Sustainability In Is Projects: A Case Study, A.J. Gilbert Silvius, Snezana Nedeski
Sustainability In Is Projects: A Case Study, A.J. Gilbert Silvius, Snezana Nedeski
Communications of the IIMA
Sustainability is without doubt one of the most important challenges of our time. How can we develop prosperity, without compromising the life of future generations? Information systems (IS) provide organizations with the ability to change and improve business processes to better support sustainable practices. Therefore, IS can make a contribution to the sustainable development of organizations. However, the organizational change aspects of Green IS are covered only marginally in the emerging literature. This paper aims to contribute the debate on Green IS, by highlighting the role of sustainability in the projects developing or implementing IS. The paper therefore explores the …

The Relationship Between Information Systems Management And Organizational Culture, Jakobus Smit, Marielle Dellemijn
Communications of the IIMA
This paper essentially presents an exploration of the relationship between organizational culture and information systems management. Three contributions are offered namely the findings of a study of the organizational culture and information management competencies of five organizations in the Netherlands, with particular reference to the reliability of the measurements tool that was used, as well as an exploratory study of the relationship between organizational culture and the ability of an organization to manage its information systems. A brief review of the literature reveals that these two concepts in combination have been studied extensively, but that their conceptualization are somewhat fragmented …

Mitigating The Adversity Of Outsourcing: Outsourcing From The Employee’S Perspective, Sarah J. Schillen, Gerhard Steinke
Communications of the IIMA
This paper explores how outsourcing activities and decisions put the well-being of the remaining employees at risk, ultimately affecting productivity and creating further costs to the employer. It highlights four potential threats to remaining employees: trust, job satisfaction, motivation, and stress. The paper provides several suggestions for mitigating these impacts, including communication to retain trust, acting ethically to ensure satisfied employees, seeking an understanding of employee perspectives to build employee motivation, and providing good planning along with training and development to reduce employee stress.

The DIKW hierarchy has long been a standard framework with which researchers can differentiate between levels of what they see and know. However much of the research conducted explores the nuances and precise divisions between each hierarchy level and assumes that the user will know how to use them. We plan to restrict our study to textual Web documents and propose a framework extension to the DIKW hierarchy that encompasses acquisition, delivery and prediction elements. We feel that such an extension can help better define each level of the DIKW hierarchy into discrete units that can be applied to the …
Sourcing It Skills In Organizations: A Comparison Among European Countries, Ronald Batenburg
Sourcing It Skills In Organizations: A Comparison Among European Countries, Ronald Batenburg
Communications of the IIMA
Organizations deal with the matter of sourcing and governing their IT skills. This paper provides insights how this is done by firms in different European countries. It addresses the insourcing/outsourcing of IT skills trade-off, and explores the effects of country characteristics. Analyses are based on 1,464 companies extracted from the E-business W@tch dataset, covering two distinct industries in eight European Countries around the year 2003. It appears that European organizations, then, marginally recruited IT personnel on the external labour market (insourcing). Instead, outsourcing and allocating IT training were more popular as a sourcing policy. Also, it appeared that different policies …
Legacy Information Systems, Can They Be Agile? A Framework For Assessing Agility, Maik Verbaan
Legacy Information Systems, Can They Be Agile? A Framework For Assessing Agility, Maik Verbaan
Communications of the IIMA
Information systems should contribute to enterprise effectiveness, and usually do so during the operational phase of their lifecycle. From the experience of practitioners, the duration of this lifecycle is often not predetermined, therefore resulting in information systems with a relatively long lifespan and information systems with a relatively short lifespan. An important aspect of application management, is managing the application lifecycle. In the experience of practitioners, deciding the moment to end the lifecycle, refactor it, or leave it be are often not thoroughly researched. The decision to move on to a newer information system is therefore not always sufficiently justified …

