Improving Community Health Through Hospital-Public Health Collaboration: Insights And Lessons Learned From Successful Partnerships, Lawrence Prybil, F. Douglas Scutchfield, Rex Killian, Ann Kelly, Glen P. Mays, Angela Carman, Samuel Levey, Anne Mcgeorge, David W. Fardo

Health Management and Policy Faculty Book Gallery

From the introduction:

Health care expenditures in the United States currently consume over 17 percent of the nation’s gross domestic product, a much larger share than other developed nations. Yet, despite this large investment, studies by Commonwealth Fund, the Institute of Medicine, and other organizations show the USA lags behind other developed nations on multiple metrics of population health such as infant mortality and life expectancy. Moreover, there is extensive evidence of disparities in access, cost, and quality of health care services.

Thus, we are confronted by a striking paradox: the USA spends a large and growing proportion of our …

Change, Leadership And Change-Oriented Leadership Theories In Higher Education: A Review, M. Ghasemy, S. Hussin Nov 2014

Change, Leadership And Change-Oriented Leadership Theories In Higher Education: A Review, M. Ghasemy, S. Hussin

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Universities in 21st century are playing an important role in fostering the next generations of leaders who would be capable of dealing with significant economic, social, cultural and environmental challenges. However, higher education institutions need to be sustainably developed in order to have the potentials to contribute to the development of the societies as well. This shows that major changes must be planned, implemented and maintained in the context of higher education to transform the universities to the entities which can operate in the turbulent environment effectively and efficiently. Thus, the practical application of relevant theories of change and leadership …

Tipping Point Of Resistance: A Multi-Case Study Of The Influence Of School Culture On Classroom Positive Behavior Interventions And Support Practices, Angela Shoemake

Doctoral Dissertations and Projects

Public schools have seen an increase in the use of school-wide positive behavior intervention supports (SWPBIS) to address the emotional and behavioral needs of students. While SWPBIS is a validated, evidence-based practice, teachers often resist the use of this proactive intervention model claiming that they do not have the time or skills to develop interventions to address the students' challenging behaviors. The purpose of this instrumental multi-case study was to systematically explore and compare the personal experiences of staff who ended their resistance to SWPBIS and successfully implemented at the classroom level. A Georgia middle school implementing SWPBIS at the …

Social Workers As Social Change Agents: Social Innovation, Social Intrapreneurship, And Social Entrepreneurship, Monica Nandan, Manuel London, Tricia Bent-Goodley

Faculty Articles

This article explores and describes social innovation, social intrapreneurship, and social entrepreneurship practiced by social workers within human service organizations. Each year, the nature and complexity of clients’ problems and challenges experienced by communities continuously evolves and grows. These challenges call for social workers to lead and facilitate social change that can have a lasting impact on communities and people. The authors report findings from an exploratory, descriptive study conducted with ten social workers on these practices. The findings point to the need to develop and integrate these contents within social work education and further promote dual-degree graduate programs.

Ethics Education In Professional Psychology: A Survey Of American Psychological Association Accredited Programs, Melanie M. Domenech-Rodriguez, Jennifer A. Erickson Cornish, Janet T. Thomas, Linda Forrest, Austin J. Anderson, James N. Bow

Psychology Faculty Publications

Professional psychologists are expected to know ethical standards and engage in proactive analysis of ethical considerations across professional roles (e.g., practice, research, teaching). Yet, little is known about the current state of doctoral ethics education in professional psychology, including the content covered and pedagogical strategies used to ensure developing this core component of professional competency (de las Fuentes, Willmuth, & Yarrow, 2005). A survey of ethics educators from APAaccredited programs across the United States and Canada resulted in 136 instructors reporting on their program's ethics training. The majority of questionnaires returned were from PhD programs (77.9%). A substantial number of …

The Role Of Leadership In Creating A Strategic Climate For Evidence-Based Practice Implementation And Sustainment In Systems And Organizations, Gregory A. Aarons, Mark G. Ehrhart, Lauren R. Farahnak, Marisa Sklar Oct 2014

