Challenges And Opportunities Related To Landing The Dream Chaser® Commercial Reusable Space Vehicle At A Public-Use Airport, Brian Gulliver, Cassie Lee, Frank Taylor, Ken Ibold, Christopher Allison

Space Traffic Management Conference

Sierra Nevada Corporation’s (SNC) Space Systems is developing the Dream Chaser® reusable space vehicle for NASA’s Commercial Crew Program. The Dream Chaser is a lifting body vehicle that lands on a runway similar to the Space Shuttle. Unlike the Shuttle, the Dream Chaser does not require any unique landing aids or specialized equipment as it uses all non-toxic propellants and industry standard subsystems. This allows for immediate access to crew and cargo at wheels-stop. Requiring only 8,000 ft/2,400 m of runway for landing, the Dream Chaser is compatible with numerous public runways. There are, however, unique and complex challenges …

Challenges For A South Texas Spaceport, Edward Ellegood, Wayne Eleazer

Space Traffic Management Conference

With approval of an environmental assessment by the FAA, SpaceX has decided to proceed with development of a new spaceport south of Brownsville, Texas, for launching commercial satellites into equatorial orbits. The company plans to launch (and potentially land) its vehicles within a very limited corridor to avoid overflight of populated landmasses in Mexico, Cuba, Jamaica, and Florida. In establishing a range safety capability that meets FAA requirements, SpaceX will also have to devise plans for dealing with domestic and international maritime traffic, oil drilling operations, and commercial air traffic corridors. This paper will detail some of the technical, safety, …

Space Traffic Management And Surface Transportation: Operating Concepts For Commercial Spaceports, Jim Ball Nov 2014

Space Traffic Management And Surface Transportation: Operating Concepts For Commercial Spaceports, Jim Ball

Space Traffic Management Conference

The management of space traffic begins with the integration of space launch and re-entry activities into the multi-modal environment of surface transportation. Most of the discussion and conceptual development of space transportation management to date has been focused on the integration of commercial space transportation into the National Airspace System (NAS). But there is also a need for spaceport site planning and operating concepts that effectively and safely integrate commercial space launch and re-entry into the established transportation infrastructure of various surface systems -- highways, railways, and waterways. The market demand for exclusively commercial spaceport capacity to meet the schedule …

Influence Of Nonnative And Native Ungulate Biomass And Seasonal Precipitation On The Vegetation Production In A Great Basin Ecosystem, Linda C. Zeigenfuss, Kathryn A. Schoenecker, Jason I. Ransom, Drew A. Ignizio, Tracy Mask Nov 2014

Ignizio, Tracy Mask

Western North American Naturalist

The negative effects of equid grazers in semi-arid ecosystems of the American West has been considered to be disproportionate to the influence of native ungulates in these systems because of their large body size, hoof shape, and short history on the landscape relative to native grazers. Tools which can model the degree of influence of various grazers in an ecosystem and separate these effects from those caused by other variables (climate, anthropomorphic disturbances) can be useful to managers in determining location of non-native grazer impacts and assessing the effect of management actions targeted at different grazer populations. We used remotely …

Evaluating Gps Effectiveness For Natural Resource Professionals: Integrating Undergraduate Students In The Decision-Making Process, Daniel Unger, I-Kuai Hung, Yanli Zhang, David Kulhavy

Faculty Publications

Undergraduate students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Forestry (BSF) degree at Stephen F. Austin State University (SFA) attend an intensive 6-week residential hands-on instruction in applied field methods. For students pursuing the BSF degree knowing the exact location of a forestland is crucial to the understanding and proper management of any related natural resource. The intensive 6-week instruction includes teaching how to use the Global Positioning System (GPS) to accurately record the spatial location of an earth’s surface feature. After receiving hands-on instructions during the summer of 2014, students were taken to the field to collect real-world locations. Students …

Labor In Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of Hosanna-Tabor V. Eeoc Through The European Court Of Human Rights' Religious Employer Jurisprudence, Francesca M. Genova Nov 2014

Labor In Faith: A Comparative Analysis Of Hosanna-Tabor V. Eeoc Through The European Court Of Human Rights' Religious Employer Jurisprudence, Francesca M. Genova

Notre Dame Law Review

This Note uses the European Court of Human Rights’ framework to analyze the Supreme Court’s decision in Hosanna-Tabor v. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, which recognizes a “ministerial exception” for religious organizations as a defense to certain employment claims. It argues that the unanimous Supreme Court in Hosanna-Tabor examines factors similar to those of its European counterpart, but protects religious liberties more robustly by avoiding some of the European Court’s preoccupations. Yet, the European Court’s assessment anticipates the difficulties of applying the “ministerial exception” in future cases.

Immigration Surveillance, Anil Kalhan Nov 2014

Immigration Surveillance, Anil Kalhan

Maryland Law Review

In recent years, immigration enforcement levels have soared, yielding a widely noted increase in the number of noncitizens removed from the United States. Less visible, however, has been an attendant sea change in the underlying nature of immigration governance itself, hastened by new surveillance and dataveillance technologies. Like many other areas of contemporary governance, immigration control has rapidly become an information-centered and technology-driven enterprise. At virtually every stage of the process of migrating or traveling to, from, and within the United States, both noncitizens and U.S. citizens are now subject to collection and analysis of extensive quantities of personal information …

A Phenomenological Study Of The Lived Experiences Of Undocumented Latino Students To Enroll In And Persist At A Four-Year Public Hispanic-Serving Institution In Texas, Angela C. Stuart-Carruthers

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Undocumented students in the United States are trapped in a myriad of completing federal, state, and local laws that impact their lives daily. While approximately 60,000 undocumented students graduate from high school each year, the college going rate for this population is substantially lower than their documented peers. Since President Obama signed the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals executive order, undocumented students have gained national attention. Despite this new focus on undocumented students few studies have been conducted to gain a deeper understanding of the live experiences of these students.

Framed by Tinto’s (1993) Theory of Student Departure and Latino …

Part II gives a brief background of the facts and circumstances surrounding the Hart decision. Part III discusses the history of the Eighth Amendment and explores the U.S. Supreme Court’s trend toward leniency in the imposition of punishments, culminating with a discussion of the Miller decision. Part IV delves into the Supreme Court of Missouri’s reasoning behind its decision in Hart and the temporary sentencing procedures the court provided.
