Increasing Dietary Neutral Detergent Fiber Concentration Decreases Ruminal Hydrogen Sulfide Concentrations In Steers Fed High-Sulfur Diets Based On Ethanol Coproducts, S. J. Morine, M. E. Drewnoski, S. L. Hansen Jan 2014

Increasing Dietary Neutral Detergent Fiber Concentration Decreases Ruminal Hydrogen Sulfide Concentrations In Steers Fed High-Sulfur Diets Based On Ethanol Coproducts, S. J. Morine, M. E. Drewnoski, S. L. Hansen

Department of Animal Science: Faculty Publications

Cattle feedlot diets commonly contain ethanol coproducts that are high in S. This dietary S is reduced in the rumen by sulfate reducing bacteria, resulting in an accumulation of hydrogen sulfide (H2S), increasing the risk for S toxicity. A negative correlation between H2S and ruminal pH has been observed previously. The objective of this study was to determine the effect of varying dietary NDF from chopped bromegrass hay (66% NDF) on performance, ruminal pH, and ruminal H2S gas concentration of steers fed a high-S finishing diet. One hundred fifty crossbred steers (359 ± 51 kg BW) were blocked …

A Case Study Of Regional Sport Organization Development In Triathlon, Andrew J. Martin, Andrea N. Eagleman, Petr Pancoska

Journal of Applied Sport Management

The current qualitative case study examined how a Regional Sport Organization (RSO) in New Zealand dealt with macro and micro environmental pressures in the development and evolution of increasing participation in the sport of triathlon over a 15-year period. Organizers managed a total participation increase from 300 adult participants in 1999 to close to 1,200 in 2012–13. An increase in child participants from 300 in 2004 to 3,400 in 2012–13 also took place. Archives of the results of the respective adult and children’s series of triathlon events from 1998–2013 were analyzed along with the environmental pressures. The findings indicated that …

Investigating The Photosynthesis Of Symbiodinium In Caribbean Gorgonian Corals, Blake Ramsby Jan 2014

Investigating The Photosynthesis Of Symbiodinium In Caribbean Gorgonian Corals, Blake Ramsby

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Symbiodinium photosynthesis fuels the growth of an array of marine invertebrates, including scleractinian corals and octocorals. Studies examining the symbiosis between Caribbean octocorals and Symbiodinium are sparse, even though octocorals blanket the landscape of Caribbean coral reefs. Here, I compared the photosynthetic characteristics of Symbiodinium in four comCaribbean octocoral species (Pseudoplexaura porosa, Pseudoplexaura wagenaari, Eunicea tourneforti, and Pterogorgia anceps) in outdoor aquaria at ambient temperature. The four octocoral species exhibited similar photochemical efficiencies despite significant differences in Symbiodinium density, chlorophyll a per cell, light absorption by chlorophyll a, and rates of photosynthetic oxygen evolution. Differences in photosynthetic performance between octocoral …

Browse All Undergraduate research

The views of health professionals are an important and often overlooked aspect of changes in health policy. This paper examines the impact of healthcare reform on the medical professionals of Nicaragua over the last 40 years. First, the historical context of Nicaraguan healthcare is discussed. This history is presented as both an outgrowth of and a reaction to Nicaragua’s changing political environment. The changes in health policy over this time period are then examined through the lens of medical professionals. Several sub-topics are investigated including the relationship between perceptions of health professionals and political ideology, the inability of the younger …

Retention Of Adolescents Living With Hiv In Care, Treatment, And Support Programs In Uganda, Livingstone Ssali, Sam Kalibala, Josephine Birungi, Aggrey Egessa, Jonathan Wangisi, Joanne Lyavala Okullu, Celestin Bakanda, Stephen Okoboi, Francis Obare

HIV and AIDS

Understanding the extent to which adolescents aged 10–19 years who are living with HIV are retained in HIV care, treatment, and support is important for informing the design of effective services for this population to better meet their needs across three main areas of HIV and AIDS programming: treatment; care and support; and prevention. Retention in HIV programs is, in turn, important for positive clinical outcomes including viral suppression and survival. In 2013–2014, The AIDS Support Organization and the Population Council undertook a study to generate evidence on factors associated with retention of adolescents in HIV and AIDS programs in …

"Wood For The Coffins Ran Out": Modernism And The Shadowed Afterlife Of The Influenza Pandemic, Elizabeth Outka Jan 2014