The Role Of Leadership In Creating A Strategic Climate For Evidence-Based Practice Implementation And Sustainment In Systems And Organizations, Gregory A. Aarons, Mark G. Ehrhart, Lauren R. Farahnak, Marisa Sklar

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

There is a growing impetus to effectively implement evidence-based practices (EBPs) in health and allied health settings in order to improve the public health impact of such practices. To support implementation and sustainment of EBPs, it is important to consider that health care is delivered within the outer context of public health systems and the inner context of health care organizations and work groups (3). This article identifies two relevant types of leadership for implementation and recommends steps that leaders can take in developing a strategic climate for EBP implementation and sustainment within the outer and inner contexts of health …

Editorial Comment: What Influences The Use Of Administrative Evidence-Based Practices In Local Health Departments?, Christopher M. Maylahn

Frontiers in Public Health Services and Systems Research

In 2012, Frontiers published an article by Allen et al. about identifying administrative and management practices that make up an evidence-based local health department.1 They recommended that local health departments (LHDs) consider using such practices to implement sustained evidence-based policies, programs, and interventions. Strategies that should be given ‘high priority’ for implementation were highlighted. My accompanying editorial2 acknowledged the value of this practical advice to LHDs in optimizing their performance and achieving desired health outcomes.

Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway Oct 2014

Managerial Use Of Text Messaging In International Organizations, José Guadalupe Torres, Roger Conaway

Global Advances in Business Communication

When organizational employees adopt and use various communication technologies in the workplace, the process of choosing such media has emerged as a complex one. Numerous variables impact the decisions of employees and managers when they implement these technologies. Our study adapted van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge’s (2005) assessment instrument for email usage to text messaging in international companies. Our results reflected similar findings as van den Hooff, Groot, & de Jonge (2005) in most subscales of the instrument. Specifically, we investigated the extent to which managers had used and applied text messaging in organizational settings. We utilized a …

A Resource-Based View Of Entrepreneurial Creativity And Its Implications To Entrepreneurship Education, Jing Lin, Anja Svetina Nabergoj Oct 2014

A Resource-Based View Of Entrepreneurial Creativity And Its Implications To Entrepreneurship Education, Jing Lin, Anja Svetina Nabergoj

Economic and Business Review

For entrepreneurs creative problem solving and innovation are key capabilities that can be built through experience and entrepreneurial learning. Unfortunately entrepreneurial education has received increased criticism over the past decade suggesting that entrepreneurship courses do not sufficiently emphasize development of creative capabilities. Although several scholars and educators emphasize the need for nurturing creativity in entrepreneurial education it remains unclear how to efficiently stimulate the creativity pertinent to entrepreneurial contexts. The aim of our study is to show how the logics of RBV theory can be used to explain the creative behaviours of entrepreneurs in which EC is manifested in resource …

Substance Abuse Prevention In American Indian And Alaska Native Communities: Exploration Of Guiding Theoretical Underpinnings And Theoretical Fit In Practice, Margaret L. Walsh Oct 2014

Substance Abuse Prevention In American Indian And Alaska Native Communities: Exploration Of Guiding Theoretical Underpinnings And Theoretical Fit In Practice, Margaret L. Walsh

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to identify ways Indigenous theoretical perspectives may guide current and future substance abuse prevention programs. As the majority of current theories guiding substance abuse prevention programs in American Indian and Alaska Native communities stem from Western ideologies and lack Indigenous perspectives, there is a paucity of research on theoretical underpinnings for Indigenous perspectives in AI/AN communities and their potential role in substance abuse prevention programming. It is well known that when programs are theoretically connected to the communities in which they are implemented, they are more likely to be accepted, accurately measured, and sustained …

Fundamental Changes In The Llc: A Study In Path-Divergence And Convergence, Joan Macleod Heminway Oct 2014

Fundamental Changes In The Llc: A Study In Path-Divergence And Convergence, Joan Macleod Heminway

