Intergroup Competition As A Double-Edged Sword: How Sex Composition Regulates The Effects Of Competition On Group Creativity, Marcus Baer, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Roger T. A. J. Leenders, Greg R. Oldham May 2014

Intergroup Competition As A Double-Edged Sword: How Sex Composition Regulates The Effects Of Competition On Group Creativity, Marcus Baer, Abhijeet K. Vadera, Roger T. A. J. Leenders, Greg R. Oldham

Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business

Building on social role theory, we extend a contingency perspective on intergroup competition proposing that having groups compete against one another is stimulating to the creativity of groups composed largely or exclusively of men but detrimental to the creativity of groups composed largely or exclusively of women. We tested this idea in two separate studies: a laboratory experiment (Study 1) and a field study (Study 2). Study 1 showed that competition had the expected positive effects on the creativity of groups composed mostly or exclusively of men and produced the predicted negative effects on the creativity of groups composed of …

Medical Imaging Specialists And 3d: A Domain Perspective On Mobile 3d Interactions, Teddy Seyed, Frank Maurer, Francisco Marinho Rodrigues, Anthony Tang May 2014

Medical Imaging Specialists And 3d: A Domain Perspective On Mobile 3d Interactions, Teddy Seyed, Frank Maurer, Francisco Marinho Rodrigues, Anthony Tang

Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems

3D volumetric medical images, such as MRIs, are commonly explored and interacted with by medical imaging experts using systems that require keyboard and mouse-based techniques. These techniques have presented challenges for medical imaging specialists: 3D spatial navigation is difficult, in addition to the detailed selection and analysis of 3D medical images being difficult due to depth perception and occlusion issues. In this work, we explore a potential solution to these challenges by using tangible interaction techniques with a mobile device to simplify 3D interactions for medical imaging specialists. We discuss preliminary observations from our design sessions with medical imaging specialists …

Guilty Until Proven Innocent: Clearing Massachusetts's Uncertain Road To Post-Conviction Dna Testing, Christian Van Buskirk Apr 2014

Guilty Until Proven Innocent: Clearing Massachusetts's Uncertain Road To Post-Conviction Dna Testing, Christian Van Buskirk

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Note argues that the current procedures for obtaining DNA testing in Massachusetts are fundamentally inadequate, and should be modified to reflect the unique power of DNA testing. Part I of this Note explores the text of the Massachusetts post-conviction discovery statute, and discusses the procedures that the courts have created for its implementation. Part II explains the framework of a post-Osborne procedural due process claim for post-conviction DNA relief and the constitutional standards that the state procedures must satisfy. Finally, Part III applies that framework and argues that Massachusetts's court-created procedures are violative of due process because …

N, N-Dimethyltryptamine And Biological Reductive Accounts For Religious And Spiritual Experiences, Shaun Smith Apr 2014

N, N-Dimethyltryptamine And Biological Reductive Accounts For Religious And Spiritual Experiences, Shaun Smith

2014-2016 Graduate

There is unquestionably a plethora of details and mysteries regarding the mind and the body. However, with the advent of psychopharmacology (the study of how psychedelics inform or alter brain states), there are more issues at hand. Do psychedelics allow us to access deeper areas of our consciousness? Are we having a spiritual experience under the influence of psychedelics? Dr. Rick Strassman does not want to continue asking these rather conspiratorial-like questions. Instead, Dr. Strassman believes that there is one special, endogenous psychedelic, synthesized within the human physiological framework: N, N-Dymthethyltryptamine. Dr. Strassman concludes that this chemical is produced within …

Nonpublic Reasons And Political Paradigm Change, Ian Bartrum Apr 2014

Nonpublic Reasons And Political Paradigm Change, Ian Bartrum

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The first Part of this Article discusses the historical conception of the liberty of conscience, argues that this idea was the central theoretical justification for the religion clauses at the time of the founding, and suggests that we can plausibly read the constitutional text as protecting the right to debate and vote for nonpublic reasons. Part II sketches Rawls's arguments and argues that-the language of duty notwithstanding-these arguments basically appeal to consequentalist kinds of reasons. It then presents an original structural account of the value of nonpublic reasons in political discourse, and looks to both Thomas Kuhn and the …

Conservation Genetics Of Crawfish Frogs At Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, Dana B. Leigh Apr 2014

Conservation Genetics Of Crawfish Frogs At Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge, Dana B. Leigh

University Presentation Showcase Event

Crawfish frogs (Lithobates areolatus) have been experiencing significant population declines across their range over the last several decades due to widespread habitat loss and fragmentation. The Big Oaks National Wildlife Refuge (BONWR) in southeastern Indiana, the easternmost locality of crawfish frog populations, houses recently discovered populations of crawfish frogs. We studied these populations to (1) determine the diversity and distribution of genetic variability among populations at BONWR and compare this to other genetic studies of crawfish frogs and (2) examine how landscape features and distance affect the distribution of genetic variability. We used 7 microsatellite loci to genotype frogs collected …