"Wood For The Coffins Ran Out": Modernism And The Shadowed Afterlife Of The Influenza Pandemic, Elizabeth Outka

English Faculty Publications

Here’s what we already know—during the First World War, soldiers and civilians often had remarkably different experiences of the war corpse. Dead bodies were omnipresent on the front line and in the trenches, an inescapable constant for the living soldier. As critic Allyson Booth notes, “Trench soldiers . . . inhabited worlds constructed, literally, of corpses.”1 In Britain and America, however, such corpses were strangely absent; unlike in previous conflicts, bodies were not returned. This dichotomy underscores some of our central assumptions about the differences between the front line and the home front: in the trenches, dead bodies and …

Cigarettes Vs. Soda: The Argument For Similar Public Health Regulation Of Smoking And Obesity Response, Laura Hoffman Jan 2014

Cigarettes Vs. Soda: The Argument For Similar Public Health Regulation Of Smoking And Obesity Response, Laura Hoffman

Connecticut Law Review

While smoking and obesity may have nuanced differences as public health problems, this Article briefly argues that those differences should not pose an obstacle to certain paternalistic attempts to regulate them similarly. Specifically, observed successes in reducing smoking through taxation, labeling requirements, and advertising bans could likewise prove successful in reducing obesity.

Cigarettes Vs. Soda: The Argument For Similar Public Health Regulation Of Smoking And Obesity Response, Katherine Pratt Jan 2014

Cigarettes Vs. Soda: The Argument For Similar Public Health Regulation Of Smoking And Obesity Response, Katherine Pratt

Connecticut Law Review

This Article critiques Professor David Friedman’s article, Public Health Regulation and the Limits of Paternalism, and sets forth an alternative view of the limits of anti-obesity public health paternalism. Specifically, it critiques Friedman’s classification of public health interventions based on how coercive the intervention is, and offers an alternative construct to analyze paternalistic public health interventions. The alternative approach, developed by Mark Hall, distinguishes between (1) “old” public health interventions that target specific pathogens or toxins, and (2) “new” public health interventions that target upstream behavioral risk factors and ecological factors. This Article then elaborates on the main example that …

Sugary Drinks, Happy Meals, Social Norms, And The Law: The Normative Impact Of Product Configuration Bans Response, Lindsay F. Wiley Jan 2014

Sugary Drinks, Happy Meals, Social Norms, And The Law: The Normative Impact Of Product Configuration Bans Response, Lindsay F. Wiley

Connecticut Law Review

What role should government play in discouraging harmful overconsumption? What modes of government intervention best strike the balance between effectiveness and political acceptability? It is well established that government has a legitimate interest in protecting the health and safety of the people, even from their own choices and actions. Furthermore, there is no fundamental right to sell or purchase particular services or products in particular configurations. The appropriate question, then, is not what government may do to prevent noncommunicable diseases that are associated with individual behavior choices, but rather what government should do. This comment on David Friedman’s Public Health …

Public Health Regulation And The Limits Of Paternalism Lead Article, David Adam Friedman Jan 2014

Public Health Regulation And The Limits Of Paternalism Lead Article, David Adam Friedman

Connecticut Law Review

This Article explores the role of paternalism in regulatory efforts to improve public health, focusing mostly on obesity, but also accounting for recent developments in other public health arenas. First, the Article describes a spectrum of interventions that regulators can implement in the public health zone, ranging from soft paternalism to hard paternalism. Second, the Article discusses the limits of these paternalistic interventions in addressing the problem of high obesity rates in America. The analysis shows that the underlying scientific and socioeconomic factors driving obesity prove difficult to confront—a difficulty further complicated by the lower tolerance that the public has …

Limiting Liberty To Prevent Obesity: Justifiability Of Strong Hard Paternalism In Public Health Regulation Response, Thaddeus Mason Pope Jan 2014

Limiting Liberty To Prevent Obesity: Justifiability Of Strong Hard Paternalism In Public Health Regulation Response, Thaddeus Mason Pope

Connecticut Law Review

Because of the largely self-regarding nature of obesity, many current and proposed public health regulatory measures are paternalistic. That is, these measures interfere with a person’s liberty with the primary goal of improving that person’s own welfare. Paternalistic public health measures may be effective in reducing obesity. They may even be the only sufficiently effective type of regulation. But many commentators argue that paternalistic public health measures are not politically viable enough to get enacted. After all, paternalism is repugnant in our individualistic culture. It is “wrong” for the government to limit our liberty for our own good. In this …
