Pharmaceutical Sciences and Research
Acnes vulgaris is a chronic inflammatory disease of sebaceous follicles caused by Propionibacterium acnes and Staphylococcus epidermidis. The antibacterial activity of Impatiens balsamina L. has been studied for many years. The aims of this study are to find out the antiacne effect from methanolic extract of stems and leaves of Impatiens balsamina L. that formulated in gel. Simplicia were extracted using soxhlet technique bu using methanol as solvent. Extracts were then formulated in gel in three variations of HPMC 4000 and Carbopol 934 as gel base with ratio of 70:30 (F1), 50:50 (F2) and 30:70 (F3). The determination of antiacne …
Indirect Effects Between Deer, Mice, And The Gypsy Moth In A Forest Community, John Wojcikiewicz
Indirect Effects Between Deer, Mice, And The Gypsy Moth In A Forest Community, John Wojcikiewicz
Theses and Dissertations
White-tailed deer are ecosystem engineers that dramatically alter forest understory vegetation. Consequently, deer can impact many species in a forest through both direct and indirect effects. One species that deer may indirectly affect is the gypsy moth, whose pupae are preyed upon by the white-footed mouse. Through alterations to understory habitat of mice, deer may reduce mouse predation on gypsy moth pupae. In this study, I tested for indirect effects of deer on the gypsy moth by comparing mouse abundance, vegetation properties, and predation on pupae inside, and outside, of long-term deer exclosures. Overall, I did not find evidence for …
Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani
Let's Judge A Magazine By Its Cover; A Textual Analysis Of The Covers Of Gadis, Suzie Handajani
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
In this article, I analyse the covers of Gadis, a magazine for Indonesian teenage girls, from 2009 to 2013. Using textual analysis, I examine these magazine covers as manifestations of local gender ideology amidst pressures from a globalized market. The models on the magazine covers are the embodiment of ideal teenagers and they reflect the magazine's personification of Indonesian adolescents. Images of the models in conjunction with the article titles displayed on the covers construct dominant themes surrounding the lives of female adolescents. In this article, I argue that the dominant gender ideology is perpetuated by the magazine; however, the …
Adolescent Social Media Interaction And Authorial Stance In Indonesian Teen Fiction, Dwi Noverini Djenar
Adolescent Social Media Interaction And Authorial Stance In Indonesian Teen Fiction, Dwi Noverini Djenar
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This article examines representations of adolescent social media interaction in two Indonesian teen novels to show how adolescent communication styles are typified. It is argued that public discourse on the potential danger of social media interaction is resounded in the novels. The article demonstrates that the authors of both novels take a similar moral stance on the issue of social media but use different rhetorical strategies for indexing that stance. Both draw on the social values of registers to communicate the stance. In Online addicted, standard Indonesian is used in narration to convey an authoritative voice and a stern moral …

Forest Net Primary Production Resistance Across A Gradient Of Moderate Disturbance, Ellen Goodrich-Stuart
Forest Net Primary Production Resistance Across A Gradient Of Moderate Disturbance, Ellen Goodrich-Stuart
Theses and Dissertations
The global carbon (C) balance is vulnerable to disturbances that alter terrestrial C uptake and loss. Moderate disturbances that kill or defoliate only a subset of canopy trees such as insect defoliation, drought, and age-related senescence are increasing in extent and frequency; yet, little is known about the effect of moderate disturbance on forest production and the mechanisms sustaining or supporting the recovery of the C cycle across a range of moderate disturbance severities. We used a broad plot-scale gradient of upper canopy tree mortality within a large manipulation of forest disturbance to: 1) quantify how aboveground wood net primary …
Determinants Of Family Planning Service Uptake And Use Of Contraceptives Among Postpartum Women In Rural Uganda, Katelyn M. Sileo
Determinants Of Family Planning Service Uptake And Use Of Contraceptives Among Postpartum Women In Rural Uganda, Katelyn M. Sileo
Master's Theses
Uganda is among the countries with the highest unmet needs for family planning, which is associated with both negative health outcomes for women. The present study was a cross-sectional secondary data analysis using Andersen’s Behavioral Model of Health Service Use (ABM) as a theoretical framework to identifying factors influencing family planning service uptake and contraceptive use among postpartum women in rural Uganda. Participants were 258 women who attended antenatal care at a rural Ugandan hospital and completed an interview approximately 13 weeks postpartum. Bivariate logistic regression models in SPSS were used to test hypothesized ABM factors as determinants of family …

Fourth Amendment Implications Of Interviewing Suspected Victims Of Abuse In School, Jennifer Kwapisz
Fourth Amendment Implications Of Interviewing Suspected Victims Of Abuse In School, Jennifer Kwapisz
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that in-school interviews of children regarding child abuse constitute seizures under the Fourth Amendment and that such seizures are unconstitutional absent a warrant, consent, or exigent circumstances. Part I of this Note provides a basic background of Fourth Amendment seizures and discusses the Fourth Amendment's role in the context of child abuse investigations. Part II examines the controversy surrounding in-school interviews of suspected child abuse victims and the implications of such interviews for children's Fourth Amendment rights. Part III proposes a rule for in-school interviews consistent with Fourth Amendment principles. It also demonstrates how such a …
Projecting The Self Into A Virtual World, Kevin S. Smith
Projecting The Self Into A Virtual World, Kevin S. Smith
University Presentation Showcase Event
The purpose of the present study was to examine the effect of perspective-taking instructions (PTI) on (a) the tendency to project aspects of the self onto a video game character and (b) the degree “telepresence” within a virtual world. Perspective taking instructions encourage subjects to imagine themselves as a story character. It has been found in the past that PTI may cause an individual to merge identities with a story character in written stories (Goldstein & Cialdini, 2007) and films (Davis et al., 1996). This study replicated these findings using a video game. Male video gamers played a video game …
Modern Day School Segregation: Equity, Excellence, And Equal Protection, Danielle Kasten
Modern Day School Segregation: Equity, Excellence, And Equal Protection, Danielle Kasten
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that, under existing Supreme Court precedent, academic tracking constitutes de jure segregation. It further contends that academic tracking systems need not be analyzed on a district-by-district basis because—in light of their unique history—wherever an academic tracking system creates within school segregation, it is per se unconstitutional. Part I of this Note analyzes the unique history of academic tracking, drawing parallels between academic tracking systems and segregation explicitly mandated by law. Part II outlines current Equal Protection doctrine both generally and within the unique context of schools, and explores how that doctrine has been applied to academic …

