Data Sharing Between Home Care Professionals: A Feasibility Study Using The Rai Home Care Instrument, Dawn M. Guthrie
Data Sharing Between Home Care Professionals: A Feasibility Study Using The Rai Home Care Instrument, Dawn M. Guthrie
Kinesiology and Physical Education Faculty Publications
Background: Across Ontario, home care professionals collect standardized information on each client using the Resident Assessment for Home Care (RAI-HC). However, this information is not consistently shared with those professionals who provide services in the client’s home. In this pilot study, we examined the feasibility of sharing data, from the RAI-HC, between care coordinators and service providers.
Methods: All participants were involved in a one-day training session on the RAI-HC. The care coordinators shared specific outputs from the RAI-HC, including the embedded health index scales, with their contracted physiotherapy and occupational therapy service providers. Two focus groups were …

Parenting Across The Social Ecology Facilitated By Information And Communications Technology: Implications For Research And Educational Design, Susan K. Walker, Jessie R. Rudi
Parenting Across The Social Ecology Facilitated By Information And Communications Technology: Implications For Research And Educational Design, Susan K. Walker, Jessie R. Rudi
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
To inform parenting research and aid educators seeking to deliver programs that support effective parenting, this study explored types of information and communications technology (ICT) used to fulfill childrearing goals. Mothers’ (N = 1,804) reports of ICT activity frequency were examined from data collected from an online survey. Results suggest that mothers’ ICT use for parenting is less frequent than general use in adulthood. Mothers employ ICT to fulfill parenting goals within and across five domains of the parenting social ecology: (a) parent development, (b) parent-child relationships, (c) child development, (d), family development, and (e) culture and community. Several types …
Adolescent Maternal Lifecourse Outcomes: Implications From An Integrated Mental Health Services Approach, Beth S. Russell
Adolescent Maternal Lifecourse Outcomes: Implications From An Integrated Mental Health Services Approach, Beth S. Russell
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
Family intervention literature on adolescent parenting describes the pathways between outcomes for adolescent mothers and their children and the contexts of the pregnancy itself (e.g., poverty, low or no prenatal care, lower educational attainment). The aim of these descriptions is often to inform intervention designs that promote adaptive functioning for the child, the mother, and the dyad. Mental health services are an important component of many of these interventions; these services may be delivered by a clinician within the organization providing the intervention, or the organization may connect mothers with external mental health services in their communities. Using in-house clinicians …

The Importance Of Understanding Dosage When Evaluating Parenting Programs: Lessons From A Pilot Study, Pamela B. Payne, Daniel A. Mcdonald
The Importance Of Understanding Dosage When Evaluating Parenting Programs: Lessons From A Pilot Study, Pamela B. Payne, Daniel A. Mcdonald
Journal of Human Sciences and Extension
As government resources for community programs diminish, it is vital that Cooperative Extension make greater efforts to show program efficacy. Assessing the appropriate amount of an intervention optimal for reaching desired outcomes can help inform program development and provide for a more efficient use of limited resources. The current pilot study (funded by CYFAR, NIFA, USDA award #2008-41520-04810) focuses on dosage and its effect on outcomes in parenting education delivered in four states.
The Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Families, Annie M. Debaillie
The Effects Of Traumatic Brain Injury On Families, Annie M. Debaillie
Research Papers
For individuals who sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), the disabling effects can greatly impact their life. The effects of a TBI can include physical, emotional, and cognitive impairments that can impact their ability to function in their everyday lives. The recovery process following a TBI can be extensive and costly. Many times the burden of the care and cost falls on the family of the individual with a TBI. Caring for the family member with a TBI can cause a disruption in the function of the family. This disruption can cause stress, anxiety, and burden within the family caregivers. …
The Problems And Potentials In Haunted Maternal Horror Narratives, Sarah Laura Novak
The Problems And Potentials In Haunted Maternal Horror Narratives, Sarah Laura Novak
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This thesis will examine the representation of motherhood in horror cinema in order to discuss the problems and potentials of repeated domestic traditions. While maternal horror narratives impose gender roles based on heterosexual hegemonic biases, some of these films also examine the feminine experience and criticize the patriarchal institutional structures that affect domesticity and femininity. If we discuss these promising features, we can build on the implied trajectories, and engender more representation of marginalized experience in order to seek out new methods of cultural stabilization and unity. This proposal relies on Jacques Derrida's theory of hauntology, which addresses past and …
New Emerging Technologies In Qualitative Research, Dorit Redlich-Amirav, Gene Higginbottom
New Emerging Technologies In Qualitative Research, Dorit Redlich-Amirav, Gene Higginbottom
The Qualitative Report
According to Mayan (2009) being a qualitative researcher means to "enjoy living and learning with people to collectively make sense of our world. Qualitative research is not only done with people, it is also accomplished through people…" (p. 12). By virtue of its various definitions, qualitative research involves a great deal of human communication. Communication has a major role in all aspects of qualitative research from planning to execution. While many new qualitative research technologies have evolved over the past few decades, the most critical and influential ones are those related to communication technologies. As there is limited data about …
Education Loans And Wealth Building Among Young Adults, Min Zhan, Xiaoling Xiang
Education Loans And Wealth Building Among Young Adults, Min Zhan, Xiaoling Xiang
Center for Social Development Research
This study examines the association between education loans and postcollege wealth accumulation among young adults. Data come from the 1997 National Longitudinal Survey of Youth, and the analyses control for a number of student characteristics, college experiences, and parental income. Results from a treatment-effect model indicate that having education loans upon leaving college is negatively related to postcollege net worth, financial assets, nonfinancial assets, and value of primary housing. Furthermore, having education loans also has a negative impact on the value of net worth among Black young adults. The relationship between the amount of education loans and wealth accumulation is …

