"My Watch Begins" : Identification And Procedural Rhetoric On Second Screens And Social Networks., K. Shannon Howard Aug 2014

"My Watch Begins" : Identification And Procedural Rhetoric On Second Screens And Social Networks., K. Shannon Howard

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Digital rhetoric creates opportunities for examining rhetoric as it evolves daily. This evolution may be described in terms of network circulation and immediate opportunities for publishing and creating. This project analyzes mobile applications and live feeds used during television broadcasts, where rhetoric is closely tied to the work of identifying with another point of view. Producers and designers of dual-screen applications prompt us to answer how we would act if we assumed the role of protagonist and saw the world through her or his eyes. These questions support the idea that identification is not just a relative of empathy or …

A Melting Pot Of Voices: Public Discourse And The Latino Immigrant Experience In The United States, Elizabeth Katherine Vammen Aug 2014

A Melting Pot Of Voices: Public Discourse And The Latino Immigrant Experience In The United States, Elizabeth Katherine Vammen

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study examines the discourses surrounding the immigrant experience in the United States to reconcile first-hand accounts of Latino immigrant experiences with the discourse prevailing in broader domains such as immigration law, public forums, non-fiction essays, and the news media. In order to break down barriers that prevent productive discussions, this analysis identifies stifling language guised under what Antonio Gramsci defines common sense rather than good sense. At the same time this study aims to deconstruct stifling language, it uses first-hand accounts from Latino immigrants to provide insight as to where the American public is not listening. By analyzing common …

Structural Causes Of Social Conflict In Africa, Lucien Charland Aug 2014

Structural Causes Of Social Conflict In Africa, Lucien Charland

HIM 1990-2015

Social conflict, as opposed to armed conflict, has received less attention in the field of quantitative research. This paper investigates the structural causes of political violence in 35 African states using data from the Social Conflict in Africa dataset and the Beck and Katz panel corrected standard errors time series regression model. Theoretically, a closed political opportunity structure, combined with a weak state unable to provide public goods, should together produce high levels of social conflict. The independent variables attempt to operationalize these concepts from four different angles. In this analysis Access to Education and Infrastructure (AEI), Ethno Linguistic Fractionalization …

Executive Power In The Obama Administration And The Decision To Seek Congressional Authorization For A Military Attack Against Syria: Implications For Theories Of Unilateral Action, Kenneth R. Mayer Aug 2014

Executive Power In The Obama Administration And The Decision To Seek Congressional Authorization For A Military Attack Against Syria: Implications For Theories Of Unilateral Action, Kenneth R. Mayer

Utah Law Review

The primary axiom of the unilateral-powers literature is that the institutional setting and political incentives that confront presidents push them to seek maximum discretion over policy. The straightforward implication is that presidents will seek control (Terry Moe calls it autonomy)—always contentious given the competitive political authority at the heart of separation of powers, but necessary to them given their interests and position in the political system. Empirically, presidents are expected to (and do) act unilaterally, moving first to put their stamp on policy and process, shape institutional structures, and alter the status quo to shift government outputs toward their preferred …

Outsiders Looking In: Advancing The Immigrant Worker Movement Through Strategic Mainstreaming, Jennifer J. Lee Aug 2014

Outsiders Looking In: Advancing The Immigrant Worker Movement Through Strategic Mainstreaming, Jennifer J. Lee

Utah Law Review

The immigrant worker movement faces the age-old problem of social movements: whether change should be pursued from the inside or outside. Shaped by dominant cultural norms, the current legal framework generally disadvantages immigrant workers. They suffer from workplace exploitation, anti-immigrant hostility, and exclusion. By examining the interplay between law and culture, this Article offers a unique perspective on how immigrant workers have the power to change law through cultural narratives.

Change pursued from the inside by immigrant workers, community advocates, and public interest attorneys has more immediately provided positive results for immigrant workers. They have done so by mainstreaming immigrant …

"All Good Things Flow . . . ": Rule Of Law, Public Goods, And The Divided American Metropolis, James J. Kelly Jr. Aug 2014

"All Good Things Flow . . . ": Rule Of Law, Public Goods, And The Divided American Metropolis, James J. Kelly Jr.

