Using Sfbt In Hong Kong: Initiatives From Hong Kong Master Of Counselling Psychology Students And Implications For Cultural Contexts In Australia*, Ann Moir-Bussy
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) is a therapeutic approach which was developed primarily based on Western culture, beliefs and ideals. Six Master of Counsel ling Psychology students in Hong Kong participated in a clinical practicum for one semester during which they had the opportunity to apply the principles of SFBT with Chinese clients. The paper commences with an overview of the development of SFBT and counseling in Hong Kong, followed by the cultural context consider actions. Three case examples, in addition to the learnings, cultural challenges and experiences from the student counsellors are provided. The implications for the use of SFBT …

Parenting Behaviors, Adolescent Depressive Symptoms, And Problem Behavior: The Role Of Self-Esteem And School Adjustment Difficulties Among Chinese Adolescents, Cixin Wang, Yan Ruth Xia, Wenzhen Li, Stephan M. Wilson, Kevin Bush, Gary Peterson
Department of Child, Youth, and Family Studies: Faculty Publications
Cross-sectional data from 589 Chinese adolescents were used to investigate whether parenting behaviors are directly or indirectly (through self-esteem and school adjustment difficulties) associated with adolescent depressive symptoms and problem behavior. Structural equation modeling results showed that school adjustment difficulties fully mediated the relations between two parenting behaviors (parental punitiveness and paternal monitoring) and adolescent problem behavior and partially mediated the relation between maternal monitoring and adolescent problem behavior. Adolescent self-esteem partially mediated the relations between maternal punitiveness and adolescent depressive symptoms and fully mediated the relations between parental support and adolescent depressive symptoms. Parental love withdrawal was not significantly …

A total of 33 participants consisting of marriage and family therapists, masters of social work level clinicians and one doctorate level were surveyed. A self-constructed survey, created by the researcher was distributed to the participants. Results demonstrate that about one third of participants perceived art therapy to be moderately effective in reducing male and female issues surrounding childhood sexual abuse. No significant results were found when comparing the effectiveness of art therapy on males …
Dealing With Moms And Dads: Family Dilemmas Encountered By Youth Program Leaders, Aisha Griffith, Reed W. Larson
Dealing With Moms And Dads: Family Dilemmas Encountered By Youth Program Leaders, Aisha Griffith, Reed W. Larson
Journal of Youth Development
The leaders of youth programs encounter a range of challenging situations that involve youth’s parents or families. This qualitative study obtained data on the variety and nature of these family-related “dilemmas of practice.” Longitudinal interviews with leaders of 10 high quality programs for high-school-aged youth yielded narrative information on a sample of 32 family dilemmas that they had encountered. Grounded theory analysis identified four categories of family dilemmas: 1) problems at home that become a concern to the leader, 2) parents’ expectations are incongruent with program norms or functioning, 3) parents do not support youth’s participation in the program or …
Hispanic Residential Ethnic Density And Depression In Post-Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Re-Thinking The Role Of Social Support, Ellen-Ge Denton, Jonathan A. Shaffer, Carmela Alcantra, Lynn Clemow, Elizabeth Denton
Hispanic Residential Ethnic Density And Depression In Post-Acute Coronary Syndrome Patients: Re-Thinking The Role Of Social Support, Ellen-Ge Denton, Jonathan A. Shaffer, Carmela Alcantra, Lynn Clemow, Elizabeth Denton
Publications and Research
Background: The ethnic density hypothesis suggests that ethnic density confers greater social support and consequently protects against depressive symptoms in ethnic minority individuals. However, the potential benefits of ethnic density have not been examined in individuals who are facing a specific and salient life stressor.
Aims: We examined the degree to which the effects of Hispanic ethnic density on depressive symptoms are explained by socioeconomic resources and social support.
Methods: Patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS, N = 472) completed the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI) and measures of demographics, ACS clinical factors and perceived social support. Neighborhood characteristics, including median …
Group Supervision In Child Protective Service: Utilising The Miracle Question, Robert (Bob) Blundo
Group Supervision In Child Protective Service: Utilising The Miracle Question, Robert (Bob) Blundo
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
In the United States, child protective workers often find themselves in an adversarial relationship with families. They usually carry out indirect work monitor ing set treatment plans and making referrals to treatment or intervention pro grammes such as parenting courses and anger management which have limited effectiveness in reducing risk behaviours. In this descriptive study, a group of child protective workers have undergone Solution-Focused training in direct work with families and are receiving Solution-Focused supervision. The use of the miracle question is outlined in detail as an example of how workers can be encouraged to move towards a more positive, …
The Break (And Summary) In Solution Focused Brief Therapy: Its Importance And Client Experiences*, Frances Huber, Michael Durrant
The Break (And Summary) In Solution Focused Brief Therapy: Its Importance And Client Experiences*, Frances Huber, Michael Durrant
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
The end-of-session break was nominated by Steve de Shazer as an essential component of Solution-Focused Brief Therapy; yet it is an aspect often ignored or eschewed by many Solution-Focused therapists. After reviewing the history and development of the break and the end-of-session message, this paper argues that the recency effect in cognitive psychology highlights the importance of how therapists conclude their sessions and that, if the way the session ends is important, perhaps it warrants some time to consider and plan. A qualitative study suggests that the break is not only useful to therapists but that clients report that the …