Scholarly Works

Issues relating to fundamental changes in LLCs — matters such as amendments to organizational documents, mergers, conversions, domestications, and dissolutions — have received little consideration in the law literature. While they are regular occurrences in the lifecycle of a firm, they are not in front of an LLC’s management or legal counsel every day. Having said that, they are critically important aspects of the law governing LLCs, especially in transformative times. This draft book chapter, written for the forthcoming Research Handbook on Partnerships, LLCs and Alternative Forms of Business Organizations (Robert W. Hillman & Mark J. Loewenstein eds., Edward Elgar …

The Case For A Modern Euskara: Proposed Structural Changes To Euskara Batua, Ambrose Goikoetxea Oct 2014

The Case For A Modern Euskara: Proposed Structural Changes To Euskara Batua, Ambrose Goikoetxea

BOGA: Basque Studies Consortium Journal

This paper comes into being because of this author’s concern about the limited use and slow evolution of Euskara Batua, the version of the Basque language spoken today in parts of the Basque Country and the larger B, also called Euskal Herria, with its historical regions in Europe, bounded by Spain in the south and by France in the north, as well as in dozens of Basque communities in the USA, Central, and South America. What’s the problem? Well, currently the number of auxiliary verbs (verbal forms, aditz languntzaileak) in Euskara Batua as proposed by the Euskaltzaindia, the Academy of …

Good News For A Change, Eric Shoaf

South Carolina Libraries

Technology, user needs and expectations, and the evolving role of the library in society are all driving a pace of change not seen previously in the library world. As library workers confront this environment of flux, many seek to understand the change process and their response to its pervasiveness. This article adapts a model of change developed in a different sphere and proposes its use in the library environment in order to assist library workers and provide a process that can alleviate some of the stress of change.

Stakeholder Communication In Proposing Change, Maria Dwyer Oct 2014

Stakeholder Communication In Proposing Change, Maria Dwyer

Proceedings of the New York State Communication Association

Abstract

This paper proposes a model for the understanding and management of curriculum change in the academy. The model links Ruben’s five stages in the planning and management of change with his five crucial stages in the change process to provide a way to understand and manage the curriculum change process. Additionally, Ruben’s framework is linked to Lewis’ Stakeholder Communication Model which is particularly sensitive to stakeholder’s perceptions and assessments of each other. It helps to further explain and direct the efforts necessary to manage the proposal and process of change. In essence, this model integrates theory into practical matters. …

Librarians As Information Trainers: Using Training Techniques To Improve Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Reinauer Oct 2014

Librarians As Information Trainers: Using Training Techniques To Improve Information Literacy Instruction, Olivia Reinauer

Georgia International Conference on Information Literacy

Just as a trainer addresses the continuing education needs of employees in the workplace, librarians teach research skills needed to improve academic performance. Like trainers, librarians are frequently asked to meet specific learning objectives within the span of a single session, and they must navigate the challenge of meeting and motivating a new group of participants each time. There is a wealth of information available on designing and delivering training, yet a review of the library literature shows little evidence of direct adoption of these techniques for library instruction.

This presentation will outline best practices in training design, delivery, and …

Design And Validation Of An Evaluation Checklist For Organizational Readiness For Evaluation Capacity Development, Connie F. Walker-Egea Oct 2014

Design And Validation Of An Evaluation Checklist For Organizational Readiness For Evaluation Capacity Development, Connie F. Walker-Egea

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Evaluation capacity development (ECD) has been acknowledged as a system of processes to help organizations achieve sustainable evaluation practice. Examining the existing evaluation capacity of an organization before starting an ECD process is necessary and will increase the possibilities of success, determined by the establishment or strengthening of an evaluation system into the organization. In response to this need, this study involved the designing of the Organizational Readiness for Evaluation Capacity Development (ORECD) checklist and its initial validation, using a mixed method research design. The study was conducted in four phases, including: (a) the design of the ORECD checklist based …

Using Latent Profile Regression To Explore The Relationship Between Religiosity And Work-Related Ethical Judgments, Alan G. Walker, L. Allison Jones-Farmer, Jason D. Debode, James W. Smither, Raymond D. Smith Oct 2014

