase in their significance with the historical progression from a totalitarian State (e.g., USSR under Stalin) to a federal semi-residential constitutional republic (e.g., The Russian Federation under Yeltsin - Putin). In this study, the carnivalesque signifiers act as a gauge of dialogism, the presence of which is indicative of …

Mafia Or Farmer? Coevolutionary Consequences Of Retaliation And Farming As Predator Strategies Upon Host Nests By Avian Brood Parasites, Mark E. Hauber Apr 2014

Mafia Or Farmer? Coevolutionary Consequences Of Retaliation And Farming As Predator Strategies Upon Host Nests By Avian Brood Parasites, Mark E. Hauber

Publications and Research

Many host species of avian brood parasites have evolved to recognize and reject foreign eggs and chicks in the nest. Yet, other hosts accept and care for parasitic young, despite the fitness losses associated with raising non-kin. It has been suggested that nest predation upon host nests by brood parasites could select for coevolved acceptance by hosts, even when their cognitive and motor traits allow for the successful rejection of brood parasitism. Using a modeling approach, I analyzed the conditions that favor the evolution of two predatory strategies by parasites and the acceptance of parasitism in the presence of predatory …

Neurogenic Inflammation Involves In Systemic Spread Of Oral Infection, Haryono Utomo Apr 2014

Neurogenic Inflammation Involves In Systemic Spread Of Oral Infection, Haryono Utomo

Journal of Dentistry Indonesia

Focal infection theory proposed in early 1900’s stated that dental infection caused systemic disorders. Nevertheless, the theory was abandoned since large number of teeth were extracted with no satisfying result. Recent reports revealed that oral infections were able to spread systemically. However, there is no rationalization available to explain how assisted drainage therapy (ADT), a periodontal therapy that could relief migraine and asthma within minutes. Oral neurogenic and immunogenic inflammation interaction involving pro-inflammatory markers such as calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP), TNF-α; and antiinflammatory vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) was still under investigation. Objective: To verify the spread of oral inflammation to …

Cloning The Ultrabithorax Gene In Tribolium Castaneum, Kara I. Ludlow, Dr. Randy Bennett

Journal of Undergraduate Research

My original proposal was to clone the extradenticle gene in Tribolium castaneum (red flour beetle); however, I worked in conjunction with Laura Newell who received an ORCA grant to work with Dr. Bennett cloning the Ultrabithorax gene of the red flour beetle. To further previous research, it was determined that the Ultrabithorax gene needed to be cloned first, so Laura and I worked on that project together. Due to complications and unexpected delays, we were only able to finish cloning the Ultrabithorax gene of the beetle and did not have time to clone the extradenticle gene, as well.

Salient Distractors Can Induce Saccade Adaptation, Afsheen Khan, Sally A. Mcfadden, Mark Harwood, Josh Wallman Apr 2014

Salient Distractors Can Induce Saccade Adaptation, Afsheen Khan, Sally A. Mcfadden, Mark Harwood, Josh Wallman

Publications and Research

When saccadic eye movements consistently fail to land on their intended target, saccade accuracy is maintained by gradually adapting the movement size of successive saccades. The proposed error signal for saccade adaptation has been based on the distance between where the eye lands and the visual target (retinal error). We studied whether the error signal could alternatively be based on the distance between the predicted and actual locus of attention after the saccade. Unlike conventional adaptation experiments that surreptitiously displace the target once a saccade is initiated towards it, we instead attempted to draw attention away from the target by …