High Prevalence Of Ranavirus Infection In Permanent Constructed Wetlands In Eastern Kentucky, Usa, Jennifer Strong Apr 2014

High Prevalence Of Ranavirus Infection In Permanent Constructed Wetlands In Eastern Kentucky, Usa, Jennifer Strong

University Presentation Showcase Event

Two important drivers of global amphibian declines are land-use change and infectious diseases. Hundreds of permanent wetlands have been constructed on ridge tops for wildlife management in eastern Kentucky within the same landscape as natural, ephemeral wetlands. Constructed wetlands support a different amphibian community than natural wetlands, and some of these species have been associated with ranavirus outbreaks. Our objective was to test for occurrence of ranavirus and amphibian chytrid fungus (Batrachochytrium dendrobatidis) in amphibian populations of natural and constructed wetlands in the Daniel Boone National Forest, Kentucky. We selected Eastern Newts (Notopthalmus viridescens) and Wood Frogs (Lithobates sylvaticus) as …

Metabolic Changes Associated With Acquired Cisplatin Resistance, Elizabeth J. Sullivan Apr 2014

Metabolic Changes Associated With Acquired Cisplatin Resistance, Elizabeth J. Sullivan

Open Access Dissertations

Although cisplatin is the drug of choice in treating a variety of different cancers, acquired resistance appears to be a common and serious drawback to its effectiveness in the clinic. Using three pairs of cisplatin-sensitive and resistant cancer cell lines, we have found significantly altered hexokinase (HK) I and II levels in cisplatin-resistant cancer cell lines. Based on our interest in utilizing glucose analogs to probe tumor metabolism, we investigated the role of HKI and HKII in cisplatin-resistant lung and ovarian cancer cell lines and asked whether these resistant cell lines could be targeted with sugar analogs under both normoxic …

Effect Of Employment On Health-Related Quality Of Life, Healthcare Expenditures, And Healthcare Utilization Of Older Adults, Diana Kachan Apr 2014

Effect Of Employment On Health-Related Quality Of Life, Healthcare Expenditures, And Healthcare Utilization Of Older Adults, Diana Kachan

Open Access Dissertations

The proportion of adults aged 65 years and over in the U.S. population is rapidly increasing due to increasing longevity, as well as decreasing fertility rates. As a result, adults aged 65+ constitute the fastest growing group among workers, and this trend is projected to continue as the baby boomer generation enters retirement age. The positive effects of employment at older age on health has been suggested by previous research, however no comprehensive examination of health status of older workers has been conducted. In addition, the effect of employment at older age on such important health outcomes as health-related qualityof …

Short-Term Peak Demand Forecasting Using An Artificial Neural Network With Controlled Peak Demand Through Intelligent Electrical Loading, Jason Lee Grant Apr 2014

Short-Term Peak Demand Forecasting Using An Artificial Neural Network With Controlled Peak Demand Through Intelligent Electrical Loading, Jason Lee Grant

Open Access Dissertations

The power output capacity of a local electrical utility is dictated by its customers’ cumulative peak-demand electrical consumption. Most electrical utilities in the United States maintain peak-power generation capacity by charging for end-use peak electrical demand; thirty to seventy percent of an electric utility’s bill. To reduce peak demand, a real-time energy monitoring system was designed, developed, and implemented for a large government building. Data logging, combined with an application of artificial neural networks (ANNs), provides short-term electrical load forecasting data for controlled peak demand. The ANN model was tested against other forecasting methods including simple moving average (SMA), linear …

Teaching Gene Regulation In The High School Classroom, Ap Biology,, Stefanie H. Baker, Marie Fox, Leigh Smith

Arthur Vining Davis High Impact Fellows Projects

This project sought to enhance high school students’ understanding of gene regulation as taught in an Advanced Placement Biology course. We accomplished this by designing and implementing a lab module that included a pre-lab assessment, a hands-on classroom experiment, and a post-lab assessment in the form of a lab poster. Students developed lab skills while simultaneously learning about course content. Students’ progress was evaluated through a multiple choice/essay test and their lab posters that they created on the lab experiment.

Health Care In The Motor City: Thriving Or Surviving?, Sally Coberly, William J. Scanlon

National Health Policy Forum

This site visit explored the forces shaping the delivery of health care in Detroit. Health care providers in Detroit face the twin challenges of controlling costs and serving a bifurcated metropolitan area that includes large numbers of uninsured, low-income, and vulnerable residents as well as more prosperous residents of a reviving inner core and the surrounding suburbs and counties. The program looked at the underlying economic, social, and physical conditions that make improving the health of the city's residents extremely challenging. Efforts to contain costs through payment innovations such as the Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan's Physician Group Incentive …