In The (Radical) Pursuit Of Self-Care: Feminist Participatory Action Research With Victim Advocates, Robyn L. Homer
In The (Radical) Pursuit Of Self-Care: Feminist Participatory Action Research With Victim Advocates, Robyn L. Homer
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Despite victim advocates' missions of helping survivors of abuse, advocacy work takes a toll on workers. Advocates perform a multitude of tasks in their jobs including care work, emotional labor, and empowerment counseling which may subject them to consequences such as burnout, compassion fatigue, and compassion satisfaction. As such, this thesis details the work I conducted with the Butterfly Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault agency shelter advocates. The purpose of my thesis was to (1) document and review advocates' self-identified work-related needs and to (2) co-construct an educational intervention with the advocates using feminist participatory action research that would help …
Evidence-Based Practice Attitudes, Knowledge And Perceptions Of Barriers Among Juvenile Justice Professionals, Esther Chao Mckee
Evidence-Based Practice Attitudes, Knowledge And Perceptions Of Barriers Among Juvenile Justice Professionals, Esther Chao Mckee
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
This mixed methods study examined the attitudes, knowledge and perceptions of barriers toward Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) among Florida Juvenile Justice Service Professionals (JJSP). Previous research established individual factors such as age, gender, years of professional experience and educational attainment are related to attitudes and perceptions of barriers among social service and mental health professionals, but scant research has been conducted among juvenile justice providers (Aarons 2004, 2010; Rubin & Parrish, 2007, 2012; Jette et al., 2003). Most individual factors were found to have no significant effect on attitude and knowledge scores within this population with exception of gender and major …

The Enduring Significance Of Race In Mixed-Income Developments, Amy T. Khare, Mark L. Joseph
The Enduring Significance Of Race In Mixed-Income Developments, Amy T. Khare, Mark L. Joseph
Faculty Scholarship
While public housing reforms seek to address poverty among what is a predominantly African-American population, there has been little explicit attention given to the significance of race in the formation of new mixed-income communities. Indeed, the policy framing of these efforts has focused on economic integration and has been essentially silent about racial integration. In this article, we examine whether and how race remains relevant to the everyday life and experiences of residents in mixed-income developments. Drawing on a multiyear research study of three mixed-income developments in Chicago, we examine the nature of interracial and intraracial social dynamics within these …

Narratives Of Third Culture Kids: Commitment And Reticence In Social Relationships, Anastasia Aldelina Lijadi, Gertina J. Van Schalkwyk
The Qualitative Report
The lives of Third Culture Kids (TCKs) are characterized by their experiences of living among different worlds that could isolate them from social interaction and establishing long-term friendships. Exploring the experiences of ten TCKs, this paper reports on primary data gathered through the Collage Life Story Elicitation Technique (CLET) in order to gain an understanding of the meaning making of TCKs and their commitment and reticence in establishing relationships during their developmental years. In-depth thematic analysis indicated a struggle building intimacy and companionships and deep friendships, as well as difficulties with maintaining relationships with others and a possible fear of …

Research Within Our Everyday Reach: A Review Of Research And Social Change: A Relational Constructionist Approach, Sally St. George
The Qualitative Report
I review the 2012 book, Research and Social Change: A Relational Constructionist Approach, by Sheila McNamee and Dian Marie Hosking concentrating on two ideas critical to constructionist inquiry. I emphasize and discuss “everyday-ness” (p. 4) in relation to studying one’s own practice as well as the notion of “engaged unfolding” (p. 45) in relation to methodological decision-making.

Department of Family & Community Medicine Presentations and Grand Rounds
Background and Purpose:
The Jefferson Center for Refugee Health (JCRH), a component of Jefferson Family Medicine Associates (JFMA), is the first and largest single provider of refugee health in Philadelphia; over 1,000 refugee primary care visits are provided annually. Refugee patients are disproportionately affected by latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) compared to the general population of the United States; and though treatment of LTBI is highly effective at reducing conversion to active tuberculosis (TB), completion rates among the foreign-born are reported to be less than 50%. To establish baseline LTBI incidence and treatment completion rates for our refugee population, the JCRH …