A Personal View- Solution-Focused Therapy: The Research And The Literature, Where Do We Go From Here?, Alasdair Macdonald
Journal of Solution Focused Practices
After a brief reflection on the development of psychotherapy up to the present day, I summarise the current evidence base for Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Solution-Focused approaches to organisational process (130 published outcome studies). Becoming familiar with the literature has changed over the last 50 years. It is no longer a matter of chatting to colleagues in your own field. New projects are published in many countries and languages. The database is now ex tensive and we need to develop strategies and systems which will enable us to keep pace with the expanding area of knowledge. How may this …

Precarious Work Undermines Decent Work: The Unionized Hotel Workers’ Experience, Divina M. Edralin
Precarious Work Undermines Decent Work: The Unionized Hotel Workers’ Experience, Divina M. Edralin
DLSU Business & Economics Review
This paper determined the drivers and impact of precarious work on the hotel workers and their unions. Based on the proposition that precarious work undermines decent work, a descriptive study with the use of the survey method among 93 respondents from 12 unionized hotels was undertaken. Results showed that the main reason that drives the hotel management to resort to precarious work practices is to lower expenses or costs for salaries and benefits and increase profit. Precarious work has also significantly weakened the union as an organization since their membership continues to decline and their source of fund is reduced. …

Women Empowerment Through Social Initiatives: An Indian Story, Divya Singhal
Women Empowerment Through Social Initiatives: An Indian Story, Divya Singhal
DLSU Business & Economics Review
It is now proven that the relationship between business and society is integral in the success of any enterprise. With the growing role of business in society, organizations are becoming more “socially responsible” and engaging in various social initiatives. Organizations involve themselves in various kinds of initiatives generally targeted towards a selected underprivileged section of the society or a specific area like education, health, and environment. Women play an important role in building sustainable development. Promoting women empowerment and widening their contribution in decision-making roles are key strategies for sustainable development. The present paper is an attempt to highlight women …
The Writing Is The Wall: Expanding The Means Of Communication With Multimodal Approaches To Teaching Composition, Matthew Williams Schering
The Writing Is The Wall: Expanding The Means Of Communication With Multimodal Approaches To Teaching Composition, Matthew Williams Schering
All Student Theses and Dissertations
As the paradigm of communication shifts into the digital realm, it seems only logical that instructors’ pedagogical approaches to teaching writing should shift as well. Though there is still much merit to teaching tradition approaches to composition, are there more modern methods that could be employed to teach communication in a contemporary setting? This thesis shall examine the role that new media can play in a multimodal composition course, as new media seems to be the most effective way to teach rhetorical communication skills in a modern setting. By looking at new media elements, such as podcasts, wikis, and images, …
Survey Instruments Used To Evaluate Foundation-Funded Nonprofit Capacity- Building Programs: Considerations For Organized Philanthropy, Catherine H. Brown
Survey Instruments Used To Evaluate Foundation-Funded Nonprofit Capacity- Building Programs: Considerations For Organized Philanthropy, Catherine H. Brown
The Foundation Review
· Alongside a growing interest in nonprofit capacitybuilding programs has come a growing concern with the impact of these programs, especially by organizations that fund them. This article describes how the McKinsey Organizational Capacity and Assessment Tool and, to a lesser extent, the Abt Associates survey have been used to assess changes in nonprofit capacity as part of nonprofit capacity-building programs.
· Drawing on field experience with both survey instruments in the context of a foundationfunded nonprofit capacity-building program, this article compares the respective benefits and costs of these instruments from the perspective of evaluators as well as survey respondents. …
Treatment Outcomes For Mood Disorders With Concurrent Partner Relational Distress: A Comparison By Treatment Modality And Profession, Holly Pack
Theses and Dissertations
Mood disorders are often linked with concurrent partner relational distress. The present study compared the cost effectiveness of treating mood disorder alone versus when the condition is comorbid with partner relational distress. Cigna, a leading health insurance management company in the US, provided outpatient data. Participants included patients with solely a mood disorder diagnosis (n = 72,712) and those with both a mood disorder and a comorbid partner relational distress diagnosis (n = 113, including 69 females and 44 males). These participants were treated in outpatient settings throughout the US. These numbers are surprisingly low considering the extensive literature showing …
Assessing The Fit Between Child Welfare Information Systems And Frontline Workers: Development Of A Task-Technology Fit Instrument, Kurt William Heisler
Assessing The Fit Between Child Welfare Information Systems And Frontline Workers: Development Of A Task-Technology Fit Instrument, Kurt William Heisler
Health Services Research Dissertations
States and the federal government continue to invest heavily in child welfare information systems (CWIS) to improve caseworkers' performance, but the extent to which these systems meet caseworkers' needs is unclear. In the field of child welfare there are no reliable user-evaluation measures states can use to assess the degree to which a CWIS meets caseworkers' needs, and identify which specific features of the CWIS most need improvement. The study developed such a measure based on the task-technology fit (TTF) framework, which posits that users will evaluate the usefulness of a technology based on how well it meets their tasks …