Emory Law Journal Online

This essay is a review of and a response to Urban Decay, Austerity, and Rule of Law, an article written by Brent White, Simone Sepe, and Saura Masconale. Building upon an intuitively compelling social contract theory insight, the article sets out the theoretical and empirical cases for the authors' contention that sustained investment in highly visible, essential local public goods provides crucial support for rule of law. In this invited response, Professor Kelly welcomes the article's introduction of the rule of law paradigm to domestic urban policy, finds fault with its selection of public goods that purportedly influence rule of …

Wideband And Narrowband Spectrum Sensing Methods Using Software Defined Radios, Jason Karl Stegman Aug 2014

Wideband And Narrowband Spectrum Sensing Methods Using Software Defined Radios, Jason Karl Stegman

Theses

The ability to accurately sense the surrounding wireless spectrum, without having any prior information about the type of signals present, is an important aspect for dynamic spectrum access and cognitive radio. Energy detection is one viable method, however its performance is limited at low SNR and must adhere to Nyquist sampling theorem. Compressive sensing has emerged as a potential method to recover wideband signals using sub-Nyquist sampling rates, under the presumption that the signals are sparse in a certain domain. In this study, the performance and some of the practical limitations of energy detection and compressive sensing are compared via …

Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley Aug 2014

Stakeholder Perceptions Of A University Response To Crisis, Katherine M. Kelley

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to contribute to current theory-driven research in crisis communication by examining the perceptions of multiple stakeholder groups to a university crisis response strategy. Two main questions were examined in this dissertation. The first question attempted to determine if a significant difference existed between stakeholder groups and their perception of university reputation, responsibility for the crisis, and potential supportive behaviors toward the university following the university’s response to a crisis. The second asked if Coombs’s Situational Crisis Communication Theory is a practical application for universities.

The participants were from 4 stakeholder groups associated with a …

Exploring The Perception Towards Enhancing Credentials By Certification Of Latent Fingerprint Examiners In The Southern United States, Christopher G. Brewer Aug 2014

Exploring The Perception Towards Enhancing Credentials By Certification Of Latent Fingerprint Examiners In The Southern United States, Christopher G. Brewer

Honors Theses

With several applications of forensic processes coming into question, becoming a reputable expert witness in a court of law can be dire. This pilot study explores the professional opinions of latent fingerprint examiners employed by state criminal investigation departments. Research was geared towards measuring the notion that gaining certification through institutions such as the International Association for Identification (IAI) aids in the perception of latent fingerprint examiners’ credibility and confidence as expert witnesses. The sample population of latent fingerprint examiners (LFPEs) was gathered using a digital survey issued to the forensic laboratories and divisions housed within state criminal investigation units. …

Putting The Microscope On Crime Labs: The Effects Of Evidence Complexity And Laboratory Type On Jurors' Perceptions Of Forensic Evidence, Miliaikeala S.J. Heen

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

An experiment was conducted to test the effects of evidence complexity and laboratory type on jurors' perceptions of forensic evidence. The study specifically focused on three types of labs: public labs, private labs, and "corporate labs." Public labs are managed by a federal, state, or local law enforcement agency, where evidence is usually analyzed internally at an agency. Private labs are those that have been formed as private businesses to provide services to federal, state, and local crime labs with overflow work. Corporate labs are managed by major retail corporations, and primarily service the needs of their store businesses, but …

The Impact Of Food Manufacturers’ Recall Notifications On The Tone Of Newspaper Coverage, Monique L. Farmer Aug 2014

The Impact Of Food Manufacturers’ Recall Notifications On The Tone Of Newspaper Coverage, Monique L. Farmer

College of Journalism and Mass Communications: Theses

This study examined whether attributes focused on within food recall notifications issued by food companies have an impact on the tone of the associated, subsequent news coverage. Additionally, the study examined second-level agenda building to determine whether attributes emphasized in food recall notifications showed up in resulting news coverage.

The findings suggest that the most significant attribute for crisis communicators to focus on during the agenda-building process of a food recall event is instructional messaging. This aspect of the crisis communication messaging strategy is positively correlated with a positive tone in news coverage.

Specifically, this research study found some tentative …

New Bsn Nurse Informatics Competencies: Perceptions Of Academic Preparedness For Practice, Teri Montgomery Boyd

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

One rapidly expanding nursing program at a public research university in the mid-south region of the United States served as the site for this study. Recent nurse graduates were selected in a purposeful sampling from alumni who had conferred degrees from May 2007 through May 2013. Sixty-three graduates completed the online survey in Phase I and five recent graduates participated in semi-structured interviews during Phase II of the study. Data were collected utilizing a mixed methods design. Descriptive statistics explained survey and interview results. Of the knowledge, skills, and attitudes (KSAs), attitude competencies reported the highest means and were very …