Exploring The Influence Of National Cultures On Non-Compliance Behavior, Taco Dols, A.J. Gilbert Silvius
Communications of the IIMA
IT organizations and CEO’s are, and should be, worried these days about the (lack of) data confidentiality and the usage of “shadow” IT systems by employees. In addition to the company’s risk of monetary loss or public embarrassment, the senior management themselves increasingly risk personal fines or even imprisonment. Several trends reinforce the attention for these subjects, including the fact that an increasing number of employees perform parts of their work tasks from home (RSA, 2007) and the increasing bandwidth available to users which makes them rely on the Internet for satisfying their business and personal computing needs (Desisto, Plummer, …

This article aims to explain how transformational change can be achieved through service design process and methods, especially through service prototyping, and how the learning process enables change. Results are based on case study research conducted in a service prototyping laboratory, SINCO (Service Innovation Corner), during a MediPro (Practices, Processes and Products for Medicine and Healthcare) research project. This paper examines if SINCO service prototyping methods can influence transformational change in companies and organizations, what kinds of learning processes SINCO and service prototyping activate, and how the service design process is constructed when using the SINCO environment. The aim of …
Game Feedback Techniques: Eliciting Big Surprises In Business Model Design, Sune Gudiksen
Game Feedback Techniques: Eliciting Big Surprises In Business Model Design, Sune Gudiksen
DRS Biennial Conference Series
One major design debate is how design thinking can be applied in non-traditional design contexts. A particular hot new area is business model design. When entering new design grounds, codesign and the direction of design games have proven beneficial in the past, especially when it comes to engaging a cross-disciplinary circle of stakeholders and reframing and proposing new scenarios. In early business model design workshops in which I experimented with design games, observations revealed two concerns. First, to create big surprises that could lead discussions to novel directions, there was a need for techniques supporting the game purpose during play. …
Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin
Making And Perceiving - Exploring The Degrees Of Engagement With The Aesthetic Process, Priska Falin, Petra Falin
DRS Biennial Conference Series
Artistic practice and education build on a long tradition of aesthetic critique and problem solving. This tradition has later on influenced also practice-led and practice-based research approaches centering on the artistic process. Although these research approaches depend on the processes and objects that essentially have not only cognitive but aesthetic qualities, the role of the aesthetics in these research processes still lacks an analytical discussion in this context. In this article we explore the process aesthetics in the context of artistic, practice-led research. Namely, we examine the potential of the concept of aesthetic engagement as a framework for understanding and …

Several studies have demonstrated the effect of an organization’s culture and climate on the delivery of services to clients and the success of clinical outcomes. Workers’ perceptions are integral components of organizational social context, and in order to create a positive organizational culture and climate, managers and frontline staff need to have a shared understanding of the social context. The existing literature does not adequately address that discrepancies in perceptions of culture and climate between frontline staff and managers impact the implementation of policies and services. The purpose of this study is to compare the workgroup-level culture and climate of …

Perceptions, Beliefs And Practices About Technology Among Teachers In A Jamaican Infant School, Suzette Anissia Kelly
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
The purpose of this interview study was to describe and explain perceptions, beliefs, and practices about technology among four teachers at a Jamaican infant school, by answering: What are teachers' perceptions and beliefs about the role of technology in young children's learning? What are the practices regarding technology among Jamaican infant school teachers? I used criterion sampling to identify participants for my inquiry. For data collection, I used semi-structured interviews, teachers' lesson plans, and my reflective journal. I applied a socio-cultural approach (Rogoff, 1990) for the data analysis to make sense of the teachers' perceptions and articulated practices. The findings …
Change Management In Libraries: An Essential Competency For Leadership, Catherine B. Soehner
Change Management In Libraries: An Essential Competency For Leadership, Catherine B. Soehner
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
In this era of shrinking budgets and advancing technology, libraries inevitably need to change to keep up with the times. This is especially true in regards to changes in the Information Technology (IT) services provided by libraries. Some traditional services are no longer used and others must be rearranged so that the library remains a vital component of the campus. Reorganization of personnel often takes place to accommodate these changes. Organizational change may initially appear overwhelming, especially if it involves many people with strongly held opinions and beliefs about maintaining traditional library services. However, a structured process, transparency, and effective …