Communication, Romantic Reconciliation, And Emerging Adulthood: A Relational Dialectics Study, Ashley M. Poole
Communication & Theatre Arts Theses
Building on the extant research of on-again/off-again (on-off) romantic relationships, the current thesis focused on building upon past findings by utilizing a unique theoretical methodology in an emerging demographic. A sample of 22 emergent adult (ages 18-29) participants who were currently in or had recently experienced an on-off relationship completed face-to-face interviews discussing communicative processes during romantic reconciliation. The primary purpose of this thesis was to identify and define discursive struggles found within on-off relationships during reconciliation attempts, and understand how they are used between partners to give meaning to the terms "on" and "off" as a precursor to restructuring …

Youth with substance use disorders often also face mental health challenges. Two recent studies analyzed two different treatment approaches for co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders: (1) a standardized therapy approach and (2) 12-step support groups, as modalities for effectively treating and continuing positive outcomes for young people with co-occurring mental health and substance use issues. The findings from these studies are summarized below.

BACKGROUND: Quality improvement is a central goal of the patient-centered medical home (PCMH) model, and requires the use of relevant performance measures that can effectively guide comprehensive care improvements. Existing literature suggests performance measurement can lead to improvements in care quality, but may also promote practices that are detrimental to patient care. Staff perceptions of performance metric implementation have not been well-researched in medical home settings.
OBJECTIVE: To describe primary care staff (clinicians and other staff) experiences with the use of performance metrics during the implementation of the Veterans Health Administration’s (VHA) Patient Aligned Care Team (PACT) model of care. …

The Relationship Among Counseling Supervision Satisfaction, Counselor Self-Efficacy, Working Alliance And Multicultural Factors, Jennifer Dawn Logan
Counseling & Human Services Theses & Dissertations
Supervision in counseling is essential to the personal and professional growth of counselors, and ensures client welfare (Bernard & Goodyear, 2013). The purpose of this study was to examine supervisees' perceived satisfaction with supervision, the SWA, and supervisee self-efficacy, with supervision experiences they have during practicum and/or internship. Specifically, the association these perceived levels of satisfaction, the SWA, and self-efficacy had with supervisor type (i.e., full-time faculty, adjunct faculty, or doctoral student) and student type (i.e., practicum or internship) were explored. Additionally, this study investigated how multicultural variables (i.e., race/ethnicity, gender, and degree of practice related to religious/spiritual affiliation) were …