Using Latent Profile Regression To Explore The Relationship Between Religiosity And Work-Related Ethical Judgments, Alan G. Walker, L. Allison Jones-Farmer, Jason D. Debode, James W. Smither, Raymond D. Smith

Journal of Religion and Business Ethics

Utilizing social structural symbolic interactionist theorizing about self-identity as presented by Weaver and Agle (2002) we obtained data related to five key measures of religiosity believed to be critical for understanding religiosity’s influence on ethical judgments. Using our five key religiosity measures we then fit a latent profile regression model to explore whether and how these constructs related to one another and to work-related ethical judgments. Results revealed that both our analytic and theoretical frameworks (latent profile regression and symbolic interactionism) were helpful in identifying religious profiles which are helpful for understanding the relationship between religiosity and work-related ethical judgments. …

Staff Works - Hunt Library

This article describes the use of scenarios as a tool to assist a large distance learning library service in its strategic planning. Through a description of the scenario process from beginning to end, the authors detail the steps that the library director and the consultant took initially; their missteps; and the successful conclusion. This study of the journey through the scenario process to a new strategic plan should prove useful to library administrators interested in exploring new ways to plan for uncertain futures.

Designing A Sustainable And Transferable Inventory Management System For Small Healthcare Facilities, Shree Frazier Oct 2014

Designing A Sustainable And Transferable Inventory Management System For Small Healthcare Facilities, Shree Frazier

Open Access Theses

Managing the costs of supplies within healthcare facilities has been a task that has plagued the health industry for many years. Many facilities are accustomed to using a par system approach. This involves bringing an inventory item to an amount sufficient for daily operation. This method often requires daily inspection by a healthcare worker, which reduces his/her time spent performing value added tasks. Employees at small healthcare facilities have multiple responsibilities, therefore they cannot afford to spend much time on inventory management. A proposed approach is the Kanban method, which allows for strict monitoring of inventory items without the need …

Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz Oct 2014

Benchmarking Professional Development Practices Across Youth-Serving Organizations: Implications For Extension, Barry A. Garst, Sarah Baughman, Nancy Franz

Publications

Examining traditional and contemporary professional development practices of youth-serving organizations can inform practices across Extension, particularly in light of the barriers that have been noted for effectively developing the professional competencies of Extension educators. With professional development systems changing quickly, particularly through online education and blended learning opportunities, benchmarks need to guide new research around best practices in professional development. Although many program providers have not established benchmarks for professional development, a few cases exist. This article examines the current state of professional development practices of youth-serving organizations and offers recommendations for improving Extension professional development practices.

Transforming A System: Leadership To Implement An Intervention And Referral Services Process That Assists Teachers, Michael Lee Oct 2014

Transforming A System: Leadership To Implement An Intervention And Referral Services Process That Assists Teachers, Michael Lee

Theses and Dissertations

Improving instruction to meet diverse student needs via early, intensive, and continuing intervention is an essential part of a comprehensive strategy to serve all students now and to produce the graduates 21st century society requires. Yet, meaningful school reform with transforming leadership, innovative vision, conversations among teachers, and authentic student achievement still remains elusive today. Our limitations in putting new ideas into practice come not from a lack of will or effort, but, in part, from the influences of our personal stories, mental models, and an immunity to change. This action research study explores educators' perceptions and behaviors in implementing …

Effects Of Psychological Contract Breaches On Mergers And Acquisitions, Kristine M. Murphy Oct 2014

Effects Of Psychological Contract Breaches On Mergers And Acquisitions, Kristine M. Murphy

Doctoral Dissertations

This study investigates breaches in the psychological employment contract during mergers and acquisitions. An employee's contract is incomplete in regards to mergers and acquisitions (M&A). In its place, psychological contracts are formed. Common psychological contracts breached in the M&A process include raises, bonuses, promotions, job responsibilities, job security, and career development. Employees who have experienced an M&A were surveyed to test the severity of various psychological contract breaches and their effect on employee performance, organizational citizenship behavior, job satisfaction, organizational deviance, and turnover using t-tests, Structural Equation Modeling, and ANOVA. The mediating effect of feelings of violation was also tested. …
