Social Design Principles And Practices, Inês Veiga, Rita Almendra
Social Design Principles And Practices, Inês Veiga, Rita Almendra
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Last century, a new design area bond with new aims and principles emerged, committed to answer more urgent and relevant needs of humanity. Multiple terms come forward to identify it a nd because there isn't a unifying language among its practitioners, questions have been raised about whether they refer to a general area in design or to single design practices. T his “social” vocabulary, caused so far enormous controversy and dispersion of this area in design that wants – and today it needs – to assert itself practically and theoretically. In this paper, we propose to clarify some of these …
Our Common Future? Political Questions For Designing Social Innovation, Ramia Mazé
Our Common Future? Political Questions For Designing Social Innovation, Ramia Mazé
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Design roles are expanding in society, as reflected in a growth of interest and funding for design and design research in the area of ‘social innovation’. By social innovation here, I refer to the provision of social services and resources, such as habitation, education, care, mobility and food, in which design is increasingly engaged in the complexity and dynamics of local provision of such services and resources, and in the co-production of alternatives. The question of designing for social innovation necessarily involves political questions about the role of design in how, where, by and for whom, and in what forms, …

Family Affairs Newsletter 2014-06-15, Zack Paakkonen
Family Affairs newsletter (2004-2016)
FAMILY AFFAIRS was a free, twice-a-month, social activities newsletter for the GLBTQI (gay/lesbian/bisexual/trans/queer/intersex) community, sent out around the 1st and 15th of each month. It covered the State of Maine only. The list was begun and maintained for many years by Jean Vermette in Bangor, and later operated by Zack Paakkonen of Portland. Over the years it evolved from a social activities newsletter into a business directory, classified ad service, and community bulletin board.

Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta
Teaching To The Test: A Pragmatic Approach To Teaching Logic, Seth C. Vannatta
Education and Culture
The proper goal of an introductory logic course, teaching critical thinking, is best achieved by maintaining the principle of continuity between student experiences and the curriculum. To demonstrate this I explain Dewey’s naturalistic approach to logic and the process of inquiry, one which presents the elements of traditional logic in the context of student experiences. I offer an example of a logic textbook which models the maintenance of the principle of continuity I advocate. Last, I advocate a pluralistic and experimental approach to accomplish this, including methods that rely on the role of the body in learning and reasoning.

Department of Counseling Scholarship and Creative Works
A number of developments have marked the evolution of clinical supervision as a separate specialty since publication of the Standards for Counseling Supervisors in 1990, including accreditation and counselor licensure standards, supervisor credentials, and research on supervision practice and supervisor training, nationally and internationally. Such developments culminated in the development of a statement of Supervision Best Practices Guidelines. The Guidelines are described, followed by suggestions for their implementation and further evolution through research.

Several studies have demonstrated the effect of an organization’s culture and climate on the delivery of services to clients and the success of clinical outcomes. Workers’ perceptions are integral components of organizational social context, and in order to create a positive organizational culture and climate, managers and frontline staff need to have a shared understanding of the social context. The existing literature does not adequately address that discrepancies in perceptions of culture and climate between frontline staff and managers impact the implementation of policies and services. The purpose of this study is to compare the workgroup-level culture and climate of …
Kids Alive! Support For Children Of Parents With Cancer: An Exemplar Program For Children Of Parents With Cancer, Shane Spears
Kids Alive! Support For Children Of Parents With Cancer: An Exemplar Program For Children Of Parents With Cancer, Shane Spears
Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects
Cancer in a parent or caregiver is an event that affects the whole family. The roles and responsibilities of the diagnosed parent, as well as those of each family member, are affected at the time of diagnosis and throughout the progression of the illness. According to the American Cancer Society, there will be an estimated 1,665,540 new cancer cases diagnosed and 585,720 cancer deaths in 2014. This staggering statistic means there are a number of cancer diagnoses that will directly affect thousands of parents and their children. Past research suggests this upheaval in the system is particularly stressful on children …

Effectively Working With Students Living With Disabilities, Delayne Connor, Jennifer Manak
Leading for Change
This interactive workshop will share practical ideas for developing an academic and workplace environment that supports the success of students living with disabilities. Together, we will share how we support diverse learners in our curricular and co-curricular settings and address our challenges and successes. We will examine case studies and discuss strategies that we can implement in our classrooms and our workplaces to support students living with disabilities. This session will focus on three essential aspects of serving individuals with disabilities: disability etiquette and accommodations; designing inclusive instruction and environments; and the self-awareness work necessary to address issues of disabilities.

