Is Our Service In Vain? Relevant Roles Of An Extension Service As Perceived By County-Level Employees, Thelma C. Barnes Dec 2014

Is Our Service In Vain? Relevant Roles Of An Extension Service As Perceived By County-Level Employees, Thelma C. Barnes

Journal of Extension

Agriculture continues to be the primary focus of most Extension organizations, although farming operations decreased significantly between 1950 and 1997. Extension organizations have been encouraged to redirect program focuses to be inclusive of nontraditional audiences and to remain vital. These organizations should identify and adopt new roles to avoid an impending demise. This article summarizes research conducted to identify relevant organizational roles as perceived by county-level Extension employees working for an Extension service in the Southeastern United States. These roles can be used as a foundation for planning and implementing programs that are conducive to the needs of today's clientele.

Creating Safe Spaces Within Extension Programs, Adrienne Duke

Journal of Extension

Extension agents, educators, and specialists are challenged to find effective ways to ensure that our participants learn in program contexts that are inclusive and respectful of all people. In order to make our programs inclusive environments, it is important for us to be brave enough to disrupt statements that are demeaning and marginalize others. This article gives practical ways to deal with statements made by participants that are grounded in prejudice, discrimination, stereotyping, and scapegoating.

Abstract

Ireland is the third most globalised nation in the world - Ernest and Young 2013 report

This reflective paper addresses key drivers of organisational change (including globalisation as referred to in the quote above) and what this means at the level of the organisation and at the level of the Lacanian subject[1] (individual employee). It looks at strategies organisations are adopting to survive in a hyper competitive environment and how these strategies are interpreted / responded to by the subject. The paper utilises a Freudian / Lacanian lens to interrogate subjective responses to organisational change. For some subjects …

Academic And Commercial Qualitative Research: The Best Of Both Worlds, Ronald J. Chenail

The Qualitative Report Conference

With apologies to George Bernard Shaw, academic qualitative research and commercial qualitative research have been “two countries separated by a common language,” but this cultural divide has its positives because these divergent customs present opportunities for mutual innovation. Today we will explore these differences and offer enhancements for both worlds.

The Relationship Between Nursing Excellence And Electronic Health Record Adoption, Christine Lippincott Nov 2014

The Relationship Between Nursing Excellence And Electronic Health Record Adoption, Christine Lippincott

Open Access Dissertations

The United States government has invested over a billion dollars to support the nationwide implementation, adoption, and “meaningful use” (MU) of electronic health record (EHR) technology. The American Reinvestment and Recovery Act of 2009 represents just one example of how the delivery of healthcare services is evolving from a fee-for-service to a pay-for-performance model that is data-driven. Under the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) Meaningful Use (MU) Program, hospitals that fail to demonstrate how their use of electronic health record systems improves patient outcomes will not only lose EHR incentive payments, but could face financial penalties beginning as …

Session presented on Sunday, July 27, 2014:

Purpose: Research supports that evidence-based practice (EBP) promotes high value healthcare, including enhancing the quality and reliability of healthcare, improving health outcomes and reducing variations in care and costs. Even with its tremendous benefits, EBP is not the standard of care that is practiced consistently by clinicians throughout the United States and globe. Although there is a general expectation of healthcare systems globally for nurses to engage in EBP, much uncertainty exists about what exactly that level of engagement encompasses. Lack of clarity about EBP expectations and specific EBP competencies that nurses and …

For over 70 years, the Accrediting Council on Education in Journalism and Mass Communications (ACEJMC) has been the agency that provided leadership in this endeavor. This study surveyed administrators of programs of accredited and also non-accredited journalism programs at Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs), asking them to critique and discuss their thoughts on the nine standards. Nearly unanimously the administrators agreed that accreditation, or as those not accredited stated, “best practices”, are essential. The study focused on …

From Zen To C-Level, Carie Martin

Learning Showcase 2014

From the non-stop pull of smart phones to overcommitted working parents, the average American worker is constantly plugged in and on the go. Such a cognitive overload can have dire consequences. These consequences include: memory and concentration problems; hostility and aggression; anxiety; and poor judgment (Smith, 2014). These effects of overload most certainly decrease the effectiveness of work productivity. To get the best out of their employees, restoring their wellbeing and re-engaging them at work should be of value to organizations across the country.

Being mindful can increase wellbeing and engagement in activities along with improving concentration. Mindfulness also decreases …

Healthcare Expansion Of Scope, Steve Adkins Nov 2014

Healthcare Expansion Of Scope, Steve Adkins

Learning Showcase 2014

The healthcare system of OhioHealth has a reputation for providing quality care. As with any healthcare system, there are some populations who are underserved. There are several changes OhioHealth can make to enlarge its customer base. Some of the techniques OhioHealth can use involve increasing its scope of practice in these areas: complementary and alternative medicine (CAM), long-term care, men’s bone health, and social media. The need for long-term care will continue to increase as the population ages. OhioHealth can merge with a long-term care company to provide OhioHealth with the facilities. This strategy is more likely to be successful …

Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton Nov 2014

Information System Security Commitment: A Study Of External Influences On Senior Management, Kevin Andrew Barton

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation investigated how senior management is motivated to commit to information system security (ISS). Research shows senior management participation is critical to successful ISS, but has not explained how senior managers are motivated to participate in ISS. Information systems research shows pressures external to the organization have greater influence on senior managers than internal pressures. However, research has not fully examined how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS. This study addressed that gap by examining how external pressures motivate senior management participation in ISS through the lens of neo-institutional theory. The research design was survey research. Data …

Reduction of water losses is one of the biggest challenges today in the industry of water treatment. Large amount of raw water is lost and thus the loss has very high cost and increases shortages of regular water supply. Today’s world faces the loss of water and the best situation is in developed countries, while in developing countries and undeveloped ones, water loss is in the rate of >50%. Thesis will present practical experience in reducing technical losses in a measuring area (DMA) in Regional Water Company “Prishtina”, where losses now have a trend towards reduction. Monitoring of flow and …

How Successful Were Quakers At Science?, Geoffrey Cantor Nov 2014

How Successful Were Quakers At Science?, Geoffrey Cantor

Quaker Studies

The impressively high proportion of Quakers in the Royal Society has often been cited to support the claim that Quakers have been far more successful at science than the general population. However, this supporting evidence is shown to be highly problematic and demonstrably false. Moreover, attempts to establish the superiority of Quakers in science have diverted attention away from more interesting and important historical questions.

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols Nov 2014

Social Desire Paths: A New Theoretical Concept To Increase The Usability Of Social Science Research In Society, Laura Nichols

Sociology

Social scientists are well-trained to observe and chart social trends, but less experienced at presenting scientific findings in formats that can inform social change work. In this article, I propose a new theoretical concept that provides a mechanism by which social science research can be more effectively applied for proactive policy, organizational, and program development. The approach is to use the metaphor of “desire paths” from landscape architecture to show how social scientists can identify and analyze social desire paths that appear on the social structural landscape. Social desire paths usually emerge because existing formal structures do not meet individual …

Our title boldly asserts that the future must be acknowledged. We are not assuming the role of prophets, but rather of alert communicators. The library and archive sector needs institutional reform to improve efficiencies, foster more effective collaboration, and provide clearer, more reliable leadership. The Report synthesizes what we have heard and learned from Canadians. It conveys verbal and visual snapshots of transformative, energetic, forceful cultural institutions, either already flourishing or in planning stages. It also underlines the urgency of the present moment when disregard or neglect must be challenged and countered. First and foremost, in the digital era, libraries …