Problem Lah! Learning To Tell The Story Of Continuous Assessment And Improvement, Tamera Hanken
Proceedings of the IATUL Conferences
To succeed organizations rely on the purposeful application of the management functions, planning, organizing, leading and controlling, i.e., assessment. Assessment involves the collection and analysis of service and performance data to inform planning, organizing and leading-- opening the door to a culture of assessment and continuous improvement. Like other organizations responding to ever challenging economies and ever changing customer expectations, libraries are examining continuous improvement methods such as Lean, or Six Sigma, to ensure operations and services are customer focused and can be continuously assessed and improved with limited resources. Librarians though, often lack a general understanding of assessment and …

Publarians And Lubishers: Role Bending In The New Scholarly Communications Ecosystem, Nancy Maron, Sylvia Miller, Charles Watkinson, Anne Kenney
Charleston Library Conference
It has been said that the work of publishers and librarians will merge over time until we are all publarians and lublishers. Do we still envision a shared future? As new publishing programs within libraries and experimental publisher-library collaborations continue to challenge us to move outside of our comfort zones, are we learning from each other? What are some practical, down-to-earth ways that we can take advantage of each other’s expertise? How can we produce and market scholarly content in a more integrated way to meet the needs of scholars in a digital-information ecosystem, without duplicating effort on separate tracks? …

Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) vendors have emphasized a positive impact of their ERP projects in enterprise performance and in costs reduction. Recently, some researchers have started to analyze the impact on business performance of the organizational changes that complement IT investments. However, there is a lack of research studies on ERP impact in Small and Medium Enterprises (SME). Based on Cobb-Douglas production function, this paper attempts to analyze the impact of ERP implementations in SMEs’ productivity. We have collected data from 168 Spanish SMEs during the period 1997-2005, concerning the type of purchased ERP, implementation period, number of employees and …

The Impact Of National Cultures On Business & It Alignment , A.J. Gilbert Silvius
Communications of the IIMA
Aligning IT to business needs is still one of the most important concerns for senior management. The message of Business & IT Alignment (BIA) is logical and undisputed, but implementation apparently difficult. As part of a research program on the differences between the theory and practice of BIA this paper presents a conceptual exploration of the impact of national cultures on the maturity of BIA. The paper relies on Hofstede’s framework of cultural dimensions (Hofstede, 1980) to understand the concept of culture. We present a compact literature review on the influence of culture on IT that leads to the conclusion …

Testing The Relationships Among Transformational Factors In A Postsecondary Environment, Gayle B. Wooten
Testing The Relationships Among Transformational Factors In A Postsecondary Environment, Gayle B. Wooten
Human Resource Development Theses and Dissertations
The external environment is forcing many higher education institutions into transformational change. However, institutional change remains elusive and little research exists that explains how organizational change has been implemented in higher education. This study employed structural equation modeling to test the transformational factors in the Burke-Litwin Organizational Performance and Change model (1992) in a statewide technical college system. Results suggest the extraordinary influence of the external environment in the host organization permeates the culture and mission and strategy, weakening the role of leadership in the organization. The findings support the need for future research in the unique role of transformational …

Complementary Roles Of Is Leadership: Mathematical Model, Madu Baba Galadim, Renchu Gan
Communications of the IIMA
The dynamism of business environments characterized by heightened competition and rapid technological change presents great challenge to IS- leadership roles in attaining a balance between innovation and stability, effectiveness and efficiency requirements of organizations. This paper presents a mathematical model based on structural path analysis to investigate the impact of IS- leadership roles on organizational change. The model presented in this study, first hypothesizes the relationship between three constructs namely: IS-transactional role, IS-transformational role and IT-enabled change and then develops a mathematical model of the relationship to test the hypotheses. The model was tested based on assumed data and a …
