The Children Of Spring Street: Rickets In An Early Nineteenth-Century Congregation, Meredith A. B. Ellis
The Children Of Spring Street: Rickets In An Early Nineteenth-Century Congregation, Meredith A. B. Ellis
Northeast Historical Archaeology
This paper examines the prevalence of rickets, or vitamin D deficiency, in the subadult skeletal remains from the burial vaults of the Spring Street Presbyterian Church of New York City. The burial vaults of the church were active from approximately 1820–1846 and contain the remains of at least 86 subadults (minimum number of individuals count [MNI] of left tibiae). Over 34% of the subadult tibiae in this collection display pathology consistent with vitamin D deficiency. Since vitamin D is acquired through access to sunlight and specific foods, a high rate of rickets can give clues about living conditions, parenting strategies, …

Archaeologies Of Disease And Public Order In Nineteenth-Century New York: The View From Spring And Varick, William Werner, Shannon A. Novak
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The authors situate evidence of disease among the burial population of the Spring Street Presbyterian Church within evolving attitudes towards public health and civic order in 19th-century Manhattan. Two personal vignettes illustrate how individuals interacted with the physical space of the church’s vicinity at different moments in the history of municipal reform. The first, a 16-year-old girl named Louisa, was virtually absent from the historical record until the recovery and analysis of her skeletal remains from the church burial vaults. Her skeletal biography conveys the cosmopolitan nature of Manhattan social relations in the early 19th century and the complex ways …

"That Class Of Person Who Cannot Afford A Pew": Analysis Of The Human Remains From The Spring Street Presbyterian Church Burial Vaults, Thomas A. Crist
Northeast Historical Archaeology
The analysis of the skeletal remains of 85 people interred between ca. 1820 and 1846 in the vaults of the abolitionist Spring Street Presbyterian Church provides unique insights regarding the biological history of antebellum New York City unavailable from other sources. Even though the sample size is small, the remains reflect the prevalence of infectious diseases, metabolic disorders, nutritional deficiencies, premature deaths, and high infant mortality that characterized the rapidly industrializing city. Among the most remarkable discoveries were a rare case of abdominal cancer; a mother and her full-term fetus in utero buried together; two autopsied children; and a dental …

The ionome, or elemental profile, of a maize kernel can be viewed in at least two distinct ways. First, the collection of elements within the kernel are food and feed for people and animals. Second, the ionome of the kernel represents a developmental end point that can summarize the life history of a plant, combining genetic programs and environmental interactions. We assert that single-kernel-based phenotyping of the ionome is an effective method of analysis, as it represents a reasonable compromise between precision, efficiency, and power. Here, we evaluate potential pitfalls of this sampling strategy using several field-grown maize sample sets. …

United States Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services: Staff Publications
Background: Striped skunks (Mephitis mephitis) are susceptible to infection with some influenza A viruses. However, the viral shedding capability of this peri-domestic mammal and its potential role in influenza A virus ecology are largely undetermined.
Methodology/Principal Findings: Striped skunks were experimentally infected with a low pathogenic (LP) H4N6 avian influenza virus (AIV) and monitored for 20 days post infection (DPI). All of the skunks exposed to H4N6 AIV shed large quantities of viral RNA, as detected by real-time RT-PCR and confirmed for live virus with virus isolation, from nasal washes and oral swabs (maximum #106.02 PCR EID50 equivalent/mL and #105.19 …

The Potential For Grape Seed Extract As An Antioxidant In Human Cells, Mark J. Eliason, Dr. Kim O'Neill
The Potential For Grape Seed Extract As An Antioxidant In Human Cells, Mark J. Eliason, Dr. Kim O'Neill
Journal of Undergraduate Research
The single-cell gel electrophoresis assay or “Comet Assay” is a novel test which can be used to empirically ascertain the degree of damage sustained by the DNA of individual cells when exposed to cytotoxic chemicals. In this experiment a known cell line was grown in varying concentrations of grape seed extract (GSE), a reputed antioxidant, and then exposed to hydrogen peroxide, an oxidant, known to cause breaks in the DNA. When the comet assay was subsequently run the effect that the varying concentrations of grape seed extract had in protecting the cells from damage could be quantified.

© 2014 by John Wiley & Sons, Inc. Genome sequences and RNA-seq data provide unparalleled views into the genetic basis that underlies plant phenotypes. This chapter outlines a paradigm shift in plant biology originating from the relative ease of generating sequences, and points to tools that have enabled global transcript analyses (RNA-seq), replacing arduous microarray hybridization experiments and laborious quantitative RT-PCR platform designs. Soon, it can be envisioned that one may replace individual transcript assays by measuring how the entire transcriptome responds globally to a manipulation or mutation. The chapter advances a position that the knowledge of genome content and …
Producing A Transgenic Mouse, Michael Hatch, Dr. David Kooyman
Producing A Transgenic Mouse, Michael Hatch, Dr. David Kooyman
Journal of Undergraduate Research
One of the greatest challenges in the world today is providing adequate nutrition for all, particularly in third world nations. One potential way to improve worldwide nutrition is to use transgenic animals to create a better livestock base. Transgenic animals can potentially be bigger, stronger, and better producers of meat and milk than their non-transgenic counterparts. The purpose of this research project was to produce transgenic mice, serving as a model for what could potentially occur with larger mammals with more agricultural value, such as cows or pigs.

Self-Determined Engagement In Physical Activity And Sedentary Behaviors Of Us College Students, Ale Quartiroli, Hotaka Maeda
Self-Determined Engagement In Physical Activity And Sedentary Behaviors Of Us College Students, Ale Quartiroli, Hotaka Maeda
International Journal of Exercise Science
International Journal of Exercise Science 7(1) : 87-97, 2014. Although the importance of promoting physical activity is well established, researchers have recently considered “sedentary behaviors” as another key risk factor for chronic disease. However, little is known about the motivational processes regulating sedentary behavior on a daily basis. A substantial amount of research has been based on the self-determination theory to examine the motivational processes regulating physical activity behaviors. However, only limited attention has been paid to sedentary behaviors from this theoretical perspective. This study aims to identify and understand motivational aspects related to sedentary behavior from a self-determination perspective. A …

Assessment Of Glomerular Filtration Rates By Cockcroft-Gault And Modification Of Diet In Renal Disease Equations In A Cohort Of Omani Patients, Magdi E. Al-Osali, Salim S. Al-Qassabi, Saud M.
Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal
Objectives: Glomerular filtration rate (GFR) is the best index of renal function and is frequently assessed by corrected creatinine clearance (CCLcr). The limitations of CCLcr have inspired researchers to derive easy formulas to estimate GFR, with Cockcroft-Gault (C-G) and the modification of diet in renal disease (MDRD) being the most widely used. This study aimed to evaluate the validity of these equations by finding the relation between CCLcr and estimated GFR (eGFR) by C-G, modified C-G and MDRD equations. Methods: From 2007 to 2011, 158 subjects were analysed for serum creatinine and CCLcr at Bowsher Polyclinic, Muscat, Oman. The C-G …