Keynote Address: The Moral Dimension Of Employment Dispute Resolution, Theodore J. St. Antoine
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
Here I am first going to take a quick tour of some of the world’s great texts, sacred and profane, on dispute resolution, especially through methods chosen by the parties themselves. Then I shall look at a few of the systems that have been created across the globe to settle employment disputes, and what they may have to teach us about the most appropriate procedures. Because so many courts or public tribunals around the world have become overwhelmed by the volume of today’s litigation, much of my emphasis will be on alternative dispute resolution (“ADR”). Finally, I should like …
The Catholic Church: Shaping The Roles Of Medieval Women, Ashley N. Just
The Catholic Church: Shaping The Roles Of Medieval Women, Ashley N. Just
Young Historians Conference
The paradoxical modern expectation for women to remain virgins while simultaneously being sexual objects for men to enjoy as they please is a result of the ideology of the Catholic Church in Medieval Europe. Christian doctrine at this time presented an image of women as inherently weak and prone to sexual sin as a result of Eve's Original Sin. This weakness then led to the expectation that women would remain chaste and subservient, which in turn inhibited the power and influence women possessed Medieval society. Many of the issues modern feminism fights to remedy result from these historical Christian ideas.

Biotic And Abiotic Influences On Algal Symbiont (Symbiodinium Spp.) Community Dynamics In Reef Corals Recovering From Disturbance, Paul R. Jones
Open Access Dissertations
Reef corals are mutualisms between invertebrate animals and diverse dinoflagellate algae (Symbiodinium spp.). Originally thought to be specific relationships between particular corals and Symbiodinium types, it is now accepted that many coral species can host different types of symbionts, often simultaneously. This adds complexity to the study of coral-algal symbiosis, because subtle changes in the symbiont community may result in a coral host with increased thermal tolerance or resilience. To determine how Symbiodinium community dynamics are affected by environmental stressors (abiotic factors) and exogenous sources of algal-symbionts (biotic factors), this project utilized a highly sensitive real-time PCR assay to quantify …

Background. The poor correlation between allergen-specific-IgE (asIgE) and clinical signs of allergy in helminth infected populations suggests that helminth infections could protect against allergy by uncoupling asIgE from its effector mechanisms. We investigated this hypothesis in Ugandan schoolchildren coinfected with Schistosoma mansoni and hookworm.
Methods. Skin prick test (SPT) sensitivity to house dust mite allergen (HDM) and current wheeze were assessed pre-anthelmintic treatment. Non-specific (anti-IgE), helminth-specific and HDM-allergen-specific basophil histamine release (HR), plus helminth- and HDM-specific IgE and IgG4 responses were measured pre- and post-treatment.
Results. Non-specific- and helminth-specific-HR, and associations between helminth-specific-IgE and helminth-specific-HR increased post-treatment. Hookworm infection appeared …

Optical And Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection, Tianheng Wang
Optical And Photoacoustic Imaging For Ovarian Cancer Detection, Tianheng Wang
Doctoral Dissertations
Ovarian cancer is the fifth most common cancer among women and has the highest mortality rate of all gynecologic cancers. Current clinical imaging modalities are limited by poor sensitivity and specificity. Therefore, there is an urgent need to develop effective tools to detect ovarian cancer. In this dissertation, two imaging modalities, optical coherence tomography (OCT) and photoacoustic imaging have been investigated for ovarian cancer detection and characterization.
In the first modality, optical scattering coefficient, phase retardation and phase retardation rate were quantitatively extracted from polarization-sensitive OCT (PS-OCT) images. A highly positive correlation was found between those three parameters and collagen …

A Sleep Apnea Program For Commercial Drivers, Gayla Ann Dace
Dissertations
Sleepy driving is a major contributing factor to the motor vehicle crash risk associated with commercial drivers (Pack et al., 2006). In commercial vehicles, approximately 31% to 41% of major crashes can be linked to sleepy driving (Gurubhagavatula et al., 2004). An average non-fatality crash involving a commercial motor vehicle costs about $75,637 while a fatality crash averages about $3.54 million (Gurubhagavatula et al., 2004). A contributing factor to sleepy driving is obstructive sleep apnea (Pack et al., 2006). The purposes of this study were to: (1) determine how many commercial motor vehicle drivers referred to a sleep center as …

ABSTRACT
The primary focus of this study is to explain presidential decision making, specifically whether to intervene militarily or not in a given circumstance in the Post-Cold War era. First, we define military intervention as the deployment of troops and weaponry in active military engagement (not peacekeeping). The cases in which we are interested involve the actual or intended use of force (“boots on the ground”), in other words, not drone …