The Effects Of Trauma On Brain Development In Infancy, Sasha Kellogg
The Effects Of Trauma On Brain Development In Infancy, Sasha Kellogg
Honors Theses
This thesis explains how trauma, which can be defined for this study as traumatic experiences, affects brain development in infants. For the purpose of this report, infants are defined as being fifteen months or younger. As gathered from the book and articles researched, typical infant brain development, including the eight processes of neurodevelopment and the four main parts of the brain, will be explained in this report, along with how the brain grows and matures. This thesis shows how maturation of the brain in infancy is dependent upon the bonds and connections infants form with others and explains how trauma …

Aligning Perspectives Of Subjective Well-Being: Comparing Spouse And Colleague Perceptions Of Social Worker Happiness, John R. Graham, Micheal L. Shier, Andrea M. Newberry, Elena Esina
The Qualitative Report
Social workers experience higher rates of burnout and attrition when compared to other health related occupational groups. Previous research on the well being of social workers has tended to focus on the social workers themselves. But the development of well-being is dynamic and is fostered through relationships and interactions with others. In the case of social workers, these relationships include workplace, professional, and personal life interactions. This research sought to better understand the level of congruence between a social worker’s perspective of well-being and perspectives held by significant people in their workplace and at home. Utilizing qualitative methods we interviewed …

BACKGROUND
- Older adults are at increased risk for falls and fall related injuries, leading to loss of independence, disability, and increased mortality.
- Preventing injury and falls is a national Healthy People 2010 objective. However, physicians and other health professionals frequently fail to incorporate known evidence into usual care. Screening for falls is not consistently performed as an essential assessment in older adults by primary care providers.
- Multidisciplinary assessment can be an important component in preventing falls in community dwelling adults.
- In new practice models, such as the Chronic Care Model, there is an emphasis on interdisciplinary collaboration, however health professions …
Nursing Students' Attitude And Knowledge Of Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle Kimzey
Nursing Students' Attitude And Knowledge Of Alzheimer's Disease, Michelle Kimzey
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
As the population ages, nurses must be prepared to provide care for the large number of people with Alzheimer's disease (PWAD). Research is limited on nursing students and people with AD, whether nursing education prepares students to care for this population, or the best methods to educate students in an insightful and collaborative environment. The aim of this mixed methods design study was to determine the effects of educational experiences on nursing students' knowledge and attitudes towards people with AD. The qualitative piece identified factors that influenced and explained differences in nursing students' knowledge and attitudes surrounding the care of …

A Dereliction Of Duty: Homeless Veterans In America, Christopher R. Fee
A Dereliction Of Duty: Homeless Veterans In America, Christopher R. Fee
English Faculty Publications
U.S. government efforts to help homeless veterans in America are not enough.
When I first began grappling with homelessness issues in my local community quite a number of years ago, Dave, then-director of the local homeless shelter in our small town, told me a story that illustrates some of the special circumstances faced by homeless veterans in America.
Dave said a community of homeless vets had based themselves in caves in the hills outside of town, and after one was stricken with pneumonia and had to be hospitalized, his ongoing recovery left health care providers with a thorny dilemma. Clearly, …

Experiencing “Ipads For All”: Results From A Library-Wide Mobile Technology Program, Michelle Armstrong, Peggy S. Cooper
Charleston Library Conference
Libraries have become iPad enthusiasts on a global scale. Librarians use the mobile device in all aspects of their work, and they are an ever present part of our patrons' lives. As a result, there is a growing need for all library staff members to be familiar with the technology. This paper explains Boise State University Albertsons Library’s use of mobile technology, specifically iPads, and the internal shifts that occurred as the library made mobile devices accessible to all library employees. Attendees explored practical issues faced when implementing the “iPads for All” approach, strategies used to encourage the adoption of …

Support When It Counts: Library Roles In Public Access To Federally Funded Research, Kristine M. Alpi, William M. Cross, Hilary M. Davis
Charleston Library Conference
In November 2012, the National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced it would begin enforcing its April 2008 mandate of public access to NIH-funded research by delaying processing of investigators’ grants reporting noncompliant publications. In response, the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Libraries offered to assist the University’s sponsored research administration in supporting NCSU researchers who had publications stemming from NIH funding and had not achieved compliance. Since the 2008 NIH mandate, over 1,000 articles based on NIH-funding have been published by NCSU across research areas including veterinary medicine, life sciences, physical sciences, social sciences, engineering, textiles, design, math, and statistics. …
Revising A Collection Development Manual: Challenges And Opportunities, Joshua M. Lupkin, Tony Bremholm, Eric Wedig
Revising A Collection Development Manual: Challenges And Opportunities, Joshua M. Lupkin, Tony Bremholm, Eric Wedig
Charleston Library Conference
Collection development manuals remain highly relevant to library strategic goals, though they are often in need of revision. Staffing models and strategic goals for liaison librarians and subject specialists are evolving rapidly with collection development competing with information literacy, scholarly communication, and digital services for time and resources. In this context, it is more and more likely for important knowledge about local and general best practices to be forgotten or neglected. At the same time, many new librarians inherit collections responsibility in a market for scholarly content in unstable formats and price models. This paper outlines the experience of Howard-Tilton …
